My dog Peetie underwent a dental procedure where his pre-anesthetic bloodwork was manually entered into the system hours after the procedure was already finished, meaning his critical flagged abnormalities were completely ignored before going under. During anesthesia, his heart rate plummeted to a dangerously low 68 bpm, yet he was still extubated and sent home with zero post-op pain relief, causing severe post-surgical distress. To make matters worse, my cat Sophie also underwent a dental procedure with Dr. Murillo on this exact same date. She suffered a traumatic cardiac event under anesthesia, and I was not properly informed or referred to a specialist. Dr. Murillo's clinical oversight and handling of medical records raise massive safety questions for anyone trusting this hospital with their pets additionally I have discovered significant discrepancies in the care and records I have 3 active complaints against Banfield with the Veterinary Medical Board.Rge discrepancies are significant. This Banfield location is by far the worst I've visited. I called about two weeks ago to make an appointment because my usual location, Sand City, couldn't issue a travel certificate for my dog to go to Canada. The nurse scheduled me for a Thursday appointment, and I planned my day accordingly. However, I never received a confirmation email, nor did the appointment show up in the Banfield app. Concerned, I called an hour before my appointment since it was a 45-minute drive. The receptionist put me on hold for 25 minutes while I was already on my way to Salinas--only to hang up on me. When I called back, she immediately asked if she could put me on hold again. I said no, but she insisted it would be brief. After another 12 minutes, she finally answered and told me that there was no record of my appointment. At this point, I was beyond frustrated. I explained that I was already halfway there and needed to see the doctor. She said I might have to wait, which I was fine with. But as I got closer to the location, she called again to say the doctor couldn't see me that day. I asked when the next available appointment was, and she scheduled me for Saturday morning. On Saturday, I arrived at 10:45 AM. Typically, my dog's exam takes a couple of hours, so I waited in my car, making some necessary phone calls. They assured me they would call as soon as they saw Luna--but two hours passed with no update. When I went inside to ask, they said they would contact me soon. I didn't want to drive 50 miles back home just to return later, so I continued waiting. At 3:00 PM, a nurse finally called me, but instead of providing an update, he rudely questioned me about my dog's medication, almost as if he was confronting me. Now it's 3:25 PM, and I'm still waiting, wasting an entire day that I could have spent working on my projects. Beware....Banfield use to be a good place to take your pet. That is no longer true. Don't let them put your pet under to do any procedures. I took my cat to have his teeth cleaned, found he needed teeth pulled, but passed away later that day. When I brought him home he was unable to breath and later that evening passed away at Blue Pearl emergency hospital because he was full of fluid. Over the last year+, I have brought in 3 cats. One we found a home for and 2 that own us. The first few visits were for annual checkups and vaccinations. The experience was great, thorough, and most of all, my babies came home just as perky as they left. Their last vet vaccination visit prior to discovering Banfield was to a different clinic, and our cats came home slow, lethargic, and not eating. I angrily called that former vet because I thought they killed our cats. Banfield treated our babies with care, and for that, they have my vet loyalty. Our oldest cat had dental work done under anesthesia this week. Even with the drugs in his system, he came home a little slow, but eating and drinking. We took our kitten here for a check up and some vaccines. Our appointment was at 8:30am and she wasn't done until 12. Then, when they brought her out to us, she had pooped in her carrier. Our kitten has never had an accident in the entire month we have had her, not even the first day we brought her home from the shelter. They said it was probably from stress, but I can't imagine what could've been stressful enough to make that happen because she was fine the last time she got a vaccine from another place. So our carrier had to be thrown out. Then right when we got home, she ran to drink water and was drinking so much, so I don't think they gave her access to any water the entire time she was there either. Overall, I was very disappointed with the service I received and how badly they treated my kitten. Would not recommend to any pet parents that love their animal. read more

We have had nothing but great experiences at this Banfield! We've been here for veterinary services for the past year (Excellent) and the boarding since October. The staff is both competent and super kind. We have a senior dog that has struggled at other boarding facilities in the Monterey area but thrives here. They are flexible and attentive to pet needs. This clinic has provided me and my family with some of the WORST experiences of our lives. Our cat's health was on the decline for about a week and we took her to Banfield, the appointment set us back over $400 just for them to tell us she was in "pristine health", they then charged us an additional $50 for a device meant to reduce stress. We didnt want this device nor did we want to pay an additional $50 for it. Our cat's health continued to be on a less than positive trajectory and we took her to Banfield again; they charged us $500 and told us she was just stressed and we had nothing to worry about. These statements would be unearthed and proven to be lies, as for less than a week later, our cat passed away. I fail to see how ANY licensed vet could look at a cat who had patches of lost fur, lost 10lbs in less than a month, and was struggling walking straight and jumping and say they are in "pristine health". If your animal is in crisis or in need of a check-up, do NOT come to this clinic, they have proven to be negligent and show lack of concern for the animals involved. read more

Customer service, prices, communication, overall attitude. I've been going to this location since it was still Harden Ranch vet, when it turned into Banfield we stayed because of the convenience but this is the last year I'll be taking either of my dogs. Particularly, one of my dogs is somewhat reactive (we're working on her anxiety and fear, which is what causes her to react) and she hates the vet. Every single time I've taken her the staff has judged, looked down on her and seemed annoyed that she was there. I even heard the new vet that took over her care recently, yelling at my dog when she wasn't letting her examine her due to pain. I also pay the $90 a month membership they shove down your throat and I have to say, not worth it when you still have to pay out of pocket each visit. DONT take your pet here if you love them. Ive noticed this location is about SALES and PROFIT and unnecessary referrals to specialist, not about providing CARE to the animal. Today was the last straw for me and my two dogs. We will not be back. I have a four year old dog and a 6 month old puppy. Same breed. The puppy came home from breeder with goopy eyes. I reported this to the vet and asked her to take a look. I also mentioned that I noticed my four year old dog had one eye that was goopy at that point. The vets assessment was that both of my dogs have eyelashes growing in toward the globe of the eye, causing "mocos" in their eyes. I don't know why I accepted this assessment, especially since she was referring to their condition with a word in a language I don't speak, and since my four year old dog had never had goopy eyes before in his life. She referred my dogs to an ophthalmologist who I'm sure would have charged me a ton to remove the "hairs" that were supposedly irritating their eyes. I never took them there. A few weeks later, the puppy injured his toenail and needed it to be surgically removed. This was done well and he has healed up nicely but it did cost nearly $1000 even after my "discount". They did an X-ray of his foot and according to them found a hairline fracture of the affected toe. I've never seen the x ray. They tried to talk me into getting a follow up X-ray for his toe even though the vet admitted there was nothing she could do to heal a broken toe. Anyway, during this injury the puppy was put on clavamox to prevent infection of the toenail and guess WHAT? His eyes are perfectly clear now. Meanwhile my four year old dog now has two goopy eyes and is very uncomfortable. I called and explained the situation and asked for clavamox for my older dog. They said I had to bring him in. So I did, even though it's totally out of the way and I have to fight traffic with four kids just to get there. When I got there today it was just like every other time. Staff moving as SLOW as molasses. When we got checked in I CLEARLY asked "should I stick around or is it ok for me to leave?" I asked this because almost every time I bring my dogs here they call it a "drop off" appointment, but triage the dog at check in and then make me wait to discuss the exact same thing with a nurse or tech a few minutes later and then they usually send the dogs home after that. Today her response was the same as always "oh the nurse will want to talk to you and then based on what she says you can decide whether to stay or go". I said ok and sat down. My daughter played and I waited patiently. She saw me sitting there for at least a half hour. I don't even know how long I was sitting there because their clock is broken and I left my phone in the car since it was supposed to be a drop off. I had three other kids in the car waiting(teens) and other things to do. When I went up to the desk to ask when the nurse would be out to talk to me, this woman (long black hair in a ponytail and a mask on, with no customer service skills whatsoever) looked me dead in the eyes and said "who told you to wait?" when she knows she checked me in and told me to wait. I told her she did and then she just started lying and saying she told me the nurse would CALL me. As you can see, I wanted to leave, I asked about leaving, and was told not to, otherwise I would have left. Why would I sit there by choice after asking if I could leave? That's not logical. I didn't feel like Arguing with her because she clearly wasn't going to take responsibility for saying the wrong thing so I just said "fine, call me" and started walking out the door. She said under her breath "that's what I told you we were gonna do" and I responded "no. You didn't." And walked out. As I buckled my daughter into my car seat I realized that if the staff feel ok about lying and being rude to me, they probably treat my dog just as badly. I went in and asked for my dog to be brought out. The other woman at the desk (short with a black Bob haircut) asked why I wanted to leave and I told her. She apologized for the rude staff member and was shaking her head in annoyance at her. She went in the back and at least another five minutes passed. Then someone else entirely came out and gave me an update (Dr. Is in surgery. No one has looked at your dog. Do you still want us to look at your dog) that I didn't ask for and then asked if I still wanted my dog. I told her I had asked for my dog and I want him now. She went and got him and I left. There is a reason this location has ONE star rating. read more

If I could give this practice negative stars I would. We brought our dog in because she has been having periodic diarrhea and vomiting the last several months. When we got there they took her back and told us it would be a few hours. We never got to go back with her, never had a discussion with the doctor about what was going on with our dog. They called an hour later and said that they were doing a blood panel which would be $350 - at this point still have yet to talk to the doctor about what was going on, nor did they give us any options other than the blood panel that they already had underway. Several more hours go by and they call again and say they're doing another blood test and our total is now at $420. Another hour goes by, call again and she's ready to be picked up - all the tests came back normal and they suggested to change her food to a prescribed kibble they gave us, also gave us probiotic and a medication, bringing our total up to a whopping $650. All without consent to treatment. I have no idea if they even did these so called "tests" because they didn't allow us to go back with her and talk with the vet. They didn't guide us on how much of the new food to give her, if we should mix it in with her current food, or just go all in. No idea what the medication is for - if all her tests came back normal and she doesn't have anything wrong, then why do we need to give her medicine twice a day for a week??? Such a severe lack of communication and when we expressed our concerns to the staff, the lady got incredibly defensive and basically told us it is what it is and to pay the $650 that we never consented to. Awful practice that has no concern for clients, they're just there to take our money and run. Needless to say we are never coming back and I highly suggest if you're looking for a new vet, LOOK ELSEWHERE. read more

Our senior dog (almost 15 years old) has hip dysplasia and had an old ACL injury and we took him here for Physical Therapy. He wasn't walking well but after a few treatments in the water treadmill and laser therapy his 2 back legs are doing better so he can still get around. I think the PT he had extended the quality of his life. The two technicians are so knowledgeable and their dedication to the animals is wonderful. Thank you!! read more

Interesting - my review of this place killing my dog was Removed? Long story short. My English bulldog was left to die after a major operation. They tell you your dog is going to be watched and taken care of overnight after an operation/surgery - it turned out that's not what happened to my poor dog. All staff leave soon after closing time, leaving all the animals alone in their cages. My dog passed away overnight because of their negligence. Had I known she was going to be left alone i would have taken her home to look after. Instead she died alone in a cold cage! Well, our furbaby got sick so we made an appointment with them and they wouldn't get her in for five days. I boarded my dog overnight at Banfield in Salinas, CA. My dog is a high-strung German Shepard but is not aggressive or mean. He has never once shown any aggression towards another person or another animal. He goes to a different veterinary hospital, and they love him. NEVER once have they said he is aggressive. He has boarded at a different boarding facility and had zero issues. But at this place, they first called saying that he lunged at a kennel attendant. Then when I arrived, they told me he bit someone. I asked for calcification, and they said the kennel attendant had slobber on his chest? Was there an incident report? Are there pictures? Is there any documentation or is it all hersay? My daughter used to work at this boarding facility when she was younger, and she said that would have never happened. If a dog bit a kennel attendant, then there would have been proper documentation, and a manager would have called. Instead, I received multiple different stories from a receptionist and not the kennel attendant themselves. Then they fired him from ever boarding there. Additionally, when my dog came home, he IMMEDIATELY drank a gallon of water. When he comes home from the other boarding facility, he never acts like he was abused or that he is dying of thirst. I would HIGHLY recommend against ever going to this boarding facility. I don't know how they treat the animals but to make a dog who has never been aggressive, aggressive is questionable. They also required him to be on sedative to board. The inexperience staff and how they handled this situation makes the place a liability and I would NEVER board here again. read more

I was gassing my car and witnessed a dog being hit by another car on the street and the driver not stopping. I grabbed the dog off the road, put him in my car and took him to the closest pet hospital which was here. I went in and explained what had happened and that the dog appeared to have a broken back and was bleeding from his eyes and mouth and asked for help. The first response from the receptionist was "its going to be expensive". I managed to bite my tongue with that and asked her to just get a doctor. She came back saying the doctor was too busy and couldnt help. Another customer pointed out that there was a another vet just down the road (Northridge Veterinary Hospital) so I went there and they immediately stopped what they were doing, helped me carry the dog from my car and put the poor guy out of his misery. No mention of money or anything else they just wanted to help an animal in pain unlike the completely heartless and frankly disgusting staff at Banfield. If I was choosing somewhere to care for my pet it certainly wouldnt be here as they clearly have zero empathy for sick animals and are only motivated by money. Meanwhile there is a very caring and professIonal facility just 500yrds down the road. I am also agreeing with the previous comments. I used to love Harden Vet. My dog has been going there for 4.5 years and we have never been uncomfortable. That being said... I took my dog today because he has been licking his paws. He had this same problem last summer and the vet prescribed a spray that cost maybe $30. Easy. Today our appointment was at 4:30, we arrived at 4:15. Didn't get into a room until 5pm! The vet tech finally took us in and started listening to my dogs heart and she said "oh my, I think I hear a murmur!" Wtf! (He ended up being fine) the vet came in at 5:30 and after I said I didn't want heart worm/ flea and tick prevention because my dog was just there for his annual in March and we had the heart worm test done, she said "I can't let you leave without it, it's irresponsible". She bullied me into it. Long story short. My dog ended up getting 2 shots, something orally, 6 prescriptions including heart worm and flea/tick prevention, and something up his butt. $300 later, I am pissed. The tech had the nerve to say, "silver lining, without the wellness plan you'd be paying almost $600" new vet here I come. read more

Once sucked in if you choose to cancel you don't go through them they send you to another company that handles it. I called this Banfield location because Dr Rivera (who was AMAZING) had referred me to call to be placed on the waiting list for the Pet Cardiologist but I learned from the receptionist (not friendly or kind) that the pet cardiologist no longer visits. When I asked if I could speak to the Doctor on Duty for the day. The receptionist reply was "why"? I explain that as a optimum wellness plan member I would like to speak with the doctor on duty for suggestions/recommendations. The receptionist said I could not speak with the doctor since my pet had not been seen by the doctor on duty. Dr. Rivera was visiting from the Santa Cruz location and had seen my pet. The receptionist then went on to say that I should google for a cardiologist. I politely requested if I could leave my name and number to allow the doctor on duty to decide if they could call me. Unfortunately, I have not heard from the doctor so I am not sure if the receptionist decided not to pass on my message or the doctor decided not to call . I am so sadden to write suggest a negative review but I did not want this to happen to another pet owner seeking help for their pet. As a member for over 10 years this makes me want to cancel my plan. Note: I called every day for 5 days and left a message each time . So my husband and we're headed home and we where on a road that takes you to the 101 maybe 5 miles from 101 anyways a puppy on the side of the road caught my attention and I told my husband there a puppy or small dog on the road curled up and to stop , Husband says someone will stop and get it , WELL I looked behind and didn't see anyone break so about 3 miles into it my husband turned around because it was the right thing to do , so we headed back and of course no one stoped so we had a towel in the car and placed it in the back , then proceeded to google vet hospital and found one 12 miles out in Salinas called Banfield animal Hospital that was opened, my husband tried to get it there as fast as we could as it appeared to be in a lot of pain and we had no idea where this place was . We get there and go on first to explain what we found and they started off with , You will need to put $800 down and fill out paperwork , we explained we found this dog and we where not going to just leave on the side of the road , they continued to say they can't see the dog unless I give them my card . So my husband went out to the car and brought it in and they just stood there and then stated " oh this dog isn't stable we can give you a referral to a hospital " My husband " isn't this a hospital and then told them ya I'm going to leave the dog here on your counter and we walked away and left as he was becoming angry. Don't be a vet if you can't do the humane thing for fu....k sake . That Dr should be ashamed of themselves as the DR did come out and then walked back into a room .
