1 star is for customer service/delivery/competence/reliability or lack there of. They got us near the entrance to the home show where the fellow at a table did a song and dance about us subscribing to the newspaper for Thurs-Sun home delivery. $60 with the option to cancel after 2 months. Here is a little Vons gift card for joining! Here is a free ball cap! I kind of shook my head and told hubs it may not be such a good idea, we did not need it, we can see it on line, etc. With a mind of his own though, he signed up for it! The shady sales guy's demeanor sure changed once he had our credit card info - for the worse I may add. I certainly did not gave a good overall feeling. Does he even work for the paper? Even by contract? Come to see after 2 weeks where we should have had 8 papers, we had received 2. They just were not showing up. Customer service after a few calls - not great. They had our address correct one week, another address the next. Are we sharing our papers with strangers? That shady character that signed us up gets credit perhaps on sheer numbers? Weird. We ultimately cancelled. Not worth the hassle. Sidenote: Please keep in mind if you do get the paper and are done with them, the county animal shelter on Fruitvale really needs them for the pets' care/housing. read more

Though obviously not the most highly rated newspaper in the nation, the Bakersfield Californian has a LOT to offer this community. They have confronted a lot of major local issues head-on, and have been spotlighted in different television programmes. I remember even seeing Herb Benham interviewed on an Investigation Discovery criminal justice show once! (He's definitely one of my favourite writers on the newspaper's staff, as he once visited and answered questions for my high school journalism class.) This newspaper publication has truly grown with the times, adding sub-publications such as Mas, Bakersfield Life, Northwest Voice, and Southwest Voice (accompanied by websites for the tech-savvy, as Stevey P mentioned). The layout is simple and effective, making it easy to navigate, unlike other bulkier national newspapers. They deliver the paper in a timely manner in the mornings, and continue to find interesting, though admittedly local, topics to address. (Has anyone noticed the growing number of Bakersfield Californian newspaper "stands" in the community, as well?) Also, the BC has helped to cultivate and encourage young journalists in our area with events hosted at Bakersfield College and visiting local high school journalism classes. While I do agree with Erica T that the Californian is pretty biased (leaning heavily on the conservative side in some of their articles), a lot of this is due to giving the consumer what it wants- the supplier meets demand! Over the years, however, the BC has become more and more liberal, so let's at least give this publication the credit its due. And of course, I also enjoy leisurely flipping through the Eye Street entertainment section and shaking my head over the Letters to the Editor. I've always liked their annual "vote for which comics stay" ploy, as well. The Bakersfield Californian keeps things local, that's for sure, and that's the way it seems Kern County folks like it. The Californian does a great job of reporting and covering Kern County. Although criticized for not being this poltical way or that political way, they do their best to remain non-partisan in a very conservative city. They have taken courageous stands in investigating local institutions such as law enforcement or local conspiracies like "Lords of Bakersfield". They've even won state/national awards for reporting on those series and another recently on pollution and traffic issues. The Californian is looked at as a national leader in local reporting through their neighborhood pubs like Southwest Voice and Northwest Voice. And given the demise of traditional newspapers they have stayed relevant through their website bakersfield.com as it's become popular locally over the past decade. read more

Customer Service is always very rude and they never say thank you, they don't even say goodbye when they hang up. Unbelievable. You'd think an establishment with that much history would have better manners. So rude! I'm a very nice and friendly person but it's happened so many times that I finally had to write a review. The Bakersfield Californian is a very poor example of a news paper. Their content is now made mostly of paid advertising and reporting on the largest cabbage at the fair. The overriding bulk of the message is purchased through other news distributorships such as the API. Local readers find themselves with the realization the articles are filtered through the Californians liberal wonky press staff. On the bright spot for the Californian: if you happen to feel yourself disappointed due to their elemental writing style. Do not fret, often the Californians reporters are of such poor quality they are soon fired or move on to a more meaningful position. Often wearing a paper hat. read more

I have always enjoyed the Californian's content... For that I would be happy to give four stars... ... However the customer service leaves something to be desired... I requested by email for them to turn off my E-Edition subscription's "auto-renewal" feature (since I need to cut some of my monthly expenses)... However instead, without any follow-up whatsoever, my access to the paper was removed (despite having more time as a result of my last payment)... Several days have passed and I have still not received any follow-up regarding these actions (a given in any customer service matter... ZERO stars. Moved in November. Not 1 week has gone by where I am not having to call in 2-3 days to inquire as to where our paper is. Nobody who answers knows their right hand from their left. Always told "we will send a paper to you". Yet, it NEVER arrives. Today, "Monique" spoke with complete and utter unprofessionalism and sarcasm during our 3rd call there today! Ahhhhh, good old customer appreciation!!! So nice. Absolutely ridiculous. I have gotten the daily delivery since I was 18 years old. In Columbus, Ohio; Sacramento, Ca and this place. Never been treated with this much contempt and unprofessionalism. Ever. And both the Columbus Dispatch AND the Sacramento Bee got the delivery correct. They weren't incompetent like this place. Complete incompetent-rude morons. It's absurd that the "customer service" reps don't have enough sense to recognize where their paychecks get funded!!!! ZERO STARS I give TBC above average marks for content. Minus 10 for customer service. I've been a home delivery subscriber for over 40 years. In all that time I have NEVER had such horrible service. As I write this, I am sitting at home at 9:00 a.m. STILL waiting for my *morning* paper to be delivered. This is at least the third time this month. How incompetent can the carrier be? Deliver for a couple of days and then forget the next? Come on. I did this kind of work as a teen, getting up very early and delivering on a bicycle. Going to school afterwards. It ain't that hard. Its too bad TBC can't leave well enough alone. Two years ago, our carrier was the best ever. Then the genius management decided her route was too big. Too bad for me. I have a new carrier that can't find his behind with both hands. I've called too many times to plead for a better solution. Instead, it gets worse. I've come to the office and talked to the person in charge of circulation. Still getting worse. I'm hoping to talk with my carrier's route manager. MAYBE he can get the carrier to do his job. Beyond that, I have no other choice but to cancel my long term association with TBC. It is my understanding that TBC contracts with a delivery service. This service sets up a management structure and a cadre of carriers. When the carrier misses a home delivery, I'm told he is fined. TBC needs to take a hard look at the contractor doing the delivery service for them. I think they need to be replaced. However, TBC seems content to find new ways to "easy pay" for the services they fail miserably to provide. My advice to you, reader, is this....If you don't mind reading your morning paper in the afternoon or the next day, subscribe to the TBC. It isn't a bad paper. I like getting the paper WHEN we get it. I'm a subscriber for thurs-sybdsy and so far I have to call all the time because the paper never gets delivered. I've had the subscription for 2 weeks and have had the paper actually show up 2 times. That's 2 days (without me having to call and tell them it didn't show up) out of 8 days, the rest of the time I have to call them. It's a waste of my time to have to call before 930 to get my paper, so much for sleeping in...at least the bring the paper if u call before 930 and they credit your account. However, if you really want the paper I suggest trying it but don't keep it if u have to call them more than 2 times in a week or so. I'm giving then this last chance to do it right, if I have to call one more time I'm canceling, it's not worth the hassel. read more

did you know that there is no help for the disabled or elderly here in bakersfield, we are forced to live in homes that are un safe, the home that i live in now has electrical problems the electricity is not grounded which could start a fire inside the walls, did you also know that there is a regulation that states that all rental management companies require that you make three times the amount of rent since the state does not give us that much to rent anywhere else we are subject to live in places where the slum lords are taking advantage of us. i am disabled my mom is 86 years old and all we are trying to do is live in a safe neighborhood , not even the police dept. comes down to the east side i have called them several times and not once have they shown of course the sheriff's dept says i can beat a person drag him into my house and then call 911 for help. why should i do the p.d. 's job isnt' that what the city pay's them for or has everyone just turned into a bully and just does not care about anyone any more. that is why i am writing letters to the state of california to stop them from giving any funds to any law enforcement, house authority's since no one really needs it. hopefully bakersfield will not get any. read more

For a News Paper the Bakersfield Californian is by far the worst communicator it has been my misfortune to deal with...on June 28th of 2018 I cancelled subscription and the daily delivery continues to this date, I have called the Customer Service Line 11 times and have been assured that there "is a cancellation notice in our files", same stock response each time....meanwhile delivery continues, during this time frame I've gone out of town twice for several days and the news paper pile up on my driveway, and open invitation for a home break-in. The Bakersfield Californian outsources paper delivery and I even called this independent operator direct with the same stock response and non-action. I've suggested to the "Customer Service" group that they do something really radical like pick up the phone and talking to someone instead of sending more emails, which by my count has been 11 times. The News Paper business must be really good to feel you can deliver papers at no cost and at the same time alienate customers. I guess to get someone's attention I will need to take an Ad out?????? Note to the head Distribution "walk down the hall and Tell the responsible person to stop delivery" it is obvious that no one is reading the emails and your Out Source Group has no incentive to stop...they get paid even if the Bakersfield Californian dose not.
