One of my quarantine home improvement projects has been to try to make a dent in my ever-growing pile of artwork labeled "to be framed." I'm an avid collector of free posters at art museums, scraps of drawings left behind by long gone relatives, old but beautiful calendars too pretty to recycle, and memorabilia ranging from concert tickets to cocktail napkins. You can imagine how large my collection had become. Having done my fair share of disastrous cheapo framing jobs (Michael's, Aaron Brothers, random frames ordered off Amazon, just to name a few), I have truly scraped the bottom of the framing barrel. I decided to take the French approach to shopping: spend more but buy less. I selected four of my most worthy items and made a framing appointment at Ballard's, spurred on in part by a thoughtful gift certificate left over from Christmas. Framing artwork is as much of an art as creating the art itself. It's like casting movies; finding just the right actor to inhabit a role involves intuition, training and a sense of chemistry that simply cannot be taught. So it's fitting that Jonathan Gold himself was kind enough to recommend Ballard's to me many years ago. (I cannot help but wonder what dear Jonathan, may he RIP, would make of the times we're in. I feel cheated out of his take on Los Angeles restaurants in time of pandemic, civil unrest, and the antics of that person occupying the office of president. But I digress.) I should have written this review years ago for a beautiful concert poster job from Ballard's, but better late than never. My mission for Ballard's, which they chose to accept, was to frame four prints left to me by my grandfather. As always, their suggestions for frames were spot on. And yet I also felt completely listened to as I expressed my somewhat vague ideas about what I wanted. It takes a special touch to interpret "something that will go in my kitchen" into a truly creative yellow/blue combo that works perfectly with the print itself. It's genius, framing genius. And when I picked up my pictures this afternoon, I was blown away. Absolutely stunning. Quarantine accommodations are in full force at Ballard's. Plexiglass is in place and masks are required. Grossly incompetent, poor customer service, very overpriced. They introduced other charges after the fact and I ended up with an extremely high bill from what I was originally quoted. Furthermore, I was not impressed by the final work. I have had a lot of experience getting pieces framed both in NYC and Los Angeles. I took a chance on Ballard's because they are in my community but I was sadly mistaken at their incompetence. I would not recommend that anyone who is serious about trying to get their artwork framed give them business. read more

About a year ago, my wife and I purchased a gargantuan charcoal drawing (7 feet long, no joke) and toted it around to several stores to price things out and discover our framing options. If we'd had any clue what we were doing, we probably wouldn't have splurged on such a massive piece of unframed art but we didn't, so we did. Few of the stores we visited were able to accommodate art of that scale, or feel confident that they could frame it without the frame falling apart or breaking under stress. If they were willing to frame it, they gave us minimal options in the materials, and said it would have to be a very thick frame, which was not our desired aesthetic. Ballard's was different. The woman who helped us (I'm kicking myself that I can't remember her name) studied the art considerately, discussed the mechanics of framing it with her colleague, and explained the hidden structure that they would need to build to support the frame. She discussed the wood and finish choices, and because we wanted to display the distressed edge of the paper, she presented several backing options, including the matte black silk we ultimately chose. The frame job took about six weeks and was obviously very expensive (almost 3x another quote). But we understood why. Ballard's delivered on every front, from service to available materials to quality of the finished product. "Woman Reading" took a U-Haul to get home and barely fits on our wall at the moment, but this piece will live with us forever. Ballard's has made customers for life. read more

I went to BALLARD'S ARTWORK FRAMING to get an art project I did in college (decades ago) framed. It was an odd shaped because the concept was to do a "photo series," so taking inspiration from Hockney, I did a picture collage of the back of Barbra Streisand's album jacket Classical Barbra. Using a macro lens, I had to reassemble the photos back into a cohesive image which is why the image wasn't centered. Based on the reviews here and also being close in location I chose BALLARD'S. Aaron was there when I brought it in and he was very helpful with suggestions and friendly. I had the extra board on both sides cut so that the image was better centered and Aaron had them cleanup the dust and markings that were left on the board (I had it stored in a hallway in a bunch of plastic bags all those years) and the finished product came out better than I had anticipated. It took about 3-weeks, give or take, and you get to choose the frame, Glass, etc., but don't worry if you have no idea because he'll walk you through it. Likewise, if you have a specific idea of how you want something framed I'm sure Aaron & Co. can do it. Also, if you have budget constraints tell them so they can work within your price range. The place is tiny so you can easily miss it and there's street parking in front (metered), but there's also parking lots in the back. I'll definitely be back for other framing needs. read more

Made an appointment a week in advance and had a great session with a very helpful employee who took me through the whole process, safely distanced and masked, with no other customers present in the store for covid safety. They showed me several different frame and matte samples to figure out what worked best with the stuff I needed framed, and they didn't get impatient when I was fussy and particular, and asked for other options. They paired this super precious collage print I had ordered online from my favorite artist with a very sleek and simple frame that drew attention to and centered the piece perfectly. They also found a wonderful, retro looking walnut (?) frame for these very old photos of my parents that were taken in the 70's. The final product looks like something you would find in your grandparents' house. Now I have a glorious piece of family history that can remain preserved long after they and I are gone. Altogether, it was a little on the pricey side, but they took such good care of these precious items, gave me a result that was even better than I expected, and I could not be more satisfied! The order took several weeks to finish, since they were pretty busy and backed up with orders due to the pandemic and supply delays, but it was still ready within the time frame they promised and it was 100% worth the wait AND the cost. They offer different options for the type of glass too--you can even spring for museum-grade glass that doesn't glare at all!--I went with the cheaper glass option and it still looks incredible. I will definitely be returning in the future knowing that I can trust them with invaluable pieces of artwork, and I recommend you do the same. read more

There are two realities in life: 1) You get what you pay for; and 2) Never trust 5- or 1-star Yelp reviews. This is going to prove one and invalidate the other. Getting stuff framed is expensive. Ballards is super-expensive. But the quality of the work is absolutely worth the price tag. The staff treats framing like an art-form in and of itself. They take whatever you just wanted to hang on the wall and elevate it to something truly incredible. I brought in a poster from a Pearl Jam show at Wrigley Field. They found a frame where the wood grain resembles that of a baseball bat. They floated the item so it looks like it belongs in a museum. They repaired a tear in the poster so well that I need a jeweler's loop to find right now! The bottom line is that, indeed, you get what you pay for. Regardless of where you go to get stuff framed, it's going to be pricey. The only difference between stores is the quality of the work. Ballards will blow you away with theirs. read more

I've had a few prints and artwork pieces sitting on my shelf for years, that I've meant to get framed. It isn't laziness - it's the fact that many shops that do artwork framing don't work with my banker's hours work schedule. Half of them aren't even open on the weekends, at all. Ballard's is right down the street from where I live now, and I was stoked to see that they, A., stay open till past 5:00 or 6:00pm, and B., are open on Saturdays. So, off I went. They had nice selections of frames and they helped me pick out a perfect one for my Natalia Fabia print. The owner of the store is very pleasant, friendly, and low-key. Two weeks or so later, I came to pick up my artwork. It looks excellent! When I picked it up, they explained how they charge for their services - how the owner used to work for Aaron Brothers, and rather than relying on coupons to keep their prices reasonable, they've set up a more efficient system. I was quite happy with their work and I will definitely return, the next time I want to get artwork framed! read more

Wonderful establishment. The customer service was at an all time high. It is a smaller establishment so one-on-one time with the frame crafters is not too much to ask for. They make sure to ask you all of the right questions to help make your time framing creative and successful. Depending on what you are looking for determines the price of course, but overall, they have decent pricing. I am not an consistent framer (this is actually my first time) but I did came here to get the estimates on the making of a shadow box, and while I didn't purchase the shadow box from here, after all of my research, they have pretty competitive prices. You get what you pay for and I would recommend paying whatever the price is for great custom framing. I'm very disappointed that I'm compelled to write a less than steller review. Aaron is a very nice man and produces good work. I was hoping and expecting to give this review a full five stars. However, the timeline and Aaron's promises prohibit that. We took our canvas to Aaron and were given a pickup date. On that date, a full month later, my wife drove to the store and discovered the job had yet to be started. The clerk told my wife they might have it done in a few hours! What?! They couldn't find a couple of hours over the course of an entire month? The lady said they would call when it was completed. The call came a full day later. Geez! Very disappointed. read more

If you want to get something special framed Aaron is the man to go to. I had some really sentimental pieces that I wanted framed in equally as special of a way. One being an xray of my cat. I always saw it between 2 panes of glass to put up in front of a window, like a stained glass window. Aaron created this for me but created a frame in which I could put lights hidden behind the xray image and hang to get the same, backlit effect without destroying the image with sunlight. His prices are affordable for the handcrafted love he puts into everything he does. I also love that his shop features handicrafts that are sold to benefit certain causes. I love Ballards! I went in with a damaged tintype which Aaron Ballard gingerly repaired! He selected a matte and frame he thought would look great with it, but when I wanted to take it another direction, he was flexible and had more great ideas that suited me. If I was left to pick out everything on my own without his suggestions, it wouldn't have turned out nearly as cool looking and professional as it did. The price was way less than I thought it would be. Although it is boutique, he managed to offer the sort of price you'd get at Michaels or Joanne, but with the advantage of an inspired setting and the good feeling that comes with supporting a local business and tradesman. His shop is shared with a non-profit that sells adorable things made by women in third world countries, I think. It's called Raven + Lily. It's a great place to get a baby gift or a woman gift!
