I first found Ballard Health because a friend highly recommended Tyler Van Hollebeke for a neck injury. That was over two years ago, and I still see Tyler regularly. He is incredibly talented--I'm always amazed that he doesn't charge twice what he does. I've never met anyone more in tune with how the body works or better at finding the exact spots that relieve pain. I'll always be grateful to Tyler for getting me back on my feet after a serious injury. These days, I see him for "tune-ups," but I know my recovery would have been much longer and far more painful if I hadn't found him. He truly is a magician when it comes to healing. read more

I booked a massage with Michelle today, and it was outstanding! I have gotten many massages over the years for sports injuries and to help ease back pain from my scoliosis. She is by far the best. She even encouraged me to find a PT to help me design a workout program to support my scoliosis. Made an appointment on Wednesday and was able to schedule promptly on the day and time I wanted (which was a Friday around midday). They give you a 10% off for your first appointment, and I made mine 90 minutes. They take HSA and FSA, so I was able to use that to pay for the deposit and also use it pay after the visit itself. My masseuse was Courtney. I was a teensy bit late (well technically, right on time, but you're supposed to come early to do paperwork on your first visit), but Courtney was ready to take me back immediately, as soon as I finished my papers. She confirmed what I wanted, and it was an extremely consensual massage, which I appreciated. I often tell massage therapists that I don't want my legs worked on and they insist or push, but Courtney did not. She did some excellent work on my back and shoulders and arms, and explained what she was doing and why. I didn't feel like there was over- or under-communication. It was a very comfortable experience and I was already thinking about how I wanted to return to see her again before my massage was over. I left feeling refreshed. I also appreciated that my 90 minute massage truly was 90 minute and not less. The parking lot is small, but seems to be adequately sized for the business. I had a terrible car accident where a driver T-Boned a vehicle I was a passenger in from a side street at a very fast speed. I still cannot move my neck and the lower the back pain is unbearable, but this practice has provided me a few hours of relief. They also offered to direct bill the reckless driver's insurance directly, and they are available when I need relief. I highly recommend all the therapists. Saw Barbara and was lucky enough to get an appt within 2 days. Barbara has gifted hands and a strong but sensitive touch. She worked out the kinks and pain patterns from a recent accident that i've been struggling with and in that tough healing phase where sessions make me feel great, but the ouchies come back after a spell. I called BHC to see if they accepted my insurance and they said they didn't have anyone at that time. A couple weeks later, they called back and said they had a therapist that would work with my insurance. I made an appointment. The massage itself was disappointing. They charge full price upfront and then tell you that they'll provide a credit once the insurance money comes back to them. Despite telling me they'd reach out to me about how much the credit was, no one called. I called them multiple times asking them to check on it and they assured me they would. Two months later, Aaron the owner emailed me and told me that they don't take my insurance at all. He was unwilling to reimburse me for any portion despite their error. He didn't even offer an apology for their mistake. Mistakes happen, but at least have the courtesy to own up to it and apologize. read more

Wow!!! I went here towards the end of a painful pregnancy. Kylie was amazing and made those last few months bearable. She was so friendly and helped me find a way to get comfortable and fit on the table ;) I would recommend her to anyone pregnant or not! Fast forward a few months and I am back. Really poor communication. I made an initial appointment with them and it should be scheduled at a noon while they documented my number wrong so they tried different phone number combination and reached out to me and said my appointment was at the early morning. We had no choice but tp reschedule. And I scheduled my second visit with the front desk and asked specially would I receive a reminder and got a confirmation. While I waited the reminder and finally lost my patience. I called them again and got the answer your appointment was two days ago so we'd charge your for missing an appointment. I mean I am living really close to the clinic, it only takes 5 minutes to get there. I never received any kinds of email, text reminder from them. And if I weren't there around the time, would you just give me a call so I could be there in 5 minutes. This gonna avoid me paying the missing appointment charge and would charge my insurance instead. I am really disappointment about the communication. Because there's no way for me to re-check the appointment. What if the the date were documented wrong at two sides? So it's only the customer's responsibility to recheck to make sure the date is setting correct at both side? This doesn't make sense for me. read more

I have been a customer at BHC since it was owned by the current owner's father. The waiting room used to be full of grayhaired elderly and now it is a little younger set as Ballard changes and grows. They have a clean operation with many different types of massage available and an optional hot tub add-on with most appointments. They are busy so best to book ahead. They have free on-site parking and a friendly team of therapists who get along. They keep on time and professional. Their therapists are happy because the owner treats them right. Many people like me and the hubster have been clients for decades, you may see the same clients each visit. I've had nothing but positive experiences at the Ballard Health Center. A very professional establishment that is packed with patients from open to close for good reason, they're great at what they do. A little background on myself: 6 foot 235 lb. power lifter who could benchpress your Prius and backsquat 4 average sized hipsters from Ballard ave. I've suffered from lower back problems for years. Needed to find a practitioner who was able to identify problem areas and work his magic. Done. I've been scheduling appointments with Aaron for about 3 years, once a month like clockwork. They stay true to their motto, 'Limp in, Leap out.' After a month of beating my body mercilessly at the gym and outdoors - I'm in need for a deep massage and have left satisfied every time. Really like the hot tub they have and soak in it for about 10 minutes beforehand. Aaron's professional, approachable and easy to talk to. I highly recommend. read more

This place has many different therapists you can see and some are great and some are just okay. I think you have to try a few before you find the right one for you. Upon reading the reviews here, I had to chuckle. Hard to believe that one of my worst massage experiences was at this very same establishment. On my first visit, I had arrived 15 minutes early, so I was offered to sit in the whirlpool. I agreed... plus, I wouldn't mind the soak (even though I showered and scrubbed at home right before my arrival), and it was free with the massage. The whirlpool is in a stark room that echos, and at first I felt awkward about getting completely naked in this open, bright room (not soothing at all), but after realizing the door was locked and I was completely alone, I felt a little more comfortable. Encountered in whirlpool: floating pubic hair. bubbly spittle looking stuff floating on top. This is at about 4pm. I did not partake in the whirlpool on my second visit here. The massages themselves were not very relaxing. My LMP was Eden, who has been mentioned here. She seemed quite distracted, as the massage itself felt weak, sloppy, and asymmetrical. When laying on my stomach, and later on my back: the things she did on my right side, she did not do on the left side (it is as if her mind must have been somewhere else, as she did not feel "present"). And none of the strokes ever felt complete, like each muscle group was only half-addressed. The room temperature was not warm enough, and as I was laying there with my entire back (or whatever body part she was working on) exposed, I was feeling very cold... and with the combination of massage, it was like feeling cold to the bone. (I mentioned this to her as I was face-up, she put a small hot pillow/pack under my neck, which actually was ouch-scorching too hot, and did not help, as it was my body that was cold, not the crook of my neck), and thus the muscles that were supposed to be relaxing would remain tense. I learned later that evening and the following day that the back pain and tension that I initially went there for actually got WORSE. I was greatly disappointed. I felt really ripped off, and even strangely violated... to pay $75 for a one hour massage, only to come out stiff and in greater pain than before. The relationship between practitioner and client is one of great trust. And I tried to give her a chance and be positive. Her hands/forearms/elbows would pass near a super-tight spot, but never quite address it. It was like having an itch that someone is so very close to scratching right on it, but never does. I gave some feedback, but didn't want to over-do it and be the customer who would tell the practitioner how to do their job. It was like... every moment of the massage you think it will get better, and it never does... I guess it is my fault for optimistically trying to give this place (or was it just the off days for this practitioner?) its chances. Not all is lost: The receptionist was nice. Water and tea is provided. Waiting room is cozy. Parking was plentiful and easy. Location is convenient. read more

Sweet, sweet relief can be found at Ballard Health & Wellness. A good massage for me is moderate pressure, and enjoyable. I went ahead and booked with Eden. I walked in, and was hit with the aroma of vanilla candles. Yum. The paperwork was minimal. AND BTW massage is covered by my insurance. Yay. With every session, you are encouraged to go and use the hot tub for 10-15 minutes, throw on a robe, and scurry back to your massage room. I've had massages before, the last being at Spa Seattle on 2nd Ave. That place felt almost clinical. Here, it was warm, and inviting, and comfortable. Eden started and she immediately conformed to my own personal pain threshold. She even whipped out the hot stones. *uuugghhhhh* How have I NEVER had hot stones before!?! It is completely wrong for any massage therapist to NOT offer you hot stones. After a fully enjoyable hour of rubbing down, I came out feeling high and happy as a calm clam. GO. I love the massage. Like ice cream with sprinkles...just plain good stuff. And, like ice cream there are relative scales of "good". There is Hagan Dazs and then there is large bucket of ice cream that comes in one of three colors (hard to use the word flavor as a description) and is generally located on the bottom and in the back of the freezer and costs the same as the smallest bit of Hagen Dazs available. BHC is like the Dryer's double churn vanilla. Good, very yummy, and pretty much what you'll buy, especially on sale. I have been there a few times and generally require DEEP TISSUE work. This comes better to some massage therapist than others. BHC does a great job of being open, available, and comfortable. My only complaint is that from time to time, there is much noise in the outside environment and that can tend to remove one from a state of bliss. But in all fairness, what can they do about the outside? Still, BHC does fine work, and is a wonderful institution to support. The three therapists I have worked with have all been good. One was great the other two - B+ for a grade. The best part - the sprinkles on top - the whirlpool time you get with every massage you book. Uh- hello people!!! This rocks! So, I'm getting a massage and that means that either 1) I'm tense and 2)I'm tense and sore. So the whirlpool before a massage - utter heaven. Who was the smartie pants to offer this up to patients of BHC? Kudos to you! Walking into a massage, clean, warm, and relaxed makes the whole experience that much more like ice cream. Perfect! If you want to work on your body, relax and get healed, then this is the right place. They do a great job in working with your insurance and never pressure or push any service and products on you. The parking and booking is very easy. The business is family owned and I'm so happy to support them and this local business. Who does not need a massage after surviving 2020 and 2021? If I could financially do it, I go every day and simply just pitch a tent in their parking lot. I can't say I've been to lots of places in Seattle for massage, but I have been to several in my previous homes of Chicago and Cincinnati. BHC has everthing I would hope for - it's clean, quiet, peaceful, they accept insurance (!!!), their prices are more than reasonable and their therapists are all great. The owner is clearly very picky about who he hires. So far I've only had massages but I'm planning on getting some acupuncture soon too. Jasmine at BHC is by far the best massage therapist I've ever worked with. She listens to your needs and addresses them specifically, while also identifying other problem areas you aren't even aware are causing the pain you're experiencing. Not only do I get a great massage every time, but she has also educated me on what I can do to prevent the pain in the first place - how to sit at my desk, stretches I need to do on a daily basis, etc. Plus, she's fun to chat with! But if I'm having a day where I want peace, she gets that without me having to say anything and I can have a quiet massage. And hot stones followed by ice packs every time? At no extra charge? I mean come on. This place is the best - if you're looking for a fancy spa, this isn't it. I have been seeing Anders for massages a couple times now, and he is a great listener as you arrive and talk through where you need help. I recently had a bad knee injury, and he was very flexible with adopting a massage to fit my needs. I have been getting massages for years now, and I have encountered many massage therapist who have given me amazing massages to where I felt relaxed, energized and mentally aware but no one like Jasmine Zimmer @ Ballard Health Center. I originally came to Jasmine with soreness in my lower back and bottom from falling down my stairs, which resulted in me not being able to sit down. In two treatments Jasmine has aided in given me my mobility back,, providing me with less muscle soreness/tightness and she is continually providing me with a lot of knowledge about the muscles, natural cures for muscle aches/pains, healthy living etc. She is great at what she does and I will continue to see her for treatment of muscle aches, circulation and mental relaxation. Michelle Wert is a miracle worker. I was always hesitant to try massage, but when I was diagnosed with a serious health issue a few years ago I decided to improve my self care. I am so happy I found Michelle! I was instantly at ease in her presence, which is so important to me. The things I know about massage: absolutely nothing. In fact I've always had a kind of weird aversion to people grabbing up on me so massage anything always sounded kind of creepy to me. I felt that way until messing up something in my neck and after convincing my doctor (threatening to find another doctor, same thing!) to give me a referral away I went to the Ballard Health Center! The place is a little weird when you go in. I wasn't sure if I was at someone's house or a clinic but it was all part of the "experience" so I went with it. Christine Castillo was my masseuse, or visitor of pain and suffering upon knots in my neck and back. I didn't realize there is a BIG difference between massage and massage therapy. Christine was awesome and was straight up about everything with me. Usually when people use their elbows like that it means I've been in a street fight! Afterwards I walked out of there and could turn my head to the left without any pain, then as I turned it right I saw that delicious KFC and thought "Fried chicken!?!?" and I remembered Christine telling me "What's the point of working out so hard if your going to eat horribly?" So I went and drank German beer instead. My hypocrisy only goes so far.... read more

I was really excited to try this place out as a friend recommended it to me. However, I was very disappointed. One good thing, they got me an appointment next day which was great, but maybe my therapist had openings because of how bad she was? To start, the place is very dingy and does not feel relaxing to enter. Then, I had a prenatal medical massage and the massage was so light that it did nothing for my pregnancy aches and pains. She told me she would check in on pressure, but then she NEVER asked during the massage. I wanted a medical prenatal massage, not a relaxation light fluffy massage. Also, it was soooooo hot in there, the window was open, but I was still sweating and couldn't relax due to sweating. I was actually frustrated that I wasted an hour of my busy schedule to go into this place. The final kicker was, I went to pay and they told me I owed double what I anticipated. (I had previously called my insurance to check on my benefits). They wouldn't listen to me and told me I had to pay the amount they said. So, I paid the amount. Then, I got my explanation of benefits in the mail and sure enough, they charged me double what I should have paid. I get that insurance can be tricky and with so many plans it is hard to tell. However, they didn't bother calling to tell me or refund me. I had to call them to get my refund. Upon calling, the receptionist was nice and stated yes it looked like I was owed a refund and she quickly put it back on my credit card. However, due to the vibe in the place, the staff not doing an actual prenatal medical massage or checking in with me, the uncomfortable sweaty environment, and the overcharge; I will not be coming back and will be looking for a new place to go. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try them as maybe in the winter months and with a different receptionist (to bill you) and different therapist, you could have a good experience. I just didn't have a good experience from start to finish. I don't want to put my massage therapist name on blast, but I do feel she should be talked to about checking in with clients during the massage. I've been coming here for about 3 years off and on. I initially saw Howard and LOVED him but he has since moved to another office that does not take insurance. As of recently, I have been seeing Nichole. I have been extremely happy with her. She is on time, efficient, fun to talk to and gives fantastic massages. Front office staff was inconsistent for awhile but seems to have settled and now I feel confident in their abilities. They bill my insurance with no problem. I took off one star as there is no soundproofing whatsoever. Its a funky old house that has been modified, but you can hear everything going on during your massage so it's not very relaxing if you've got a chatty Kathy in the room next to you. read more

I should start by saying that I am not normally a fan of massage. However, I hurt my neck and was in pain and this place was close to my house so I decided to give it a shot. I had had some massages before and was generally unsatisfied by the experience but my therapist at the Ballard Health Center was very good. I met with Christine Castillo and she worked on my neck and upper back for an hour and I was pretty surprised by how much pain relief I got out of the session. The best part was that I felt good for days afterwards. Christine was equally, if not more, effective in my followup visits and I'm happy to report that my neck feels much better after seeing her. The facility is nice and there's ample parking. I have had an easy time with scheduling and whatnot but the real good part was the massage and that's why this is a 5 star review. read more

So much so that she has scheduled another pregnancy massage the following week, in the final days of her pregnancy! Definitely a fan. If this were a review solely for Greg at BHC, it would easily be five stars. I keep injuring my back/neck in various creative ways, and he is kind of amazing. Definitely not your typical swedish-relaxation-happy-massage-bubble feeling afterward, but most assuredly a talented therapist who works magic on getting your body back to pain-free functioning. I have also had one relaxation-type massage from a different person at BHC and it was more like 1 star. Won't try her again. But everyone has different styles they prefer - and she has been mentioned in both prior 1 star & 5 star reviews. I guess some people love her. Bonus: BHC bills my insurance directly. I've been going to BHC for the past 3 months to get pregnancy massage (thank you Regence!) and cannot recommend my therapists enough! Morgan and Laura are both amazing, professional, caring and get all the tense spots expertly! They ask questions and actually listen, and address my ever-changing needs so that i can just relax and de-tensify, instead of needing to provide feedback throughout. I really like this place. I've had acupuncture with Michelle and massage with Ariana. Both are really great. I was skeptical about acupuncture, but I think it actually helps me with chronic knee pain. Michelle is a true pro, and always asks how I'm feeling and tailors my treatment accordingly. Ariana is equally great. She applies just the right amount of pressure for me, and has really helped me with chronically tight areas. in my back and shoulders. The Center itself is probably in the mid range in terms of space and decor, not swanky but not bare bones. I'm fine with that given the quality of the service and the friendly front desk staff, but this isn't the kind of place where I'd bring my friends for a luxe spa day. read more

So I've been thinking about this review long and hard... almost as long as my hour massage here. So I think this will be what you call a "Useful" review... if you're a germaphobe like me, you'll appreciate it. So I come in and they ask if I want to sit in the whirlpool, as it's included in your massage (but does not take away from the full hour of pleasure afterward). It's one that you get in by yourself, which I appreciate since I was naked as a jaybird. A few things I thought were concerning with the whirlpool: 1. The jets are not that powerful. For trying to work out the knots in my upper back, these just were not cutting it. 2. I was luckily the first client of the day, which means that the chlorine has killed every living thing in there, and the filter has filtered who-knows-what out of the whirlpool. If I wasn't? Eew. If there was a naked person in there 30 minutes before me, I think it would have been a resounding "Hell no," because I am super germaphobe (note to self: change nickname to germaphobe sometime). 3. I had to walk in my bare feet across the tile... no athlete's foot yet. Maybe they should think about offering the flip-flops you get when getting a pedicure. They seem cheap enough to get them in bulk, and I'd get the pleasure of knowing I don't have to worry about this kind of thing. 4. The handrails have rust running down the side of the wall. Yuck. 5. How about some soothing music? I'm tryin to relax! It was luckily in an interior room - read, no windows - so privacy was totally there (believe me, I was looking for it). After 15 minutes, they flashed the lights letting me know it's time (thanks for not barging in). I took a quick rinse in the shower also in the whirlpool room to get the chlorine smell off me. The massage? I thought it was pretty good. I let her know of a sensitive area to avoid - no dirty thoughts now - and she gave good pressure. I wasn't a big fan of the smell of the lotion she used. Eden, I think her name was. For what it was, it was a decent massage. If I were to go again, I'd skip the whirlpool because 15 minutes of worrying about what diseases I'm getting vs trying to get the jets to work out the knots was not worth it.
