It's sooooooooooooooooooo TALL! What a fun stop on the way to Vegas! It doesn't take long to see it. You can see if from the freeway, if you don't want to exit and pull over. Getting right up next to it though, was really awesome. You see how big it is and it's so high up! I thought about trying to take a selfie with the thermometer, but it's just so big that you can't get the whole thing in the photo with you lol Love that this is a fun and free, quick stop in Baker. Damn that's tall Halfway between LA and LV is this spot. It is literally in the middle of nowhere. It's tucked between an abandoned Hawaiian theme motel and the alien abduction jerky place. Plus there's a gas station with restrooms down the road. I guess it's accurate. I compared the reading to the car thermometer and they were only off by one degree. Overall four stars. You can spot this bad boy coming down I-15 -- no way you can miss it! I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to add this stop to your itinerary, but if it's in route -- MAKE THE STOP. Snap a photo. Visit the gift shop. Then keep on truckin' to your next stop. The temp seemed slight off and didn't look super cool since there was minimal red on the thermometer as it was only in the 60s, but I can tell you I do NOT want to be here to see it hit triple digits lol The gift shop is underwhelming and will take you a few mins to look through. Lots of branded clothing, outdated ornaments, a souvenir penny machine, postcards, cold drinks and a few snack options. They have fairly clean bathrooms so you can always use it as your bathroom stop. Nothing to write home about. Should only take about 5 mins. While traveling from Las Vegas we stopped at the Worlds Talles Thermometer. Why, you may ask, and I have to say, why not. Its something differnt to see and take your souviner photos for your social media, lol Looked at the thermometr and it was tall. Lucky for us the temperature was not in the hundreds. Temp was in the 90's so it was bearable for a bit, because it felt hotter. At the bottom of the the worlds tallest thermometer there is a seating area for guest to enjoy the desert scenery, have a light snack or share a meal with family and friends. We had no meal to enjoy so we continued on our journey through the desert. There is also a small shop that has lots of information on display about the founders and owners of the worlds largest thermometer. Come in and learn the history of this quirky road site attraction. There a veriety of souviners to shooce from like t-shirts, magnets, cups, and cool childrens books. They have a penny smacher matchine for those who like collecting smashed pennies from their travels. yes, I had to gey one, lol. Remember to sing in their guest book before you leave. Visiters from all over the world have visited here and left their mark in one of their many guest books. I live in Las Vegas and my mom has never been to California before, so I decided to drive them to the first town with food and that's when I found myself both in Baker, and staring at this weird roadside attraction that was a solid 4 minutes of fun. The thermometer itself wasn't working but luckily the little gift shop was open and the women inside was very kind. The store itself has t-shorts, keychains, and my item of choice, the magnet. Once I found my magnet and took a single photo of the thermometer, I had no other reason to stay so I hit the road and will probably not think about this place until I drove to Los Angelas in a few months. Overall, it's just another one of those weird west coast road attractions that you see once and move on. It's always been there and I appreciate seeing that tall The thermometer is just that. A huge 134 foot thermometer that shows the super high temperatures of the town of Baker that is the self-proclaimed Gateway to Death Valley. The brainchild of someone names Herron who dreamed it up. It was built 134 feet as a tribute to the 134 degree Celsius highest temperature in Death Valley in 1913. In 2012, the Baker thermometer stopped working and was sold. Its owner blamed its shutdown on a bad economy and a thermometer-topping monthly electric bill. I leaned it costs about $40 grand per year to operate! The builder's daughter purchased the thermometer in 2014 and the builder's widow paid to repair the thermometer. Stopping by the World's Largest Thermometer is an interesting stop and fun for kids. Okay...so this is a total tourist spot. Notice I didn't say trap. It isn't a trap. It is a welcome respite from the hot mojave desert and a must visit if you haven't been through before. South of Death Valley, North of Los Angeles, and West of Las Vegas, lies the little town of Baker, California. This thermometer has an interesting history, and I'm thankful people have stepped in to keep it going. If you have to deal with heat over 100 degrees on a regular basis, you might as well embrace it. They embrace it big time. The thermometer is visible from quite a distance away, and grows as you approach. There is a gift shop adjacent to the towering attraction that has all sorts of trinkets and treasures to entice you to spend your money. I was quite impressed with the children's section, and especially so with the desert-themed book collection. Clothing, hats, desert wear, mini thermometers, and a good assortment of snacks and beverages--this is also a one stop shop if you need a quick refreshment before heading on your way. Oh, and even though we visited right before they closed, the bathrooms were clean, and nobody made us feel rushed. We're glad we stopped! Mood - road side attractions Upon driving up to this mammoth of a thermometer that sits in Baker, you can visibly see the temps as your driving the 15 freeway either north or south. The thermometer was originally created by a company in Salt Lake City Utah for the owner of Bun Boy at the time, in 1991. The thermometer stands 134 ft after the record temps in Death Valley, July of 1913. The property was sold, new owners occupied the site, but the power bill was over 8k a month, due to the poor economy they could not afford to have the thermometer remain on. In September 2012 it had to be shut down. The property was sold again and there was a re- lighting ceremony that occurred July 10, 2014. Fun fact- when the original thermometer was built, due to the 70mph winds it snapped in half and needed to be rebuilt- 2 years later the light bulbs popped out due to more tempestuous weather. Well I guess this is a must see. Past here many many times through the years. It was sad to see it not operational during one period of time. But it's now up and running well. It's a desert staple which you will pass on the way to or back from Vegas. Many stop and take pics but you can take great pics from the freeway. They market is as the worlds tallest thermometer. So seeing this, will knock going to see the worlds tallest thermometer off your bucket list. It's lights up the temp throughout the day and can be seen for miles at night marking the Baker exit.
