We let the instructor know ahead of time through someone already at the studio that we were running just a few minutes late. Instead of showing any understanding, we were told that if we weren't there on time, the doors would be locked. We arrived only five minutes late, and the doors were, in fact, locked. To make matters worse, we were still charged a no-show/cancellation fee even though we did show up. Life happens, and a little grace goes a long way. This felt unprofessional, inflexible, and more focused on collecting fees than treating customers with basic courtesy. As a single mom, it took time and money to plan this outing with friends, and it was supposed to be something uplifting. Instead, it was a frustrating and disappointing experience.

Checking in was easy, and for my first time, it was so helpful to get a quick overview of the equipment and get full explanations and demos of the sets of exercises we were going to tackle. It was nice knowing what to expect ahead, and a good rotation through core, legs/glutes, obliques, and upper body. Lots of first or second timers and this class and I felt supported/guided. Instructor was walking around giving feedback, and asked ahead of time on permission for light touch corrections. It was a great pilates/strength training type workout! Adaptable to different experience and fitness levels. I'm definitely still sore two days out. I think most of the workout could be replicated at home with weights, bands, and sliders, but it's very fun to use the fancy reformer machine and be guided through / not have to plan or program a really effective workout.

Overall solidcore is my favorite workout I've ever tried and I'm totally a super fan for life. Unfortunately this wasn't my favorite studio. Pros: 1. Instructor was phenomenal (I took class with Jane S) - she offered a lot of versatility in the class, offered plenty of modifications and amplifications, and clearly knew what she was doing. Gave shoutouts to individuals within the class which I always really like. Probably one of the best solidcore instructors I've taken class with 2. The class itself is awesome as mentioned above. I'm just totally obsessed with solidcore - can't recommend it enough for someone looking for a challenging but high-energy full body strength class. Cons: 1. The reformers at this studio needed a major facelift. They were rusty, the rubber covering the strings was falling off, and I think they have smaller platforms than the standard sweatlana (although that may have been my imagination). I'm not sure if they were just really old or maybe purchased from another studio secondhand or something but they were soooo bad compared to the quality that I'm used to at solidcore 2. No lockers in this studio (just bins) which is obviously a risk for theft, etc. not the end of the world but I feel like having lockers is a pretty baseline request All in all, I don't live in Michigan full time so I likely won't be back anyway, but if I did live in the area I'd return as I just absolutely love the workout. SPENGA is new to the Ann Arbor community. Overall five…read morestars. Here are my favorite things: when you walk in, there are readily accessible lockers. So go ahead and bring your water bottle, winter coat, keys and wallet. You can set your own code. It costs zero extra dollars to use a locker. They're white with an access code and very useful to use. SPENGA went out of their way to make sure you are ready to work out. Extra tampons in the bathroom. Hair ties or ear plugs or gum to grab if you need it at the front desk. Really friendly and smiling faces greet you as you walk in. If you come early enough and are working out with a friend, you can request your bikes to be next to each other. The staff are SO personable that they'll make a note if you are friends with someone so next time you come in they'll put your bikes together. I mean come on! That's service! I have a hard time in my own life to figure out who I'm friends with , lol! Their equipment is all brand new and their facility is clean, updated, and modern. My personal favorites are how long and new their yoga mats are. I can stretch out fully on it without touching the floor. The first time I used their mat I was surprised how new it felt. The bikes are all new cycling tech. They have enough weights for everyone to have a station so you don't have to share which is nice if you want to adjust your weights. SPENGA is three parts. Spin, strength, and yoga. It feels like you're going clubbing inside. They show you which section you are doing by illuminating with lights the section you're working out. Everything else is in the dark. It makes the workout feel more exclusive, like you're part of some cool club. It took me about 2.5 sessions to fully understand how to adjust the resistance of my bike to make my "bar" light up green. The spin portion was by far the hardest to understand what was going on. Go 20 to 30 min early so an instructor can assist you. Once you get the hang of it, it's a good workout. The music is awesome. Just be prepared to have watery legs and a sore bum. I would love strength more if there were less transitions during the very quick 20 min. The workout definitely had me sweating! So it's a good workout. It just moves way too fast for me. I'd rather do just a couple of movements in that time period. The workouts are a combination of using dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands, steps, and medicine balls. I love the yoga part because I never stretch in my life, lol. I would recommend to the instructors that some of your audience has never done yoga before and are unfamiliar with the names. So demonstrating instead of just announcing is helpful. They have blocks and straps for ppl like me who are inflexible. But Like I said this is my favorite part. I feel really accomplished at the end of yoga. I love it. Overall, I find SPENGA to be really pricey. I don't think I can commit to their higher prices. If they lowered their one time visits I would go more. However it is a great workout and a great atmosphere. The coaches are kind and pumped and great at what they do. The facility is impeccable. I definitely recommend anyone to go and check it out. I have not regretted going when I went. I've done about five sessions and always left feeling great.

When I moved into the Ann Arbor area about a year ago, I was on the hunt for some low…read moreimpact+strengthening exercise. I'd never really enjoyed yoga before, but the wonderful team at aUM Yoga has made me a convert! They do primarily serve the University of Michigan community, so you need to be ok with taking class with college students...but I'm totally fine being one of the few older townies amongst the 20-somethings! The teachers are welcoming, I've never felt out of place (in fact, they were greeting me by name by my 2nd or 3rd class!). I also appreciate that the teachers are always receptive to feedback - and even willing to stay after class to help folks with any poses or answer questions. The general vibe is friendly, open, positive, supportive, and empowering - which is really what keeps me coming back. You feel good all around, not just physically, when you leave class. Jessie, Chelsea, Annella, and Helena are instructors I've taken from the most often, and they all have been very knowledgeable and wonderful to learn from. Each obviously has their own style (each is aspirational for me!), but they clearly are on the same page philosophically, share best practices, and genuinely enjoy each other which is lovely to see. They are all deeply invested in the practice of yoga as well as the students in their classes. I enjoy the music (teacher's choice but generally not stereotypically "yoga"-y good stuff with a beat), the temperature (warm but not hot), and the space (the studio does have permanently installed poles since it's a yoga & pole studio - but I kind of enjoy how they establish lines and spacing for our mats). They don't do hands-on corrections (which is actually COVID-friendly); their approach is to talk you step by step through the poses and flows as well as demonstrating themselves. Vinyasa 1 was a great place to start as a beginner - shorter, more straightforward flows (usually 2 that you run through 3 times), a bit slower (though interesting enough for more advanced yogis to enjoy and add challenge as they see fit). Vinyasa 2 is a step up because the flows are longer and a bit more complex, have even more room for adding challenge based on personal choice, and give the class opportunity to do one more run of the flow on your own time and pacing. They have a whole range of pole dancing classes as well, which I'm trying to screw up the courage to get into, and offer some interesting yoga teacher trainings and retreats. As someone with a dance background, I've really loved the interesting, varied flows that the teachers put together - I would actually describe some of them as similar to dance combinations! And as one who is not so fond of balances and inversions, they don't include a whole lot into the usual flows, and when they are, I don't feel pressure to take those on if I don't feel it. I've found that over the year, I've learned the poses and correct technique pretty organically, and I've DEFINITELY felt the changes in my body. After 2 babies, I feel like I'm starting to get some core muscles back! And the mental/emotional benefits have been great as well. They have nice new client offers - discounted 1st class or one month unlimited classes. I started with class packs but quickly shifted to unlimited classes - and have enjoyed dropping in whenever I have the time. Though you need to pre-register for classes, I've never had problems getting into classes I've been interested in. Perhaps this is due to a post-COVID slowdown, but this has been the case even as folks have been more out and about. So - clearly, I'm a fan of aUM Yoga! I'd highly recommend anyone - novices and experts, students and townies - check out this warm community.

I have been looking for a yoga studio here in Ann Arbor and attended a free yoga class here to see…read moreif I would like the studio/instruction/etc. I registered early to ensure I could get a spot, assuming they would cap registration. They did not, in fact, seem to cap registration. There were 63 people in a a medium-sized room, and mats were laid out by staff ahead of time in such an array that there was no room between mats for people to walk through. During the class, the heat was cranked up, and with 63 people in the room, it was incredibly hot. In a hot yoga class, I was surprised to see you could not walk out of the room safely. People were so close together that their sweat was hitting your face. My friend got kicked in the face and chest three times. You could not even spread your arms in a warrior two. The teacher clearly recognized it was wild because she kept making jokes about it, which helped but not that much because it felt unsafe. I tried to tell the owner when she added me on Facebook (which was wild in itself) and she just said that their usual classes are not that busy. I could not believe that the owner would be fine with having such an unsafe environment for the class- having a hot room with no escape with people unable to even reach for their water bottles because of the lack of room!!! It felt like a fire hazard, or at least a medical one. Still looking for a yoga studio if anyone knows of a good one around here.

My Review for PR Fitness is based on five group runs with them I participated in while training for…read moremy first marathon this Fall. PR Fitness is a spin-off of Running Fit's 501 Runner's group, and is intended to help endurance athletes train for Personal Records in triathlons, marathons, etc. PR Fitness' current group run business model is that all runs are free and on a drop-in basis, making it a wonderful and cheap way to enjoy distance running in a group setting. The founders are very open and communicative, offering training advice on the runs. They also offer paid training consultation sessions. Longer runs are generally mapped out with rest stations (water, gatorade), every couple of miles; runners set their own pace at whatever rate they're comfortable with. The Saturday morning sessions are well organized and offer a convenient venue to long distance train in a group setting. The weekday runs occur after 6, and are shorter in distance. Overall, PR Fitness has gotten off to a great start, developing a set of followers passionate about fitness and record setting, while still maintaining a Beginner Friendly vibe.
