Dr. Carrie is a very special person with a very special calling. She came over last night to help us say goodbye to our OG family dog, Max. He lived to 17 years old, after being with us for 16 of those. Max's last moments were filled with affection, peace, pets, and KFC. He didn't feel a thing before he got drowsy and went to sleep happily licking fried chicken skin off our fingers. Even though dementia and physical wasting made his life very hard at the end, Max had the best final day we could have hoped for. After Max was completely sedated, the final medicine was administered behind a blanket to stop his heart (we didn't even see it). Carrie checked with a stethoscope and gently let us know his heart had stopped. Then she gave us privacy and space to say our final goodbyes, coming back in to get Max only when we were ready. She lovingly placed him on a white cloud (wrapped in a beautiful blanket in a carrying tray) to gently carry out. Every detail was dialed in, and so dignified, from start to finish. My husband and I, though sad today, feel really wonderful about doing this at home with Carrie. It was simply perfect. We feel so good that Max faced no stress or pain in his final moments, he was happy and calm as ever. What a gift we were able to give our little gentleman. We woke up Friday morning & knew it was time for our 16yr old terrier. Our regular vet was closing early, so I was desperately looking at yelp for options. I came Acrossed Dr. Nagel, and she was able to be there that night. If you go on her website, she explains all the steps she will perform during the procedure, so there won't be many questions when the time comes. She was very gentle with our Penny. Made sure to pet & love on her while everything was being put together. After the initial sedation shot was given, Dr. Nagel sat at her feet rubbing her feet. After about 10minutes, she stopped rubbing her feet & told us she was completely sedated, so would be starting the final process. It looked like she was just doing a soothing foot rub, but was also doing it to test for reaction to ensure she was sedated. She held the blanket up to her belly so my husband & I couldn't see the IV process. Our princess never let out a peep or a whimper. After about 15 seconds, she took a stethoscope out & pressed it against her chest. Told us softly her little heart had stopped & she'd go out to her car to give us space. Before leaving for the car, She bent down& kissed Penny on the head. Whispered something to her that was only between them. This may seem silly, but part of what made it Feel natural is not seeing all the medical supplies. We weren't watching her draw up drugs. She wasn't wearing gloves. Our 12 year old, sweet, flame point siamese kitty, Bleu, was diagnosed with kidney disease earlier this year. We tried every brand of renal support foods the vet recommended but he slowly lost weight. About a week ago, his behavior changed pretty radically. He started hiding in the closet, stopped eating much and drinking less and less. His blood test on Monday indicated he was in the later stages of kidney failure. We decided to not to try a lengthy, stressful procedure that (if it worked) would only give him a few days of relief. So, we kept him home, made him as comfortable as possible and tried to enjoy the short time we had left with him. Saturday it was clear me needed to find a vet who could do euthanasia here at home. Several vets recommended Carrie so we connected with her that evening. We were not sure if he was in pain and how soon we needed her to come. She did a phenomenal job of explaining what he was going through and offered to come over immediately (around midnight) if we wanted her to. In the end we decided to do it early the next morning but, Carrie told us to call at any hour if we needed her sooner! She arrived at the appointed time, answered all of our questions, explained exactly what she would be doing, and gave us as much time as we wanted to say goodbye before she sedated him. When it was over and we had time to reflect, we both agreed that Carrie was the perfect choice for us and for Bleu. She is extremely knowledgeable, VERY compassionate and considerate and is clearly an animal lover herself. She understood our grief and never made us feel uncomfortable.
