Hubby and I stopped by this ethnic grocery store earlier today. We love visiting ethnic grocery stores because you get to discover a whole new world of foods you've never tried before. We saw shelves with various dates, date treats, cookies, peanut brittle, teas, coffees, breads, and more. I really enjoyed walking through this store. We ended up buying a box of Medjool days that costed $13.99 and some fresh dates that were $5.99/lb. I noticed some of the shelves didn't have pricing information. I think all of their items should be priced so it's easier for customers to shop. The service was good. The staff were friendly and nice. I wouldn't mind shopping here again for my needs. read more

Amazing Middle Eastern Supermarket. They have many authentic items imported directly from different countries in the Middle East and Northern Africa. If you want/need anything from the Mid East, I recommend you go to Balady. Everything you need from olive oil, nuts, fresh fruits/vegetables, different types of pita, Middle Eastern spices, desserts, dates, olives, lentils, cheeses, meats, or even juices from abroad, you will find it all here. They have reasonable prices and their staff is very friendly and helpful. I'm not Middle Eastern and their staff is always very helpful when anyone has questions regarding their products. Since most products are from abroad, everything is in Arabic, but all you have to do is ask an employee, and they will gladly help you and explain things to you. Balady is definitely a gem in Bay Ridge which I highly recommend. read more

What a supermarket! Walk into Balady Fine foods and you'll think you stepped into Little Beirut or Tehran. This is predominantly a Middle Eastern gourmet market with a massive variety of everything. When I entered, the beautiful fresh produce on display offered a nice welcome but as I explored farther into the store, there was so much more. And talk about dates (which I love), there were so many varieties!! Here are some of the finds: spices, meat, coffee/tea, candy/cookies/crackers/chocolate from the Middle East/international, unique beverages, frozen items, olive bar, food with the Balady brand, international items including products packaged in another language (which I find charming). I felt like a kid in a candy store as explored the aisles. I hope my pictures captured some of the essence of this store. As for the butcher section---the meat counter had additional animal parts on display in addition to fresh whole chickens with head still attached. As a lukewarm carnivore, I was taken aback by this and spared Yelp any such pictures. Also keep in mind, you will not find any alcohol for purchase at this store. Nor will you find pork products in the butcher dept. This for obvious reasons according to Islamic restrictions. Since I just bought a few items such as Medjool dates ($6.99 a pound), sesame coated bread (2 large rings for $2.25), a 2 pound bag of lentils ($2.00) and a unique pineapple malt beverage (translation--sweetened sparkling water of which I had to ask someone for more information since the details on the can was not written in English), I can't identify if their prices are considered reasonable or expensive. I don't live in the area and never shopped here. But I liked what I saw. A few things to keep in mind: they have a shopper's club plan, the staff are friendly and helpful, the space is immaculate, they accept credit cards and it's just a delight to even browse. Love this supermarket! Balady sells an abundant variety of middle eastern items. And not to mention, they also have a section that sells all the different spices, sweets, dried fruit & nuts. I even found some items I saw from Dubai (chocolate prune almond candies). And not to mention, I have been searching for this special type of cream cheese that I ate in Dubai recently, but couldn't find in any supermarket in New York. If you are looking for the "kiri" cheese, this is the shop to get it. They sold the kiri cheese at a very reasonable price, comparing it to online. I went a bit crazy and bought 12 packs. This place is actually pretty good but just be careful of their package chicken and meat section. That's basically stuff that's about to go off in a day or two. I bought some chicken there and two days later it stunk like a dead body in my refrigerator. I should've got a refund for it but I ended up throwing about $30 worth of chicken out. This grocery is clean, impeccable and just all-around top notch. I was impressed by the butcher area which was very clean and transparent. The butcher was female and she appeared to be new so it took quite a long time to get my meats. That said, i've never seen a female butcher in my entire life while living in Brooklyn. To see one at an Arabic store was pretty astounding. Kudos for progress! The other butchers are extremely fast and appeared to be veterans making clean, quick cuts. The selection here is fantastic but this is not a "healthy" grocery as evidenced by the large quantities of sweets and other desserts. You can of course eat very clean and healthy if you stay away from that entire area of delicious, mouth watering baklava. The clerk was very nice and helpful and even a lady taking inventory stopped to offer help to my mom. Shopping here was really a nice experience and i'll be back. Note: I found out about this store from a flyer I received in my apartment in an entirely different part of Brooklyn. Very intelligent of them to reach out far and wide. I use to love coming to this store. I use to get all my groceries, meats and poultry from here. They were very affordable and clean. But now they much more expensive in comparison to other shops and their meats aren't as fresh as they use to be. Very disappointment Becareful with the meat. I usually come here for grocery shopping however stopped. Multiple incidents: I purchased about 3 pounds of chicken breast and 5 pound of chicken legs. Went home to cook some of the chicken when I open the bad it smelled like sewer like smell. It was horrible. Another incident: I purchased those spices that come in plastic wrapping. I think this supermarket is overpriced. Their selection of items is ok. Lots of spices and olives. But $8.49 for a pack of seedless green grapes?!? Outrageous. This is but one example. Also, I purchased some Good Humour strawberry shortcake ice cream bars from here and they were all melted and deformed by the time I got home... it's December and I only live 5 minutes from this place. We were exploring Brooklyn and saw Balady Grocery store. With the snow we had to park several blocks away but well worth it. We've travelled a great deal but there were so many things that were new to us in the store. Great destination for food tourism but don't block the aisles. Beautifully laid out. The meat counter looked spectacular. Fruits and vegetables equally appealing. We never knew this part of Brooklyn existed. A return is inevitable. There are recipes I've skipped over because I didn't know where to find the ingredients. And I'm aware of Kalustyans. We missed the home goods store unfortunately. We'll save that for another day. And everyone, absolutely EVERYONE was masked and maintaining a safe courteous distance. read more

I've walked by this store many times, but I was inspired to stop in today since I needed groceries and was curious about the place. The store is very clean, well stocked with a huge selection of Mediterranean and middle eastern goods. The meat section is sparkling clean and well organized. I picked up some halal chicken and some kofta patties (here, it's "kefta"). The latter are simply fantastic - I don't think I'll ever make a plain old burger again. The staff is very friendly and cheerful, too. It's everything you hope for in a local grocery. Bottom line is that I have a new favorite grocery store. This is a mecca for Middle Eastern food. There a couple little grocers scattered on 5th ave but this is the main one where you can find it all in once place. My favorite section here by far are the veggies and spices. I mean, where else can you find fresh dates and pistachios without paying an arm and a leg? Here, forget WF. The spices are plentiful, there are jars and self service scoops as well. Staff is nice, they don't gawk at you like some ethic places I've been to. The meat section is probably one of my least favorite-it doesn't really look as clean or well kept as the rest of the store. Overall? Balady's a 100%,authentic, Middle Eastern supermarket in Brooklyn, hands down the best. Fully stocked and equipped with lots and lots of goodies. Did I mention that the prices here are cheap and reasonable, and did I mention that they have lots and lots of spices. I love this store for their dry goods and frozen selection, but am always underwhelmed by their meat counter. They do have good prices, but my meats and chicken always go bad within a day or two. Not to mention the smell that usually lingers by their meat counter. I just get the feeling every time I go that they aren't really up to date with sanitation. I come here for dry goods and some frozen items, but can't justify saving a couple bucks on meat and poultry when it's already rotting in the fridge less than a day later.
