Henry County is located in north-central Kentucky in the outer Bluegrass Region. Eminence is the largest city in the county with an estimated population of 2,231. Eminence is located 69 miles northwest of Lexington; 38 miles northeast of Louisville; and 65 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio. Henry County was carved out of a population of Shelby County in 1798. The county was named for Patrick Henry, famous for his "give me liberty or give me death" speech. The city of Eminence was not formally surveyed until April 1854 when a local man named Gideon King gave the right of way through his land for the railroad. The plat was laid 330 feet to the inch and the locations of the New Castle Turnpike, I. C. & I. Railroad, the Christian Church lot; D. Thomson's lot and G. Kings residence are marked. When railroads were obtaining their right of ways, it was Gideon King who persuaded the powers that be to run their road over his land. He gave them land, not only in track and station, but also for the freight house and cattle pens. So the road was "detoured" to pass through Gideon King's Farm. The railroad (completed in 1849) crossing the New Castle-Shelbyville Turnpike on its way from Louisville to Frankfort was the catalyst for the growth of Eminence. Eminence, which means "high place", is the highest point along the railroad between Louisville and Lexington and lies 900 feet above the sea level. Bringing the train through Eminence is credited with increasing the population of the city, making it larger than the county seat. At one time, the county boasted seven railroad depots. The Eminence passenger depot is still a focal point of the downtown property and only one of two remaining in the County.

They have picked other things up my husband has called about .. i have to say they are better then the county forsure . they definitely do there part around town cleaning up . i live right in the middle and im actually city and most of my road is county and they do nothing for this road ..The town takes care of there part . although i must say on the corner of applegate down by the car lot its looking pretty bad with all kinds of debree cigarette butts all in the flower beds , it's not looking the best right now and copp lane is way over due for new pavement road .. So many holes and will tear your car up .. but we could use some tlc over here on lewis and clark but other then that they are always out working .. thank you .and to public works ..

This is a beautiful state of the art station that has not been open very long but, is a very…read morewelcome addition to the area. It gives a very safe feeling when you are living in the area to know that it is so close when needed. This is also designated as a safe zone so that if a child or even anyone should need help they can feel safe going there and asking for help. I would suggest going by there and seeing it in person and saying hello to the men who work there.

We loved our visit to the Old State Capital of Kentucky. The Greek Revival building is stately with…read morea colonial touch. The building served as the State Capitol from 1830-1910 and was the third building to hold the honor. (The prior two buildings were destroyed by fire.) This building, designed by Gideon Shryock, was mostly built using Kentucky limestone from nearby Kentucky river. The facade is unusual in that there are no windows at the front entrance, only a huge door. The front is adorned with massive columns. We entered on the side. $8 tickets gave us access to the building plus two other museums. A walking tour with paper guide is available if you want to wander at your own pace. A guided tour is available in the afternoons. The beautiful central spiral limestone staircase and ornate dome are the focal points of the building. On the main floor, is a renovated version of the State Library, completed with period books and furnishings of the 1850's. A meeting room on the ground floor, tells the governing history of Kentucky in photos. The main floor also housed the courts, but those rooms are currently closed to the public. Upstairs are two large room that housed the legislative branches of the state government. The rooms are in the process of renovation and hold some of the original furnishings. Outside on the Square, is a statue of William Goebel, the only Governor in the U.S. to be assassinated while in office. Goebel was shot outside the courthouse in 1900. Ramps and elevators are available inside, as well as restrooms. We found free street parking about a block away. I recommend a visit.

This National Historic Landmark served as Kentucky's Capitol from 1830 to 1910. This Greek Revival…read morestyle building features a unique self-supporting staircase and was the only pro-Union State Capitol occupied briefly by the Confederate Army during the Civil War. We only took photos of the exterior of the building as we had time constraints. It's a beautiful building on nicely landscaped lawns. The neighborhood is also interesting with museums and shops. Note, however, that many attractions and shops are closed on Mondays.

Shall we get out and see some culture…read more This overlook sits off the waterline on the Indiana side of the Ohio River. It's under and around the wharf. It has so much to offer. During the summer time they have free concerts on a river boat barge with plenty of places to enjoy the music from. Now the potty situation is a portable one. After the June 19th, 2026 celebrations, which were uneventful. They were quiet too, the crowds did not leave any liter or bottles. Coming from a party town of Las Vegas it was great. No pee or vomit smells. The overlook is just a nice place to hang out and enjoy the Ohio River no matter what sort of a day it is. Wait five minutes the weather will change? The bridge at night lights up too with all sorts of LEDS! On the green is a river boat that they have concerts on every once in a while. It's the July 4, 2026 celebration and they had a free concert . It's was a great tribute band to Fleetwood Mac. Then the fireworks show exploded over our heads as the band rang in 250 years. Hold your hands and let the roar of the music and fireworks make your sanity challenged .

This Overlook in Jeffersonville is a hidden gem that offers panoramic views of the Ohio River and…read moredowntown Louisville. I had the overlook to myself during my visit to enjoy the river on a quiet Monday morning. I saw a lovely "steam" boat meandering down the river. The former Big Four Railway Bridge crossing the Ohio River is prominent to the west. The portico is upscale with benches and a picnic table to sit and enjoy the scenery. Roses and lilies were blooming around the pristinely manicured overlook. I thought of the history that has travelled this site on the river. Centuries of Indigenous people, Lewis & Clark, Lafayette and early settlers all traveled past this site. West of the overlook is a lovely grass amphitheater that will come alive in the summer. East of the overlook are empty boat slips. I found free street parking directly across from the overlook. I did not see public restrooms nearby. Access is wheel chair and stroller friendly. The Overlook is a must visit if you are in Jeffersonville.

Kentucky Governor William Goebel is the only Governor to be assassinated while in office in the…read moreU.S. He was shot in front of the Old State Capitol building in Frankfort on January 30, 1900, shortly after a hottly contested election. He died four days later at the age of 44. This bronze statue commemorates his life. The works was completed by the famous American artist, Charles Henry Niehavs. The stone base of the sculpture lists Goebel's political service and accomplishments. He served as a State Senator for 14 years and was an advocate for the common people. His final words are engraved on the base. "Tell my friends to be brave and fearless and loyal to the great common people. There is nearby free street parking.

We were pleased that all of the 11,300 graves were able to be sponsored and honored again this year. The snowfall from 2 days prior had melted somewhat and there was fairly easy accessibility via pathways to various sections. The roadways are well maintained and large trees line the road and are scattered throughout the cemetery. The rock wall surrounding the perimeter is lovely, as well as the large covered parade stand and stage in a central location for presentations. We plan to return annually for this program as well as for the cleanup always held in January.

As a former history major, Zachary Taylor has always been an interesting president to learn about and I wrote a lot of papers about him in college. The cemetery was covered in a light blanket of snow and was well kept and cleaned. The graves of fallen soldiers were well persevered and cleaned. I enjoyed looking at Zachary Taylor's mausoleum and the statue next to it. We also got to look at his former resting place, which is just a few feet from his permanent resting place.
