Awesome sandwiches, our group had the Döner Kebob with steak, lamb, chicken Falafels. The peppered seasoning was excellent! The server was very prompt and knowledgeable about the menu.

This is 100% not a traditional donor kebab. The meat is gyro meat and nothing more. Friendly ordering friendly, takeout OK bread and toppings, but I was expecting a donor kebab and I got a Gyro. I can't believe more people don't mention this.

My husband has been talking about how much he loves Doner Kebab for years, so when I saw a post for Balkan House we added it to our must visit list. Located in Hantramck, there is ample street parking available. There is also a lot across the street, but I am unsure if it's available for parking. I am also unsure if they have a dedicated lot behind the restaurant. Regardless, it was easy to find free parking. When we came in there was only one other group eating. There are not too many tables inside, and the interior is not fancy. There was a great playlist when we visited though. While there may not be much for ambiance, it more than makes up for it with the food. We did order the Doner Kebab, but you also have the options of a Doner bowl, Doner fries, or a Doner wrap. We went the traditional route, which was beef/lamb served in between some crispy white bread. It was topped with shredded cabbage, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and Doner sauce. It was definitely big enough to share, and at $12.50 with fries it was a great deal. The fries were not anything special, but they were very seasoned and delicious. We also ordered falafel, which is also served with Doner sauce. Trying the sauce with the falafel, it is definitely spicy. The order came with 5 falafel, and while they were not big in size they were very heavy. Overall it was a good flavor, but if you are sensitive to spice I would skip the sauce. The price was a little high at $7, but since we were splitting our main meal I did not have a problem paying that. I loved the addition of the DCFC scarves on the walls, as well as the different flags throughout the restaurant. Our food was ready in less than 5 minutes, and eaten probably just as quickly. I would recommend checking out The Balkan House if you are in Hantramck, or if you miss the taste of Doner Kebab. The food, service, and price will definitely have us coming back.

Luckily this place was open just down the street. The Döner sandwich actually sounded pretty good for a filling meal. There is absolutely no sitting allowed at all inside the restaurant, not even to wait for your carry out food either. They said they would bring the food out to the lovely exhaust infused patio or to your car. I told her I would wait on their sidewalk patio, but then was asked to leave the patio a few minutes later and to move to my car since I was not eating and only waiting for a carry out order. She said the the two ladies that came after me wanted to eat at the patio. I told her she's kicked me out of the restaurant after I put my order in and now she asked with a little guilt trip and pressure to leave the patio for their dine-in patrons. She said she's not kicking me out and I could go across the street and wait in my car, that's kicking me out since she suggested I go to my car. This place has a knack for making their patrons feel small. I had to stand by the garbage can, but close to the shop, yet out of the sidewalk and shop store path, so I wouldn't have to wait across the street and in my car. Their smoothies are not fresh, nor is their baklava. Their Döner is their best meal here, so they claim. They offer fries and a canned soda with their Döner sandwiches on Thursdays. The soda options are coke, sprite or Mountain Dew. I figured I should take the sodas since they were free and give them away, even though we don't drink soda at all. As I stood watching everyone else comfortably seated, they brought out a table and chairs for another family that wanted to sit on their patio, how sweet for them. My carry out Döner is taking longer than the dine-in orders of the family after me, with the same main meals, nicely executed and right in front of me to see too. My order took A little over 22 minutes to come out. I asked for no meat on my salad when I ordered, it came with lamb meat and plenty of it too. I tried a couple of pieces of lamb meat, they were bone dry as was the chicken meat in the Döner sandwiches. The fries tasted bad because they had cooled down and tasted stale and bad. The food here smells better than it tastes, sadly. The service was about a 1. The woman taking my order even snapped back at her male colleague about something. I felt uneasy the entire time I was here. The food is a 2 and that's being generous. The food was definitely not worth the $36.31 that was extorted out of me at all.

Heard about this from a coworker, and while we were in the area, I decided to give it a shot. Definitely very glad that he took me there. Fortunately they were still catering during Covid, so we ordered some takeout and enjoyed it outside on a nice Summer day. I think my only complaint here is just how messy it is to eat. Of course that's just the nature of this type of sandwich though. Other than that, extremely pleased with it. The tastes were awesome, everything was cooked just right, and it was very filling.

Tried this place on a whim at 9:15 on a Saturday. Thought they'd be annoyed of us walking in at that time since they close at 10, but they were ready to serve us. We were the only people in the joint, which I thought might be a clue that they don't get many diners, but I just think they don't get many diners after 9 pm. We were sat at booth, and our waitress helped us order since we really didn't know what anything was. She steered us to the 2 most popular menu items, the Doner and the Chevapi, and said she could have them cut in half, so each of us could try both. I loved the Doner. It's a Balkan/Bosnian/Romanian take on a Gyro, but way better. Their sauce is a mix of Tsaziki and Garlic sauce, and it's spicy! I could eat these sandwiches often. The Chevapi had this wonderful spongy bread with sausage, way too many onions, and a roasted red pepper sauce. This combo was good, but next time I would order it sans onions, or only a spoonful. We then decided to get crepes with fruit for dessert. Great call! I think they put Nutella on the crepes, bananas, strawberries, and chocolate drizzle. Yummy! Will definitely hit this place up for lunch sometime.

I've had doner in Berlin, Vienna, and Krakow. This place stacks up. The bread, sauce, meat, and veggies are damn near tastebud perfection. I usually head to Hamtramack for Polish food but this place might have changed that!

Not a fancy place, and a little chilly in the cold weather, but the food was outstanding! I had a Doner sandwich, and it was incredible. Although it isn't a "gyros", it's very similar - and I'll never eat one again because this Doner is soo much better! And the bread is amazing - the outer layer being delicately crisp, and soft on the inside. Also had Turkish coffee for the first time, and loved it! Prices are reasonable, and the staff is friendly.

This is what you come here for, The Doner Kabob. I saw the write up and had to try it. Don't be discouraged by the looks of the front, kind of like a house converted to a restaurant. It's what makes it unique and special. The house repurposed to the restaurant is awesome and definitely special. First time there, you should get the doner kabob, then you're free to get what you want. You can try to compare it to a gyro but it really is better than that. If I had a choice side by side, doner, for sure. I also tried their gyro salad, lots of cheese. The cheese was very tasty, no meat even with the name. It was ok, not sure if I would get it again though. Staff was very nice. It took some time to get water refills but overall helpful and nice.

One of my favourite things to do is eat at unique places that don't get alot of recognition. I'm not sure many people wake up one day and say "I want Bosnian food". But for anyone that does you are in luck, because Hamtramck is home to Balkan House. This space used to be another Bosnian restaurant years back, but the ownership, name and food has changed. Regardless it's still a fantastic place to grab a quality Eastern European meal. Even more appealing is the fact that they are probably the only place I know in Michigan where you can get a proper 'doner kebab', which is a Turkish sandwich that inspired the Arab shawarma and Greek gyro. They are popular throughout the world, but especially in former Ottoman territories. Both the lamb and chicken doner kebab sandwiches are amazing, and the people who make it are wonderful to say the least. It's also worth noting that Bosnians are Muslim, so the food is halal here as well. read more

This food was really good! I was visiting town and was looking for Balkan food, and this was the first one that came up. I placed an order over the phone and got a Cevapi sandwich (with sauces on the side). The bread/meat/sauce were all great, and I will definitely order this again. read more

A young wild child straight outta SW DETROIT joined the Army 1976 requested to be stationed in Germany. Eating and drinking everything I could find after 6 liters of Beer's found the Famous Turkish Doner Kebab a instant addiction for life. Just 4 months ago a Bosnian place in Hamtramck finally bring those memories back into my life. Yes folks the hype is very real. Just 2 year's ago a place in Dearborn had a Turkish guy who had the real deal, ashamed to say the media or foodies just wouldn't support. Balkan House so uniquely designed and delicious with 2 of my all time favorite European sandwiches. Chevapi and Doner Kebab OMG FABULOUS not just about the Meats that bread be pillows of deliciousness. We had both the Meat and Chicken Doner with a 10 pcs Chevapi outstanding balance of flavor. Also a order of Serbian Crepes just think Hungarian Palacsinta or Polish Nalasnike topped with fruits. The first Doner Kebabs was served on March 2, 1971, at Hasir in Berlin. It was called a doner kebab after the Turkish word "dondurmek" which means a rotating roast.The vertical rotisserie was invented in the 19th-century Ottoman Empire, and doner kebab inspired similar dishes such as the Arab shawarma, Greek gyros, and Mexican al pastor. So now I hope you got my attention you must visit soon. read more

The perfect solution to our Doner Kebab cravings! Full of flavor and a hearty portion, our doner kebabs were delicious. It had plenty of meat and veggies and was topped with this flavor packed sauce that made each bite awesome. We did take out which was easy and convenient. The staff was also really kind. What a find. It's located in a former house. Family like feel. Very clean. Service was good. Donar sandwich was soo good, plus it had a good spicy taste to it. Bread was really delicious. Cervapi was excellent also.fries were not that good. Only suggestions I might have would be- offer rice as a side dish and serve soda with a glass of ice. Will be back ! read more

Came on a weekday for dinner and we ordered the chicken and lamb doner. They were both really good but the lamb edged out and was super flavorful. Next time I'd ask the sauce to be on the side, otherwise it just gets too messy! Nonetheless, really delicious. Bon appetit! read more

The food at Balkan House is spot on. Everything has been delicious and fast, friendly service. The cevapi is as good as anyplace else... and the bread is amazing. The serving sizes are adequate (could always use just a little bit more) and the orders of cevapi could use some feta on the side (like other places provide). These points are minor compared to the delightful experience and great food! Balkan House has great food and the staff here is very friendly and outgoing! Highly recommended!! read more

Ok first let me say that the "donor" was good. It just was not a donor . If your looking for a "authentic Berlin donor" this is NOT it. One the meat is wrong. Its paper thin (think arby's) and not actual Doner meat. The biggest diffrence was the sauce .... Nothing like a Donor.. But like I said this was a very good sandwich ! Just not a Donor. The bread however was spot on and awesome .... read more

This place is a one of a kind experience! I have not had Balkan food prior to this and am very impressed with the food. The chicken Doner was amazing in a very fluffy bread which i've never had before. There are European drinks that you won't typically find else where. All of this adds up to learning a bit about a new culture via food. One thing to be careful of is that not all of the salads come with lettuce! I was surprised by that read more

My husband and I were so excited to have donar kebab in Detroit. I haven't had them since I visited my brother in Germany. The potions were huge. I could have ordered the smaller lunch kebab. Fries were cooked perfect. Bottles of water were brought to the table Excellent service even though the place was packed our waitress kept checking on us. The owner cane by to see if we enjoyed our meal. I wish I could have afforded the art for sale on the walls. read more

We ordered the Doners and they were very good. The bread they were served on was fabulous and so was the sauce. Small menu, if you don't eat meat there's only a salad and fried mushrooms as an alternative. The mushrooms were not good, Gordon food services. read more

This place used to be much better when they started. The bread used to be amazing, fresh, crispy on the outside, now it's some generic bun. I was craving a doner and we ordered the falafel ones, when they arrived they turned out to be 50% empty. We just ripped off the bread that had nothing on it and ended up with a sandwich half the size. This place was our favorite like 2-3 years ago, and now we probably won't order again. read more

I studied abroad in Madrid for a few months in college and came to love doner kebab. I was really excited to try Balkan House to see if it would be the same. While really good, their style was not exactly what I remember from Europe. I missed the red and white sauce combo. That being said, the sandwich was really tasty. But messy! I came for the Döner Kebab which I haven't had since 1992 in Germany. It's just like I remembered, soooo flavorful!! Way better than the standard gyro, served with sheets of meat. The pita bread is very fresh and delicious too. I also tried the small Chevapi. Very good, flavorful beef sausages served with lettuce, onion, and tomato on the side with a light and airy bread. Loved the tomato paste and sour cream cheese (?). Tastes like sour cream and cream cheese. Whatever it is, it's awesome!! I'll be back and highly recommend this restaurant. The food is amazing and worth the wait but the wait staff has no clue what they are doing.... We had to wait 45 minutes for doner kabob which seems sort of excessive but the food was amazing.... however we ordered an appetizer that never came and had to ask several times just to get water... Carry out is probably your best option here read more

Tried this new place with some friends from work. It took a good amount of time so if youre trying to fit this into a 1 hr lunch time, you should go at a different time. The service was okay since others who came after us got their food before us. They looked to be regulars. As far as the food, it was tasty. The right amount of spices. One thing I didnt know was that the bowl option is more of a dish with rice. If you're trying to dodge the carbs, maybe try something else. Overall it was a good experience and would give them another go in the future. read more

The food is excellent. I try to eat here often. The owner is usually on location or never far away. Restaurant is very clean and they take care to keep it that way. They recently added outdoor seating which is nice as well. read more

The food is good. The Doner was comparable to those in Germany with different bread, but I liked this bread better. The atmosphere is super quaint and unexpected. I appreciated the cleanliness and coziness. The service is soooooo slow. The server was nice, but inept. Her coworker was running around the crowded restaurant, cleaning up spilled smoothie, checking on everybody, and essentially servicing our server's frustrated tables. The food was good enough we will definitely go back when we have two hours for a lunch. I recommend, just be prepared to wait (and wait). read more

A little place with a lot of great flavors! It was my first time there and I had the chicken kabob & husband had the beef/lamb. Both were wonderful! I mentioned I was interested in trying more Bosnian food in the future and the waitress brought out some more things for me to sample! Everything was great even down to the seasoned fries. The vegan options are not worth it! $18 for a bowl! Lot of rice , 4 miniature falafels , onion , cuke and tomato with a flavorless sauce! Add on $5 for vegan!!! Wait, what?? I was still hungry!!! I can get a bowl at any mideastern restaurant that is heartier and health the price, and vegan! Nice try, but no thanks!!!! read more

Went here on Sunday night to have dinner with my family we waited an hour and 10 minutes and never got our food the wait staff was horrible and never attended to our needs. I would not recommend this restaurant. It may be good and I heard a lot of great reviews about the food but the wait staff really dropped the ball on service. read more

All I can say is WOW! This place is truly a hidden. All meat is halal (Kosher). The gyro doner kebab was super delicous. Sliced gyro meat with a nice sauce all in a nice fresh piece of bread. Also tried the CevapI (similar to sausage). Super delicious. The bread that they serve it in was amazing. Also super fresh. This place is a must try read more

I had heard great things about the Doner Kabab at Balkan House and happened to be in Hamtramck for a meeting, so I decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did. The Doner was amazing! Wow! Heard of this place through a friend. Decided to order takeout. My car smelled SO good on my drive home. We ordered the chicken doner. It's a sandwich done right. Perfection. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft and chewy. The chicken was dressed with a white sauce, I don't know what it is but I couldn't get enough. There's a balance of spice, tang, texture that makes the perfect sandwich. I cannot wait to come back! read more

My first impression: Noisy! Lots of hard surfaces. Difficult to hear the hostess, server and my wife. The tables were appropriately spaced for diners and servers to work with no bump & grind. We started by sharing a dozen oysters and the pear/walnuts salad. The oysters were a bit small-ish; but otherwise, excellent. Server took a drink order from my wife, but skipped me. Eh? I flagged down another server to order a Pino. It took a surprisingly long time to arrive. On the plus side, I was offered a taste to insure it was satisfactory - it was. The pear salad w/walnuts was excellent. The pears were sliced paper-thin. One of the joys of eating a properly ripened pear is the juicy explosion and thinly sliced pears defeat the juicy explosion. If the pears were fully ripe, perhaps cube them? Weirdly; the two sides (mushrooms, potatoes) were served before the entrees. The server noticed, seemed surprised and withdrew the sides, returning with our entrees (lamb shoulder, steak). Then the side returned. Both entrees were warm-ish and the sides were hot. The 14-day, dry-aged steak was ordered medium-rare and was seasoned and prepared as ordered. Again; warm-ish, not hot. I expected better beefy flavor for a dry-aged steak. One end was a bit chewy. Tenderness improved as I got to the other end of the steak. I ordered it with horseradish. I will admit to being a weirdo who loves spicy horseradish (and wasabi) that will clean the sinuses - this was "Ohio-spice'd" horseradish ... not creamy, but less spicy than Arby's Horsey sauce. The mushroom and the potato sides were served hot from the kitchen. Both were excellent, no complaints. The presentation of the steak needs improvement. It was a properly prepared, lonely lump of brown, served on a white plate with cracked ceramic glaze. The lamb shoulder was the better entree. For some reason, my wife was expecting Middle Eastern seasoning. The menu did not mention Middle Eastern seasoning and she did not ask, so that's on her, not the kitchen. I thought it was excellent. Gripe: After the entrees arrived, our server did not return to ask if the entrees were satisfactory. She did return later to ask if we wanted a second round of drinks. We did ... We were offered dessert and ordered, but never asked if we wanted coffee or an after dinner drink. Both desserts were excellent. Will we return? Probably ... not. With tip; dinner for two was $286. At this price point I expect better: Less noise, better beef and flawless service.

We also tried to the jerk taco and it was good and hot, but awkward to eat because there so much on top and it was just falling off as I was trying to pick it up and take a bite.

Feedback on My Recent Visit I recently visited THE BALKAN HOUSE in Hamtramck for the first time after seeing advertisements that gave the impression of a great experience. Unfortunately, my visit was disappointing on multiple levels. 1. Food Quality: * The bread was old and hard, and the fries were stale--so much so that my daughter nearly broke her teeth eating them. * The buns on the mini burgers appeared to be outdated as well. * The crêpes, which my children were excited about, were served cold and tasted old. 2. Service Experience: * During our visit, someone in the kitchen was arguing loudly on the phone, using inappropriate language. This was unprofessional and unpleasant for my children to hear. 3. Pricing Issues: * There was a discrepancy between the menu prices and the amount charged on my bill. When I inquired, I was told that the prices had changed but were not yet updated on the menu. While I understand that prices fluctuate, it is essential for businesses to keep their menus current to avoid confusion and frustration for customers. I used to live in Ferndale and was a regular at Balkan House, especially on Thursdays for their popular "Dönerstag" special. It was a highlight of the week--both the Döner and the wrap were included in the special back then, and the portions were generous, flavorful, and well worth the price. However, I recently revisited after a few years away and was sadly disappointed by how much things have changed. The wrap is no longer included in the special, and while I understand prices and policies can change, the overall quality and portion size have dropped significantly. The Döner I received had noticeably fewer vegetables and barely any meat. The bread gives the illusion of a full meal, but in reality, it felt underwhelming and unbalanced. I just dined here today for my second time. I've only tried the donër sandwich both times because it was obviously fantastic the first time around and needed to experience it again. It's a very quaint and comfortable spot to eat lunch but you will need a little time to enjoy your experience there. The staff is very friendly, I feel as if they will be able to handle the influx of business they will surely receive as word spreads of the quality taste of the food offerings.
