I have been coming here for all of my Chewie's life (7 years) and I've never had a problem. Dr.Drummond is great! As well as the receptionist and vet techs. All the staff is very friendly and I feel like they are always warm and loving to my fur baby. They always give a follow up call a few days after an appointment to make sure everything with your pet is going good. Prices are standard. We have been happy with our routine vet at Tyrone location though due to unforeseen circumstances another vet tended to a routine neuter and microchip. The microchip was found within Scooter's hair. Explanation from tech?- " must have come out the other end" -meaning from scapula to neck? Worrisome. Took Scooter home and later unwrapped tourniquet to find IV still in being place. We have taken our animals here for several years. We agreed to use their 'Wellness Plan' which allows them to deduct 42.95 each month from our checking account. Our dog is almost 18 years old. When we took her in for her annual they were unable to perform the majority of the services due to her advanced age. They could not anesthetize her so no dental cleaning was performed. The only thing she's received is her annual vaccines and a general exam which included a CBC. She is at the end of her life now, given that she's 17 years and 9 months old, That's extremely old for an Australian cattle dog. Last night she had a horrible night, Couldn't settle and peeing every hour on the hour. So we inquired about euthanasia services this morning only to be informed that it wasn't covered under the 'plan' and that we would have to pay out 180.00 plus tax for that service. Although we would have received an additional 30% discount via the plan. (That's only 36 dollars off the retail price. So it's pointless to allow them to deduct an additional 42.95 at the beginning of the month.) So I tried to cancel the wellness plan. To which I was given a run around. I had to call another number to cancel the plan. Called them and they tried to tell me that I would have to pay an additional 178.00 to cancel the plan! First off, I never agreed to a 'total yearly cost' that would be broken up into monthly payments. I even asked about that when we signed up for the plan since our dog is in advanced years and was assured that it was a month to month charge. Now that I am trying to cancel it they are acting as if this is some debt and they are trying to collect on a debt. They refused to cancel the plan unless I paid them the additional 178.00. I told them I never agreed to that, that I was assured it was month to month. They argued with me. I then pointed out that I never agreed to renew the plan after the initial year, that they automatically renewed it with out my consent. Then the dude said that when I took her in for her annual that I initialed to renew it?! NO! I did NOT! This is completely infuriating! Having to put your family pet of nearly 18 years down is already an emotional time. I couldn't believe that this creep was going to argue with me about canceling a useless wellness plan! He then tried to tell me that they had provided over 900 dollars worth of services so far this year and that the plan had only cost me 500. Which is NOT true at all! She's only gone in one time this whole year for her annual and they weren't able to provide the majority of those services due to her advanced age. They shouldn't be counting the 'potential' services available as actual services provided. Ridiculous! Outrageous! And very rude on top of all that! PetsMart Banfield has no integrity. Please do NOT buy the "Wellness Plan" they tout, Ive had multiple negative experiences at two locations. Two weeks ago I went in for my dogs shots, location on Ulmerton recommended Lyme prevention but it would need a booster in two weeks. I explained that my wellness plan was expiring and I wanted my pup covered from heart worm for 6 months (she gets a heart worm shot bc she throws up the monthly chewables) and updated Rabies. I was told my plan would not expire until the end of the month, but per the vet that there were too many shots to administer to the dog at once. Even though the dogs heartworm would expire I was told by the vet it's ok the dog should be ok for two weeks with no protection. Yes I had a family member with me that witnessed the entire visit heard the same thing. So after multiple assurances I would still be covered, I proceeded. Well I went in this morning for the Lyme booster (to complete the series) and for the heart worm shot and guess what my plan was no longer active. The receptionist told me that Lyme prevention didn't need a booster and then "corrected" herself that it was, staff kept us waiting for 15 mins before we walked out. Now my dog's heartworm expired two weeks ago. They lie to your face and waste your time. I had another near poisoning event with my dog which the vet at the other location at Gulf to Bay didn't help with either. Buyer beware time and money waster. 6-21-19: We have two America short hairs(8.5 years old) and a Spitz dog(7 years old). We have been going to Banfield Largo since they were born. When we first went to Banfield Dr. Thom Carlisle was their Chief of Staff with many decades of experience and we simply loved him. We pay for a Premium Wellness plan for all three animals. Over the years we started noticing a large turn over in staff and ended up with Dr. West as our primary Vet. She turned out to be completely irresponsible with a degree from Asia somewhere and virtually incompetent. One year she never did any blood work on our female cat! Certainly not someone to trust with a life. Dr. Carlisle returned and we thought all was well. A few months later, at 7.5 years old, our Spitz was diagnosed with late stage diabetes. So bad he was ketoacidosis in one month and totally blind in one week. After requesting his blood work ups, Banfield Largo never mentioned anything about his apparent declining condition to us even through his blood results clearly reflected his gradual decline! Shame on us for not paying closer attention. Luckily, and after nearly $12K in total emergency treatment costs, we saved his life and Dr. Baldwin removed his cataracts and saved his eyesight in one eye at Blue Pearl. Banfield Largo has a new COS Dr. Drummond. She seems to be competent but has inherited a clinic lacking experience and robust clinical protocols. They don't even take your animals out to potty during their stay and they defecate on themselves! Their latest Vet of the month Dr. Piete was educated in Granada and should never be trusted with your animal's health. She screwed up our dog's blood glucose curves twice, misdiagnosed our cats as having high grade murmurs and completely missed that our male cat required four teeth extractions despite paying to have his teeth cleaned every year. I simply don't think Banfield Largo has the proper equipment or properly educated people to take proper care of your animals. They farm out and refer you to 3rd party resources for most everything, so why use them? Your resulting out-of-pocket expense remains the same and with a private practice clinic, at least the Vet has his name on the door with some real skin in the game. Our new Vet at Pinellas Animal Hospital(PAH) heard no murmurs in either cats and used his xray machine to isolate our male cat's sad teeth. He had been suffering you're a long time!!! Our dog seems to have made it through the hardest part of his diabetes/glaucoma treatment and we are moving his care into the hands of PAH. PAH is an amazing facility and so is Blue Pearl. We are so fortunate to have them so close to home. The moral of the story is to trust but verify everything any vet does for your animal just like you would do for your own personal healthcare. Banfield as an organization is not capable of attracting, equipping or retaining great talent. Matter a fact, they are pretty much the bottom of the barrel and shame on us for not finding this out sooner. I personally research each of them and they are not qualified. Find a vet with his name on the practice and stick with him from the beginning. Educate yourself about your breeds and don't be afraid to ask stupid questions. At Banfield we thought we were paying for 'preventative care' but, it was a scary, expensive waste of money and almost killed our beloved furry friends. Shame on the Executives that own Banfield and the lack of a proper mission statement that is both enforced and constantly improved upon. They need to go on Undercover Boss and see for themselves. Not only are we very happy with their standard of pet care, email reminders, etc, etc, but the fact that our pets' records were seamless between KY and FL. I called to get a ballpark estimate on the cost of a visit and Xray in the worst case scenario that my dog needed one to confirm if he has pneumonia or kennel cough. Their response was the they wouldn't be able to give me an estimate until I was in the examining room and they had looked at my dog. Sounds a little fishy doesn't it? It's very unlikely that I would leave at that point if they quoted me for a $500 Xray if I've taken the time to bring my dog when he's not well. I was warned not to go here but my vet was closed. They took my cat in the back but I could see. They charged me $ 200. Give the cat a shot for a bladder infection. I never seen them do this nor preform a routine checkup. I also noticed they had the weight of the cat wrong which could have lead to the wrong doesage for the shot. When I told the tech I don't think you gave him the shot she said they did. I was complained to the front desk about the shot and office visit charge..nothing wad said or done. I called the next day to talk to them they just pussyfooted around. They called later to see how he was doing. That person didn't have any idea about my concerns. I took my new baby Dachshund here for his complimentary exam/consultation, and I really wanted to scope out Banfield to decide if I wanted to do their Wellness Plan or go elsewhere. The front desk, vet tech, and veterinarian were very friendly, but one small incident was a huge red flag. I gave the vet tech my puppy's vaccine records (that I've reviewed many times), and he says that my puppy is due for another round of shots TODAY. My puppy just received his most recent shots YESTERDAY and wasn't due another 3 weeks. Once I corrected him, the appointment moved forward and it was decent. Have been using Banfield for over 10 years and have been very satisfied with their services and though you may think that they are nickel and diming you with the prices just check the prices of the local vets in your area and always talk with your vet at Banfield. They are very caring and will accommodate most of your requests to the best of their ability. They are hard working people also so blast them if you are unhappy just approach them kindly and ask your questions and find different solutions if you can't afford the prescribed plan that they are proposing, trust me they will work with to provide the best care for you beloved pet. I took my dog in after calling and stating that my dog had problems with his rear end. The woman I spoke with told me that she believed his anal gland needed to be popped and it would only cost 23 dollars. I took him in and the whole place tried getting money out of me the entire time. They told me that my dog may have cancer and that he needed a sample from his butt. They didn't even bother taking his temperature. After they did the procedure the vet didn't even come in and talk to me. The tech brought my dog in, and told me to meet her up front. They gave me no home directions and just expected my poor dog to go home and suffer in his pain. The tech I had was completely rude and I will never go back there, nor do I suggest it to anyone else. A couple of friends had recommended Banfield to me because of their convenient payment contracts. I was skeptical after reading the reviews, but still took my new puppy there. The first visit was sketchy because I didn't like the way they took him in the back out of my sight, and they pretty much insisted on giving him a Benadryl shot prior to his vax because he's a chihuahua. He was really lethargic through the next day and very sore for a few days. When I took him back for his next round, I talked to the staff about them doing whatever they needed to for him in the room with me and skipping the Benadryl from now on and they have cheerfully accommodated my requests ever since. The staff has been very kind and caring with my dog, and very courteous to me. I have seen how some people have been borderline-abusive toward the staff, presumably in the interest of "looking out for their pet," which always amazes me how it's "okay" to run roughshod over and verbally assault another human being, but don't you dare let "Fluffy" feel the least bit uncomfortable with strangers attempting to perform some sort of medical procedure or evaluation. BOTTOM LINE - overall very positive experience and I have grown trust them with my fur-baby. When in doubt - ask, request, insist whatever you want but courtesy, kindness, and patience will get you much further than ranting and raving. Word to the wise - their Optimum Wellness Plan is a pretty good deal for basic vet care, but it is a contract that stays in place (monthly payments and all) for the entire year even if your pet dies, runs away, goes to live somewhere else, you are unhappy with their services, etc. - and it is NOT transferable. read more

I have been using Benfield Pet Hospital for years with all of my pets in various locations. At first I thought they were amazing and offered a great deal with the wellness plans and thought it was "cost effective" at the time and the staff was rather friendly. Over the years and changing of locations I have come to realize what a scam it is!!!! Especially at the Largo location. The staff is extremely unknowledgeable and unseasoned as well as rude. I was told there by one of the techs that my dog may need to be put down because of a possible spinal fracture and there was really no treatment for it (the doctor hadn't even seen her nor had they even taken X-rays yet) I cried for over an hour walking around Pets Mart to hear an answer on what was wrong with her. Come to find out she had a UTI and an infection in her tail!!!! Another time we took my male cat for a urinary blockage and was on the verge of death. They had him there giving him fluids and trying to unblock him. They never once fed him and when asked they said sorry we got busy!!!!!!! I called today to get a price on flea and heartworm medication and the girl that answered was rude and sounded as if I was a bother to her. Today was the final straw! I am a paying customer just like everyone else and between my pets I pay $125.00 a month for what I thought was good care!! I called Banfield and two of my plans were up for renewal which I WILL NOT be renewing and the other two are up in June. I will NEVER go to this hospital again after their plans are over and DO NOT recommend this facility!!! I think that Banfield in general has gotten way too commercialized and no longer treats your pet as an individual patient.
