This is one of the places I would go shopping when I was at Berkeley. I didn't have a car yet I was able to bring home birthday and holiday presents. Incredibly rude security, one of the worst experiences I have had. Bought a Cal stuffed animal and the cashier forgot to take off one of the security tags so the tag beeped at the door. The security guard ran towards me on the street and then dragged me back to the store. First of all, he is wearing regular clothing (probably to blend in with customers) so I had this man snatching my bag after I was questioning whether he was security. I wanted to speak to the cashier since I still had my receipt but he proceeded to look through my bag saying "it doesn't matter" when I was telling him that he was being rude. He then finally saw that it was a store error and the cashier took off the other security tag. No one ever apologized. The security guard is this old white man, probably racially profiles customers as thieves or not. In his book, I had stolen and he disrespected me in more ways than one. Incredibly disappointed and will never be returning. Will be telling my other student friends to also not come. read more

This place is one of 3 good places to get Cal paraphernalia: Here, Futura and the UC Bookstore. While sometimes I can't tell what the buyer is thinking in terms of women's clothing, they usually have 1 or two cute things. They always have reefs which is essential as a student. Also, there is a clinique counter so I'm always there for the bonus days. All in all, it's pretty decent if you don't have a car and are in Berkeley. read more

This place is a great general clothing shop for students, especially Berkeley ones who don't have cars! Or for anyone in Berkeley in general that don't want to make the drive out to Emeryville. They have tons of shoes upstairs, a great selection of winter wear/jackets when its cold, cute over the knee socks, and sundresses/clubbing dresses/formal dresses. Most things aren't too expensive, but pricier than Forever 21. Sometimes the sale racks have good stuff that's cheaper, but I think its a little pricy for the quality of items they have. They've got a good selection of Cal gear with a good portion of it usually on sale, but that's not why you go here. You go because of all the OTHER clothes they have. Nice place! They sell a whole bunch of things from handbags, backpacks, to a variety of women's clothing (including some UCB stuff), shoes (upstairs), and make-up. I did see a lot of higher end brand names like free people and some other brands that I can't remmeber at the moment. Prices are steep (especially for a college student). I think the last time I'd come here was in 1997 and I swear it was the same layout in 2009 as it was then. Browsing for clothes is not unlike shopping at Walmart on Black Friday. Okay, it's not that bad (but only because nobody gets trampled to death here), but Paco Underhill just might have a stroke if he were to assess the buying experience here. Not much room between racks, seemingly no rhyme or reason as to why some clothes are adjacent to the others, and no real signage. It's imperative to bring plenty of patience, but there are some deals to be had here like my new $6.50 yellow Cal t-shirt that will be all the rage here in Philadelphia. Adam was literally the biggest sweetheart when I was trying on shoes even though I walked in the store 10 minutes before it closed. He not only made sure all of my questions were answered but he even offered to order any pair I wanted which was not available at this specific location. Usually when walking into any store at almost closing time you are constantly reminded that you only have ten minutes but this was not the case. I was very impressed and left with a pair of boots and a smile on my face. Go Adam, you babe!!!! So I have shopped at this store for 10 years. I have spent thousands of dollars here and regularly buy my Clinique products here each month totaling hundreds of dollars each time. Today I went in to return a pair of jeans. They refused to take them back and said that they had been warn (which they hadn't, other than to try on, sit, and walk around in at home while deciding) The manager was incredibly rude to me. I explained that they hadn't been warn other than to try on. She basically called me a liar. The woman at the Clinique counter vouched for me and said that I was a great and regular customer who spends a great deal of money there. Still the manager refused. I was clear with her that if she didn't take the $40 pants back ( I would have accepted store credit) that me and my patronage would never be back. She didn't care. I don't know what kind of customer service this is toward a loyal customer (not to mention the stupid financial decision she made) but I will NEVER ever be back! This store has everything but customer service. I went into the store with my 5 month old in a stroller. The section of the store that has kid clothing is up a few stairs. I looked for a ramp but didn't see one so I was forced to pick up her stroller, which usually isn't a big deal but that day I had a lot in the stroller plus a 14 pound baby. There was not one but TWO employees watch me pick the stroller up and walk up the stairs and down. What do people do in wheelchairs?! I could barely navigate a stroller in their overcrowded isles and in inconvenient stairs. When I was ready to check out there were two girls behind the counter that completely ignored me while they had their conversation. One girl finally sighed and said she help me. If you want over expensive clothes and horrible customer experience, this is the place. read more

I used to love this store until I realized the service that it provides. I bought a pair of pants, worn it ONLY during the fitting room, and decided that I don't like it. Well, they won't let me return those pants because "it's been worn." Huh, that makes a lot of sense. And there goes my $54. I asked the manager "isn't helping out a customer to the best interest of your store?" He shrugs and completely ignores that question with the answer "We have store policies." On terms of price it's about the same for any other store selling Cal apparel. However, the customer service is absolute shit. After browsing for sometime and discussing with some friends about not being able to find any crew necks in the store (or any good ones for that matter) I decided on two polo's, some miscellaneous items and called it quits. Now, being the only people in line all I got were a couple of glares from the same associate who was folding clothes earlier. The same associate who indefinitely overheard us talking about crew necks. Hell I didn't even know she worked there till she got to the register. Not only does she still have an attitude, I've managed to rack up $70 bucks here and I can't even get a thanks for shopping at ... or have a nice day. Literally, upon her placing all items in the bag and handing her back the merchant receipt, she move on to the next customer. If you have such a large stick up your ass or don't like dealing with the public maybe you should consider another job! Would I shop here again? Maybe. When I finally called to inquire I was told I'd have to order the item again and pay for expedited shipping to get it in time - no offer to comp the shipping or discount the item because it "wasn't their fault." They carry a lot of the nicer brands in the Juniors department here compared to the main store in Lafayette (McCaulou's), including Lacoste and Free People. Their sales racks are always stocked with great finds and they also have tons of shoes (every brand, color and style of canvas shoe that you can think of). The service and atmosphere here are a bit lacking though. read more

Imagine Volvom, the pinky toe of Levi's, Billabong, a Cal Fan store, a makeup counter, and Vans squashed under one roof. And there you have it- Bancroft Clothing Company. It's definitely and odd store- an oversized building that seems to enshrine Cal spirit and skater wear. That's great, but for a clothing store that takes up a good half of a block, that's a pretty niche field to specialize in. Not that they don't do that well. Take a stroll upstairs and you'll see the largest shoe collection in Berkeley. The only problem? You'll find 23457890 skater shoes, 45678 running shoes, and 2 dress shoes. This really boils down to BCC's biggest weakness. It's a super niche store that, for its size, really could use some artistic direction. For the love of God- the store is huge but you'll find the same style every which way you look- Oski fan gear and the stuff a slightly older Justin Bieber would probably be wearing. And they're good at that. But they're good at ONLY that. So there you have it- let's break it down. Looking for CAL gear? YES. Looking for cool skater chic because you're a college student now and wish you were cool in junior high but didn't get to and now want to give it a spin? YES. Looking for something any self-respecting person over 20 would wear out of the apartment? Head to Westfield or Union Square and get some adult clothes already. read more

I looked long and hard one weekend for a pair of Saucony Jazz shoes. Normally they are a woman's shoe, so it's hard to find a pair in my size (11.5 Mens). I called Bancroft Clothing Co and they had a pair in stock in my size, and offered to reserve it for me. I did just that, and it was easy to go in and get my shoes at a reasonable price. read more

Definitely has a very wide selection of Cal Gear, and a nice shoe department upstairs. It seems to be a store geared towards the students, considering the brands and styles they sell, but much of the clothing is very pricey, not at all what I expected going into what appears to be a discount-label store. I have to admit, I've found a decent number of deals in this store, but you really have to search to find something that is discounted (and actually worth buying). Also, they seem to be trying to push away the student customers that enter- they are very stringent on rules such as "no drinks inside" and "check your bags at the counter". I stepped into Bancroft Clothing Co. today just to take a look around, and walked out with a summer dress, two vests, a tank, a pair of leggings, and a hoodie. None of these items were over $16-- most of them were $8-10. You can skip their (expensive) new items in the front of the store; just take the time to sift through their sale racks in the back, and you can probably get lucky (like me!) and find yourself some gems. The staff were friendly and chill, unlike your typical Buffalo Exchange employees, who, in my experience, have been a little pretentious. read more

I was absolutely stunned when I discovered this store at my second semester at Cal. I had noticed it on a few occasions, but never bothered to go inside. Thankfully, I checked it out. This store has an absolutely AMAZING selection of all clothing, apparel, and shoes. First off, they have a massive selection of cal gear - better then any place I've seen, including the online store and the Cal store. Example: The Cal store had four versions of Berkeley tank tops, and they were sold out of every size aside from XL and XXL. Bancroft Clothing, meanwhile, had at least 15 different styles and colors, with every single size available!! On top of that, they have a very good selection of clothes (for men, i don't know about women's), including flannels, t-shirts (for a party, casual, or dressy), socks, boxars, tank tops, etc. Meanwhile, their shoe section includes all of the Vans, Nikes, and other shoes. It is essentially a perfect store to do shopping for a small item that you need. I needed a belt, and I didn''t know where to get one. Bancroft clothing had a good belt for 16 dollars. Their prices are reasonable, not extraordinarily cheap or expensive. Some specifics: Cal tank tops are 13.99 (compared to 13 at student store), sunglasses are (~10), flannels are (~30), etc. For a college budget, they are solid prices.
