The first time I came here was around 2022, when Covid practices were still prevalent and these guys had a pleasant outdoor tasting area. I specifically came back here with my friends to enjoy some wine and a great outdoor experience with hopefully the same hospitality we got last time. We arrived and we were seated...it is still beautiful, but it seemed like the person who took care of our tastings just appeared to be very distracted and not so into the wine pours...we got small explanations of what we were getting and probably got the smallest tasting pours I have ever encountered anywhere...in which we got five. I thought the price tag of 30pp they would not be so stingy...and we did purchase a few bottles but there was no discount on the tastings even for that. I would highly encourage you to go elsewhere if you want to get a proper tasting. This place is just not the same as it was....what a pity. read more

Came to Balletto for their cellar tour and tasting. The normal tastings are $20-$30 and the tour is $40 which seemed reasonable. It was cool to see the cellars and learn about the winery and their sustainability practices but if you've been to other vineyards, you have likely seen some of the same things. Still a fun experience and our guide was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. The 11 am tour on Saturday morning was just our group of 3 so we ended up getting a private tour. I do think the tram tour (only offered in summer and $50) sounds better and wished we could have seen more of the grounds especially when grapes were growing. The winery is dog friendly and family friendly. By the time we moved to the wine tasting around noon after the tour, the outdoor tasting area was mostly full. They also had some kind of cheese festival or tour going on. The four stars is more about the wine itself. It was okay but I didn't love it. They mostly produce pinot noir and chardonnay so some of it was maybe personal preference but even the zinfandel, which is a wine I usually like, was underwhelming. In the past when I've gone wine tasting, there's at least 1 bottle I feel is worth buying but I didn't find any here. Again, this is obviously a personal thing and I'm definitely no wine expert. The charcuterie and cheese that you can purchase for an additional cost was delicious but you can also bring your own food and enjoy it on the grounds. I think Balletto is best if you want a chill experience in a nice setting where you can bring family or pets as well as food. They do grow a lot of wine and also produce a bunch for other people. read more

We visited Balletto Vineyards during Memorial Day Weekend, having made a reservation in advance. The Reserve Tasting was only $25/person, which was very reasonable. When we arrived, our friendly hostess Charmaine sat us immediately. The (dog friendly) patio was fully covered in the area with tables, but also had a sunny portion with lawn games and Adirondack chairs. Charmaine also brought over water and a treat for my dog, which was so sweet! The Reserve Tasting included five wines, and took about an hour. The pours were pretty light, but we got to taste a few extra wines, which was exciting. Charmaine walked us through each wine and was very informative in her descriptions, in a totally unpretentious way. I enjoyed most of the wines and there were definitely some unique ones in the mix. My favorite was the Zinfandel, and I ended up ordering a glass after the tasting. Overall, a very pleasant experience! read more

We recently had ten family members visit from out of state. One day, we decided to take the crew wine tasting. One of those stops along the way was Balletto. My wife and I had been here once before with friends, so we were somewhat familiar with the winery. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Debbie (I believe) and our group of 13 was escorted to an indoor tasting area already set up. Debbie was an outstanding hostess/server throughout our journey of sampling their excellent wines. She was very informative and we all learned so much about the winery and wines offered. She also dealt with our crazy group admirably. Bravo!! I do believe this was everyone's favorite stop for the day. I based that on, two of us signed up to become club members. The 2012 Pinot Noir she brought out for us to sample was the clincher. If you want a non-pretentious winery that serves up excellent wine in a casual setting, his is your place. The wine tasting experience here was excellent. Our server walked us through Balletto's Estate tasting. We enjoyed tastings the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, 2022 Rose of Pinot Noir, and 2020 Russian River Pinot Noir and 2020 Zinfandel. Jeff was great, love that he told us what each wine would pair nicely with. ***3.5 Stars*** Delicious Pinot Gris and Gewurtztraminer for the win! Balletto exposed me to some seriously tasty summertime wines that I've been dreaming about as of late. Our tasting didn't start off of the right foot, but Dante really saved the day and the tasting for us. My friend and I made reservations for tastings here in the late afternoon. When we arrived, we were greeted by the hostess and seated on their patio. Their indoor space was closed due to COVID, but their patio space is really charming. Rob was our host for the first part of our tasting. While he was cordial, he seemed to be pretty disengaged during our tasting. We did the reserve tasting which includes a pre-poured flight of 5 tastes from their current reserve wine selections. Tastings are $20 and are waived with a 2 bottle purchase. Also, no outside food is allowed but I'm not sure if they offer food (didn't see any food menus around). I'm generally not a fan of pre-poured wine flights at wineries as I feel like you lose the engagement piece of the sommeliers. However, I've had some excellent experiences with very engaging sommeliers even though the flights are pre-poured. Rob did not offer a very engaging experience for us. He poured our flights, gave us very little information on the wines, and didn't check on us much during our tasting. In fact, he never even came back to tell us that he was leaving. Instead, his replacement, Dante, came by to let us know that he would be taking over for the rest of the tasting. And thank goodness that he did because I was already low key unimpressed with Rob's service AND with the reserve wine flight. Dante literally saved the day. The wines for the reserve tasting were not at all up to par. The white wines in the flight were overly oaked and the reds were very earthy/funky. It was almost as if they'd been open for too long and had been sitting out. When it came time for us to pay for our tasting, Dante asked us if we'd like to buy any bottles to waive the fee. We were honest with him and told him that we didn't really enjoy any of the wines that we had. He understood and offered to pour us some other wines off of their wine list to try to find some that we liked. So noble of him! And guess what?! We both fell in love with their white wines. Their Pinot Gris, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer were all top notch! The crazy thing is, all of these wines were extremely reasonable in price (all $20 each) and they all tasted a hell of a lot better then their "reserve" line wines. THESE are the wines that they should be showcasing - not those others. Or, maybe they do for their regular flight?! Either way, we were so grateful that Dante took care of us and allowed up to delve deeper in to their white wines to find something that we liked. We took home a bottle of each of the white wines that we tried. After all, $20 for these incredibly refreshing summertime whites is an absolute steal. I've since finished them all and have been dreaming of about their Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer (my two faves that I tried). So even though things started off a bit rocky, I'm excited to come back again to refill my summer white wine stash. I'm hoping that we'll get hosted by Dante again next time too because he was awesome! read more

Sometimes I have to suppress a yawn when interacting with winery personnel. The "wine babble" that gets relayed when wine is being poured and sipped can bore me to tears and it worsens when pretension is added to the equation. Balletto Vineyards though? The wine babble here is the polar opposite of that described above. Balletto staff has interesting and amusing tales to tell, not so much about the wine as about the interesting history of their winery. Without giving much away I'll just say that I was interested to learn that Balletto's origins are in vegetable farming. As drought made that enterprise more dicey the vegetables were sacrificed and grapes planted in their place. Many of the workers who originally farmed the vegetable fields made the transition to grapes and remain with the Balletto family today, making 100% estate-grown wine. Balletto sells most of their grapes to other winemakers saving only a small portion for bottling under their own label. It's those bottles you'll sample here and since they make adequate bank on selling grapes, the wine they do sell here is priced extremely reasonably. Their web site promises wine that "overdelivers" and I concur; Balletto's excellent wine is priced so reasonably that you won't have any hesitation purchasing 2 bottles to waive the $20 tasting fee. It's not often one can say that in this area. Balletto Vineyards is casual, without pretense. The patio set-up looks out onto vineyards but it is not any sort of awe-inspiring view. Still, I enjoyed everything about my Balletto Vineyards experience on a weekday afternoon. As much as I like to try new things, I'd definitely make time for a return visit when I again find myself in the area. read more

We learned we don't know anything about wine but all we need to know is...do you like it? The answer was a resounding yes across the board. Again, because we know nothing about wine, we'd scarfed a bag of flamin' hot cheetos and wasabi almonds on the way to the tasting. As I was nodding and discussing gopher mitigation strategies with the vintners, I couldn't help scribble in the tasting notes how well a $50 bottle of wine pairs with junk food. Took some out of state visitors here on a recent day of wine tasting. I made a reservation in advance but found we were running late. I emailed and received a prompt response saying we could arrive 30 minutes late. Upon arrival several parties were finishing up and we were greeted and served by Ian. Ian was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. He was kind enough to offer wine tastes to suit our individual tastes. I prefer Zinfandel (and they have delicious luxurious tasting zinfandels). My guests preferred white and sweet wines. Ian had something to offer everyone that allowed each of us to enjoy the experience tailored to our palates. I recommend this winery for an array of wines sure to please everyone from the wine connoisseur to the novice. I joined the wine club after being invited to attend an event at the winery. I love the family owned winery experience and continue to be amazed and pleased with the service. I enjoy the attention to detail and the way they make wine club members feel valued and appreciated. I've received hand written notes, as well as emails following a visit. They truly create a special experience unlike any other wine club I've joined (and being in Sonoma County, I have joined a variety of different clubs). During the pandemic, they were quick to implement protocols to keep patrons/visitors safe and have really done an excellent job of making shopping easy and convenient. My husband LOVES baseball and this winery was advertising an 1800's old fashioned baseball game and wine tasting. So of course I had to purchase tickets. We took the 2 hour drive and made a nice weekend out of. The venue is quite beautiful. Apparently this event was also their members pick-up party. We had a separate check in table with a different colored wristband so they knew we weren't members. There were 4 wine tastings that honestly were damn good! The unfortunate part of this experience for us was we felt the staff was unwelcoming and didn't engage with us. The owner was actually pouting at Station 2 and he looked miserable and not one staff member asked us how we were or what we thought about our time there. The tastings were not explained to us, thankfully we could read lol I wish they improved on their customer service if they want to grow their membership. Getting lost on a road trip with no service in Sebastopol, my friend and I stumbled upon this gorgeous vineyard and just had to stop to take pictures of it's multi-colored fall leaf varieties. The vineyards were breathtaking and after 30 minutes or so of photoshoots we decided to check out the tasting room and see what these vines could produce. A general tasting was $10 but we split one costing us $5 each and giving us a few sips of 7 different wines. This vineyard is strongest in their Red Wines but also carries a fine Rosè and Zinfadel. My favorite of the tasting actually happened to be the Rosè which was a 2013 Brut Rosè. The 2014 Burnside Pinot Noir was also very intriguing especially because the fires had just passed through NorCal so I had thought that was why the wine tasted smokey. However, this wine was barreled way before the fires took place and just happened to taste that way which is why they named it's location Burnside Lane. The gal working our tasting experience was very kind and somewhat informative. I would've liked to know a little more about what was in the blends and what they best paired with. But for a $5 tasting and an extra taste thrown in there for fun, it was definitely worth the experience. I'm not sure if I'll ever be back but if you live up in this area I would definitely recommend stopping by to see the gorgeous leaves in the Fall and/or if you love red wines you must come try their blends soon. Located on 5700 Occidental Rd in Santa Rosa, California, you'll find the Balletto Vineyards. The tasting room is open 7 days a week from 10am-5pm. I was fortunate enough to meet the man behind the vineyards, the founder & owner himself, John Balletto. He gave up his scholarship at the University of California - Davis, in order to help his family in the late 1970s & early 1980s. By 1995, the business was one of the largest farms in Northern California (growing over 70 vegetables on 700+ acres). With California's water shortage occurring, The Balletto family transitioned from vegetables to growing wine grapes. Through the hardship of three El Niño storms wiping out a majority of their vegetable crops & $2million dollars of damage later, the Balletto family pushed through. Today, they are one of the most successful vineyards in the industry. Their hospitality & their great service is admirable & refreshing.
