This is a great little asian store for all your asian ingredient needs. It's a little down the road from Home Depot on Powell Ave. Its very clean and and has a feeling of calmness when you walk in. There's even a little sitting area in there. It has snacks, ramen, spices, frozen fish, cooking supplies, and fresh produce. The owner who was very friendly told me they get fresh produce every Thursday! And you know it's fresh because there's a little kitchen area where you can see them prep everything. There was a different mix of ramen here than at other asian stores so that was nice. Everything was very tidy, although a little hard to find what you're looking for as aisles aren't labeled. However, it's not a large space so it doesn't take long to find anything. I will definitely come back! read more

We visited the Bangkok Market in Nashville, TN. We went in and were impressed with the decor which was more tasteful than you would expect from an Asian food store. The selection was excellent with, it seems, anything and everything one could want. I am not Asian but my wife is. Frankly, I didn't know what most of the items were but I could tell that you could find just about anything you need. There was a room that had plenty of fresh veggies and freezers full of frozen fish and other meats like "chicken paws"...Yumm! You could also buy nik-naks like Buddhas and elephants. Even the bathroom was spotless and classy with granite countertop and marble floors. The staff was friendly and even stayed past closing for us to finish up our shopping. This is one of the best Asian markets I've been to! I know this may take away from the "authentic experience" aspect but the market is extremely clean and doesn't smell like most international markets smell. I am always eager for an international shopping experience and in many cases it's a full sensory experience but I really appreciate this particular market's cleanliness. Though it seems a bit small, they appeared to have most of the main things I'd need from a Chinese grocery. They have a large meat/seafood selection in the back as well as produce. They have a wide variety of noodles up front and those are always well priced and fun to try!! There are kitchen utensils and supplies, teas, spices, decorations, and even cold beverages up front. The lady working was extremely friendly too. It was a great experience and I'm looking forward to my next trip through Nashville so I can stop by! read more

After a recent trip to Thailand (#humblebrag) I was worried that my newly developed cooking skills from a Thai cooking class would go to waste since I wasn't confident that we had a good International Market that would provide the Thai ingredients I needed. Thanks to a helpful Yelp search (duh) I came across Bangkok Market and was blown away! First of all... it's CLEAN, organized, and there are no weird smells (just being real) like other International Markets. I immediately found two key ingredients that I need for curry and my new favorite dish...hot and sour spicy soup. But it didn't stop there. They had quality canned goods, sauces (some that I recognized from my cooking class), chopsticks, cooking utensils, snacks, and an entire section of fresh produce and frozen goodies in the back of the store! The lemongrass wasn't the freshest (however, I was cooking on a freaking farm in Thailand so I tried to give them a break) but they had Thai sweet basil, eggplants, all the ingredients I needed for my curry and soup. Also, limes were 4 for $1 which is an absolute bargain if you've been to Kroger lately. Just sayin'. On top of all those goodies, they also have a section with books and (I think) music and a little sitting area. Plus the staff is eager to help if you have questions and I may ask for some cooking tips next time! My dishes at home were *close* to what I created in Thailand, but not quite there yet. Bangkok Market is not large compared to some of the other area ethnic markets, but it makes up for it with specialization in Thai and Southeast Asian items. It's always clean, the staff is always friendly, and there are plenty of new (to me) things to try every time I visit. Some of the things I like to pick up here are: kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass, coconut milk (tom kha kai anyone?), mushrooms, gai lan, mangos, and frozen seafood. There is also a great selection of sauces, noodles, and other non-perishable staples that will be familiar to anyone who cooks Thai food or has been to Thailand. Finally, there is a selection of teas and kitchen items. Prices are OK, and most of the fresh produce is priced competitively even to larger ethnic grocers in the area. I'm a fan! read more

When i think of Asian markets, a powerful and overwhelming smell of rotting flesh usually comes to mind, but this place stands out as a quite lovely and non-smelly market! The unique products aside, this store looks and smells no different than any other grocery store. Their products are great and they have most everything other Asian markets have, except maybe less fresh food (meat and veggies). I was on the hunt for pekin duck, and found some here for $15. This is my favorite Thai market! I've been coming here for the past two or so years and it's consistently organized, clean, well-stocked and the prices are great! Last time I popped in here to gather ingredients for a batch of panaeng curry, I found everything I needed. I made some KICK ASS panaeng that night, thanks to great ingredients. Lets talk about how they have an entire back-section devoted to just noodles and an entire room full of fresh produce + frozen goods. Dang. I haven't explored the frozen items yet, so unfortunately I can't speak to that right now. I think my favorite part of international markets is the chance to educate myself on ingredients and preparation of a dish.This is why I love that they've got an assortment of Thai cookbooks to flip through and free photocopies of recipes to take home with you (in the back section by the noodles)! This store was a little tough to find, but totally worth looking for. I really liked how they set this place up. It's so different than all the other Asian grocery stores I have been to. They have this seating area where you could probably listen to music and watch videos. It's like there's a room or section or area for different things you want to buy. I ended up getting a floral hair piece clip that I was enamored by. We were talking with the owner's daughter as she was telling us where we could find the bulk of the Asian population in Nashville in the Berryhill neighborhood. read more

This is the StarBucks or the IKEA of all Small\Local South East Asian Stores. Like other reviewers, I was impressed with their cleanliness. Not many "Asian" stores take pride in their store's appearance. Bangkok Market is a hidden gem. I don't want to keep it a secret. The store is just down the road from the 100 Oaks area. If you go down Powell Avenue, it's the first right after the I65 on ramp. It's nestled in a business park. I had to drive a couple of times on Powell to see find it. Anyways I was amazed by the layout and the ambiance. The stored is laid out in areas of similar items. For example they have dried goods, fresh items, and even an area for noodles. Noodles do deserve their own location!? That's insane! As for the ambiance, they've got this media room. This is where you can sit and listen and/or watch Lao/Thai media. You just have to see it! I have pasted this store a million times but never stopped. I decided to stop with Tony on a saturday and I am glad I did. First impressions are always the best impressions. The store is clean, very clean !!! They had some lovely oriental music playing in the background, and I found this very soothing. The store was lovely and very organized. There is a section in the store that plays music and sells music with seating like a relaxation area. You can also buy cooking pots and pans and various utensils in the back section. There was also a selection of produce and frozen food products. Near the checkout area this lovely little older lady was cutting up some fruit that I had never seen in my life and she offered me a sample. I feel bad because I didn't get the name of the produce but it was so sweet. The outside had a prickly skin and looked weird to be truthful but inside was a clear like white color..sort of like a pear but a little more slimy and liquid juice..very juicy....but the taste was awesome with the texture of a plum when you bite into it. I love this fruit and when I go back I will buy more. I believe she said it was from Vietnam. She also will let you taste the produce before you buy it in case you have never had it before. I liked that !!! That is a nice buying solution when in doubt. I would definitely shop here again. The calming peaceful aspect alone is a great reason...I hope others like the shop and check it out. read more

Awesome small to small-medium market near 100 Oaks Mall with nonperishables, media, and decorations. A very impressive selection of items that hit the target in a small space. The selections of Curry based seasoning rivaled the mega International stores close by, yet the variety of sweets seemed quite extensive. Bought a few sugary items however, could have gone crazy. I have 2 boys!. The noodle/ramen/soba/udon selection was very good for the size of the market and they had a number of items I have not seen in Tennessee. We lived overseas a few times and one gets to know what to look for when shopping. Their prices are VERY VERY good. Even the "American" foods that you find in the stores. Some stores feel it is OK to increase the price because of convenience. I was impressed about the NON-increase in those items. Bought those too. That comes from just being frugal. I think my favorite finds were the fish sauce in tiny bottles. When I need fish sauce, I don't use a great deal, but I like different varieties in small bottles. Very cool as some are sweeter and some have more salt and some are more "fishy" taste. Also, they had another variety of Kit Kats. A bonus find for me. Did you know there are over 200 varieties of Kit Kats made since either 1990 or 2000? How many have you tried? I am up to 12. My favorite dumpling sauce was a cheaper, although I did not look for dumplings this visit. The TEA!!!!! Jasmin tea in a bag was less than 1 dollar for 20 bags. The loose tea per pound was 6 dollars. The Cafe Du Monde Coffee was about the same as other international markets. I bought all three. They had all the drinks that USED to be in the larger stores, but just are not easily found, Sour Sap juice, Basil seed with mint, pomegranate, the original, Coconut water---cheap, Lychee juice, lots of Duran offerings, I did not partake for obvious reasons, but maybe my taste buds have still not matured. It is a liquid heaven when you walk thru the door. There was Green Matcha tea at a reasonable price, however, I just stocked up but it was a FAIR price for the type of Match tea. The selection was limited. They had more Pokey green sticks than tea. Go figure. Walking thru the door, I spied Thai tea in a bottle. Thank you! Was just so thirsty and to see this just made me heart sing. Thai tea is a sweet concoction that should be had at least few times a year albeit the high-calorie count, but it is sooo good. Anyone who has had it knows it is tea sweetened (much like sweet tea) with a really great flavor of the tea. I never get past the taste of how strong the tea comes thru. Paid and drank and went around shopping. Another customer asked for Kaffir-- Lime leaves. The store jumped and went and found what they needed. Impressive. When I checked out, they took my bags much to my chagrin, as my car was loaded with lots of bags to Goodwill and I was thoroughly embarrassed. The nice gentleman was very kind in stating it was NOT that bad. I cringed. BUT with service like that, one feels pretty good about shopping at this place. Will be back as soon as I need more fluids, curry, and Ramen. See ya'll in a two maybe three weeks. Clean store, did not see dust anywhere. If you have been to some international stores, dust is a common denominator. Alright, there's a new guy in town when it comes to Southeastern Asian groceries. There are many things different about the Bangkok Market, compared to various Asian markets around Nashville (not to mention the USA). It's extremely clean, and I'd even go as far as to say beautifully designed. Word on the street is there was an interior designer involved in the creation of the Bangkok Market... I immediately noticed upon entering that something was missing from this Asian market, something prevalent in maybe any other Asian market you'll encounter. You know, the smell.. The smell of raw chicken and fish - not to be found at Bangkok. Why? Well owner, Pornchai, in our conversation stressed how important it is for the place not to smell, and so he doesn't plan on selling those items. Though there is an extremely diverse selection of frozen animal products in the produce section, including Asian whole fish and black chicken. Yes, BLACK chicken!! Did you know this even existed?? I was told it has a cleaner taste than the common yellow, and is most often used for medicinal purposes. I touched on my "conversation" with the owner. Well, it was more like a personalized tour of the entire store. Why I was so lucky to get this opportunity I have no idea, but Pornchai walked me through the whole store and described many of the items to me and went into detail about Thai cooking I'd never considered. I didn't know there are coconut milks with different fat percentages (and I'm not talking about what is known as "light coconut milk" - Pornchai laughed at my mention of "light' coconut milk!), the ones with lower percentages to be used for soups, and the ones with higher percentages to be used for thicker stronger curries and soups. And some even designated for desserts... In our conversation Pornchai stressed that many of the foods offered in the store are chemical and preservative-free, which seems to be an important point at the Market. I don't think I've ever seen coconut milk in small cans - cans which have just enough for a recipe, so you're not stuck with leftover coconut milk and no idea what to do with it. Bangkok Market has these. Also, I have never seen teeny cans of zillions of different curry pastes - only jars of red and green - but Bangkok Market has got ALL flavors ... and I was gifted with one of each to sample. Red, green, yellow, massaman, and panang. Holy HELL. It's gonna be a curry-eatin' year for me, which apparently has more health benefits than I knew - I was told that Thai and Indian people have a very low risk of Alzheimer's disease, and the proof seems to be in the curry (as opposed to the pudding). The first time I even noticed Bangkok Market existed was when I was driving to Home Depot, and just before making the right turn onto Powell Dr., I did a double take when I saw the Bangkok Market sign and said, "What the...?!" It's new and it's awesome; I just hope it lasts despite it's unassuming location. read more

Finally stopped in yesterday, beautifully clean and organised very well, someone knows about visual merchandising, unlike other Asian markets which tend to be a bit chaotic and smelly even though endearing. This is the Trader Joes of the Asian Markets with a reading lounge in the middle. Vaccum packed portion sized bass and tuna pleased me in the fish section, and the range of rice noodles, different shapes, was pleasing, more fresh veg would be nice, and finally found my favourite ginger tea and cold green tea. Four stars for the thoughtful creativity that abounds and for curating authentic produce and inventory to fit into this clean, lovely, well-organized shop. Shopping carts are available and a ramp makes it easy to take your groceries down to the car, but there's a surprise 4 inch drop to the asphalt, so pay attention. The parking lot is, like the store, compact, but there's more parking around the store. I had a tough time finding BM on my first run. If you're going north on 65, take the Armory Road exit, take an immediate right down to Powell, and at the bottom of the ramp, you'll have to come to a full stop. Bangkok Market is right in front of you, across Powell. Left and right. No cars? Dart across Powell. It's that easy. Look for the Ferguson bathroom fixtures company--BM is in the same location. Baseline: I'm no noob when it comes to Thai food, groceries, or produce. I lived in Thailand and Laos for over a decade and I grew up on a farm right here in Middle Tennessee growing asian herbs and vegetables for the local market. Unless I'm eating with family, I find it almost impossible to find good Thai or Lao food, so I learned to make it myself. I haven't taught myself to be okay with sub par Lao or Thai food yet, so I don't go to a lot of Thai restaurants---it's just despiriting. It's like trying to find that lovely light southern biscuit, but only getting hockey puck faux biscuits. After a while, you stop doing damage to your soul and just let your memories keep you sated. (I'm also a sucker for southern biscuits.) There are a number of asian grocers in the Murfreesboro and Nashville area--quite a striking number. And, most of them carry what I need to stock my pantry....and more. But, none combines Thai artistry, refinement, and thoughtfulness in the way Bangkok Market does in this petite, unlikely location. A Thai elephant sculpture stands at the front door and alongside it is a metal vase of green patina inspired by the frog drums of Laos and Vietnam. This set the tone for my shopping experience. I don't know if the floor layout was making the most of a former tenant's organization or if it was intentional. Whatever the origin, the effect is unusual and charming. The shop is organized into rooms that encircle a modern spic and span kitchen that tells me maybe there are cooking demonstrations to come? One room houses the upright freezers and the chest freezers. Instead of rummaging around in those chest freezers, let the owners help you find what you need. That same room houses the fresh produce: a nice, tight selection of herbs and vegetables, Thai basil, ka-yaeng (for black bamboo soup), bittermelon, eggplants (black and green), etc. Today, the ka-naa or Chinese broccoli was spectacular. Fat, firm stems and dark green leaves. Another room houses the noodles, a varied selection spanning clear mung bean vermicelli noodles (for kaeng jut) to rice stick noodles for Thai noodle soup (gwaey theow or pho), and rice wrappers for fresh spring rolls and some free copies of recipes you can take a long. This room is anchored by an ancient hand powered flour mill. The stone was smooth from hundreds of hands handling the mill and struck me as poignant. Maybe the overcast weather was getting to me. There is a sitting area with a t.v., hung with the flag of the former Royal Lao Kingdom--the Sang Sam Hua--the white three-headed elephant, along with movie videos, Thai language books, cook books, etc. The curry pastes, sauces, teas, and coffees all have their place in this cutest of grocery stores. The front window is lined with a lovely selection of noodle bowls, small clay pots and rice bowls. I've read several reviews about smells of asian grocery stores and how BM does't have it. If we're talking about the rank skanky smell of off fish that you get at K&S on Nolensville Road, that's definitely not what you'll find here. BM is redolent of an American floral scent. BM also avoids fresh fish, poultry, etc. I get it. In America, we don't expect to smell our foods in our grocery stores, which is actually pretty weird if you think about it. In Thailand and Laos, the food you get is generally minimally processed and fresh. You'll smell everything, from the coriander/cilantro, basil, to the freshly plucked poultry. That's what you'll experience in France, too. No way do you walk into a fromagerie and not get knocked over by the heady smell of a thousand cheeses. The smells of every country's cuisine are part of that country's textures for me. Having lived in Thailand, my nose searched for those familiar food odors and found them in the stacks of rice sacks, the jasmine scented soaps, the sulfury whiffs of garlic and onion and the aggressively sweet and oniony smell of the giant jack fruits straddling the wooden produce bins. It was all here, but fighting with the synthetic floral scent in the air. read more

This place is magical. It is chock full of all things you need to make great Thai food (and other Asian cuisines as well). The staff was super helpful, the produce seems incredibly fresh. The amount of different frozen fish is amazing... and so many awesome items that I loved when visiting Thailand years ago that are now going to be back in my kitchen (as I ran out of what I bought there years ago). Everything is fairly reasonably priced, so can't complain there. It's very clean and well stocked. There were a few things I couldn't find, but that could be more my lack of experience and ability to read the foreign languages than anything else. Bangkok Market has a small but well edited selection. Unlike other international markets in town it is clean, tidy, and DOESN'T SMELL! The woman at the store front (I assume the owner?) is very friendly and very proud of her selection. She will help you if you are looking for certain items and always push you to the fresh product (which she told me they get in twice per week). I recently picked up a Japanese Pear, Japanese Sweet Potatoes (biggest I've ever seen), a HUGE bag of bay leaves for $0.60 and several other bulk spices that were all under $1.00. I had never thought to look for spices there before but the prices couldn't be beat. This was only my second trip to BM based on it's locale (I work a stones throw from King Market, K&S, etc), but when I am in the area I plan to start going in a lot more often. read more

First of all, this store is CLEAN! Wow! Having an international market that is clean is a treat. Not only is it clean, but if has the "high end" feel that seems to be goal or groceries in Green Hills. It seems to me that while they have a variety of selections, most of the items are pretty straight forward instead of having too many options. One exception to this would be section where they offer the popular Thai Sriracha Chili Sauce. They were many from which to choose. The produce section is found when you go to the back of the store, turn left into a hallway, and turning to the right where you will find a back room that is clean and nicely lit with fresh produce and nice selection of frozen fish, noodles, and more. read more
