My traumatized tired kittens loving on each other.
    Tracy L.

If I could give zero stars I would!!! I took my 8 week old kittens for a well visit to get their first shots. It's what I asked for when I scheduled the appointment and once I arrived. The receptionist proceeds to give me all these other things the kittens could have done as well as options. I was told the Benadryl shot would help them if they have a reaction to their vaccinations and it's to be given prior. Loving my kittens I decided to allow it as a precaution. I took my kittens out their carrier at 2:34pm when the nurse came in to take them back for the Benadryl shot that was to be given 15 minutes prior to their vaccinations. That was the last time I saw my kittens until close to 5pm. Within 5 minutes of taking them back a nurse or whoever she was came to me to say there's been an emergency and asked if my kittens got into something toxic at home. In a shocked and surprised panic I told them no!! She asked if she could perform CPR on my boy kitten because he's had several seizures. At this point I'm dumbfounded and confused!! I asked how my female kitten was and she said she was ok. After quite sometime I asked the receptionist if they can bring me my female kitten as I waited for word about my male kitten. Another nurse came back to me to say they were monitoring my female kitten because she was shaking a little and they wanted to keep an eye on her and this entire time they kept saying the Benadryl doesn't do this and they kept insisting it was something they got into at home. They were both perfectly fine all day and until they took them from me at 2:34pm. I called my husband and he looked around house just looking for anything they could've gotten into and there was nothing!!!! Never once did the doctor apologize for what was going on or anything. Just kept insisting it wasn't the shot they gave them. Later I find out my female kitten actually started foaming at the mouth and was going into a seizure and they gave her an anti seizure shot!!! They NEVER said any of this in the beginning when telling me about my male kitten. At this point I'm furious!!!!!! No empathy, no apology and looked at me like I was stupid as I'm practically pissed off by their lack of compassion for the trauma my poor babies was going through. I left this vet seeing RED and immediately took them to Vet Emergency on H St NE and FINALLY received great care for my kittens. Their systems was flushed and it was confirmed it WAS in fact the Benadryl. I will NEVER recommend Banfield and had I known they had such terrible reviews I could've prevented the trauma they put my kittens and my family through. I will be filing a huge complaint!! They also lied on the paperwork I was finally given close to 5pm!!!! They stated my kitten had a seized prior to the Benadryl however on the last page it says vaccinations was postponed due to seizures AFTER diphenhydramine!! This vet is awful and the board will hear about this!!! The photo is of my babies at the. Vet Emergency last night!! They were shaking so bad when we got there. Hate is a strong word but I seriously hate Banfield!!!!!

Our puppy needed her second round of vaccines, and since we are relatively new to the city, this hospital seemed to be the most convenient. The walk was less than a mile and Luka didn't mind it at all! They have a vaccine package which included 6 different essential vaccines for the dog. We also opted to have a all cleaning done at the same time, because it'd a good idea to have this done every six months just like us humans. The facility is super modern and thankfully their air conditioning was functioning well. There weren't any furry creatures or their owners inside of the lobby when we got here, and that saved us a lot of drama for sure. Everyone who we interacted with behind the counter, and in the exam room was super dog friendly with Luka, and we had no issues at all.

2nd time they gave me the wrong invoice. Concerning how they mistreat clientele confidential information.

I love the doctors here and is the only reason I've continued to come here but the front desk guy is so rude and so unpleasant that I've considered multiple times to move vets. I probably will eventually because it's such a pain dealing with him. My most recent vet appointment, I came for a comprehensive exam but also asked for a pedicure for my dog and confirmed it multiple times, when I first made the appointment and when I dropped off my dog. When I picked him up, low and behold, no pedicure. I intentionally confirm with him multiple times because I know he's incompetent and he still messes up. I also came to pick up my dog and as I stood in front of the glass window, I tried calling but no one would pick up and waited for 30 minutes until another lady came to pick up another dog. I understand COVID has disrupted the flow of work but I've noticed his lack of competency just before COVID happened. His mess ups require so much time wasted not only for me to make frequent visits but I'm sure the doctors too seeing my dog so many times.

I have a big, sweet Saint Bernard that needed her annual vaccines this month. I've never been impressed with our vet, but stuck with them out of necessity until I discovered Banfield. It ain't easy to transport my 140lb angel outside of Adams Morgan. It's extremely clean and welcoming, to start. The front desk associates are beyond pleasant, totally efficient and very knowledgeable - something that I wasn't accustomed to. The vet tech, lovely Natalie, put me at ease immediately. She was incredibly professional, walking me through their wellness packages and answering all of my crazy dog mom questions. I had more trust and confidence in her + Dr. Malczyn within 5 minutes than I did over 1.5 years with our last vet. Other reviews here say that this place is intent on ripping people off - that's seriously inaccurate (trust me, no one is better candidate for getting overcharged than people with giant pure breds.)You must be confusing it with the other animal hospital in the neighborhood. This is an honest team that doesn't push anything unnecessary on you, and presents all of your options along with a recommendation. I'm so, so thrilled that I found them - and so is Ella.

I've been a client with several pups now for 15+ years, and in general we've had great experiences at Banfield in Reston and Adams Morgan. But Banfield's business practices around their wellness plans have really soured them for me as a company, and I doubt we'll be seeing them with future dogs despite the otherwise positive experiences with the Vet teams and staff. Unfortunately, reading other reviews leads me to understand that I'm not unique in this. I've had a pretty sick pup for about a year now, and my focus has been ensuring he's as comfortable and happy as he can be. He passed away early last week, just shy of his 18th birthday. I noticed today that our Wellness Plan had auto-renewed for another year literally the day after he passed away. I don't remember at any point agreeing to an auto-renewal, though it wouldn't surprise me if it's in the contract's fine print. Without a means of cancelling via their web portal, I called customer service where the service rep was unable to issue any refund. The fact that the plans auto-renew without client intervention is a pretty poor business choice. It's simple to renew at any visit to the pet hospital, or via the web portal. Having it auto-renew will only "catch" people in my position who end up having to pay for plans for pets who have either passed away, or have been lost or given away. The fact that I was charged and my plan renewed THE DAY AFTER my little guy moved on & nothing can be done is absurd. It's extremely bad luck, but also the result of a terrible business practice. This is a tough enough time without having to spend energy on this. Keep the money, and enjoy. I'll look forward to finding another vet when the time comes.

TL;DR: They, literally, watched my dog decline (and die the next day) in front of their eyes DURING our appointment and said "you'll have to make another appointment." So let's go back... We're new to the 'hood. We come in with our two fur babies for getting their shots updated. They actually muzzle Ozzie. Dear reader, he is 12 lbs and had 2 teeth. Even our cat just stands her ground and is all "yeah, ok." Big bark and, literally, no bite. He was terribly abused when we got him. And he's absolutely the sweetest thing. The one tech, literally, jumped up on the table to get away from him. And he didn't even approach her, he just barked. He's a traveler and we're movers. He's been to over 10 vets in different cities. This was the first time anyone had the audacity to muzzle him. There was no need. Huge red flag. (And has we tell this story to our neighbors, we hear "OMG, same thing here!" These are vets and techs who straight up do NOT like animals and do NOT know how to work with them.) So despite that first drama and red flag, we go back. Eddie is 14.5 yrs old and suddenly can't really walk well. We make an appointment and take him in. DURING the appointment he goes from walking in the door to his back legs, literally, no longer working. He couldn't stand, move, or anything. We're in tears. The vet says "Well, that's not the reason you made the appointment, so you'll need to make a new appointment." Uh, no, this was the reason. There's something happening. Welp, dear reader, he passed that weekend. We left this place and went immediately to VEG (the ER vet), who then sent us for an MRI in the middle of the night at a vet ER in Annapolis. The next morning, we got the call that a tumor was, very literally, breaking his back. The vet here gave him gabapentin and kicked us out. WHILE SHE, LITERALLY, WATCHED HIM GO FROM WALKING TO NOT BEING ABLE TO MOVE HIS BACK LEGS. What. The. Actual. Fuck. The people here do NOT care about your pets. Not in the slightest. They are rude. They are scared of the animals they claim to "treat." They are the worst. I cannot comprehend how they have good reviews. And yet, everyone we talk to in the neighborhood relays stories like ours. If you love your pet, do NOT take them here. Stay far far away. They are worthless and uncaring. Never in my life of 10+ different vets in different states have we ever encountered such "treatment."

Since I had a primary vet, there was no need for me to return on a regular basis but they left a good impression. Now, I have an elderly dog with a terminal condition and needed a hospital to visit for a non-critical emergency need. I had taken him to another hospital nearby the week prior, and they suggested I make the decision to put him down over the weekend despite the fact that he's eating, drinking, playing and sleeping as normal. They thought his nasal tumor growth had progressed enough to impact his quality of life. What they didn't catch was that his new, swelling over his eye was actually a huge abscess that then erupted two days after getting an injectable antibiotic. Quite frankly, it was disgusting and caught me way off guard but it also became immediately clear that once ruptured my dog's eye visibility resumed (despite a very messy process to recognize that.) To ensure that there wasn't any additional care needed for the abscess site, I set up an appointment here because I refused to go back to the other hospital. Luckily, from the moment I arrived I picked up on good vibes. The vet tech that I met with first had done a great job reviewing all of the notes and health history files I had sent over prior to the appointment so I pretty much only had to just confirmed the accuracy, Dr. Thomas Landes then came in and he was just wonderful. He was friendly and asked thoughtful questions to better understand the current state of affairs. I was appreciative how communicative he was throughout my dog's exam (commenting positively on things like my dog's strong heartbeat) and they proposed a game plan for next steps. They took him back, further took care of the abscess and gave me some instruction on how to manage the care at home. Honestly, it was just so refreshing to have a positive but realistic doctor that had a great understanding on my dog's life stage and was helpful in ensuring that my dog received care as well as maintains a high quality of life as long as possible. I wanted a place that was more of a locally-owned office, hoping it would result in more personalized care and attention. That has been the complete opposite of what I've experienced of this terrible operation. This is an office run by a father and son vet. Our first visit was with Dr. Jerrold Boone (the son) and my partner and I were slightly confused by his evaluation. During our first visit, he went off (without us prompting) on how he was not responsible for the death of a dog from nearby Life of Riley (a pet hotel, which is known for several dog deaths...Google it!). Apparently, they bring the dogs to this vet. Dr. Boone insisted he didn't kill any of them. Okay, we didn't think that. But maybe we should now? He also has incorrectly written up the dog's prescriptions, which is incredibly concerning as our dog has a number of health problems and needs his medication and accurate dosage. The next visit, we saw his father, Dr. James Boone. We surely thought he must be better. But in fact, he was even worse. Our dog had a growth on its body and we were wondering what it could be. He said it could be cancer. Or it might not be. It could be anything. Well, we were certainly glad we made that visit. He also got weirdly transfixed on a comment my partner made about the dog occasionally having an accident in the house, which then took up the majority of our visit. The final straw is the way we felt treated by the front desk. They often would pick up, then immediately put us on hold. They of course were never friendly, and sometimes would hang up before we could even ask them anything. On a recent call, I asked for the prescription to be refilled for my dog for a medication that was vital for his survival. I called it in that morning, and when I called back, they INSISTED that they called it in. I called my pharmacy, and they never got a call. I had to call the vet back again, and learned the reason it couldn't get filled was that the hospital tried to give a different pill size dosage. It's a discrepancy but they should have called me back. They knew this medication was vital and now it was the end of the day. The vet had to re-issue the prescription but by this point, my pharmacy was closed so I had to send it to the nearby CVS (not ideal, but whatever). I gave them the exact address, and went to the CVS pharmacy...waited in that line (we all know!) and when I got to the front, they actually didn't have the prescription. Where was it? At another CVS pharmacy over 5 miles away. I don't have a car in DC so I then had to get an Uber, just so I could get my dog's medication. This incompetency runs SO deep here. You've been warned. And I've now switched to another vet that is nowhere near me but was referred by another doctor. Here's hoping they are an improvement. Honestly, they couldn't be much worse.

Since the practice was sold, one change in particular has made things unnecessarily difficult: prescriptions for outside pharmacies can no longer be sent electronically. I confirmed with my pharmacist at Chewy that they are willing and able to receive electronic prescriptions, but District Vet will not send them. Instead, clients now have to request a written prescription and then coordinate getting it to the pharmacy themselves. In a time when digital prescribing is standard--and when people are already dealing with rising costs and busy schedules--this extra step feels avoidable and inconvenient. It's hard not to feel like this policy discourages clients from using more affordable or preferred outside pharmacy options. I understand that change is part of any business, but it's disappointing when those changes make things harder for long-time clients. I hope the practice reconsiders policies like this and continues to prioritize the convenience and trust of the pet owners who have supported them for years. Spread the word and provide District Vet your feedback on this change.
