Baleen is one of my favorite shops in Seattle to buy handmade jewelry! I've been here multiple times and my jewelry is still going strong, even in the shower. The jewelry is sold at a very reasonable price. They also sell products from other brands, like Baggu and Chunks, to name a couple. I had an awful experience and am pretty upset about it. Don't order online from them. They jam your entire order, no matter the value, into a single USPS package, which is only insured for up to $100, and with their brand plastered on the outside, making it a target for mail theft but impossible to be fully reimbursed for if/when the contents get stolen. After a number of emails back and forth, they were not able to send me the original mailing receipt which is required to file a claim with USPS, so it seems unlikely I'll get anything from the claim anyways. They even gave me a "tip" that I should look into getting a secure mailbox, as if that would prevent an empty box from being delivered in the first place. In the end, I spent $140 for a box with nothing more than tissue paper and promotional material. Oh, did I mention they generously offered to send me the products again if I pay 60% more than I already paid? Thanks, but definitely not going to throw more money in your direction only to lose it again. Update: Just to clarify, this is not a case of mailbox theft...I was physically delivered an empty box by the carrier. There is always risk involved with shipping, and as the shipper, it's your responsibility to ship in a way that reasonably reduces risk and puts shipping liability on the carrier. Since you put more than $100 of your product in a box that's only covered for up to $100, you put the risk on the customer. I can't possibly be refunded now. You also could have reduced risk within reason by not advertising on the outside of the box that there is jewelry inside. read more

I was so excited to find the shine hug stud earrings, I had been looking online for that exact style and was thrilled to find them at this local small business. They were just were delivered to me yesterday, and I wore them today for a half day of running errands -- and at some point one of them fell out of my ear. I am really disappointed that the design of these is so flawed they couldn't withstand me running to the grocery store and Home Goods the very first day I wore them. A waste of $50. Hopefully they will spend more time on designs that are pretty and also functional. read more

Finally visited this jewelry shrine of Baleen. I have several pieces already and I just want more. I am a sensitive skinned gal and I can wear their jewelry just fine. :) I love the simplicity yet uniqueness of their designs. My desire in jewelry is classy and everyday yet statement making. Statement meaning I have good taste, hahah. The gal in the store who greeted me was just a peach. She went above and beyond customer service with some pieces I bought in to get a "tune up" as well as one I wanted to exchange. No sass, just class. I get compliments whenever I wear Baleen jewelry and it makes me happy that they are a responsible and local company run by a sweet and talented pair. Bonus- dogs allowed. :) read more

I purchased a pair of Baleen earrings in February 2022 (when I saw them) for my sister the following Christmas- I thought they were perfect. When I went to pull them out of the box for Christmas this year, they were so tarnished that I had to use sterling silver cleaner to clean them. Then, when I went to put back on the provided rubber backing for the earring (for the first time), the whole earring backing post broke away from the hoop-THIS IS NOT QUALITY. I contacted customer service and they told me that I would have to buy a replacement earring. Are you FREAKING kidding me?!? Crap. Don't waste money on these and then have to deal with customer service that does not stand by its slogan "We believe quality, handmade jewelry can be affordable and responsible" They are neither quality, nor responsible. read more

Lovely shop with an inspiring design studio on location. I had ordered some earrings on-line and ended up losing one of them so I had contacted the store to see if they would sell me one replacement and they kindly accommodated. I went to the store myself and I brought my husband with me. They have a beautifully curated selection of self-care products in addition to unique accessories. The hubby ended up buying an interesting contraption of a spice grinder and I bought a gorgeous hair pin. I look forward to supporting this local artisan and being further inspired! read more

Truth be told, I first saw Baleen's amazing jewelry while shopping at a local boutique in Honolulu, Hawaii. I took a picture of the piece and decided to look online for the designer later. I prefer to buy directly from the artist whenever possible. A year has gone by and my rose gold triangle earrings are a prized possession in my jewelry box. I was stopped almost daily with compliments on these earrings. Due to my own carelessness I lost one earring. I frantically went back to the website to search for the earrings and they're no longer listed. I emailed and explained the situation. Unfortunately, those particular earrings are no longer available was the response. A few hours later, I received an email saying they found a lone gold triangle earring that I can purchase after it has been rose gold dipped. I'm such a happy customer. They could've dismissed my email and moved on with their day but they didn't and they went the extra mile. Mahalo Baleen for having the aloha spirit all the way over there in Seattle. Ordered some cute earrings after seeing an ad & researching the company (seemed all positive). Regretting all of this now as I am SO SO SO disappointed in the customer service and am now out $75 and a gift for my little sister's graduation. My package was marked as delivered into a locked mailbox, but nothing was there. I gave it a few days to be sure and emailed them. Explained there was no way it could be stolen or lost as me and Mr. Postman are the only ones with access to the box. They basically told me tough sh*t, good luck next time. But offered me 30% off my next order? I'm sorry, but your solution to a lost package is to ask me to spend more money on earrings I apparently may or may not receive? That's INSANE, GREEDY and just PLAIN AWFUL customer service. The best part is they claim to be easy on your pocketbook on their website. What a steaming pile of dog doo doo. I emailed them back asking for a refund or a reship so now we wait and see if they have any sense of morality. I'd be very willing to update my review if they actually decide to make things right. This is really a customer service review, since my Baleen jewelry was a gift and I haven't been to the store. Unfortunately the clasp on my necklace broke after about a month of wear, I went online and saw that they offer repairs so I sent an email explaining the situation. They got back to me about an hour later with instructions for mailing in my necklace for repair. I popped it in the mail and it was repaired and back on my doorstep in about a week! I just paid to ship it to them. I'm very pleased with the whole interaction, can't wait to check out their shop in person! read more

Bought a cute looking paper clip chain. The content was mostly brass, I'm guessing. Tarnished my neck and could not be cleaned. Looks dull now and is unwearable. They have no refund policy and a very weak return policy. Cannot recommend. read more

I really like the jewelry at Baleen and have purchased some of their necklaces when I lived in Seattle. I was planning on buying some jewelry from them online for the holidays and was really put off by the use of Latino terms (taco party and three amigos) on two of their necklaces. This seems like cultural appropriation. Please change the names of these jewelry pieces. Are the owners Latino? Why are you using Latino names for your jewelry? I first discovered Baleen jewelry at the Frye Museum gift shop--I bought a pair of round gold studs that I wear everyday. I am officially hooked now that I have visited the darling boutique store in Ballard, filled with dainty beautiful earrings, bracelets, pendants, in addition to other gift items such as bags, jewelry dishes, cards.... I now have a gold taco necklace, gold rings, and an eye pendant, and nothing I bought broke the bank. Stop by Baleen for yourself or for that perfect feminine gift. read more

I wanted to share my terrible experience I had at this store on Saturday 1/20/18. My friend gave me a pair of earrings on 1/6/18 from this store. She said that I could exchange the item for something else if I wanted. I have an item similar to the ones she gave me. I wanted to exchange them for something else. I was prepared to spend more money than the earrings were worth. The sales clerk said that they have a two week return or exchange policy. I arrived at the store on Day 14. I don't live in Ballard and it is not easy to get to the store. I think it is rediculous that the sales clerk would not allow me to exchange my earrings for something else. I was not asking for any money back, in fact I was going to spend more. I am so appalled at this stores policies and their service. I have worked in retail for over 20 years and I know that exceptions can be made. I have no plans to return to this store and I want to warn others of this stores policy. Almost broke my neck whilst turning around to take a glimpse at this shop while driving by it. I received a pair of earrings from them on my birthday from a friend and NEEDED to be around it's buddies. My hubby and I came in here on a sleepy Saturday and the shop was empty. The sales woman promptly greeted us when we arrived and was courteous and respectful while me and the hubby(he wasn't coerced I swear!) browsed through glorious displays of minimalist jewelry, trendy artwork, and PINS! Yes, PINS. All capitals because I found an Iris Apfel one that made me squeal!! This shop is away from the hullabaloo of dt Ballard so it doesn't get as many touristas frequenting it. It definitely needs more love from the good people of Seattle though, just saying. read more

I was given a pair of earrings from Baleen which didn't work on my ears (the posts didn't seem long enough). I procrastinated, but finally got in touch with the store by email. I live on the other side of the country. Even though I was well-past the return period, they graciously exchanged the earrings for another pair. Leah couldn't have been nicer or more generous. She always responded immediately to my emails. I mailed back my earrings and now have a new pair that work better for me. I hope some day I can visit the store in person. read more

My daughter gave me some earrings from Baleen for my birthday in November. They were not really my style, although she bought me some earrings and bracelet for Mothers day a while back and I love them. I do not get into the "city" hardly ever and I did not know that there is only a two week return policy. I am about a month late and all I wanted to do was to exchange the earrings for something else of equal value or more. They denied me any exchange. Terrible policy, bad customer service. This was no harm to them. I never wore the earrings and they could easily resale them. They said I should re-gift them. I do not do that.
