I was traveling through and this store caught my eye. I went inside and was immediately happy with all of the colors and textures and options inside the store. Olivia and Will were amazingly helpful and took the time to show me pattern ideas and color combos. Will took extra time to locate a pattern online for me (after several patterns weren't available) and they even offered to print it out for me at the store. I found 4 skeins of beautiful yarn and a purchasable pattern to commemorate my trip with. I highly recommend this inclusive and pro- diversity store with kind, thoughtful and helpful staff that will make you feel seen and valued as a customer. Lol) I have yet to ever see a shop like this; with the most amazing selection of yarns from around the world. Literally everywhere. It was like I walked into my own personal Heaven!! Plus, they have so many other notions and pretty things! Even custom project kits, books, patterns for both knit and crochet (online too!) And you can purchase everything online as well as participate in group projects. The classes they offer, the groups and projects and get- together, and online groups even - no one can beat them. In all these years, they still send me their weekly newsletter email, so that I can continue to remotely "join in" the fun!! After all these years!! I always look for an LYS (a local yarn shop) when traveling. I'm lucky in this case because Ball & Skein is a lovely 30 minute drive from our home. AND, it is a lovely store. Great variety of yarns. A fair price range, from $12 to $$$. I always look for the Sale Shelf in a yarn shop. Unfortunately, B&S seems to have the least selection there. (did not realize I had never review Ball & Skein!) I am a closet crocheter and adventurous beginner knitter, and the usual welcome I receive in yarn stores is to ignore the first and only focus on the later. This is not true at all with the Cambria crew. Since moving up to Morro Bay in 2018, I have been able to frequent Ball & Skein more regularly. They have an extensive selection of many different yarn brands and project samples, but their real treasure is their offerings of Manos del Uruguay. Everyone who works there is very warm and welcoming. Karen and Emily have become my Saturday warriors for finding yarns for new projects or helping with current ones--I am always picking my own yarn, ignoring the patterns, and generally get myself into stitching troubles. As for the shop, there is a wide selection for notions, buttons, books, and other goodies a yarn-lover might like--they do not fall into the "strictly knitting" category, as they have a wide selection of both knitting needles and crochet hooks, and they have goodies for spinners and weavers too. I have yet to fall down that rabbit hole yet, beyond a few attempts at drop spinning, so I cannot speak to their offerings. They also hold amazing class offerings (learned cables from Chris and Karen) and have hosted awesome events and authors. Definitely a treasure on the central coast! read more

I've been here before, prior to the relocating. Their new location is quite large and well laid out. The owners and employees are kind and helpful without being in your face unless you engage them. I brought my two little ones with me (3.5 and 2) and got zero dirty looks. We were welcomed openly. One of the employees even gave my daughter a snippet of her favorite color of yarn. Very sweet. They offer a quick 20 minute lesson for new knitters which is awesome. I'm a seasoned knitter/crocheter and sometimes feel a sense of snobbery around people new to the yarn arts. Not here at all. Also. Great selection of Manos yarn and even a fair amount of anzula which is a favorite of mine (made in my neck of the woods). Gorgeous displays and a large book selection as well. I've walked by this yarn shop countless times growing up but I've never actually set foot inside till yesterday as I didn't start crocheting till around 4 months ago. The shop looks small from the outside but once you walk in there is SO much yarn!!! Everyone working inside are incredibly nice and helpful. Even my boyfriend had fun picking out some yarn so I can make him a sweater. He chose the softest cotton skein with a tiny bit of nylon with a label that said made in Italy!! They had an array of different cotton, and even a faux mohair looking yarn if you're vegan like me or allergic to animal fibers. I also picked up a couple prym hooks that are so comfy to use. If they don't have something in stock they'll even order it for you. Amazing amazing amazing. I'll be stopping here every time now when I go to the coast!! read more

I didn't know this shop was here but discovered it by surprise while visiting Cambria. I made two trips and both times the folks were amazingly friendly and fun to talk to (the owners were there one day, and then a couple of really nice ladies the second time I went in) and really knew their stuff. WALL OF MANOS. That is all I have to say about that. No, no wait, there's more. It's actually a Tunnel of Manos, and it's ALL the Manos, all the colors and kinds. I about plotzed. Nice selection of other yarns too. They had a lot of Alchemy which was nice to feel up, even if I can't afford it. I wish they had more/different sock yarns, but one can't have everything, and honestly they had a great selection as is. So convenient too, to realize that I needed some #6 dpns and have a place to go get them right there in Cambria, so I didn't need to stop knitting the project I'd brought with me on vacation. Free: Humor, knowledge, friendliness, complimentary stink eye (on request) This was my first visit to the shop. After getting lost and trying to find it ON Bridge Street, I called them at 4:59p. Turns out their entrance is on the main street. The store closed at 5pm but Chris and Oz were more than gracious to stay open. I've worked in retail and know how annoying it came be when a customer shows up one minute before closing. I really tried to avoid being *that* customer but we were leaving Cambria the next day and this was my only opportunity to check-out Ball & Skein. Chris and Oz were so friendly and helpful! We shared a good laugh over the "stink eye" and they gave me one just for the heck. Then on to business - kids get to pick a complimentary friendship bracelet making kit, which made the 5 year old's day. Then she decided she wanted to learn to knit too, so Chris helped us pick out yarns (and sweetly talked the pint-sized one into putting some of the more expensive ones back). I also left with a few skeins. The prices are reasonable too. What a nice Cambria gem! Can't wait for my next return visit. read more

We were staying in Cambria for the night and stumbled across this store.. and we're happy that we did! My mother-in-law has just gotten into crocheting and we wanted to surprise her with a few things... but we didn't know what to start with. Now, neither my wife nor I really have any idea about any of this stuff, just "Oh this looks nice" kind of mentality. The two people working (turned out to be the owners) were busy with other customers, so we just browsed around... probably looking like two deers in headlights. All of a sudden, we hear this voice asking us if we' had touched anything?!? (Huh?) Then we were told to touch everything in the store! (It's their way of encouraging you to learn about the products and feel comfortable while you're there. It really put us at ease.) Anyway, we really had no idea about what to get mom, so my wife thought about getting a 'craft' magazine for Mom. We asked the lady behind the counter if she had any craft magazines. I expected her to point to a rack or something and then 'forget' us (as would happen down here in Orange County), but instead she showed us a couple different magazines and explained the difference between them (patterns, experience levels etc.). This made us feel even more comfortable and we started asking her more questions about tools and other products. Well, to make a long story short, we left after purchasing over $100 in products from them! They were fun, engaging, helpful, concerned, funny and wonderful! They didn't try to upsell us on anything... When we asked about a couple different items in their store, they took the time to explain them but then politely added that those would be better for a more experienced person. We left the store happy with our purchases and confident knowing that we can always return to their store and enjoy the experience! Now, this is a small shop that has lots of wonderful items to look at and to FEEL! (TOUCH EVERYTHING!) It may be a little hard to find, but it is definitely worth looking for! I stop by this place every time I'm in town. This last time, they even let me, hubby and the two best friends in after they'd technically closed. They have an AWESOME stock of all the Manos yarns. And they're displayed so beautifully, with each base and colorway hung on almost floor to ceiling racks. You just let them know which colorway/base you'd like and how many skeins, and they bring them out for you from the back. So fun! I also picked up some 3-sided (triangular) knitting needles that intrigued me. They even had a little ball of yarn next to that display, so I played with them a little bit and they decided to come home with me, too. Love, love, love this place. The owners and employees are friendly, helpful and encouraging from the moment you step in to the moment you leave. They have a beautiful selection of yarn, a very fun and delightful selection of buttons as well as lots of books and magazines to get inspiration. When I mentioned I loved a hat that was on display but was disappointed it was knit and I prefer to crochet - Chris without hesitation said there's a crochet version of the pattern, which she printed and emailed to me! This is an amazing store. What makes it so amazing is not only the creative knitting supples and patterns that they have but Chris and Oz are just as nice and helpful as you can find anywhere. They just put on a wonderfyul class to teach how to create a pattern for a top that really is made to fit you. The class was wonderful and informative. The store has just about every thing you could ever want for knitting but it is not junky. It is very neat and organized and if you can't find what you want Chris probably knows where to get it. What a fantastic little store! We were driving thru Cambria to browse some local Antique shops when I happened to stumble upon this little shop. The young woman on staff was so helpful and knowledgable. She asked my specialty and helped me find some useful patterns and also some specialty yarns. They had so many crochet patterns and books and even more knit patterns and everything was organized so well it was easy to browse. The prices were reasonable as well. I wish this little store was closer but it's definitely somewhere I'lll be stopping during each visit on the central coast! read more

We visited this charming shop in the east end of Cambria twice during our two-night stay at Moonstone Beach. The yarns, books and knitting supplies are well-organized, with sample pieces hanging nearby to show what one might accomplish. Chris greeted us upon entering, and encouraged us to touch all the yarns. We looked without feeling pressure to buy, even when the other woman saleswoman spent time helping us consider various projects. Once my purchase was made, they gave me a couple of tips on winding the yarn into a ball and casting on for 3 needles. It was difficult to leave this friendly place. We happened to be in town the same day a bicycle race was concluding. Main Street was mostly closed and it was beastly hot. Chris let us keep our car in her lot while we had lunch down the street, a much appreciated gesture when neither of us wanted to hunt for another parking spot or walk too far in the 90+ degree heat.
