Got me an Oski Bear cap! Go Bears! Allons-y ours! Vamos Los Osos!

Bancroft Clothing Company ("BCC")--I knew this establishment as McCalou's a thousand years ago. I recently discovered a friend of mine works here, and I was able to finally pay a visit while she was at work. She told me the store is still owned by the McCalou Family. The McCalou Family changed the name to Bancroft Clothing Store because a lot of their merchandise is Cal/UC Berkeley gear. And what an abundance of UC Berkeley and Cal gear they have here. Oh my! A whole lot more styles and designs than Cal Student Store. A lot more styles to choose from in the form of hats. T-shirts, sweatshirts, and accessories. For a lot more in terms of more designs and styles to choose from, Bancroft Clothing Company is the place to go to for supplemental UC Berkeley/Cal gear. I saw a lot of UC Berkeley and Cal T-shirts to boggle the mind. There is a whole wall devoted to those T-shirts. Wowza! I see they still have a Clinique cosmetics counter with the associate wearing the requisite uniform and metal Clinique "C." Still only carrying Clinique cosmetics. The windows are still the same. Just lined up with no space in-between the merchandise. Could use a makeover and some artistic insight. Never made it upstairs to the shoe department. NTS: they carry Vans, Chucks, Uggs, and TOMS. Must take a look up there since I practically live in Uggs, TOMS and Chucks these days. I was informed a while back that this is the place to get TOMS when I was scoping out UC. Berkeley. And many shoes on people's feet were TOMS and this is where they were procured. The store is still the same as I remember it, still dimly lit with a cave-like atmosphere. Not very warm and inviting for shopping. If the customer knows what they want and BCC has it, it is just best to get in, grab it, pay it, and go.

    My favorite Toms!

I've always liked Bancroft Clothing company. They have a good selection of Toms and great prices on clearance shoes. Quality good on the top floor. Clothing wise it can be a little hit or miss. You might find a great item that it appropriately priced, or a cute item that is over priced. It's a catch 22. I did visit recently though and got some Cal gear for my bf who was visiting with me. Reasonably prices tank top with the Cal Bear on it. They have a good selection of it too. Overall, it's not the best retail shop on the block but whenever I am on Telegraph I always find myself stopping in.

I actually really like this place. Yes the non-clearance items are overpriced but here are the reasons why I will continue to shop here: -clearance items go up to 70% off and if you dig around long enough you'll find a few stylish items -need Cal gear? This place has an abundance of t-shirts, hats and hoodies. They're reasonably priced too (~$20 or so) -they play awesome upbeat music -they have shoes! Expensive but there's always the sale rack -last but not least this is kind of the only place to buy clothing near campus so that might explain why I think so highly of this place

I've shopped here frequently over the years. About a year ago I bought a sterling silver ring here…read morewith a blue stone. Unfortunately, the stone turned into a greenish brown color. I stopped by today to ask about it and was prepared to simply buy a new ring-- it was fairly inexpensive. The store was empty, and there were two people working there who did not greet me when I walked in, as they were busy complaining loudly about someone. I stepped up to the counter, and despite the workers standing behind the counter, and one person looking at me directly, they still didn't greet me. At one point, one looked like she was coming toward me, looked me in the eye and then grabbed her beverage and turned away. Finally I asked directly for help. I showed her the ring and asked to look at the identical one behind the counter. She got very nervous and told me they hadn't seen a stone turn brown before. She immediately told me that she would not contact the company for me, that I needed to do it myself. I hadn't even asked her to. She kept saying things like "well if it had been two weeks we maybe could help you." to which I responded, "do you expect a ring to turn brown after 2 weeks?" She then said she couldn't contact the company because they would "ask her questions" she didn't know the answer to. I have no answers either why a stone would turn brown with occasional wear, no chemicals, etc. I would think they would want to talk to the company about this if they are selling jewelry that turns brown. Anyway, I was just really turned off by the fact that they had an empty store, but yet basically told me I had to contact the wholesale distributor myself. It really seemed like these two are doing everything they can to do the least work possible! I typically think a nice thing about shopping at a local boutique would be the customer service.. not here. I did not buy a new ring, and will not shop here again.

I texted her (due to COVID, still only by appointment) and she replied immediately and I visited that day! I described the event to her, the theme, who I would be meeting, what location it would be, and she totally ran with it and pulled some unique, brand-new couture dresses from Berlin to Tokyo. We were both excited it seemed, and in the end it was so hard to choose! This stuff is quality and comfy! Don't be afraid to tell her what you enjoy and don't enjoy about the dresses, Rana has plenty to choose from and knows what to do with that information. I eventually ended going with a comfy, flattering and elegant black dress that will last me forever. But a close second was a smoky pink feminine asymmetrical dress that made me look like a million dollars. I may be back to splurge on that dress too, as I'm sure I'd wear it plenty and by the 5th or 6th wear I will have already gotten my money's worth! (Rana also gave many tips on how to dress it up or down, style it a bunch of ways... the versatility makes this clothing so much more valuable.) Go ahead and treat yourself, everybody deserves a big girl dress in their closet. It's a huge difference from fast fashion and will probably last you 200x as long. The quality is incomparable. Thanks Rana, I'll see you next time!
