I was running errands in Middletown recently and realized that I needed to drop something off at the post office. I pulled out my phone to search for the closest one and saw that it was in nearby Anchorage, and just a few minutes' drive. I set my map to go there and was on my way. As I approached, the hustle and bustle of Shelbyville Rd gave way to the bucolic peace of Anchorage. I followed gently winding roads veiled with leafy trees until I reached the quaint Post Office. Inside it was quiet, and a friendly (!) employee immediately helped me get my item mailed. No waiting required, as I was the only person in the post office that day. We chatted pleasantly while she weighed and printed my postage, and I was quickly in my way. A little gem of a find, this USPS location is sure to put a smile on your face as well!

A little history about Oldham County Post offices: The first two post offices in Oldham County were Westport, on the Ohio River, and Floydsburg, near Crestwood. Floydsburg, one mile outside of Crestwood, was located along a major stagecoach route between Louisville and New Castle, which went on to Frankfort. It collected mail for the central part of the county. This was a stage coach "toll" road, and people paid tolls here to pass through. There were several other major stagecoach lines that developed in Oldham County that delivered mail, one of which connected at Beard's Station, which later was renamed Crestwood. A densely forested area of hardwood trees of hickory, ironwood, beech and popular adorned the area during its early history, which began around 1850. The community's founder was Joseph Beard, son of William and a nephew and direct descendant of John Campbell -- the leader of the Campbell clan, which has deep roots in Scottish history.

It's so small I didn't want to take pictures of the area because it was cramped with just five people on the waiting. What it lacks in space it makes up for in customer service. The gentleman in front of me was lost. The young woman working with him even though he didn't make a purchase. She used her data and looked up directions with a map on her phone. She was just as kind and helpful to me. There was a discrepancy between about the destination I was given and the one in the system of my package. She confirmed the address was correct. Quite happy with exchange.

It's been so bad, when the USPS started the Informed Delivery program, I couldn't wait to sign up, If you're not familiar with Informed Delivery, the program emails a scanned picture of the mail you're supposed to get each day. So using this program, which I do, I know each and every day what mail SHOULD be in my mail box that afternoon. I've had a many years long problem with not receiving mail that was supposed to be delivered per their system. I've been missing bank statements, utility bills and numerous other pieces of mail. Yes, I did go to the Post Office and complain to the Assistant Post Master several years ago. I was told it would be fixed. It was, for about a month or two. I'm currently missing my electric bill which a scanned picture was sent to me last Saturday morning and should have been delivered Saturday. Finally, the Informed Delivery program has a way to report missing mail. I've reported missing mail numerous times and have never received any feedback OR my missing mail. This may be one of the most pitiful Post offices in the entire system. BTW, some of my neighbors have complained about the same thing

While I was there, I asked a young lady if I could make an appointment for my wife to come in and renew her passport. The young lady stated the postal employees do not set up appointments, you have to go on line and make an appointment. The young lady even wrote down the web site for me. I made it very clear this was a renewal, not a new passport. I know she understood, because she quoted me the renewal price. We wanted to get this done as soon as possible so IF we decide to travel in the Fall, she would have it. Yesterday afternoon my wife navigated the USPS website (with a little frustration) and scheduled the first appointment available which was today, late afternoon. We wanted a morning appointment but none showed available. Today we ran some errands and had to kill three hours waiting for her appointment time. Upon entering the post office this afternoon, my wife stated she had an appointment for a passport renewal. The VERY person I spoke with yesterday, then told my wife; "You don't need an appointment for a renewal". She went on to hand me an envelope and told me to fill it out while she leaned against the counter and watched me. We were charged $15 for taking the passport photo. The postage was $6.70 for a total of $21.70 due the post office.

You'll pay a small fee to use them at the passport agency and their clerk will help complete your paperwork, plus verify your signature. This post office offers a decent parking lot as well as a pull through for those not going in, but needing to drop off mail. I've never struggled to find a spot for a quick in and out. The passport office isn't obvious until you are at the door, which is locked and you'll knock on. I stood in line at the mailing line first and they directed me. No need to be there early. My appointment was at 10a, their first, and no one was in the office until 10a. Only one person at a time so you may need to wait outside until the current customer leaves. Friendly service at the passport desk. I'd printed and completed 90% of the application and the clerk did his part plus witnessed my signature. The picture taking was a major close up! Let's say I won't be sharing my passport photo LOL - if you can do your own within the dimensions and make it flattering then I recommend that! Lucky to have this post office close to my home/office.
