The city was bustling with people, and I was pleasantly surprised by how gorgeous the downtown area was. The café had a vibrant, energetic atmosphere that perfectly matched the excitement of the city. Our server was absolutely amazing and made excellent recommendations. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. Based on the recommendation, I ordered the corned beef hash with the cinnamon pancakes, and both were fantastic. Next time, I definitely want to try the red velvet pancakes! My friend ordered the Triple Triple Omelette with the original buttermilk pancakes, and we both chose the cheesy grits. The cheesy grits were very creamy, though I would recommend adding a little more butter to enhance the flavor. That was really my only critique. The restaurant was busy, but after dining there, I completely understand why. Despite the crowd, we were greeted immediately, and the service was prompt throughout our visit. I like this location better than the one in Troy. We stopped in on a random Tuesday for brunch and it was busy but we were seated right away. I imagine a reservation is a must for a weekend. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating, and drinks and food came out quickly. I appreciate they have espresso drinks, and ordered the chai latte but it was a little too sweet for me - I'd go with a plain latte next time. I also think I may have ordered the wrong dish because my mom got an omelette with pancakes on the side and enjoyed it. I gambled with the huevos rancheros but they were just ok. I wish the potatoes were more seasoned. You definitely get a huge portion for whatever you order so expect to split with someone or have leftovers. Came here on a rainy Sunday for brunch, and they were still packed, which speaks to just how popular this place is. There was a 45-minute wait for a table for two, but it was absolutely worth it. Tom was amazing to work with. I hosted an after wedding brunch here on Monday morning. Tom was super responsive and helped to create a limited menu so our guests could order quickly and get on the road. The portions are generous and everything was delicious. Hudson Cafe was the perfect place to duck into on what felt like the coldest day in December. We sat right across from the new Hudson building with the Hudson teddy bear in view, which added to the holiday vibes. Our server, Daniel, was excellent. He stayed friendly and flexible even when we changed an item after ordering, and he handled 5+ tables like a pro. We ordered the Baja Cali Omelette with fruit and a side of pancakes, plus the Green Machine Omelette. Both omelettes were about a 3 out of 5. The eggs were overcooked, likely because they cook large portions at once, so they stay on the heat too long. It ends up giving the eggs a slightly cakey texture and some wateriness as the proteins break down. The Green Machine is very healthy, but the broccoli and other veggies inside add extra moisture and end up steaming the chicken that had been nicely seared. The portions are generous; I would just tweak how the omelettes are built. Just a note that the guacamole was a bit too citrusy (maybe citric acid to preserve?) as well. Coffee was fresh ground and genuinely good. The star of the meal was the pancakes. Fluffy, buttery, with a hint of cinnamon (maybe from the syrup), they were an easy 5 out of 5 and the best item of the morning. My wonderful girlfriend Val brought me to Hudson Café for my birthday, and wow--what a great choice! The inside is clean, modern, and super inviting. Now, when I go to brunch, I can never just order one thing, lol. So we went all in: the Bacon Jam Omelette, two orders of the Strawberry Shortcake French Toast, and cheese grits. For drinks, we both tried the Drunkin Teddy. Let's start with that omelette... absolutely incredible. Perfectly cooked, and the flavors of the bacon, cheese, and habanero jam were something completely new for me--unique, delicious, and something I'd happily eat again (and again). Val has been to Hudson Café before and always orders the Mexican Omelette, and even she said this one is her new favorite. That's saying something! The French toast? Oh man. Total treat. I thought it might be too much, but it was actually perfectly balanced--not overly sweet, with just the right mix of fruit and dessert vibes. Very much enjoyed. The cheese grits were solid, though not over the top. I couldn't finish them at the table, but they were good enough to take home for later. As for the Drunkin Teddy, breakfast cocktails aren't usually my first pick, but it sounded interesting, so we gave it a shot. I dropped in for a quick breakfast before a day at a conference. I arrived minutes after opening and there were already a handful of tables occupied. My only option was to sit at the bar. The server was nice enough, but was also trying to enjoy her breakfast between serving. I ordered the traditional with house potatoes, eggs, ham, and pancakes. The pancakes were soft and a little sugary, the eggs were cooked well, and the ham was juicy. I wasn't a fan of the potatoes. They were cooked fine, probably fried, but they were tasteless. I ate my leftovers during my lunch break and most of the food held its texture and taste, except for the potatoes. They were like leftover fries - soggy with no flavor. The moment we walked into the restaurant, we realized how important it is to have a reservation because they were PACKED! So, my main recommendation is to make a reservation, and to make sure you get there on time/slightly early. There isn't a lot of standing room inside the restaurant to wait to be seated, so don't arrive super early. Also, you WON'T be seated until your entire party arrives, so make sure your chronically late friends gets there on time, or you'll be forced to stand aside until they arrive. We were seated inside the restaurant but saw there were some outdoor seating available as well. The inside is lively with conversations and people. I think the restaurant is well lit and creates an energetic and bright environment - just what you need with your morning coffee. We had a wonderful and fun waitress. Reservations are recommended for The Hudson Cafe located in Downtown Detroit near the former location of the famous Hudson store. I'm thankful we had reservations for our party of ten. We were seated right away although the restaurant was bustling for a Friday morning. Even some DPD staff were taking timeout for a good breakfast/lunch. The restaurant is pretty large and accommodating for our large party. They also have patio dining available on the sidewalk of Woodward Avenue for a view of the bustling downtown area. The food was great! No one in our party ordered the same meal. We had tons of food on our table. I had the plain french toast, bacon and a caramel latte. The warm syrup decanter and plenty of butter made it way more than just plain. Tip: Park in the Metroplis garage. You scan for your validation at the hostess station for 3 hours of free parking with the parking garage just south of restaurant and around the corner. Note: If you plan to visit other businesses, you will forfeit your validation after the 3 hours. Although other businesses offer validation, Metropolis garage does not allow stacking of validations. Table service was not available outside but I was able to order food to go and sit on the front patio. Named for the former Detroit based Hudson department store across the street. The original location is in Detroit on Woodward, but there are also locations in Northville and Troy. There is usually a wait to dine in. Outdoor seating is an option during the warmer months. I've had the cinnabunn pancakes, churro French toast, and blueberry burger. The pancakes were huge, and topped with a cream cheese frosting. Upon trying them, my wife said they were the best she's ever had. The French toast is my favorite of the 3 dishes. It came with caramel and Nutella for dipping. Of those, I preferred the caramel. The burger and the waffle fries it was served with were both standard. The blueberry sauce gave the burger a unique flavor that made it worth trying.
