It gives a very safe feeling when you are living in the area to know that it is so close when needed. This is also designated as a safe zone so that if a child or even anyone should need help they can feel safe going there and asking for help. There were threw employees working this blood donation event. It looks like there was a rush towards the end of the drive. They had Red Cross swag, T-shirt and snacks and drinks. We were set up in the conference room. Process was pretty easy, and quick.

Fire Departments are often taken for granted. Of course they respond rapidly to reports of fires,…read moresmoke investigations, injury car accidents or ones with entrapments. Fire Departments are often the first on the scene of an emergency call for medical assistance. I'm sure they handle themselves professionally but rarely get thanked for the service they provide. I want to change that by acknowledging the wonderful service that Shelby County Fire Department provided when I called for assistance. Let me tell you what happened. It was a Sunday mid-afternoon when my husband and I were going to leave the house and run some errands. When we exited our back door we were greeted with an overwhelming smell of gasoline. We walked out to our cars that were parked on the driveway pad to discover our Buick station wagon leaking gas. This same car six weeks earlier had a gas leak in the same region that went drip, pause, drip, pause, drip.... This time there was no pause. The gas tank had just been filled with 18 gallons and in the area of the fuel line near the rear wheel and passenger door there was a steady drip, drip, drip. My husbands first reaction was to hose down the driveway. I was uncomfortable with that solution and immediately called our daughter who is a volunteer fire fighter in North Carolina. She advised me to call the fire department non-emergency number and ask them to bring out some "quick absorb". I immediately followed her instructions. Unfortunately, on Sunday there is no answer to the business line but there is a detailed message with office hours and a messaging system. So instead I called 9-1-1 and talked to a very capable male dispatcher. I explained what was happening and asked if the fire department could come on a non-emergency basis to assist us with putting down some quick absorb. He advised me they would be on the way. Within five minutes an Engine arrived and the fire fighters went right to work. Two of them scooted under the car to examine what was happening. They put down an absorbing material, mixed up a putty to try and stop the leak. Then they came up with the creative solution of jacking up the car on the drivers side to tilt the gas away from the leaking line. All this service was way beyond my wildest dreams of how they might help. We left the car tilted on jacks until the following morning when it was going to be towed to the dealership for repairs. They serve food, treats, and drinks.. all free. There's a variety of games and activities for the kids to participate in while dressed up in their spookiest costumes.
