You know, I haven't the slightest clue as to what kind of restaurant this is. They sell things like baked chicken with potatoes but then they also sell roti and oxtail. I work across the street and my co-workers frequent this place but no one can tell me what kind of place they are because menu is not very focused. Judging by the owner's accent though, I am going to assume Panamanian all the way. I just know that the employees are so damn nice and the food is yummy. Really good, cafeteria style Caribbean! Super cheap but not lacking in quality. They have always been out of mac and cheese every time I've ordered, which is annoying since occasionally they take too long to tell me. But I can't complain about the quality, cost, and quantity. Jerk chicken is pretty spicy for me, though I am no expert. But oh so juicy and good. I also like supporting the underdog restaurant that might not be sexy enough for a NYTimes write up, but makes delicious food nonetheless. My wallet doesn't mind either. Ive only every picked up or ordered delivery, so can't speak to service. (I imagine it's super casual.) Just hoping for some improvement on delivery speed and keeping food in stock. read more

I stopped going there because the attitudes started sucking. I asked the wife to cut up the chicken from the lunch special one day and she yelled at me, saying, she will do it because she knows me , I used to come a lot??? It was so my daughter could eat it easier. Then I ordered a burger and fries on the phone and was told to come down for it in 20 minutes . Arrived in 25 I asked where is my meal, Anthony got mad and said he's about to put the burger in now, and I said I can't wait. He said I have no patience :/ yeah I guess I am the wrong one huh. Disgusting customer service. The "manager" does not know how to talk to people. I ordered my food then was told that I had to leave. I had no clue that this was a policy as such for this place. YUMMY!!! A hidden gem of the local Medgar Evers College C.U.N.Y. community!!! I so enjoy Balboa's! This restaurant serves dishes that are cooked to perfection. The staff here are warm and welcoming. This family business have been here for years and have definitely mastered servicing others. My favorite dish here at Balboa's is the grilled salmon. I enjoy it because it is lightly seasoned allowing the the smokiness of the grill to season it the rest of the way, leaving the outside deliciously crisp, while the inside stays moist. Coupled with the Mac&Cheese (OMG) and a salad (to feel good about eating the insane portion of homestyle mac&cheese). Beyond satisfying, just DELISH for no good reason! I've been coming here for years. When I worked from home, I came here 15+ times a week. Marissa and Anthony really treat you like you're a member of the family. Seriously. She baked me a cake for my birthday. The food is great, and it is incredibly reasonably priced. They make pretty much everything from scratch, including the BBQ sauce which is ridiculous. And the buffalo wings. I've had a lot of great wings at a lot of places here in the city, and these wings are in the top 3 for sure. Unlike any other buffalo wings you've had, but they're absolutely unreal. And now they also have a bar! I've been waiting a long time for Anthony to open the bar, and it's great. The beer choices are top notch (six point, lagunitas, dogfish, etc). Just a wonderful place all around. read more

I love this restaurant and order from here frequently, but there is NO WAY I can give them more than three stars. As soon as you order from Balboa, you better get your phone handy because they will be calling to let you know they are out of one or more of the menu items that you requested. There has probably not been more than one time that I have actually ended up with the food that I originally wanted or ordered in the first place. In my opinion I feel that this place has a very delicious cuisine. However, the delivery service at Balboa Restaurant is very disappointing and poor reason being because whenever I place an order and receive it I always has a dish missing, this has happened to me at least 4 times when ordering from this restaurant. Another, problem I have with Balboa restaurant is when I order a dish from them they always give me a totally different dish nothing even similar to what I ordered, this problem hasn't only occurred to me but also has occurred to my family and friends that I recommended to this restaurant, which was a huge mistake. The waiters were nice but the "owner" was very nasty. The way he runs his business is not professional at all. To order food to go, he does not want people to sit and wait, he rather have them stand, thank goodness I did not have a disability. I have lived in the neighborhood for over 20 years and saw Balboa before the renovation; because of such renovation I guess the "owner" does not know how to treat the customers anymore. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS RESTAURANT- Extremely unprofessional and very poor customer service. I live in Crown Heights and love supporting local businesses. Last Saturday, around 12:30pm I decided to stop by Balboa for the first time. Upon entering the restaurant, I noticed it was empty for a Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Only one couple eating in the restaurant. I approached the bar and asked the bartender for a menu and told him I would like to place a to-go order. I placed my order with him and walked to the end of the bar to sit down. 5 minutes later, the bartender walks to the end of the bar where I was sitting and told me that I couldn't sit there while I waited on my food.....I was extremely confused......The manager walks over and told me that the bar area is for dining ONLY and that I couldn't sit while waiting on my food. I proceeded to ask her " So where do I wait for my order?" She pointed to the wall next to the chair that I was sitting in and said "Sorry, these are the rules".....I look around to see that the restaurant was still empty...the only couple in the restaurant overhears my conversation with the manager and the bartender - they also thought this was ridiculous. I told the manager to cancel my order and I will never come back again or spend a single dollar in this restaurant. This is not the way to conduct business!! read more

I enjoyed a beautiful evening seeing music in their back room this past Wednesday! The back room is spacious, with lighting that creates a great vibe. The food is out of this world- I've only tried the baked chicken and jerk chicken so far, but can't wait to try the rest. Happy hour specials can't be beat in this neighborhood. In my opinion, Balboa's Restaurant offers some of the best cuisine in all of Brooklyn. It is extremely difficult to find a restaurant that serves authentic Caribbean cuisine with a soul food twist, and Balboa's will exceed any expectations you might have. Their Mac n' Cheese is tastier than any other Mac n' Cheese I've tried, including several Manhattan steak house versions. Their BBQ Chicken is soft and tender, and the sauce is light, but flavorful. I really appreciate being able to enjoy BBQ sans heartburn. I also particularly enjoyed their Oxtail Stew, which I found to be both hearty and meaty. Don't forget to try their Cheesecake, but fair warning, it is addictive! It's light and fluffy, and has just the right amount of cherries and graham cracker crust to complement the cake. I give this restaurant five stars and highly recommend it to all of the foodies in the Brooklyn area! read more

Really enjoyed this place. The menu has enough variety that if you want Caribbean food you can have it, but if you're not in the mood, there are wings or burgers or BBQ. I had the pepper steak and 1/4 leg of jerk chicken. Both were delicious. The jerk chicken had a nice kick to it. My wife had the ribs and chicken combo, she really enjoyed it. The service was very courteous. The chef kept coming out and checking on us which was very nice. I don't get to this area of Brooklyn very often, but I would definitely stop by this place again if I had the chance. read more

Oxtails were tender and meaty. Chicken super juicy and tender. Don't know what sauce they put on it but it was good.. Sweet with oregano mostly I think. I cannot even believe the amount of OK reviews this place has. First of all the atmosphere is horrible. It literally feels like you're eating in a bathroom. The menu is too "all over the place" The portions are small and too expensive for what it it is. I don't ever write bad reviews but the thing that has thrown me over the top is the RUDE manager and her RUDE husband. I have never in my life experienced worse management at a restaurant. My son and I had a delicious meal at Balboa's. He had the curried goat and vegetables, and I had grilled shrimp, vegetables, and a salad. Shrimp is one of my favorite meals, and I have it often when eating out. This was the best shrimp I've had in quite a while--better than what I had in the Outer Banks of North Carolina where it's fresh off the boat. The waitress was attentive and friendly.
