His teaching style/philosophy, professionalism, experience, strong yet encouraging communication style, and organizational style are unequaled in this business. 1. At the beginning of the sessions, he consulted with clients to set a clear and achievable goal and reached the goal by the end of the promised sessions. It was my first time learning how to golf (I started from zero background knowledge/experience, didn't even had a club), and my goal was to get to the point where I can enjoy golfing without sabotaging myself from establishing any bad habits or postures. What I like the most about Paul's teaching style was that he gave me immediate feedback when I was learning 1) grip, 2) stance, 3) backswing, 4) full swing, 5) follow-through, and 6) body turn. This immediate feedback style tremendously helped me not develop any bad habits from the beginning, which I appreciate SO MUCH. Additionally, whenever I had questions, I was able to get my questions answered promptly. Paul shared online and offline (book/media) resources to get his client informed with the correct information. 2. Paul is professional and experienced with appropriate credentials. I firmly believe his professional demeanor and attributes came from his long years of experience as a trainer. Having an adequate amount of knowledge is important as a trainer. The thing is-just because trainers have the knowledge, this doesn't mean they have real-world experience. But, Paul does and gets results for a client. Period. 3. Also, another aspect I really liked about my learning experience with Paul was his clear yet encouraging both verbal and non-verbal communication style. This style also aligns with motivating his clients intrinsically. His empathetic listening as well as the way he gets the information across to clients are top-notch. As a person who speaks English as a third language, I felt lucky to have Paul as my coach because he was patient enough to explain until I understood his cueing. Also, this is more about organizational style: whenever we needed to set up a schedule for following sessions, he shared a google invitation with a client. In this way, both clients and the trainer were able to keep the schedule organized on both ends. We'd been on a downward spiral for several years with our eating habits and lack of exercise, but we had no idea things had gotten that bad. The doctor's diagnosis was actually a blessing in disguise, because it led us to finding Paul. We knew that we needed to see someone who was a nutritionist as well as a trainer, mainly to help my husband with his blood sugar levels. He was great at helping us understand how what we ate would impact us throughout our day, tailoring his advice for a diabetic and a non-diabetic. I'm a bit of a self-professed foodie, so this was the hardest part for me personally. Paul made it easier by forcing me to be accountable for what I was eating and to really examine my nutrition as a whole. Then there is the training...I was a little curious as to how he'd handle me and my husband training at the same time. We're pretty much opposites when it comes to working out. I enjoy it and while I may balk at certain things, I'll generally do them. My husband on the other hand is pretty new to the gym and doesn't really enjoy working out. Paul is an amazing trainer! He's able to motivate both of us equally, pushing us to do more reps/lift more weight than we thought we could. He's great at challenging each of us to get the most out of our sessions. And I can say....it's definitely paid off! We've both gained more muscle and lost more fat than I think we would have been able to on our own (I dropped from 47% down to 33% body fat in 6 months). The overall improvement to our health has been dramatic as well; we both have more energy and make fewer trips to the doctor's office. While we still have a ways to go to hit our goal weights, after seeing what can be accomplished in just 6 months with Paul, we're confident that it will happen!!

The following 5 months I was left a piece of paper in a bin to grab each week. Nothing on my plan had anything to do with what I did the week prior, even though I took detailed notes on what I did. I was not spoke to at all for months. The owner Angel just sat on his phone or in the office and never worked with me once. When I asked for extra stretching plans for my hamstring I was told to do it on my own at home. So what was I paying $100 for? A piece of paper with a random plan? I can easily do that at another gym for half the money and actually have a shower in the facility. When I went to cancel he charged me again. Now I'm in a dispute over the charge. Don't go here.

As a first-time drop in client, I am familiar with the need for waivers, etc. but was not greeted or presented with one - I had to ask for it and ask how to check in. It seemed the usual trainer/owner was out of town. The trainer leading the class did not offer technique help, corrections, nor any interaction/motivation. She simply acted as a timer and stood at the front of the room. It was a good work out but not much of a class experience!

I love that a workout can be modified for specific needs. I pick the class times that work for me. My trainer Jen is absolutely amazing! She has helped me with food plans & has been a huge impact on my lifestyle change. It's been less than 4 months & I have lost 26 lbs & gone down a size in clothes. It took about 6 months but I found it became an important daily part of my life. In January of 2018 I followed my Chief to Kensington Valley Crossfit. Everything at KV is top notch from the equipment and facility to the coaching. But what I like most about the gym is the members are not $$$$ signs. It's not uncommon to hear "tell your friend just to come in", "just check someone in for class" or "what can we work out to get you to keep coming". My own personal gains aside, it is refreshing to see an atmosphere that focuses more on individual growth than the monetary growth of the business. In the end, I think the investment in the individual will provide Kensington Valley CrossFit with far a greater return than imagined. All that being said, when you make your New Years resolution this year, give KV a try. You'll be glad you did!

The decor looks a bit dated compared to say the newly constructed L.A fitness - but the facilities are quite comprehensive - I use the strength training facilities, my partner makes use of the included fitness classes, and my kids love the indoor play area and pool, and great outdoor pool / recreation area during the summer. Great place to host birthday parties too. Hard to find this combo anywhere else. I also find that Liberty being independently owned leads to better service than I experienced at L.A Fitness and Planet fitness - the people who work at Liberty have often times been around for years and seem to care more. If you are a solo adult, the extra cost might be harder to justify. But for our family, this is hands down the best fitness club in Ann Arbor.

In the last year they've been renovating quite a bit to update the spaces, equipment, etc, which has helped the overall vibe. They started by painting and reflooring the main workout room and are currently renovating and updating the indoor lap pool and hot tubs/saunas. The locker rooms are clean and the lockers are easy to use. The workout equipment is in great condition and even during their busiest times it's easy to get a treadmill or a bike. Plenty of TVs and things to keep you occupied with as well as you're huffing and puffing along. They have a few rooms for specialized classes--group fitness, spin and yoga. Now, I've only done the yoga classes so I can't comment on the others but the yoga classes I've attended were good (restorative yoga). I've always felt a million times better coming out than when I went in. There's a lot to do for families too. With a big kid's complex with a play area, rock climbing wall and indoor water park for fun during the winter months (also open in the summer). The outdoor complex is awesome and open Memorial to Labor Days. To be honest, this was the selling point for me. They have a few lap lanes for adult swimming (yes there are only two but I never had a problem getting a lap of my own this summer and I went several times a week) a bigger "play" area in that pool for the older kids/teens, and a splash/smaller pool for kids with a nice water slide. The outdoor cafe area has beverages, smoothies, frozen yogurt, and a few hot items for lunching. There's a small playground and even a few holes of mini golf in the complex as well. Plus outdoor tennis courts, of course. The club is big on tennis and they have a ton of courts inside as well. Plus classes, teams, and more. I feel like there's always a tennis club gathering when I'm there. There's a small indoor cafe as well with snacks, water, smoothies and such. They close around 7:30pm every day so it's more for lunch or a post-work pick me up before your workout. They have a small spa area upstairs with pedicures and massages. When you join you get a coupon for either or so I booked one and splurged on another. Great solitary environment. I had a beautiful pedicure and one of the best massages I've ever had. It's just a little pricey to do often, but if I could I would. It's definitely not a cheap membership, but I get a generous stipend from work for a fitness membership which covers most of the cost. If not for this I'm not sure I could swing it. But since I can, I try and make the most of my membership.

Fit Theorem in Livonia is a great kickboxing studio. They were formally called/owned by "I Love…read moreKickboxing". They have a nice introductory offer where you get three classes and a free pair of boxing gloves for $30. They currently have 4 options for colors of gloves: royal blue, neon yellow, green, and orange. I chose the yellow because they glow in the black lights at my other glow boxing class. The gloves are left over from when they used to be "I Love Kickboxing" and you can kind of tell who's new by the color of their gloves. They used to have pink and purple gloves too. They like you to arrive about 15 minutes early to your class. They do temperature checks at the door which is nice. They have cubby holes to put your stuff. There's a front lobby area and the kickboxing area is large and spacious. The bags are standing instead of hanging so you can really give them a good kick lol, and they're on a mat which is comfortable and great on your joints and feet. When you first arrive, you take your shoes off to be on the mat. When you sign up for classes, you do it through the Fit Theorem app. Sundays and Mondays they offer a Foundations Kickboxing class which I would highly suggest starting with first. They teach you all of the punches and the combos are less complicated while you're still learning and working on form. Fridays they have their Fri-yay class which is super fun and hyped up. People are dancing between circuits. The combos are pretty advanced though and get more complicated so this is a good class to work up to. I actually went to this as my first class, not knowing anything about boxing lol. Garvis, one of the instructors came over and helped me and basically gave me a one-on-one session. He was super helpful and I feel like I learned a lot about the punches and stance and getting the form and posture right. Brittany teaches the Fri-Yay class and she is so sweet, encouraging, and high energy. It was a lot of fun! All of the instructors are very nice, helpful, and encouraging. I like how they break down the actual punches and kicks here and they'll walk around and give you pointers on how to improve. I did a foundations class and it was really great too. The classes are done in intervals/circuits with a few minutes doing punch combos on the bag and then a few minutes off the bag, on the mat doing some cardio. The air conditioning is always icy cold inside which I love because you can really get hot/sweaty during the workout. The music is always hype/fun and really helps you get into it. The instructors have a microphone on so you can hear them well. Fit Theorem also offers yoga and kettle-ball/strength training classes. They offer challenges sometimes and it's about $399 for unlimited classes for 42 days and includes weight-loss/dietary coaching too. If you lose 25 lbs or 6 % of your body weight, they'll refund you the money you paid for the challenge. Drop-in classes are $20 a class. Five classes is $97 and 10 classes are around $179. I really like Fit Theorem for kickboxing. They're so great at breaking down and teaching you the punches, kicks, combos, and the instructors are really good: really passionate about what they do and are so helpful, and encouraging. Class attendees are all different skill levels, weights, and ages. Some people are pros who have been doing this for years and some people are just starting out with their first kickboxing class. They're located in a strip mall with a grocery store and Jimmy John's and there's always lots of parking spots available.
