    The pre-filter for primary sediment
    John S.

Live in Keahou area. Our water is good but, is groundwater, treated with chlorine, travels through steel mainlines, stored in steel reservoirs (not coated). So, I decided on an ISpring 3-stage filter for Iron, Maganese, Chlorine, and other secondary particulates. BARACK PLUMBING was responsive to my call, provided a reasonable quote, stuck to their scheduled install date, and did a professional job. I appreciated their solid copper plumbing, use of SS ball valves, and clean/courteous approach. They did a great job in a short time frame. If you're thinking of a multistage filter on the Island, I suggest the Ispring Heavy duty, not available in local stores. It is much larger and will run longer before needing a filter change (equals savings). I bought mine from Amazon and also purchased a pre-filter for sediment. The pre filter has a discharge port for simple flushing, and will help extend the life of the more expensive filters.

We've used their service a few times, but we probably won't use them again. Here's our experience: First: We scheduled their first service because of their relatively good reviews. The task was to replace a few angle stops, and the technician assigned was Terry. Although we had some communication issues initially, I believe he was overall a good and honest guy who tried his best to address any problems that arose. Second: We hired them again to replace a dishwasher. Cory Barack came in person and told us he had fired Terry, which is a bit of a surprise. Unfortunately, the new dishwasher didn't fit under our countertop, so we ended up reinstalling the old one. We have nothing to say as we didn't do enough due diligence. Third: This was by far the worst. A new technician (I can't recall his name) came to investigate an issue with a bath faucet. He arrived 53 minutes late, was very rude, and did not remove his shoes. We explicitly asked him not to break anything since we had guests arriving soon, but he still managed to cause damage. Initially, the faucet had hot water but difficulty adjusting the temperature; after his "investigation," there was no hot water at all. Then he told us to reschedule the service as he didn't have time to get the parts because he had other jobs to do that afternoon. We asked him to restore the original setup, but he claimed he didn't know how to restore the hot water with the old parts. I tried calling Barack six times, but he didn't answer. When I messaged him, I only received useless responses. Left with no choice, I pushed very hard and ended up paying emergency rates to get the issue resolved by the end of the day. I feel scammed because I was charged $125 for parts that cost less than $50 on the market and $225 for labor to replace a single valve. After all, there's no emergency before the "investigation". With all the chaos above, I wish Barack could scale down their business, and refocus to improve ethics and building a strong team. They can't handle all the requests they've accepted obviously! To other potential customers: only use their service if Cory personally will come. I admit he's good technician himself.

Completed walk in shower alcove with ADA fixtures.

We needed walk-in shower for mother in law who had difficulty accessing her shower tub combo. Cory was responsive, thoughtful, and reasonable. He suggested local "in stock" fixtures. He accommodated our project completion dates and cleaned up very nicely. From demolition to finishing paint Cory takes pride and knows the business.

Our new shower from Barack Plumbing. This replaced a 25 year old ugly broken jacuzzi tub/shower.

Nathan showed up and he was nice and went out of his way to try and get the thing working. This was just to be an appt for an "estimate" but he still tried his best to get this water heater working. No go, it needed all new insides in spite of being brand new. Which were under warranty and shipped to me the following week. He told me the next visit should be around $185. and I was fine with that. The next day I got an email from Steve's stating that the "next visit would be $382. for whatever reason they came back for." This was upsetting as I didn't think I was covered for "labor" under the mfgrs warranty and would have to pay it out of pocket and it was a financial hardship. Almost 80 and existing only on a very meagre SS income. Emailed Steve's to ask why it was so high; no one responded. Then someone emailed after that to ask "how the service went?" and I asked the same question again, about why the estimate almost doubled in price? And again I got no response! When a business ghosts you it's not a good sign. There is clearly room for improvement in the area of communications. I was ready to look for a different plumber when by sheer luck I met someone who knew the manager of their Kona office. This person talked to the manager and explained my situation; the next thing I knew was that Nathan called out of the blue and offered to come back over immediately and install the new parts to get the heater working. He came right over, did the work and didn't mention a thing about money. I was thrilled and willing to pay the $185. he had originally quoted me but he said "no, not necessary" and left!! In the meantime I had found out that I did have labor coverage on the water heater's warranty. I emailed Steve's and reminded them about labor being covered and asked them to please get their money from AO Smith, the manufacturer. I hope they did since they deserve to be paid for their time and work. I was not looking for free work! I would definitely use them again and I would also request Nathan if possible. I must have called at least 4 or 5 other plumbers and only one responded saying he was booked up for the next 6 weeks. Such is life in Hawaii. If I hadn't have met this person who knew the manager this might have been a completely different story...

I asked if they'd recommend any one and they suggested I called these guys. BEST CALL EVER! They came over in a day and started working immediately and even guided me on the best options. Never once did I feel I was being taken advantage of. The plumber, Larry, was really amazing and through and explained everything in detail. I was out of town and he was helping us from afar. Larry was really great and worked hard on our issue. He communicated very well and even told me if he continued that day it would go into overtime and cost me more. He gave me the option to have him continue or to come back on Monday. He came back and finished the job with a helper who's name I ever got, but they both did a great job! It was fast and well done and even came in costing less than we had thought! It's been a looooong time since I worked with any company that had this level of communication and customer service. As a first time home owner and this being our first major repair, I don't think I could have found anyone that would have treated us better or helped us so patiently! Larry is a big asset to this company. I highly recommend PSI to anyone!!! Even from the office staff... Heather I believe her name was... just amazing and helpful! My mahalos to everyone here

Follow-up work (faucet replacement and shutoff valve replacements) had to wait for a building-wide water shutoff. When I learned on Jan 23 that a shutoff had been scheduled for Jan 31 (a limited, 3-hour window that happens maybe a few times a year), I contacted Drain Man immediately--speaking with the office manager and following up the same day by both text and email with full details. (These communications had concluded by 1:15 p.m.) By 11:30 a.m. Monday morning I hadn't heard back. When I called again, (the call rolled over from the office directly to the plumber, who said he was on his back underneath someone's sink), I was told nothing was scheduled and was asked for the work details again, despite having already provided them. When I expressed concern about the multiple provisions of the details--given the tight timing--the conversation was ended abruptly by the plumber ("I'm busy"). This experience suggested organizational and communication issues. That impression was reinforced by the fact that my landlord had also been waiting on an electronic invoice from the December visit and still hadn't received it by Jan. 12. Bottom line: if you're judging purely on workmanship, I have no complaints. But if timely communication, clear scheduling, and not having to repeat yourself matter to you, this may not be the right fit.
