I'll share a little anecdote with y'all. I posted photos to IG about their pies recently. My cousin commented "Baaaarrrrrraaaanngg me some pies!" Funny yeah? I thought it was a riot. (If you're a Dad, go ahead and steal that joke. It's kid tested too.) I AM NOT part of the Australian community. However, I am a part of the community of people that love the f*ck out of pot pies, hand pies, stuffed dough, pockets, empanadas, stuffed crust shells, pasties & Brit/Cornish pasties. And anything kin to them. For the taste of a good savory pie, I'll travel out of my way for them. Before my first visit I went through reviews so I was prepared. The most notable detail is bake time/ selections which aren't always available. So if you have particular interest in a certain flavor of pie it would be wise to call ahead. Bake time takes an hour and as Americans we haven't the patience to wait.. Phone first. I was picking up pies for a birthday shindig so I called ahead and made a future order. A few needed to be baked and I had more than 90 minutes to spare before pickup. Back at the party, we decided to divvy them up into quarters for sharing. Everyone was thrilled with most flavors. Some are definite favorites while others are colossal stomach (space) wasters. Personally not a fan of the veg pizza. The sauce tastes like Ragu to me, blech. Other favs; chicken tikka masala, buffalo chicken, chicken and mushroom.. okay, I'll stop. The steak and potato pie is so mf'ing good and my favvvvvvvorite (even though I've been trying to stay off beef since the new year). There is some sort or hint of what I think is A1 in the gravy. It's tasty! It's best to have these pies when they are piping hot. There is so much to enjoy from the flavors and the mixture of sauce, meat and crust. It just hits the mark. I remember walking out of there with a hot pie on a rainy evening. I took one bite and then sank into the driver's seat of my whip. Instant comfort.. About the venue. It's not much. A counter, a couple helpers and what I imagine are "easy bake ovens" pumping out pies when necessary. The space is Ikea (economy) comfortable. I feel as though the storefront is an unnecessary amount of space. You gotta remember, this is Lakeview and I imagine rent is high. That means they gotta pump out their delicious pies often and I would like to continue buying them because I digz it. I feel as though a walk up counter and shared dining space would be a better idea for them. Also, I have to wonder why they aren't selling pies to the bar or train crowd. They close at 9pm..?! If they had a push cart, guy with a bag (ie tamale guy), etc selling pies on the street.. I am sure people would buy these. I certainly would. Last, something I've wondered is why they don't offer frozen pies for sale. For those of us not having an hour to play with, I would gladly buy a few and bake myself. It would make supporting them easier. Get'em while you can and always piping hot! read more

I finally was able to try this Hot & New place right on the corner of Sheffield & Belmont! I went in for lunch and had the Chicken Tikka Pie & then got a Mexican pie to go. The pies are awesome because your able to eat the whole thing no silver trays. The owner Arjun was very nice and gave me a quick background on the restaurant and how it came to be. Love this new addition to the hood. It was perfect for a quick satisfying lunch esp. since it was still a bit chilly outside. They were out of the shepherd's pie and more wouldn't be ready for another 40 minutes, so we had the chicken tikka, classic mince, mac n' cheese, and cream of spinach soup. That soup was superb. The mac n' cheese was solid. The pie fillings were tasty. The pie itself was perfect in texture and flavor. I also loved the size of the pies, as it is just right. And definitely, do just bite into as it is nicely handheld. Prices are fair. The space itself is cute. The staff was nice, though I would have liked a bit more enthusiasm or conversation especially since we were new to the place. read more

This review is due to the experience or the non experience that we had on the evening of Tuesday, February 12 at around 6:10 in the evening. We were so excited to try Barangaroos, but were sadly let down quickly after entering. When we got there, they only had approximately 6 pies in total in the case, and we were informed by the lady behind the counter that this was all that they had for the rest of the evening. Really?!?! 6:10 in the evening, prime dinner time, in a prime location, where people can get grub on the way home, and you don't have all your selections available, and you have no plans of making anymore? In my opinion, this is not a good business model. Additionally, the lady behind the counter, although not rude by any means, was not apologetic in any way, and did not have the sense of urgency to assist at all, when we decided to leave, she just shrugged her shoulders, with an OK. Thankfully, there are other options in the area and we were able to enjoy the rest of the evening. For the owner/operator of this establishment, please take this as constructive criticism. I am not out to ruin your business, in fact, I want your business to succeed. We would love to visit your establishment and have the opportunity to enjoy something different that Chicago needs, but I am afraid that if the experience we had is the norm, then I am not sure how successful your operation will be. read more

I used to live in AUS and NZ. I'd get my daily pie from the local bakery and enjoy my lunch outside. Once I got here, I missed good individual meat pies. The ones I found just weren't right. Barangaroos gets it mostly right! They are still a new business, so they don't have all the pie flavors I love - and might cater to a more "American" palate - but the employees said that they would start expanding the menu soon, with different flavors of the month, etc. I am hoping that my beloved Potato Top, Beef and Cheese, and Spicy Veggie pies will make appearances! They sell Bundaberg fizzy drinks! They sell Tim Tams and Australian liquorice (if liquorice is your thing)! It's a nice little shop (emphasis on little - do NOT expect seating for a big group), nice people working there, and a small but flavorful pie menu. My favorite is the Steak and Potato. I honestly thought it had stout or ale; the employees said it didn't have anything like that, but steak and ale is another flavor they might offer in the future. I'm looking forward to it. This place is so unique. If you are looking for a fun lunch spot or to try something new, this is your spot. All the pies are delicious and super filling. (They are also BYOB if you want to bring a beverage with you). I came here with family from out of town because I wanted to do something different than Chicago Pizza, and it was a hit. I AM part of that Australian community! The deception is calling these Australian pies! While they are made up like an Australian pie and the crust was good - the fillings are NOT correct! These are NOT Australian pies! And trust me. Someone had put mint or something similar in the Steak and Potato pie. I'm a true blue Aussie. I know my mint! But I guess to be fair when I read the menu I told my daughter I didn't want one as these were NOT Australian fillings. She insisted I was there so I should try. My daughter, also an Australian, took one bite of each and agreed! These are NOT proper Aussie pies. I am not saying that the fillings are bad. Maybe people in Chicago will probably like them. But calling them Australian pies when they clearly are not is wrong and deceptive! I guess to have a proper Aussie pie I just need to go back to Australia. I was hoping I had a little bit of home here. But alas not meant to be. Just another place trying to capitalize on the Australian name when they have no clue what they are doing! I have driven by Barangaroos Aussie Pies many times without stopping. But today, it was lunchtime and I decided to pull over and go in. What a great decision it was!!! I just had my first Aussie Pie for lunch minutes ago and it was FANTASTIC!! I had the Steak and Guinness Pie. The crust was so flaky and held the meat and veggies perfectly. The meat was flavorful and perfectly seasoned, and I never noticed that the Guinness was in it!! I also got two steak and potato pie for my wife and I to have for dinner, along with a shepherds Pie for a lunch later this week. And, I picked up a side of their Mac and Cheese which was surprisingly as good or better than I have had at some of the bigger, "fancier" restaurants around Chicagoland. I bought the Classic Mince Pie for my 20 year old daughter and she absolutely loved it! She scarfed it down with moans of utter happiness!

After learning about different countries in preschool, my son came home one day and asked to try Australian food. In answering that request, his mother and I discovered that these pies are really well done -- fresh and piping hot (no steam table), and with a very balanced flavor. I've been here twice for takeout and both times were perfect! Got the Mince pie, Steak and Guinness and seasonal Thanksgiving pie. All 3 were soooo good! Flavorful, hot and unique! As a foodie, baker and traveler, I can attest that Barangaroos is a five-star pie place. The Aussie pies are perfection, mouthwatering, with amazing fillings and the crust is incredible (made at the shop). I was skeptical about the Lamington mini cakes thinking that they could be dry but to my surprise there were unbelievable, moist and flavorful. I wish they had more Australian/British desserts on the menu! Pies are between $7-$9 but with one or two you will be full indeed. When you first see the pies they look a little small, but they're actually very filling. I walked by this new restaurant on its second day in business and on a whim decided to go in. I got the chicken tikka pie and one of the staff gave me some of the spinach soup for free. The pie was warm and flavorful, with plenty of spices (although not very spicy), and the spinach soup was fantastic- rich and creamy and delicious. I have wanted to try Aussie meat for decades. Finally I got here. I had the spinach soup and it by itself was worth the trip. I had steak and potato pie and Shepard's pie. These are not like American pot pies. These are not sweet but are made with British brown sauce. These are a little tangy and lightly spiced. The crust is the container not an aluminum pan. This is good for the flavor. The chef/owner was friendly. If you have never had a serious meat pie, you must try this. read more

I came in here with a friend based on their recommendation. Cute small place. I did not look at the menu beforehand. Sadly, there was not much for me to eat here. Not one vegan pie.... You guys are missing out on a huge segment of growing plant based eaters. Especially younger eaters, whom your place would appeal. Once I see a vegan option I'll re-access my opinion. Dang $10?! I stopped in for a quick lunch. With tip my total was $10+ for the steak and potatoes pie. On the menu it is $7.99, with tax/tip comes out to $10. While I thought the filling was tasty, I didn't love anything about my pie. Didn't think the crust was anything extraordinary either. I saw some other reviews that the filling was bland, but I didn't have this problem. It tasted like the balti pies at Trader Joe's if you bake them in the oven, so definitely better than Marie Calendar's. I think at a lower price point this could be fun place to sample different pies, but for $10 I could get more food at the many other lunch spots in the area. I was disappointed that I wouldn't be able to try more than just one of the pies. I know this is a novelty and is meant to be "Aussie", but I prefer dollop or bang bang for my savory pies. If I'm in the area again maybe I will try another pie, but I won't be rushing back here. read more

Stumbled across this place while wandering the streets trying to find a place that was open on thanksgiving after plans with family fell through. This place had a thanksgiving pie that seemed perfect - and it was. We got the thanksgiving one, minced meat and steak and peppers. Came here before a concert at The Vic and it was a great pre-show meal. Delicious, unique food. The sides are just as good as the meat pies. Very quick, hot, and fantastic. We split the bbq chicken and steak pepper onion meat pies and both were well seasoned well and eaten quickly. Basil tomato soup is a great way to round out the meal. read more

Great new spot. I was easily able to park close by on a Sunday (the Cubs were not playing), but it's also close to the Belmont red line stop. They didn't have the sherpherd's pie even though I was there pretty early, so I tried the classic mince instead. It's very flavorful, moist, and you get a lot of filling. The crust is loosely comparable to an enpanada, but more tender. It's nothing like a standard pie crust, which I often regard as merely a filling delivery system. It's also quite filling. The spinach soup is outstanding, the flavor is very concentrated like a liquefied version of a Greek spinach pie. The price is good for what you get, a pie, soup and soda with tax was $12. Can't wait to visit this place. We were at the BELMONT-SHEFFIELD MUSIC FEST this past weekend and Barangaroos has a tent right outside of their store front. I saw plenty people walk by with some sort of pie that they would just bite into and the crust looked amazing that I just wanted some! I have to say we walked up and down twice and nothing! On our exit - BAM there they were. I got the beef and potato and my sister got the tikka chicken (I believe) the flavors were intense, so intense you could smell the filling once you cracked the crust. I had a great experience and great food. Tried the mince & a brownie & a frozen buffalo chicken one to bake later. I just baked the frozen one & it was easy & a perfect dinner to have waiting after a long day. Both were flavorful and super tasty! I liked the mince more than buffalo chicken, but I tend to like those flavors better. I tried the chicken since I've never though to do it in pie form. The big chunks of chicken were stellar so I might even get that one again. The service was great too. I even got a nice little note and a brownie in the delivery order.
