Banh Mi Cafe is a quaint little space that is sure to be a great addition to the area surrounding Gwinnett Place Mall. The staff is exceedingly pleasant and eager to explain any item on the menu. The Banh-Mi sandwiches are as good or better than any you will find along the fabled Buford Highway, and definitely seem to sport more meat and vegetable fillings than the typical Bu-Hi spot. Even if the sandwiches were the same mini amounts of meats we are used to, Banh Mi Cafe is the only shop that I know that offers extra meat on your sandwich (a la Subway) but for only $1 upcharge. Thats very reasonable for a sandwich that is already at a good price point. We tried the pho as well and it was very good, though Lee's Bakery seems to have a heartier beef flavor to the broth (and who knows why? is Lee's rocking the msg or something? just wondering...) My wife and I just came back from this little cafe nestled in the community of Gwinnett Place and here is our review. LOCATION: Banh Mi Cafe can be somewhat tricky to find. It is on Satellite Blvd with Pleasant Hill Road as its crossroad. It sits right behind Jared Galleria of Jewelry. It shares the same parking lot as DentFirst Dental Care. FOOD: This location specializes in two things: Pho and Banh Mi (Vietnamese Po-Boys). My wife ordered the bun vermicelli and I ordered the banh mi with pork. Both of our dishes were served in a timely manner and both cooked to near perfection. The banh mi was a hair over-toasted for my taste, yet, otherwise excellent. I also tried some of my wife's bun vermicelli and the flavor was just amazing! They also serve their own blend of hot sauce on the side. SERVICE: The server who waited on us was both polite and prompt. I have absolutely no complaints. CONCLUSION: Overall, it's a great place. Had the Coconut Thai bubble tea and two Banh mi sandwiches that was shared between my wife and I. The food was fresh and flavorful and I would say that there was plenty of food. Very cheap too! Our bill came to $10 for everything. Bubble tea had great flavor and the tapioca was freshly prepared so it did not stick together at all. The Banh mi sandwiches were perfectly toasted, evenly flavored, and had a nice amount of spice. I love spicy food, so those of you that prefer a mild flavor may want to request that ahead of time. The service was attentive, but we were the only ones in the place since we got there soon after they opened. It seems like they have surges of busy hours where the staff can get overwhelmed though- so don't hold me to that. . . Banh Mi Cafe probably serves the best banh mi sandwiches in the Duluth area. Their pork banh mi sandwiches are pretty good! The bread is crunchy just the way I like it. But I did wish that they gave more vegetables like the cilantro, jalapeno. etc. Lee's Bakery in Buford is better but it is a bit of a drive for me. I had their avocado spring rolls and thought they were very fresh and delicious. A more healthy alternative to egg rolls that I would recommend! Great food at very low prices! I love to go to this place for lunch. The banh mi are quality and they always give you plenty of meat. The bread is also quality and freshly made. If you get the springs rolls, their sauce sucks a little bit but I let it slide because the staff is very nice. I've came back to update this review because yelp makes you write too much but I like their sandwiches and staff a lot so I am willing to write some more. I usually get the combo or bbq pork banh mi and they are both very good. The food was just ok. From the bahn mi (pork & dac biet) to the rice dishes..they were just ok. The bbq pork was more dry and tough than what I'm used to having. I was disgusted when I step foot into Banh Mi Cafe for the first time this past weekend for lunch. No one was in the restaurant, not even a customer during lunch peak. The restaurant was dirty from table to floor, from the front of the space to the back. The floor was greasy. My chair slid on its own! The table was filthy. The sandwich counter was covered in clutter. Cardboard boxes everywhere, giant bins stacked on top of the counter. That's where they make the sandwiches. The lady who made my sandwich was talking on her cell phone in Vietnamese on speaker! She was loud and very unprofessional. I was disgusted. The health rating was no where in sight. I wonder why. I ordered the "dac biet" or special banh mi. It was packed with meat and carrots. The baguette was fresh, crispy and chewy but the overload of meat, carrots, pate and butter grossed me out. I felt like I was eating a fat man's sandwich. Although I ate it, I was more worried of getting food poisoning afterwards. I would recommend they clean up the restaurant. I am happy to have found a place in metro Atlanta where I can get vegan banh mi and fresh spring rolls! The menu does not specify what is in their fresh spring rolls, but when I asked they told me they could put whatever I wanted in them. I have tried them with both tofu and avocado and they are so good. I love the peanut dipping sauce served with them. The sandwiches are very inexpensive, large and tasty. My partner enjoys the pho, but I assume there is not a vegetarian option on that, so I can not speak to the tastiness of it. I don't know what to do with this place. The food is exceptional (when they get the order right), and the prices are excellent. However, this restaurant has two major issues. First, the location itself is a dive. I only do take out. However, the real issue affecting my score is that the owner (I think he's the owner) is so openly mean to his staff that my wife won't even come here anymore because he makes her feel so uncomfortable. We would come here 2-3 times a week if it weren't for the owner's attitude towards his workers. Come for the food, but leave with your order as soon as you can. read more

( $3 each ) She didn't tell me how long it would take so I came by 10 minutes later. Coming in I saw no customers. Just the workers all sitting and either eating or on their phone. That wasn't a problem to me, but no one acknowledged me as I walked in so I just looked like a lost puppy. FINALLY someone speaks up and asked me if this would be a table for 1. I paid, got my banh mi, and left. I don't usually check my bag but when I do, my order is almost always right. One time, this one time I didn't check and I AM MISSING MY 6TH banh mi. Are you serious? 2 dac biet and 3 chicken? Uh.. Where is my 3rd dac biet?! How do I call back when the line is always busy or no one answers? Nope. Not coming back. The banh mi itself was a disappointment. I couldn't eat my dac biet any longer. The daikons tasted as if they were old? It had that smell. I know that smell. Yuckk! There was not enough butter. The meat tasted like a card board box. The bread was also stale. My family, who eats regularly at different Vietnamese places, and I ate here for dinner on a rainy Sunday evening. Nothing like pho in the rain. We had a wide variety of dishes from the menu and recommended by the owner. My mom had the lemongrass chicken (not on the menu, but recommended by the every-so-friendly owner) - loved it, could not finish the overflowing plate. My husband had bbq pork in a noodle bowl with veggies. He loved the variety of veggies. My tween had a bbq pork sandwich, hold the jalapenos, please. She ate it all, even the veggies. The bread was spot on. I have pho. I loved their broth. The owner was very friendly and zealous. Some may be put off with this, but we found it welcoming. Ok seriously this was a great place!!! The food was authentic and delicious. The owner was courteous and extremely social. The cook was Vietnamese but the owner was American who had been around Vietnamese food for 20+ years, so he did a great job of explaining all the menu options. The cook did a even better job making them. For my fellow vegetarians try the Fried tofu with avocado Banh mi! It was amazing. Saucy and well made. Try the Avocado shake its GODLY! But be warned it's huge so it might be good to share it with someone. Best part was the owner really flexible and was talking about how he is attempting to integrate organic options into his menu. All the complimentary reviews led me here and I was not disappointed. We tried another area banh mi shop a few years back and weren't fans. Banh Mi Cafe, on the other hand, left a lasting impression. They have over 20 varieties of banh mi plus other non banh mi items. We stuck to sandwiches for our first-time order and enjoyed everything that we tried. Banh Mi Cafe is probably one of the best banh mi shops I've visited, tying with another fave, Da Kao in Vegas. In the DC area, banh mi shops struggle to get it all right. The bread is great, but then the fillings suck or vice versa. Banh Mi Cafe provides wonderful, crispy French bread and they load up on the fillings, very generous. And they have this magical orangey sauce that they slather all over the inside. And their deli meats and other toppings taste great. I tried nem nuong, dac biet, and ga nuong, and they all were so delicious and satisfying. I'm sad that I live a 9-hour drive away. Otherwise I'd be here at least once a week. When I'm in Duluth craving Vietnamese, I go to Bahn Mi Cafe. Their food is delicious, cheap, and generously portioned and the staff is always friendly and attentive. The sandwiches are cheap and filling, 10 dollars will take you a long way here, and they've got I think a 6 for 5 deal which is helpful if you're buying for a crowd, which I have, multiple times. The pho is delicious, easily in my Atlanta top 3, and the sides and drinks are always fresh and delicious. My particular favorite are their tiny cha gio, an order of which nabs you 6 or 8 I think- their dipping sauce is wonderful. I've come here with my friends at least a dozen times and they all love it. There's one downside as noted by other reviewers- they often run out of enough bread to make bahn mi, so if you go there late in the day itching for one you might be out of luck. We stopped in here for banh mi, but when I saw that they also had pho I decided to go for that. Our server described the beef in the pho tai as being very rare but cooked from the heat of the soup, which sounded wonderful, but the meat was actually rather gray and chewy. The broth was very tasty, and I enjoyed the meal, but I don't think the steak was adding anything at all to the dish. We also had spring rolls because my lady friend only ordered a banh mi, and the veggies tasted very fresh and crisp. Banh Mi Cafe is located in a small retail strip plaza on Satellite Blvd sort of across the street from QT. It is located just off of Pleasant Hill Rd near Gwinnett Place Mall. It occupies the corner retail space of a strip mall right next to an Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I had been to the service department of the car dealerhip I purchased my vehicle at getting an oil change (located nearby). My original plan had been to get a baguette sandwich at Geirgia French Bakery (which ended up being closed that day). But I saw that Bahn Mi Café was open and buzzing with activity (always a good sign). Bahn Mi Café is a smallish, quiet, and casual restaurant that serves more than just bahn mi (Vietnamese sandwiches). The restaurant actually has a well-rounded menu of various Vietnamese cuisine (Read Daniel B's review). Everything is affordably priced. There are over a dozen varieties of banh mi, most at $3 per sandwich. Like other banh mi shops, the more you buy, the more you save. I forget exactly what the deal is, but it's one of those "buy X amount of sandwiches and get one free." There are over a half dozen types of pho and you can add additional meats to your pho at $1 per meat. Other entrees cost about $7-8 each. I tried both the bahn mi (BBQ pork) and pho (#1 with everything). Both were very good. Banh mis are made from French baguette bread and include meat(s), mayo, pate, shredded carrots and daikon radish, cilantro, sliced cucumber, and slices of jalapeno. Bahn Mi Cafe's bahn mi sandwich has Frech baguette bread unlike the others; I don't know how to describe it but it seems fresher than that of other similar banh mi places. The banh mi veggies are sufficiently fresh and the ingredient proportions are good. The pho I ordered (#1) had with eye round steak, flank, tendon, brisket, and tripe. Pho sides include culantro, basil, bean sprouts, and lime. The accompaniment of herbs are fresh. The restaurant is small, the decor is simple, and the atmosphere is laid back. I think this place could do a lot better job of wiping down tables (they were sticky) as well as cleaning the condiment bottles . The servers are nice and polite; the food comes out from the kitchen fast. The owner is a big talkative American guy (self professed "Georgia Redneck") and you'll probably see him (or at least hear him talking away) on your visit. He does a little bit of everything - taking orders, working in the kitchen, and ringing up tabs at the register. He does occasionally try to upsell menu items (he tried to get me to order spring rolls after I had eaten a banh mi and a small pho). I think he is married to one of the Vietnamese women who works there. Perhaps really deserves 3.5 stars. but I will round up to 4 rather than down to 3. read more

A decent and local place to get banh mi at a good price. I really like the variety of banh mis. My favourite is the bbq pork with scrambled egg and avocado. My go to sandwich. The only thing that really bugs me about this place is the lack of customer service. I've called in to the place several times for a to-go order. And its always a viet lady that answers the phone. Her english and manners are terrible. She's really curt on the phone and just hangs up after I tell her my order. From my experience, she messes up the order at least 3 out of the 5 times I call in. The banh mi was old, chewy and hard in the mornings. Possibly due to them re-using the banh mi for the next day. So if you have to visit this place just make sure you go in the late afternoon or evening to get fresher banh mi. The plus side is they accept credit cards. We ordered several Bahn Mi sandwiches. They were quite yummy/tasty. I would suggest reviewing the meat options since there are several. We asked for traditional. This came with pork lunch meat - would have preferred sliced pork. My son had a beef pho and recommends it. Had the shrimp Pho, it was Excellent. Came back for the sub sandwiches a few days later. Each sub costs around $3 and was such a nice change from the run of the mill subway subs. I tried both shrimp subs, they were good, but I think the chicken and steak subs were my fav. I didn't like the meatloaf sub or the avacado sub very much, but the chicken and steak subs more than made up for them. The subs have an asian flair with great veggies on every one. The only thing I would change is that I wish they would offer them on some kind of whole grain bread, the white bread sub roll is ok for 1 sandwich but after that you need some fiber. The food was so-so but the service is what gets me. They aren't rude per-say but they aren't friendly either. I always order to go and come 20 minutes later but I'm still waiting and I'm watching my banh mi's being made as I'm waiting. The place is always empty so I'm not sure why it isn't made.
