The drive there is intense the last couple of miles past North Fork. Take a car or truck you don't mind trekking a dirt road!! The place is actual perfection. We didn't have to pay you literally pull in and pick a spot. Each campsite has 1) a place to park a car marked with a wooden post on the ground 2) a bathroom (no running water) 3) a fire pit with a grill on top 4) a place to set up a tent I wouldn't recommend a RV or for people who don't like camping. The surrounding area is beautiful tall trees, quiet and there was literally only one other family there but it's like we were all alone. The falls are very close "over the bridge" and it is beautiful. I haven't been back sorry if info isn't 100% accurate but it's the best place I've camped in a while for free Like I said not a lot of amenities just good old fashioned camping

My husband and I made a recent trip to Lake Huntington and stayed at Catavee Campground at Campsite…read more#19 which was opening weekend (Memorial Day wknd end of May). We were mostly snowed in as the snowmelt had not completely gone away from winter but the picnic table, fire pit and most of an area for our tent were clear. And just enough of our driveway for our vehicle to fit. Then one of the park folks camp with a snowplow came to clear the remaining driveway the second morning we were there which was great. This site was incredible. The best features are that it is wide, so it is great for groups I would think. Multiple landings for tents available. We loved that it was shaded and bumped up against the stream/brook which vented out to peekaboo views of the lake. Campsite #21 right next door had direct views of the lake but also lent to more road traffic. Our site was very quiet. Mostly level ground. Definitely call ahead to check the weather and campsite status. We might not have gone had we known there was so much snow on the ground, but we made the best of it. Our camp host Bob was great and lent us a shovel the first night. Several park folks checked on us throughout the wknd. The bathrooms were also great. Flushable toilets. Very clean and well kept with tissue stocked throughout the weekend. My recommendations would be to bring a pop up solar shower since your only option in this area otherwise is the RV site in town for $5 per person which is completely disgusting. 6in of standing water with freezing cold water. Not worth it. Maybe also bring your own wash basins or something for dishwashing as there are no wash sinks nearby. Only a spicket at site #19 where you should not wash your dishes as it can clog the drain and attract bears and other critters. We did not see or hear any wildlife the entire time we were there. We brought our 22lb corgi daschund dog/love of our life and felt comfortable the whole time with her on a tie down stake. Definitely will go back and recommend this site to others!!

This past…read moreweekend my wife and I along with several family members of mine, booked a last minute camping trip to Catavee! We were all so happy with the experience. Here are a few things worth mentioning... #1: Sites 13 & 24 are two of the BEST sites at this small campground. If you are going with a group, these are the 2 you want to go for. 24 is nicer than 13 but each of these are on the same loop but back up to each other. As the pictures below show (hoping I can upload the ones we have) you are surrounded by lush forestry throughout your campsite. Luckily, you still feel like you can breathe even with the many trees. These two sites are also close enough to the water spout and the CLEAN restrooms! A small parking lot is also near these two sites as well. Keep in mind that this campground is very small, so really you are close enough to the ONE restroom facility at the camp no matter where you stay. #2: There are no showers in the Huntington Lake area. Luckily for us, a family member brought up a trailer but no one really worried about showering since we were only camping a few days. #3: During the weekdays, you will probably be the ONLY ones at this campsite. This was a huge bonus. During the weekend, just about every site was full which was totally fine because you are in good distance for proper privacy from other campsites. We stayed from Sat-Tues and the last couple days were very nice yet eerie as we were the only ones in the entire campground. Definitely gave us the seclusion and mountain experience we were hoping for! Very nice peaceful break! #4: The Lake is very close to camp. (Walking distance!) But, There are about 5-10 other campgrounds in the area. Keep this in mind when you are deciding. Best thing to do is call the campground registration office! They are very very helpful! They will help you make your selection on the campground that will be best for you. One other campsite that was literally sitting on the lake that we walked through was Deer Creek, and College Campground. If we go back, which we WILL, we will probably try one of these two campgrounds even though Catavee was perfect for us. #5: Rancheria Falls-probably one of the highlights of our trip. We drove our Chevy Tahoe all the way up the dirt road (don't worry, its bumpy but even small cars can make it up), parked, and headed onto the hike. This is a beautiful and very EASY hike to do with the whole family! We had our 3 year old son, and 13 month old daughter who was worn on the back and did it with no problem. BE ADVISED-it gets cliffy as you make your way to the falls. We did not let go of our son and kept him on the hillside of the trail. We hear of too many accidents when families go on hikes, so be very careful. Also-perfect trail to pack a lunch and eat somewhere on the way. There were only a few others doing the hike that we happened to walk past. It is beautiful and was definitely a highlight for us! It was 1 hour total round trip tops. #6: There are no bears that come through the campsites in the Huntington Lake area. This was very important for being my wife's first camping trip. She slept well at night! :)

Just got back from a 2 night stay at Dorabelle campground and feel compelled to write a review…read morebased on the cleanliness of the bathrooms, Lol! The camp hosts take great pride in keeping the place clean, we saw someone cleaning the bathrooms multiple times a day. I'm telling you, you would never guess that these are non-flushing restrooms. They were immaculate. We stayed at spot #60, which is in the lower part of the loop and was a very short, easy walk, to the lake. The site was perfect, not too close to other sites so there was some privacy, and only one site away from the restrooms. Fair warning though, you do have to take some steps down from the parking spot to the actual site, so if you have a lot of stuff to carry, just be aware that you will need to travel down about 5-6 steps. The site itself has decent shade, the picnic table and fire pit are in great condition and there is a very nice, clean, open and perfectly flat spot to put your tent between two trees. If you forget something, "town" is just outside of the campground entrance, within a few minutes you have access to restaurants, and other stores. Somehow though, you feel off-grid, even though you are so close to town. We had full cell phone service, even though we chose to stay off our phones, if you needed to use them you totally could. Overall, I highly recommend this campground and we really enjoyed our stay

We will definitely return! I have to give a shoutout to the camp host Jamie! She is such a sweetheart and beautiful soul. She made the stay feel extra homey. It was a bit cold at night lowest 42 I believe and highs were 64 degrees. During day it was nice and warm with the sun shining. Ensure to bring lots of warm clothes to bundle up in the evening and be kind to the campground. Ensure to pack anything that was packed in to keep the area clean. Oh and be aware, you can hear wolves and coyotes throughout your stay. Ensure to keep all food put in a tote safely and in the provided camp storage so the bears are not attracted to your campsite. Keep a close eye on the little ones at all times!

Our campsite could have used a little more shade, but thankfully the weather wasn't too hot during our stay. The vault toilets were plentiful throughout the campground and were kept reasonably clean, which I always appreciate when camping. One of the highlights was the creek, which was perfect for both swimming and fishing, though the water was definitely freezing cold! I was also happy to find that the campground is dog-friendly, as my dog had an amazing time exploring the area and splashing around. Overall, it was a great camping experience, and I'd gladly return in the future.

Without any reasonable cause, he approached our group at 12 noon and abruptly demanded that we turn off our music, which was neither loud nor disruptive. What made this worse was that other campsites were playing their music at much higher volumes, yet he chose to ignore them and single out our group. The situation escalated later that evening, around 8 PM, when our family was simply sharing stories and enjoying time around the campfire. The same host barged into our site and declared that we were "getting loud," warning us to quiet down and threatening to return "or else." Meanwhile, other campsites were openly showing movies and running loud sound systems without any intervention. This selective enforcement felt malicious, discriminatory, and completely unprofessional. No paying guest should ever feel targeted or treated unfairly, especially when others are allowed to do the very things we were reprimanded for. To make matters worse, the water service was never restored for the entire duration of our stay, an unacceptable inconvenience on top of everything else. Our group, along with our friends and family, will not be returning to Rancheria Campground. Beautiful scenery cannot make up for hostile treatment and inconsistent, disrespectful customer service.

Resort review: I drove up there to drop off another hiker that was supposed to start the journey but contracted COVID just before star that was joining my wife for the rest of the John Muir trail, and spend the night with my wife in a room with a bed, toilet., and shower, before she got back on the trail. The place is what I like; a civilized retreat that is far from civilization and has all the basic amenities that one would need to enjoy some peaceful rest, relaxation, day hikes, sitting around the fire, and fishing. The Room are very basic, and trust me, it's a gem to the hikers, and a basic room to those not trough-hiking. I say; who cares, its warm, has indoor plumbing with shower, heating, electric lights and outlets to charge your electronic junk, a little convenience kitchen, chairs, tables and night-stands. This is the best of a soul-enriching retreat that you don't have to hike miles to get to, and drive to {make sure you have some clearance underneath the vehicle)- soccer mom van did it fine, sports car would not be choice. I would bring my truck, but would also consider my Ford Mach-E EV, asking prior about charging it back up at the resort. The atmosphere was electrified with all the John Muir trail hikers that were coming in to pick up their re-supply of backpacking food and other supplies that they had mailed up to Vermillion Valley Resort (VVR) previously - what a great service! The hikers were so happy to be able to resupply on a little bit of civilization, that was still way away from "the rat race", and have a brief respite from the tent, camp stove, filtering water, and making sure of good foot and body hygiene. For those that did not reserve a room, there was still laundry machines available, showers, backpacking re-supplies, and of course very tasty n filling café food.The kitchen serves great home-cooked comfort food that really appeals to the hiking crowd, and to myself as I just love it. Many of the hikers knew each other from the trail and I felt excitement that comes from the hikers who saw and made friends together on-trail: they had lots of catching up to do, and a bit more time to do so-precious. The free camping area for tents was super-cool! As for my experience, I relished that I could bring a wonderful feast of King Crab, steak, Caesar salad, fresh asparagus (from the Fresno Costco on my way up) my wife and her hiking friends without a big detour for them. It was so perfect, and the staff was perfect at accommodating needs, like the magician Priscilla. She always had great answers, always available, and just seemed like "an old soul" in her demeanor, attitude and ability to poly-task. Nuf Sed, Greg

It's advisable to go earlier rather than later because they might run out of the entree you want. They make stuff fresh daily, so that's a danger. The hardworking server managed the front end solo. She did a good job. My 1/2 lb bison burger patty was cooked to delicious perfection. Having a non-dehydrated meal after an 8- day BP trip was a treat. Having this bison burger meal with the option of 2 side dishes was heavenly. No, potato fries wasn't one of the choices. I did choose the asparagus and zucchini cooked in marinara sauce and the restuffed baked half potato. This was an exceptional meal that was almost too big for me to finish, but I managed! The bison meat was flavorful and had not the slightest greasy quality about it. Getting meals of this quality when far off the beaten track is a delightful expectation when at Mono Hot Springs. You would be hard-pressed to find a meal this good in the towns further down the mountain.

Many questions were unable to be answered. There was no WiFi and the sites were so narrow that we could not extend our awning completely. Our neighbor was only able to put his awning out partway until it was within 3 inches of our couch. My sewer connection was in his front yard and the neighbor on the other side was in our front yard. The "full stocked camping and RV store" was a laugh. It consisted mostly of candy and ice cream. There was no clubhouse. All in all, not a pleasant experience. I would not stay here again.
