My favorite part about being a customer at Banfield is calling them on a Saturday and explaining you think your dog is dying, hasn't eaten in days, is lethargic, smells like she has an infection in her mouth and begging for a same day appointment and being told there aren't any until the following Wednesday. And my second favorite part is calling the East Hanover Banfield for TWO HOURS hoping someone will pick up the phone (after the phones were turned off for the first hour they were open), and no one ever does - then leaving a message explaining you think your dog is dying and needs to get looked at, isn't eating, possibly has a really bad infection in their mouth and not getting a call back within the 24 hours that the answering machine says they will call back. Banfield is great if you don't need any immediate attention, aka a regular checkup. However, during an emergency, they are the absolute worst. The Drs themselves are great. The practice however lacks the empathy and diligence to get your dog looked at when they need it the most. Oh, and if your dog passes in the middle of the yearly membership, they make you pay for the full year, super classy. I'll be on my way once I pay for the full year membership and cancel. read more

My dog since 2-14 has been going to Banfield in Rockaway. Dr Burke was her usually vet unless she left and came back then it was a random vet as DrMcKinney usually was doing surgery. In Feb 2023 she had her reg appt in which Dr Burke still has the covid phobia n would not allow owner in room. they asked for a urine sample and never asked to do bloodwork. Dr Burke said she needed to go on kidney food as her urine was cloudy. I asked if my dog was dying and she said NO. 2 months later my Dog was peeing n pooping in my house n very thirsty and I called back but Dr Burke has left the practice yet again n they had no appts n closed now on Friday. that told me they could see Brandi in 2 weeks. I immediately called East Hanover Banfield n Dr Favey saw her asap thanks to Katie the receptionist. after bloodwork they told me my Brandi had diabetes not kidney issues. 10 days later I called back as Brandi was not eating and Dr Favey said take her too Eclipse who is wonderful and said Brandi had very bad diabetes and it would takes weeks to get her back to normal if they even could. Brandi passed away that night 4/21/23 at 930pm. Banfield seems to be a revolving door of vets so if you are going to use them - use East Hanover and Rockaway is horrific as the misdiagnosed my dog and not even a card saying I'm sorry but East Hanover did acknowledge her passing with only a one time visit. major issues / take your dog to eclipse ax everyone there was fabulous to Brandi n her last day on earth. read more

The point of Banfield wellness plans is to help people when they can't afford things at full price yet their prices are still atrocious even with that. Then when I write a complaint to the establishment, I get some sob story from the manager about her personal life and no help whatsoever. This place is absolutely horrible. I would never recommend this place to anyone even with a puppy. I started taking my dog to an actual veterinary hospital because I was tired of their bull $hit. First visit my vet got a sample of her pee with a syringe in .5 seconds. Banfield claimed they never could. He gave me meds to cure it but unfortunately because of the continuous FAILURES of Banfield, she permanently was in diapers because the infection that they never diagnosed and the crushed vertebrae that also led to severe hip displaysia, caused her to no longer be able to hold her pee. My new vet also only charged me $90 for two X-rays (which is where I found out about the crushed vertebra and hip displaysia) and the staff there was AMAZING with my girl. As of yesterday though after 12 years with my baby, her legs just couldn't do it anymore and she had to cross that rainbow bridge. I one hundred million percent BLAME Banfield in Rockaway for this. I am not a rich person. I am not made of money and Banfield was supposed to help people be able to afford things that they couldn't when it came to animal care which is the point behind the wellness plans. Missed diagnosed, overdose RX of Prednisone, horrible customer service, on one doctor, not open every day.

There aren't enough negative words I can say about this place. I was only 18 when I bought my first puppy, Zoe. I was stupid to not look up Banfield reviews beforehand, but I was shopping in Petsmart for supplies and with the Puppy Starter coupon guide, I saw a free check up for Banfield and decided to give it a try. Once I was there, I was pressured into buying the Wellness Plan even after I said no twice, they kept trying to push it on me and I caved. The staff and doctors seemed friendly enough and I was just trying to provide the best care for my pup. I started giving monthly payments of 41.95 and would take her once monthly for a standard check up. I started my plan in October of 2016 and May 2017 was the last payment they received from me. My dog was always a healthy girl, never had any issues until May when she was vomiting and having diarrhea. I called to bring her in on a Tuesday and they said that they were all booked up for the next couple days and the soonest they could see her was Friday. What kind of BS is that! I decided to book that appointment and Zoe got worse(duh) throughout the next couple of days. When Friday finally came I took Zoe in right in the morning and no other customers were there. The woman behind the counter said that they wanted me to leave her for the whole day and would call me when to come pick her up. Not only did I live about 30 minutes away but I was not about to leave her to sit in a cage all day when she was already so sick and upset for a check that shouldn't have been longer than an hour. They didn't even look at her before asking me to drop her off. Just assumed. I went back with her as she was given useless shots as if it were a standard checkup. When they told me I can leave because they are taking her in the back I said that I would stay and wait on the bench outside the office. I figured it would pressure them to work on her faster, considering literally I was the only person there and she was the only dog there. About an hour later the vet tech came out to inform me that they have to run tests that are not covered in my Wellness plan. I was angry but had to agree with it. I just wanted her to get better. Why am I paying monthly if I can't use services that are actually needed? They ran a couple tests and still had no idea what was wrong with her. Basically I paid over $300 for them to shrug their shoulders and tell me that it wasn't what they thought it was initially. Dr Burke then told me that for another $250 they can try a series of shots to see if that helps. At that point I had been there for 2.5 hours and my dog had had enough. I wasn't going to put her through anything else. As if every thing wasn't bad enough, Zoe was prescribed a STOOL SOFTENER to treat her VOMITING AND DIARRHEA. What???? When I questioned it, they gave me some odd explanation about how it's a reversal process and that it should ease her stomach. I was in shock at how dumb they could be. I took Zoe home and threw the medication away. I googled the situation and found that chicken and rice might help so I tried that, and it did. I healed my own freaking dog because the workers at Banfield were absolutely useless. And that's when I tried to cancel my Wellness Plan. I wasn't about to pay monthly for a bunch of idiots to take my money and not treat my pup when there was an actual issue. When trying to cancel, I found out that I was sucked into a whole year of a contract. There was no way to get out of it. I made sure to take cash out of my account so there was not enough for Banfield to get their greedy hands on. Now collections won't stop calling me for the $200 that I "owe". Good luck! You assholes won't see a penny. I knew that I couldn't be the only person with problems with Banfield so I looked on Consumer Affairs and found that the chain of vets holds a whopping one star rating average based on 1,698 reviews. I read through hundreds of horror stories about Banfield and their practices. People from all over the country saying that even when their pets DIED because of the mistreatment of Banfield doctors, they still had to pay monthly until their year contract was up! Banfield Pet Hospital - My sweet Zoe. - Veterinarians Near Me - Rockaway, New Jersey

We have been going to this location for almost 3 years now.. Our cat went for a dental cleaning with extractions and died shortly after taking him home. He was home for about 5 hours, the ER vet they gave us to call was located in Paramus which is 40 min from our home. He died in my arms while my husband was on the phone with the ER vet. The doctors were sympathetic and cremated him for free. Frankly, that does not make up for the loss we experienced. I would NOT recommend this Banfield to anyone. read more

This hospital is located inside of petsmart. The service is friendly and my dog & I have been here several times & has never been misdiagnosed. My one gripe is in the prices. I signed my dog up for the wellness plan it's 30 bucks a month and covers vet visits and shots. It doesn't include medicine which can be anywhere between 40-200 dollars. One time they prescribed an antidepressant for my dog because he gets scared of the vet. It was called trazodone, didn't even work. My dog is usually the happiest k-9 I know. Thinking about it now, giving out an antidepressant for a vet visit is basically the same as prescribing antipsychotic to a child for being afraid of the dentist. read more

I would put -0 run away from this place! I took my perfectly healthy dog last Wednesday for her seasonal allergy. They offered their wellness plan which I signed up to...as part of the plan vaccines are covered so the assistant suggested I get the rabies while we were there since my dogs rabies expires 8/27 + the allergies shot. The assistant came back with more than 2 shots, I asked why so many she said oh minus well give her the distemper (even though we didn't have her records other than rabies) I asked is it safe she said yea so I trusted them. My dog didn't want to go near them I've never seen her like that before. The same night she started convulsing we took her back again the next day, the vet said it must have been a reaction and put another shot of cortisone and something else for allergies, she was so down (a very active dog it was heart breaking) then at night she started convulsing again twice we took her to Eclipse where they diagnosed my dog wirh seizures and will have to be on meds for life. I have called and complain to Banfield they fact they don't even seem concern no one has yet reach out they gave me a case number and no one has contacted me yet. I was told this would be too priority and I'm still waiting. I called today and they told me to wait or send an email. This is beyond unacceptable, zero concern, and empathy. If something like this happens at my job the VP would have reached out to the affected person and offer all types of help and support. This is a horrible place please please I wishes I read the reviews my whole family does nothing but cry while adjusting to the new life of our now sick dog thanks to Banfield for ruining our life. I have been bringing my pets there for a few years. Last January I brought my 14 year old cat for a checkup. I was told everything was fine and she is healthy. In June, I brought her in as she was acting differently, not eating right and losing weight. They said she was healthy, just getting old. She had to be put down 2 weeks ago in November. We saw a new doctor (in the same practice) who reviewed the bloodwork done in January and said that all results pointed to kidney issues and she could have been helped. I tried to give them another chance. We adopted a new kitten and had an appt set for next week. I called today as he has been experiencing diarrhea and I am new to owning a kitten. I just wanted to talk to someone about things I can try to help him. They brushed me off and told me they are too busy and no one has time to talk to me until my appt next week. I took my dog with an ear infection and the vet said the inside of the ear was too hairy and will need to clean. He took the dog back for 5 minutes and charged me $80 for the cleaning. The entire visit ended costing me $190, with the medication being only $60. I joined the plan thinking I was going to save money, but they make up for it by overcharging for stuff like this. If I could give 0 stars for this review, I would. My 14 month old beagle was scheduled to get a canine flu booster vaccine today. Neither the tech or veterinarian bothered to look or read my dog's medical record and reason for visit. Instead, the vet administered 3 other vaccinations that were due next month. In addition, the tech and vet administered the INCORRECT dose of flea and tick medication. Based on her weight, our beagle would be underdosed. I will never again trust any vet here, hesitating with staff as well. The whole surgery and the way they handled my dog was wrong. They did not give him a cone leaving just after surgery. They had many chances to tell me to get one before I picked him up. They failed to do so, we left bleeding and was told its normal. I've never ever has such horrible customer service in my life. So I make my appointments one month in advance for my two dogs, Bug and Delilah for international health certificate. I ask them if they have all the paper work they need because I can print and bring if needed, they say no we got everything. (False advertising). Here's what they wrong on the first part. 1. I call repeatedly asking information and everytime I called everyone has different answers that did not match. 2. They didn't confirm my appointment so when I call them.. They tell me that I only booked one dog for the appointment. 3. Dr. Useless messes my paperwork 3 and then when I ask her to fix it, she sends a receptionist to say it's not her problem because corporate is there for a meeting and she's too busy sitting on her lazy bum. 4. They also did NOT have all the paperwork, thank goodness I brought multiple copies. So I essentially spent $500 for an incompetent vet to talk to me for 5 minutes and mess up all the paperwork.. Come one, doc! How hard is it to spend a few minutes longer making sure things are correctly done. And now I might not even taken dogs with me. read more

We moved from NY to NJ, and was taking our dog to the East Harlem locations. We liked it their. Dr. Burke was recommended by someone at the dog park, so we took our dog to her office. It was 35 minutes away from us, so out of the way, but the recommendation was so good, we tried it out. The place was empty both times, and we didn't have to wait too long. We went to the clinic twice, once when the dog needed a check up and once when he was sick. Both times we interacted with the support staff/nurses... but never with Dr. Burke. I found it so weird that she would never speak with us. The second time, the nurse released our dog, and when we asked about the 2-3 issues we came with, she went to speak with Dr. Burke, but Dr. Burke never came out to speak with us. Instead, we got, "everything is okay with your dog". It rubbed me the wrong way because in the other Banfield's we always spent some time with the doctor before and after. Not sure what is her deal, but two times is not a coincidence - it seems more like her style. With that said, we are looking for another Banfield that is a bit more closer to our house. I want to speak with the doctor to ask questions and make sure my dog is okay. read more

I have 2 dogs, a German Shepard and a Doodle. Both dogs have used Banfield as puppies (both still under 1.5 years old$. I pay the monthly fee for both dogs and honestly I have never had any issues using the facilities there. Always I'm greeted by the very friendly staff, and my favorite veterinarian Dr. Weagley !!! My shepherd is a very cautious anxious dog by nature and both my dogs enjoy the staff and Dr Weagley. I can't imagine the poor reviews, because all my questions are always answered and my dogs taken care of. I would never take my dogs any where else. read more

This place is a waste of time and money. I went there a few years ago because my cat was constipated and had a blockage. My cat stayed overnight and tests were done. It cost over $2000 and it was just a temporary fix for my cat. I had to go to another Vet, who basically did the same things that Banfield did, and it didn't even cost $800. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!!!!!! Where should I start...my oldest cat wasn't feeling too well one day, took him to the vet. The vet, he didn't even introduce himself, was very rude and didn't even want to look at my cat just gave me a list of the hospitals nearby and told me that my cat needed a catheter because his "kidney was the size of a balloon." Took him less than 5 min for him to misdiagnose my cat. Went to the hospital, spent $1,500, turns out my cat just needed to drink more water and all of his tests came out negative. Next time I came in, I pulled the receptionist aside and told her I didn't want him looking at my cat. She looked at me and whispered "good choice" and assigned me another vet. Not naming names. Second, when I first brought in my second kitten (little stray saved from the abandonment of his mother) I noticed something was off about him. He was shaking like crazy. Brought him in, asked what's going on and said he was fine. She then said he needed to be on kitten formula until he was 2years, um..what!? The second vet who looked at him diagnosed him with cerebellar hypoplasia. When I told her the other vet said he was fine, she said absolutely not and said that whoever didn't catch what he has is dumb. She then got mad at the vet who told me that he needed to be on formula. I'm pretty sure all the vets there got their licenses from a dumpster. Receptionists are very nice, no complaints there. Another time, I dropped off my cats and was not able to go in because of COVID-19. They said they will call me when they're ready for pickup, I was having trouble with my phone and told them to call the other number that I use. They then called my mothers phone and screamed at my mother saying, "if you don't pick up your cats we will leave them here overnight." and hung up. Definitely not professional, definitely wasn't funny. What is up with this staff? Every time my cats get their teeth cleaned as well, my cats would come out looking horrible. My pup had contagious intestinal parasites and they never told me, yet I looked over my paperwork AFTER I took my pup to a different Vet for a second opinion as to why his stool is lose and he seems to always be in pain! He said he tested positive to his fecal exam for parasites! Why didn't Banfield catch this and why did they include it in my paperwork stating that they gave me meds for my 8week old pup? We get there and the receptionist tells us that they called and left a message canceling our appt. The worst place I visited for my dog. This is our first time going here since we moved for parsippany to lake hopatcong, NJ. We were here last week for annual physical exam and yearly vaccination. They were out of one of the vaccination so they took us to come back to get that vaccination on the following week. When we come back today, they find out there are some ear infection and ask us if we want some medication for it. so we did get the medication and was charge $75. later on he took my dog inside for the vaccination , so we waited outside expecting they know what they are doing (expecting only 1 vaccination, and have record of it) when my dog came out and we were ready paid for the bill, the bill have 4 unauthorized vaccine/test charges. When my wife ask her to look at the bill to see what type of charges they were, the front desk said you can't look at the bill unless we paid, to me that is a totally " illegal practice" . So my wife end up paying the bill. When she got home, I looked at the bill myself and find out there were charges that was unauthorized by us and vaccine that was not necessary for my dog. So I call back to banfield hospital to see if i can resolve this matter, The rude doctor was saying there is nothing they can do, and said " your wife need to have a better communication with me" And i need to work on the communication with my wife...i was like .....WTF..what kind of doctor is that..abusing some unrelated matter to us..while we are talking about some unauthorized charges and the issue with seeing the bill before we pay...that was the main issue. She also say" you are lucky that your dog is here and find out there are infection, you should be happy with it" . Do not go to this place, they will not treat you and your dog with respect. They will charged you anything they can charge if you don't find out because you can't see the bill before we paid. Don't go. Avoid this place. Immediately upon walking in the exam room I noticed how dirty it was, it smelled awful and it was very cramped. The assistant walked in immediately began with the up-sale to the worthless plans. The doctor was unprofessional and downright rude. As far as the rating for the staff at Banfield in rock away I have been bringing my 2 cats to banfield since I got them. The vet tecs are sweet and caring where as with the vet that I had the not so pleasure of dealing with has hit a sore spot. I brought my cat to be neutered and I was told that there was an issue with fleas. This cat has had fleas since I got it. I have done MULTIPLE treatments and cleanings of my home and animal including the flea shampoo and combing. He only just got to size to do treatments and I was informed he was anemic. I started a diet to help combat the anemia but Dr Deborah Burke said combating the anemia is no use if you do not treat the fleas. I am in the process of getting more treatments for this cat and this doctor was trying to belittle me and my actions on trying to help my animal. I xm disgusted with the fact that she scoffed at me and showed poor professionalism by rolling her eyes at me. I am under the impression that doctor Burke has reported me to the aspca when I told her I am working on the issue. fleas don't just go away overnight yet when I was trying to explain my plan and actions I've taken I was met with eye rolling crossed arms and the attitude I didn't know what I was doing. I would not suggest this vet for your animals if you like all natural ways of keeping pests off your pets and if you are hesitant on putting chemicals on your pet. Literally in tears over this situation and doctor Burke could care less. read more

I cannot express how happy I am with this location and services that the staff at the Rockaway Banfield provide. I recently wrote a review that was just based on office visits. My 6 month old puppy just got spayed on Friday and they did an amazing job! Debbie was great when I dropped Lexi off assuring me that she was going to be okay and that Dr. Burke was a great Doctor. Dr. Burke called after surgery to let me know how it went and that I could pick Lexi up after 4:00 that day. When I went to pick her up there was at least 4 staff members standing up at the desk. They were all saying how great she was doing and how cute of a puppy she was. They have very compassionate people working there who you can tell love animals and want whats best for your pet. I feel totally confident trusting them with Lexi's care. I recommend them to everyone who asks if I know a good vet. read more

Well, the hospital is ok. Its a bit over priced but every other pet hospital around here is the same so.. But the major thing that annoyed me the most was that around February my dog, Rosie died. So we brought her to Banfield to get cremated, and the nurse at the front said we could get her paw prints and they would send in in the mail...well its July and we haven't gotten it. But other than that the hospital's fine. read more

Banfield came recommended by a family member so when we got our puppy last summer we decided to give them a try. At first, our visits went smoothly and we received friendly service and were overall happy. It wasn't until our puppy needed to be neutered that things took a very serious turn for the worst. The surgery was suppose to cost us around $300 because there was a testicle that hadn't dropped yet, and exploratory surgery needed to be done. When we picked up our puppy, he was wearing an oversized cone on his head and had trouble even lifting his head to look straight ahead. He also kept stepping on the cone and the situation was very obviously impractical. I mentioned this to the vet before leaving and I was told to do the best I could and that he would need to wear it for 10-14 days. When we got home, I noticed as I was looking at the incision that the actual stitches appeared to be loose. I mentioned this to my husband but we decided to just keep an eye on it. The next day it was very obvious as we were looking into our puppies crate that there was blood all over his belly and the crate bed. One of the stiches looked like it had either beome too loose or popped and there was a gaping hole in his belly. Frantic, we called banfield to get him in right away. They took him immediately and the solution was three staples to close the hole. Again, we took him home only to notice again the next night another hole had formed. Back to Banfield we went where we were told a second surgery would need to be done to redo the stitches. Each time we went and each task performed we paid full price for. After the second surgery, AGAIN a hole formed in the incision. At this point we had become so upset and frustrated, called Banfield and brought him back. The vet had said that again the surgery would need to be redone but we were also told that at this point going somewhere else with better products would probably be best. There was no way I going to allow them to cut my poor puppy open again anyway. He sat miserable in his cage for days while we tried to get him the proper treatment each time. After the fourth visit (third surgery recommendation) we brought him to another vet hospital. The vets there told us the wound was very infected at this point and another debridement and surgery would need to be performed. I would also like to add that the vets at Banfield never found his testicle and told us that after he healed, an ultrasound would need to be done to look for it. The type of bacteria infecting the wound (pseudomonas) is not one found in the normal flora of a dogs mouth and in the literature is said to be from contaminated medical equipment. At least I can say Banfield agreed to pay for this third surgery. After this one at the new vet the wound healed wonderfully and they gave him amazing care. They even said they found his missing testicle easily and that the previous surgeries were just not done properly. The total out of pocket expense was over $1000. We also found after bringing a second puppy to the new vet that Banfield missed Giardia, a very serious parasite that was causing her to smell and have terrible diarrhea. When I had brought up these symptoms at Bandfield we were told this was "normal" for puppies especially if food is being changed, which it wasn't. Needless to say after countless trips and a total of $1100 spent for our first puppy, we stuck with the new vet that we are very happy with. However, our puppies were on Banfield wellness plans that they are still refusing to cancel. We have been on the phone with numerous representatives and managers only for them to come to the decision that they just aren't going to "approve it" and that we still owe a total of over $500 for services that we received but hadn't yet paid for with the plan. I was really hoping they would do the right thing in this case and just let us cancel without additional charges and go our separate ways but they don't seem to really care that what we went through, with both of our dogs, was unacceptable, extreme, and put the health of each of them at great risk. I will never understand this but now since we have received our "final notice" before going to collections we must seek legal action or else my husbands credit will suffer. Unfortunately we are left with no other choice at this point. I will not be paying them another dollar, nor will I ever set foot in a Banfield ever again. I hope everyone reading this learns that the reason they give discounted care is because they offer sub standard service and use products that are not of the best quality. Please don't risk putting your animals through what my family had to go through! My puppy had to be crated for almost a month before all the surgeries were done and he was healed. Our perception is that they have no compassion for the care of your pet and that the only thing important to them is getting every dollar they can out of you. Stay away! read more

The front desk staff is TERRIBLE!!!!!!!! I have 4 dogs and every single time I go I ask what needs to be done to avoid constantly having to come back and they never seem to be able to tell me. So, I get what is due and then a few days later get a call that there is something else due. Even if I ask what is due, they forget half of what to look for so they forget to tell me. For example, I called just now because my dog's rabies expired (I found out from the town when I tried to re-license him). He was last there the day after Thanksgiving and at that time, they assured me nothing else would be due until June 2016. WRONG. Now I have to go back and I am getting fined from the town for letting his rabies expire. And I have to get in there immediately to avoid monthly late fees. So when I called just now to ask what else will be due in the near future, they gave me a short list, which did not include Lyme. I asked about the Lyme and guess what! It's due too! They also only have hours M-F 9-6 or W and Th until 7pm. No weekend vet. My favorite story though was when I was there with my one dog so made an apt for my other dog. Five minutes later (while I was still standing there) my cell phone rang. It was the woman with whom I made the apointment calling to confirm the apointment. She was standing right in front of me AND had literally just made the apt she was calling to confirm!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to like this place but they are so terrible that I think I am canceling my FOUR memberships. I doubt they will care. read more
