I saw A Streetcar Named Desire at the BAM Harvey Theater and really enjoyed the play. The theater is beautiful and rustic inside and a bit more modern outside. The acoustics were great and came to a showing that had CC which also added to the ease of understanding the play as I was able to read along. They have refreshments alcohol and non-alcoholic for purchase, along with snacks. They had a coat check. I will say the bathroom line is pretty intense so maybe finding a way to ease that would be beneficial. Definitely a great location for shows/plays in Brooklyn! read more

Such a beautiful theater that they remain the same as they reopened. It was abandoned for a long time so it's very rundown, but it keeps a very authentic feel of the exposed bricks and rusty beam. You can still see some faded art work at some places but most of them are gone I got rush ticket to see Cyrano, which surprising it's the best seats in the house that we sit right in front on the floor and we were closest to the action. Which the setting there's no better seats than this. read more

I did not like the balcony seats, it's so steep, the chairs are also so high, your feet doesn't reach the floor. We went to see Cyrano , it was terrible. Not my style of play. I was so confused. It felt like a rehearsal table read. I'm paying $100 for lousy balcony seats, I expect a good show. I must have missed something bc people were clapping. James McAvoy was awesome. But he was too handsome to play Cyrano. I dont know. I don't get it. The theater sells canned wine n cocktails for $12. It's all right. I'm Not a fan of canned drinks. The building is in renovation? old exposed brick n scalding adds a charm to the building I suppose. Overall was a interesting experience. read more

Three and a half stars. We were sitting in the cheap seats - clear view of the stage, great acoustics, quite pleasant. Lots of complaints about how steep the seating is, but having just seen a show on Broadway, I found this venue to be far more pleasant and roomy - no complaints here (plus, you get what you pay for). What really drove me crazy, though, was the line for the ladies restroom during intermission. It snaked around seven times until we all almost ended up back out the door and on the street! Yes, it did move relatively quickly, but it is stressful having to spend the entirety of intermission on line for the bathroom, not even being sure if you are going to make it back to your seat before the show begins again. Of course, the line for the men's room was almost non-existent. WHY??? Why do they continue to build/outfit venues with insufficient bathrooms for women? If I ran for mayor of this city, the heart of my campaign would be sufficient bathrooms for women (and sirens that aren't so deafeningly loud) - and I would probably win! Or else, let's make gender neutral bathrooms the norm - as soon as men joined us on these ridiculous lines, you better believe more restrooms would be added. read more

A few things to note if you're sitting in the upper balcony: 1) It's very steep and might trigger your fear of heights. The chairs themselves actually have foot rests built-in because the stadium seats are significantly higher than the ground. 2) It gets HOT. Like sweltering if they're running the spotlight and projector, which is right there. For a winter show, they should really take that into account when people are wearing sweaters and heavy coats. It made the latter half of the performance pretty unbearable. That said, we were there for A Very Meow Meow Holiday Show, which was excellent. Meow Meow is great, and she made great use of the space (never thought I'd see someone crowdsurf at BAM Harvey, but here we are). There was also an afterparty that promised drinks and light snacks. The drinks were plentiful, but the snacks were just popcorn and a ton of cookies/cupcakes. Nothing of real substance. Oh well, it was included with the ticket cost, so can't really complain since I drank my fair share of wine. read more

I went here February 26,2020 to see Madea . This is a small theatre compared to a typical broadway venue. This was a selling point because it was difficult to get a bad seat. You could see everything easily from all seats. This show also used a screen to magnify characters during the performance which also helped me seeing everything. The story line was really good and it was great to see Rose Byrne in that role. She was the whole show and I'm so glad I got to see her perform live. The character was a mix of Ellen and Patty from Damages. The price of the show wasn't bad at all- especially since it had big headliners. read more

While we waited to enter the theatre, we had the pleasure of seeing Blake Lively in person. There were paparazzi snapping her pictures. It was a great event. The PR provided us with champagne and popcorns. Moreover, there was a Q&A with the stars after the movie. The theater is absolutely beautiful. It has this historical feel to it. read more

Visited for Madonna's Madame X show. The show was ok, I would rate at 3 out of 5, because Madonna was 2h late and spoiled the show for many people, who were simply too tired to fully enjoy it or dance at 2 AM. How inconsiderate and unprofessional.. But the theater itself made a great impression on me and deserves 4 stars. Recently renovated, lovely upper level lobby with cute lighting, spacious clean restrooms, efficient staff. The bar had one red, one white wine and 2 kinds of beer, sufficient, but could be better. I was glad they had some cookies and chips for purchase. You can bring the drinks with leak proof cups to your seats, but no food, things can only be eaten in the Lobby/ Foyer. The seats are very tight with very little leg room. It is common in Broadway, but truly a torture for tall people. The mezzanine seats were very good, you can see the entire stage without any obstruction. I was seated in row H and the view was still very good. The sound system was great. As for Madonna's Madame X show, I don't regret going, but the Diva started 2 h late with some half-a$$ announcement about injury of 2 dancers, which nobody bought. Instead of 9.30, she kindly appeared at 11.15pm with no apology and her usual attitude. Ticketmaster had sent 3 emails prior the show requesting to arrive by 8.30 due to security checks and the need to lock the phones with Yondr. So the entire audience and staff were there for hours with no information as for when it would start. Very disrespectful and unprofessional. I would rather be told it would start at 11.15 than be held in this unpleasant suspense. When she finally appeared, a large part of the audience was dozing in the seats, tired of hours long wait. Many many people left before she started and during the show, so many empty seats! I was hoping this would be the best Madonna's show I saw, with intimate experience, no phone distraction. Despite some highs, the show overall didn't do it for me, the music was very loud, lots of computer enhanced robotic singing, a lot of politically charged messages on the screen regarding gun control, which after all the waiting and delays just felt slow and annoying. The real treat were the old hits she sang, which pulled people from their seats. But even Madonna seemed tired, her voice raspy with audible hoarseness. She joked about making no money on the show for which the tickets were $400-1000 on average. Pretty insensitive and unnecessary to share with the audience. I wish the concert started on time, I think I would have enjoyed it with much more attention and energy. But well, that's Madonna's world. Take it or leave it. read more

Kid Koala was at BAM Harvey Theatre last week with Nufonia Must Fall. I went to the theatre on the 19th with a group of friends to see it. There were six of us and we were seated in the upper orchestra section. I thought it was a beautiful venue. The staff were very friendly. Actually, my boyfriend purchased the tickets online for pick-up, so we initially got to the theatre about an hour or so before the show to get the physical tickets. We had taken the 2 train to Nevins and walked to Harvey Theatre. The staff let us use the bathrooms before the show since we were going there later for Kid Koala (which they didn't have to do, but were nice to let us in). After grabbing something to eat at Falafel Bros and walking around Fort Greene, we returned to the venue for the show. We got through the line quickly and entered the theatre. A few of us purchased drinks. Because we didn't have much time to hang out in the lobby before the show started, we had to purchase the plastic cups. Beers were about $8-$9 and you can drink in the lobby, but if you want to take your drink into the theatre, you need to purchase your drink in one of BAM's covered plastic cups (which costs $5 more). While I like the plastic cup and use it at home, my boyfriend actually wished he hadn't spent $13 on a beer. The lights in the house dimmed to signal that the show was starting soon. We walked up the stairs to the upper orchestra and were guided to our row by the staff (again, super friendly and helpful) and handed theatre programs and bingo cards (it's part of the Kid Koala NMF thing). The acoustics in the venue were great. When he spoke and when the musicians played, it sounded crystal clear. The way the seating is arranged, you have a great view of the stage no matter where you are seated. I preferred our spots that night because there was so much going on for this show that I liked having a wider view of all the going-ons on the stage (Kid Koala at the turntables, the string quartet, the projected live puppetry, and the puppeteers moving from set station to set station). The only negative about the theatre was the actual seats. While I was fine with them, I could tell they bothered some people. The backs of the chairs in our section leaned a bit forward, so I would see people re-position now and then. A couple of people from our group noted that they were uncomfortable. I was fine because I literally was on the edge of my seat for the show. I had a great expereience at the BAM Harvey Theatre and it puts on programs that interest me. I would definitely come here again for sure, but not everyone in our group would. read more

This is a cool, little theater in downtown Brooklyn. Sightlines to the stage are clear, and the acoustics are good. I have been here several times, and the stagehands and technical crew always do a good job with the sound, lighting, and sets. The theater was renovated--sort of. Modern seating was installed, but they left the exposed beams, bricks, and peeling plaster, which accentuates the historical character of the place. The seat cusions are comfortable, even for a three-hour show, and leg room is adequate, but there are no armrests, and the backrests are solid wood, like church pews. You are better off not checking your coat, and, instead, using it as padding behind you. The lobby is cozy, with subdued lighting, café tables, and several klosks where you can buy sandwiches, chips, soft drinks, beer, wine, bottled water, and chocolate bars. The staff is polite and friendly. There is a large, commercial parking lot directly across the street. Event parking is around $17, including tax. There are a number of decent restaurants, cafés, and bars within walking distance. i attended the production of "A Streetcar Named Desire", performed by the Sydney Theatre Company. I give this venue top marks for hosting a limited, four-week run of this show. For me, this was about as good as live theatre gets. Cate Blanchett, as Blanche DuBois, was phenomenal. read more

Then we walked, ate and bought in the streets lined with African merchandise. I love this theater and BAM overall. Very provocative and avant-garde performances with stellar actors. I have seen three productions here in the last year Diary of a Madman with Geoffrey Rush, King Lear with Derek Jacobi and 69 Degrees as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival. The productions have all been profound and perverse in their writing, staging, and set design. Every time I attend a show I am inspired; the creative flame inside me starts burning and my heart pulsating with a healthy anxiety and desire to make an impact, leave an imprint on the world through my art. The space itself is rustic and though it looks like it is falling apart; it is purposely made to look that way, and it is preserved as such, holes and cracks in the wall, different color concrete and brick interior, layers of brown cement over yellow over green make for an interesting texture as if you have been transported to an abandoned building after the aftermath of war; reminiscent of buildings in Budapest or even forgotten by time Spanish colonial homes in Old Havana; though remember...this is intentional at The Harvey. The theater itself is state of the art, though it does not hold a large number of people it is about medium size. There is a downstairs where tickets are expensive (between $50-$150) and the upstairs ($20-$50) which is quite a hike up but the views and sound of the stage is still topnotch. Drinks and snack at intermission though you can easily sneak your own in your purse (they don't check purses or pockets). For cancellations If you come in early enough you are highly likely to get in, theater doors don't open till 6pm but depending on the demand for the show lines may start forming prior to 6pm outside the theater doors. Closest train from Manhattan is the 4 and 5 (Green Line) stop at Nevin in Brooklyn and walk a block. If I lived in this city I would have a BAM membership since they also have film screenings, lectures, music festivals, you name it! But since I don't live here I settle for checking their user-friendly website when I know I will be in town and find out what is playing. I also really like that if you call the theater you don't get an annoying machine you actually get an automated answer but very quickly access a human voice (option 1 then option 2 when you call in to reach a human being in the ticket office). They release tickets constantly so it is wise to be persistent and call often if you are determined to see a show that is sold out. read more

Awful venue. There's a difference between an elegantly decaying old building and a total dump, and this place is most definitely the latter. There are subway stations that haven't been cleaned in years still looking like they're in better repair than BAM Harvey. Enjoy paying high ticket prices to be surrounded by layers of flaking paint and crumbling masonry. In the balcony, your knees are almost guaranteed to be banging into the seat in front of you, the angle is super-steep, and if one person in your row fidgets, all of you are going to feel it. The place screams "fire trap." I might not mind so much if the ticket prices were cheaper... To add insult to injury, if you want to take your intermission drink back to your seat instead of necking it in the three minutes you'll have left by the time you get to order, they charge you an additional $5 for a cup! It's a theater, I can understand $8 for a beer in that context, but $5 extra for a lousy cup? All that money they get from the city, Bloomberg Philanthropies, wealthy patrons, memberships, etc, and they still nickel-and-dime you. Ugh. That money certainly isn't going into basic maintenance. read more

BAM Harvey. You're killing me. Horrifying for the people in the seats up high.. this is no exaggeration. I will never ever ever go to another event where the only seats available require me to look down from the ceiling. I went to an "Evening with Michael Mann" exceptional talk, entertaining, dream guest.. and of course sold out. I had to pay $30.00 to get in, even for a level 3 member I guess this was a special engagement... now I wonder what happened to all the discounts I was promised... If you have any fear of heights whatsoever this will not be a pleasant experience. Also be prepared there are a series of very tall, very long multiple staircases to climb- not just myself, but many other people were stopping and laughing we couldn't believe how many stairs there are. I was also surrounded by grown men who felt the same way and were all sandwiched together with their legs hanging over the seats and of course the only railing came up half way to my knees.. They were cracking jokes about how high up the seats are it was extremely uncomfortable. Very scary seating, borderline dangerous... Anyone with knee issues will sit here at their own peril. About an hour into the event, my knees were in excruciating pain it is physically impossible to straighten your legs in the seats upstairs. I have to say this was my first trip here, I learned a great lesson. Everyone loves BAM, the programming, events, performances- it goes without saying BAM itself is sensational. But I wish one of these glowing reviews could have given me a heads up. read more

This is one of my favorite large theater spaces in New York. Seats aren't the most comfortable, but design elements are great and sight lines are excellent, especially if you're anywhere in the orchestra (even in the way back--in fact IMHO rear orchestra are some of the best seats in the house.) However, the main reason I'm writing this is to provide a bit of guidance: this theater is not deep, but it's high. If you're in the gallery, you are VERY VERY high up. Much higher than you would be in a Mezzanine section in a Broadway theater. For the most part, you will be looking down on the actors' heads. So if you're budget-minded: spring for the extra couple of bucks and get Upper Orchestra instead, it makes a world of difference. Trust me. read more

THE PRODUCTION I just saw the stellar Rupert Everett playing Oscar Wilde in The Judas Kiss. I was happy to make another attempt to get to BAM, but again this proved to be much more mental and physical effort than I ever expected. GETTING THERE Getting to BAM from Manhattan on the weekend always has been and continues to be exceptionally slow and difficult. Years ago, the Fulton Street station was closed for its transformation, and even now that this spectacular facility is open, the A trains are diverted on most weekends to the F line--and the 2 and 3 trains that get closest to the Harvey Theater also run on the local track. The trip ends up being over 1-1/2 hours, and despite the astonishing number of new super-tall apartment buildings under construction adjacent to the theater, the area is commercially and visually desolate. There is nowhere to get a snack other than McDonald's. THE SPACE AND THE SEATS Although the raw, unfinished nature of the renovation is intriguing, crowd control is poor, and way-finding in the overcrowded lobby is difficult. Balcony occupants are directed in circles back toward the sidewalk for a five-story ascent--there is no elevator--to elevated narrow seats with virtually no leg room and creaking foot rests. CONCLUSION Although the sight lines are excellent, the experience of place is arduous and disagreeable. read more

This a review of the BAM Harvey Theatre only and not the production that I saw there (Sam Mende's direction of 'As You Like It' -- which I adored). This is an aesthetically pleasing, intimate theatre with only a few bad seats in the house (views obstructed by columns or lighting structures). I appreciated the staff at this theatre as well for not allowing late-comers in until a scene change as well. All in all I wish I could give this place a great review. I really do. Unfortunately, my back is still killing me from the torture devices that the theatre calls seats. Seriously, would it have KILLED them to pay the extra money for comfortable seating? A little padding for the back and ass, that's all I'm asking people! Also two stalls in a ladies room will never BE enough in any public venue. read more

When you have to sit on the most uncomfortable stools in the world but still have a fantastic time, you know a place has some pretty fantastic entertainment. BAM's Harvey Theatre is a wonderful spot to catch a great play right here in Brooklyn. No need to go to Manhattan. I've seen Sam Mendez direct As You Like it and Richard III, starring Kevin Spacey here. Just recently however at BAM's Cinemafest they debuted brand new screen the size of the whole stage. The thing was tremendous. They also installed a state of the art sound system. So whenever there is a big film to show on big nights, The Harvey will be the spot to be. I was at the kickoff event for Cinemafest and saw "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" starring Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. Amazing film. Not at all surprised by BAM's choice for a film to present the debut of their new state of the art screen on. The only beef with the Harvey is the upstairs balcony seats. The view is great. The seats, not so much. If my mind wasn't so enthralled in what I was watching, I'd pay more attention to the awful pains my back was feeling. It's like when you have a mistress step on your back for hours on end, calling you worthless and slamming her heels into your spine when you don't answer her correctly......... not that I know what any of that is about. So if you want to see some amazing theater without going into Manhattan or the debut of a super limited release indie film, The Harvey is your destination. read more

Oh, Harvey Theatre! Was it so recently that our love/hate relationship began? Did it really start with "Cymbeline"? Did you hate me so much that you wouldn't warn me about how very, very much it sucks to sit up in your gallery, where the seats are glorified bar stools and you're so high up you need binoculars? And that there's no elevator so a person has to climb a veritable mountain of stairs to get to their loser seats that might be so awful that they'll leave early rather than endure "numb butt" any longer? But we kissed and made up, right? You heard me whispering sweet nothings about what a grand space you are, in your tattered glory. You showed me forgiveness when my extreme right, row D tickets to "King Lear" were ever so awesome: comfortable and wonderfully close to the stage. In fact, up until row F, I bet all those extreme side seats are pretty good. Now I'm struggling with our relationship again. I've got tickets for "The Seagull" and even though Ian McKellen is on tonight, I am totally dreading my nosebleed, gallery seats. I mean, it must really blow the hairy goats up there for me to consider selling my tickets to see Ian, right? read more

On the subway, next to the Dr. Zizmor skin care ad and the personal injury law firm ad, I saw ads for "The Bridge Project" at BAM featuring Shakespeare's As You Like It and Tempest. I was surprised to find out later that Sam Mendes, famous for directing the academy award-winning film about the beauty of a floating plastic bag, was directing both productions. Having now gone to see As You Like It, I realize why a director like Mendes would invest his time to a production in a theater smack dab in the middle of downtown Brooklyn. It's because there just happens to be a damn fine theater there. Now I'm not a frequent play-goer but I've been to Broadway and I've been to off-off broadway, and this theater is definitely more along the lines of a broadway theater. As others have commented, the theater's inside is a great blend of old and new. Old are the exposed brick and beams and the peeling paint of the walls. New are the seats, although if you're up in the gallery, aka the balcony, you'll have to deal with a vertigo-inducing steepness. Also, I really like how the stage is level with the front row of seats--it produces some awkwardly hilarious moments when latecomers are trying to duck and cover to their front-row seats. Being in Brooklyn, the ticket prices for shows are definitely more off off b'way, and perhaps even low enough for some manhattanites to take the 2/3 down past their comfort zone. read more

The programming is great but the set up of the theater is stressful. When we arrived about 20 minutes before showtime, the lobby was insanely crowded and confusing. There was a woman barking at us about where to stand for Will Call. It is set up in the most illogical way possible. You are in line waiting for a window to open up, but you cant really see the windows because there are so many people packed in. There may be signage, but its hard to see with people body to body. I recommend NOT getting seats in the Gallery. The gallery is so steep and the seats are on top of one another. My boyfriend is 6'3'' and basically had to manspread the whole time to actually fit his legs in the row and avoid hitting the people in front of us in the back of the head. I hope they didn't turn around and get a faceful of crotch. I am 5'2'' and I was not comfortable either. Squeezing past people already seated in the row (which can be like 15 people in) feels like a treacherous mountain climbing feat. Everyone around us seemed to feel the same way. We saw the Cherry Orchard and a lot of the play was in various parts of the ground floor - up the aisles etc. We couldn't see any of those parts. The building itself is old and interesting, which is probably why the seating is less than ideal. I will come back despite the discomfort since I like being artsy-fartsy but this isn't my favorite theater. And they don't serve any beverages or booze. It would have been nice to have a glass of wine before getting inadvertently groped by packed in strangers. read more

I was working here on a show. I'd say the worst part about the place was their stage union, which makes you hire like, 8 people to move a spotlight. Worse than the chicago unions. Other than that, this place is cool. It feels historic and artsy. During shows, there is artwork on display in the lobby. It makes merchandise set up difficult, but it provides entertainment to the audience. The elevators get really packed and it's slow getting around the theater. But the sound is pretty good, and the architecture is very pretty. Easily the best part of BAM is the smaller venue on the second floor, the 'jazz' club. read more

Not impressed at all. BAM is such a great place, but this theater? Not just no, but hell no. I have never been more umcomfortable in my life. First of all, how many flights of dangerously steep stairs do you have to climb before you get to the balcony?! (Yes, I realize it's an older theater so you just have to do it. Still...) And the seats. Seriously? I'm a big girl so sometimes I have to squeeze in to these NYC theater seats. Usually it's not a problem but these seats were the worst. Even my thin friend had to wiggle her way into the seat and we were all in pain throughout the course of an extremely long show. I will say the theater is quite lovely and we had a good view of the stage from our vantage point, but the show was ruined for me because my friends and I were so miserably uncomfortable. I will likely not be back to this venue. It will take something very enticing to get me there and I can't imagine what that could be. Thumbs down, BAM. read more

The space itself is beautiful, but the balcony seats are horrible. They are extremely small and have no cushion. Folding chairs are more comfortable. In fact we left during intermission because of the seats. Getting up to the balcony is another horror! You must climb three stories on very old, dangerously steep, continuous steps. Please do no reserve seats in the balcony if you are older or in poor health. It is just not safe. read more

... Yes, I'm still speechless over this theater, and I saw Macbeth back in MARCH. Ignoring the production of Macbeth (which, IMHO was better at this venue than on Broadway), the Harvey is A-FUCKING-MAZING. In all seriousness, they coulda put a dancing pile of steaming fresh manure on stage, and I still woulda loved this theatre. Why? -Legroom...very important when you're 5'11. -Assroom...very important when you've got a ghetto-booty AND are 5'11. -Decor...very intriguing; they stripped this old playhouse down to its bare foundation, and its gorgeous! Think peeling paint, rusting iron supports, decrepit interiors; it suited the setting and tone of Macbeth quite well. -Good seats...everywhere. Once again, this is subjective to this particular production, but we had 'second tier' seats all the way on the right, and yet our view was perfect via stadium-style seating; no obnoxious big-heads to block our sight-line. -Wheelchair friendly...very much so. You give me amazing intimacy as i feel the spray of spittle from your actors on my face. You always make me comfortable when it is warm you are cool (not cold.) I know that you're older than many of the others and i know that you've had some work done, but you don't hide it and in fact you revel in your age and distinct-ness and i love you for it.. The only thing that worries me about you is whether or not i could get away if i wanted to - you hold me and all the others in so tight that i it takes me 20 minutes to leave your embrace after an evening spent with you...god forbid our fire ever becomes real read more

I recently attended a music concert in the main theatre, which is large. We were a good ways back to the right, but were able to see the stage just fine. Not really a bad seat in the house - and even if they were poor I wouldn't complain since I got free tickets from a friend. The band was able to do a lot with the visuals on stage, which is a head not do to the theater. I wasn't expecting to be so thoroughly entertained. read more

Saw a movie here over the weekend.....What a disappointment! When I go to the movies, I fully expect a large group of teenagers texting, snaking, and talking through a movie. And where was the couple bringing a newborn in the middle of its naptime? If I'm going to see a Woody Allen movie, I need those blood-curdling cries to round out the experience. And don't even get me starting on how clean this place was! I actually had to PAY for popcorn and soda rather than just relying on there being enough spilled on the floor and seat to sustain me through the movie. read more

LOVE the space. Liked most of the staff. A SUCH a BRILLIANT performance!!!! My qualms are that the location simply isn't convenient to my location. Once I received directions from an usher at the main theater space....I found Harvey. Kind of neat that all the theaters are in different locals within the same proximity...but also somewhat inconvenient. My HUGE qualms are that I do not recall any obvious warning on the BAM site telling me that the seats I purchased we an obstructed view. Even had there been a warning, the availability they gave listed nearly the entire section as purchased. So there was no option at time of booking for better seating. When we arrived, half of the section was empty. No way in hell did that many people simply not show on a clear , precipitation-free night. Seriously no bueno. Fortunately, one of the better ushers was discretely listening to the conversation my guest and I were having about our extreme displeasure and plans to contact BAM for some sort of compensation for this booking site issue. Doubly fortunate was the piece being set up so that one of the performers was choosing audience members in the front upper orchestra row and "upgrading" them to orchestra seating. Our usher took this opportunity to acknowledge our displeasure and issue, and offer us the two seats which were now free. Couldn't thank him enough for the courtesy. Due to the inconvenient location (for me), I've always looked at BAM as a venue I'd only consider for a show/actor/director/choreographer/piece which I can't imagine missing. I was hoping this experience would change my mindset. Sadly, my experience with booking oversights has put said mindset much more firmly in place. read more

I was finally able to come check out BAM a year after hearing friends, neighbors, ducks, stray dogs, etc talk about how great the events are here. I went to check out the Poetry 2013 Game Changers performances. These poets were amazing! Shouts out to up and coming poet Ashley August and the veteran poets. Great selection of music before the show and during intermission. The price for the show was $15 bucks not bad at all. Totally worth the price. Getting our tickets and standing in line to be seated all went smoothly. The auditorium is spacious, great amount of seating and you have a good view of the stage no matter where you are seated, balcony or floor. I really wanted to chat with the host of the show to ask how I could get my college pal out here to perform. But the ushers were more like secret service agents and directed anyone that attempted to walk toward the stage out to the lobby. Understandable I guess, but slightly annoying. Standing ovation of course for a wonderful performace of the diary of a mad man. It is amazing to watch Geoffry Rush become more and more crazy as the play progresses! He's quite talanted. I had someone come up to me and ask if i wanted to sit closer...i was in orchestra s and she was in orchestra m! of course i'll inconvenience myself to move 10 rows closer to see the spit from Geoffry's mouth as he cavorts about the stage! so if you have not gone to the BAM theater it is beautiful!! not a bad seat really, but it has been beautifully restored! read more

This theatre is a design nut's dream. It was built in the 1920's in a most grandiose fashion and was eventually converted to a movie theatre and then boarded up and left for dead. It fell into a state of ruin, crumbling, flaking, peeling and disrepair. The theatre purchased it, retrofitted it, and left the corroded metal beams, destroyed columns, exposed brick and ruined frescoes for all to see. They added in clean, modern seating and signage and the result is a feeling of uber design with historical context. Saw The Merchant of Venice, set in a prison. Fascinating. read more

We really liked the shabby chic look, although perhaps this was an unfinished reno. The genuine Corinthian columns added a touch of Greek splendor. On our way to the gallery we passed by a stray mountain goat struggling to ascend. Once we reached the summit, we took out our abseiling gear and safely descended to our seats. Luckily we had packed our thermals. It's great that there is that hipster humility of sitting on hard bar stools, which makes the slight guilt-based bit-of-a-wanker theatre goer feel more humble. The Frost-Nixon guy was well good as Moses, but the daughter Cordelia was a bit nowhere. read more

Came here to see the suit. Although I'm not your theater kind of guy as they typically put me to sleep (and this was no exception), I definitely enjoyed this space. It's incredibly large for how small the place looks on the outside although the seating is a bit cramped. I particularly enjoyed the fact that they kept the old theater intact with its preserved decrepitude. read more

BAM Harvey Theatre - Performing Arts Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Opening night of the BAM Opera Festival = Amazing!! I had never been to the Harvey and truly, truly enjoyed the theater. It is very old, the age and history showing through rather than being hidden by coats of paint or modern design. It is absolutely a work of art unto itself and a must-see for any NYC theater lover. I would jump at the opportunity to return. PS: I deduct one star for the quality of the women's restrooms. A great, aesthetically pleasing venue like that should have nicer restrooms. read more
