If you special order a cake, just make sure to check it before you leave. I requested a simple birthday message on the cake - not only did it look sloppy, they spelled the person's name wrong (the name was Chris). The person at the register did show it to me before I paid, and he did offer to "get someone" when I pointed out the error. Unfortunately I was on the way to my event, so I didn't have time to talk to someone else. I emailed management to advise of the problem and request that they implement some sort of checks and balances with the cake personalization. To date, no one has responded. All in all, not the hugest deal...but the lack of customer service is what's really sticking with me. The cakes are definitely delicious, but at prices higher than Publix I would expect proper order fulfillment and some customer service. read more

I was visiting Sumter for my Mom's 68th birthday. I ordered two cakes from Baker's Sweets and was extremely disappointed! The lemon cake was lacking in lemon flavor. The only real lemon flavor was in the curd between the layers. I also ordered the Strawberry Shortcake. It had an ok flavor but where were the fresh strawberries? We stopped here on the way back from vacation, and what a find!! You walk in, and there is a display case full of amazing looking cakes, cookies, muffins,brownies, cannolis, etc . You can go right to the counter to order or sit at a table and order. They have soup, sandwiches, burgers, and salads to pick from. On top of all this, they have a full coffee bar! Our waitress was fantastic and helped me choose since everything sounded so good. I had the turkey avocado sandwich with sweet potato fries, and he had the club sandwich with fries. Good portion sizes and sandwiches are loaded.We naturally had dessert as well because it was impossible to look and not pick anything, and the prices were all reasonable! Will definitely revisit! Adequate size bistro with 3 high top tables and 10 low tops inside. There are two entrances to assist those who call in their order. You can pick-up called in orders at the side entrance. Very convenient design. The inside has a huge dessert window and coffee station which greets you upon entering from the front. The menu is filled with flavorful items and my customized choice of a veggie sub with chicken added reached me with color and warm perfection. It will make me ask other restaurants to duplicate their version, it was so good. The 6 bite cup of broccoli salad was also a hit. It was served with golden raisins to make for a sweet treat. I was not a fan of the Oreo brownie as the cake (or brownie) was hard. It were as if it was 3 days old at first bite. However, my friend's huge slice of coconut cake was a hit so much that it was a fight with the devil from getting a second slice. I went into Baker's Sweets on 27 Dec 2025 to order a dozen peanut butter cupcakes for my wife's birthday on 31 Dec 2025. I go to pick them up on Dec 31st to discover the employee got the order wrong; they were trying to give me a dozen butter cupcakes. They told me to come back in an hour because they would have to make some, but they called me back in about 5 minutes saying my order was ready. I picked up the cupcakes for a get together later that evening. My wife, son, and I went to eat them only to find out they tasted stale; my wife tapped the side of the cupcake and you could hear how hard it was. They should have been fresh and soft. We told our guests not to eat them and instead ate a cake someone bought at Walmart that was much better than the cupcakes. It used to be a good restaurant. But this week I tried it after a gap for lunch. For $13 they gave me a salad that was less than half of the size of salad I used to get there. It barely had two large curly leaf lettuces, a few strawberries and tiny amount of other sundries. For $13 I also got shrimp bruschetta toast. They barely gave me four tiny slices of bread with shrimp on them. Their food amount and quality have both gone down. read more

This place has gone downhill. Went to Eggs Up Grill for Valentines breakfast. It was packed because the food is always good, order is accurate and service is excellent. Crossed the street and went to Baker's Sweets instead. Had to wait to be seated even though there were many empty tables. Didn't have enough staff for Valentines breakfast. They asked us to be patient. We had an appointment we needed to be at so we only had so much patience. Got order wrong. Told server we were in a hurry. Requested check with food. Received it but had to chase her down to give her payment. Now I know why their parking lot is mostly empty and Eggs Up Grill's always has cars in it. read more

However the service was slow, it took 20 mins to be seated, and we came after the lunch rush. Our server would randomly wander off, and it took about 15 mins to place our order and another 30 to get our food. By the time we received our food, there were only two other patrons. We asked for our check and a to go box, because now we were late for a meeting, and it took 20 mins before we saw a busser to prompt our waitress to bring the check. We never received a to go box. The ambiance was ok, if not quaint and slightly dated. Not all the dishes were cleaned as my friend had to ask for a new drink since there was food on the inside at the bottom of her drink (she had a coke). Every time I'm in town I must get at least one slice of cake (my favorite are strawberry and the peanut butter). The slices are always moist and delicious. For breakfast, the shrimp and grits are must haves! The best in town! So creamy, smooth, buttery and delicious. The Place: Cute, clean and very very busy usually. The Staff: Friendly albeit many times they seem a little lost. Who know, maybe some are new. The Food: Cafe sandwiches, waaay overpriced, Hard NO. Ive been there when the 'barista' gave me iced instead of hot coffe, then once the complete wrong flavor and insisted I ordered it, and last time they didn't have any whole milk...it was like 10a on a weekday, send someone to the IGA/FoodLion/Aldi, but get milk, not a difficult task. As for the service I can see why other people have posted what they posted. I'm a very overly friendly person. I am not from Sumter, but am here 1-2 times a week for business. There is a "locals" or frequent guest preference amongst the waitresses and waiters. There isn't an much excitement to welcome you, or educate you as a first time guest on their menu or what they have to offer. It does appear they cater to a common frequent-flier crowd. Maybe just focusing a little bit to the new business and new visitors will warm up the environment and opinions of the wait staff. Usually I'm very pleased with the items I order from Bakers Sweets. This time they let me down. I ordered a strawberry shortcake for my grandaughter's 11th bday. I asked for happy birthday to be written in blue on top. When we opened the box at home the cake had a ragged side, the cake on the card board was crooked and there was NO bday greeting written on the top. I know you can do better than this. This portion of cake should have been cut up and sold as pieces since it's presentation was not up to par. Birthdays are special and I wanted the cake to reflect this with beautiful presentation. A fantastic little gem in Sumter. From the soups and sandwiches to the homemade pastries and desserts, this place has it all. They have a solid kids menu, and lots of variety. One of my kids got the Mac and cheese and we all loved it. Homemade and very cheesy. The other got the pancakes and eggs. He was happy too. All of us adults had salads and sandwiches and a soup. We were all VERY happy. We got an iced brownie and a snicker's cheesecake to go, and those were great too. I look forward to going back to Sumter so I can eat here again! (Our waitress was great too. Every-time I order from here I order the same meal, in case you wanna know, it's a chicken salad sandwich. Every-time I order from here it's completely different than what the last one was, & the one before that & before that. I just don't understand. Sometimes the fries have zero seasoning & next time they have way too much. No matter what bread I ask for it's different each time; it's a guessing game at this point.
