Either way, I was excited to finally try this Chicago staple! It's definitely not a fancy brunch place, it's more casual and has kept its old character. Which was A-ok with me because we had great service and good food. But for example, don't expect espresso drinks here - they just have regular coffee. I appreciate that they are byob though, and their menu is extensive. A lot of fun Swedish offerings and classic American breakfast goodness - something for everyone and at reasonable prices. I ended up opting for the cheddar bacon potato pancakes, which were very yummy. Luckily, my friend chose the cinnamon rolls as one of her sides (comes with 2), so I was able to try one. I waited until the end of the meal to eat it, so it wasn't that warm or gooey anymore but it was still pretty scrumptious. Both meals arrived via DoorDash - missing all their cinnamon rolls - 4 total. This was my first order from Ann Sather, and it was a letdown. I ordered two meals that were each supposed to come with cinnamon rolls - the item this place is famous for - and every single roll was missing. Four rolls total, none of them in the bag. The bag did arrive open, but my driver had thousands of deliveries and a near-perfect rating, so I don't think the rolls walked off on the way. This looks like a packing miss in the kitchen. The rest of the food was fine, but forgetting the signature item - on both meals - is a real accuracy problem. Today, my wife and I decided to try Ann Sather's other location since we were craving their famous cinnamon rolls. We first arrived and were sat immediately upon entering. This location is a barebones simple cafe. Their other location has a more homey mom and pop restaurant feel. The seats are very uncomfortable. The pads on the chairs are hard as a rock. We were immediately greeted by our server. He got us coffee quickly and took our orders. I got the chicken fajita omelette, with sides of 2 cinnamon rolls and cottage cheese (for my wife's fruit cup she ordered). We shared the cinnamon rolls as well. We were very disappointed. When you get the rolls at their main location, they are oozing with frosting and are very warm and soft. This location served us somewhat hard rolls and barely had a trace of any heat. They felt old from a few days ago. The fruit bowl was very good and plentiful. The chicken fajita lacked flavor. Its inside fajita contents were bland. No seasoning. The only taste it had was from the spicy salsa you can pour on it. Overall, we were very disappointed. We have the main location 5 stars. I had a truly exceptional breakfast here while visiting a friend in Chicago. The atmosphere is warm, lively and full of people coming and going. After dining here I completely understand why. Ann Sather is a Chicago classic and I love that it's still around, still has all its original character, and still has their Christmas lights up. I stopped in for breakfast on a whim after a doctor's appointment. Haven't been into any of the locations in quite some time, and it was nice to see that something hasn't changed. I was dining solo, and didn't really need much attention, but she always had a smile, and had the confident air of a diner waitress who's been there forever, knows all the regulars, can do it all. I really enjoyed the service. My coffee cup stayed full and hot. I ordered the Monte Cristo breakfast, and, if we're being honest, we don't go to Ann Sather because it's the most amazing food. The French toast on my Monte Cristo was visibly burnt (thought you could hide it under the eggs? Not on my watch), and the eggs were scrambled harder than I would prefer. I got a side of cinnamon rolls with it, and they were super satisfying. They're just what you want from a cinnamon roll. Warm, too sweet (which is perfectly sweet), gooey and cinnamony. The texture was very fluffy, and I enjoyed the mouthfeel. It was just sorely lacking in flavor. The service is rather aggressive, for lack of a better term. I entered the restaurant around noon (well before the 3pm closing time stated on the sign at the door, plus there was still a table of people dining in) and was immediately stared down by all the employees and asked what I wanted before I took 5 steps into the building. I came for brunch on a Saturday and the restaurant was very crowded but tables moved quickly and we got seated right away! The tables are set pretty close to each other so the noise level is a little high. I shared a cinnamon roll order with a friend (you get two as a side) which was the perfect starter. Wow!! The French Toast Fantasy was magical. Everything about this experience was lovely. My husband and I biked from our hotel near Millennium Park. We shared the French Toast Fantasy. They brought it out on two separate plates for us. The fresh berries were the perfect pairing to this marscapone-filled cinnamon roll decadence. Delicious! Since you get two biscuits, I traded one with a friend who got the cinnamon roll and would say I liked the cinnamon roll a bit more but the biscuit was also really good (not spicy). The fruit also had a good mixture. The Monte cristo was good but different. The French toast was really good and on top on that was a full piece of sliced ham (yummy but a little chewy) and then a cheesy egg mash (yummy but heavy). read more

Full disclosure I'm catching up on reviews from a trip a few months ago and I am amazed that I just noticed I forgot to review this wonderful place. Although I don't see it on the menu and I think it was a special, but I went there. I was able to get eggs with a combination of the Swedish sausage and the Swedish meatballs, and also a couple of the pancakes. I've ordered from here twice. Both times have been positive experiences. Both have been pickup orders (one to the wrong location, make sure to double check before purchasing). Cinnamon rolls are great, especially with a little time in the microwave to get them soft again. My sunrise breakfast wrap was almost all egg, which I found slightly disappointing but still good. I walk by this place daily and there is always a line during peak hours on the weekend, so I decided to check it out before work about a week ago. The service was friendly and prompt and the menu options were fairly broad. Portions were generous across the board. I tried one of the special items - a breakfast sandwich, as these are particularly hard to find (at least affordable ones) in Chicago. I was excited for the cinnamon rolls because they have never disappointed me and opted to leave them in the bag until I finished my main course. The breakfast burrito wasn't really that flavorful, the eggs were bland, but it was edible with hot sauce and ketchup on it. I ordered the sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito with a side of cottage cheese and cinnamon rolls. I was able to try my husband's honey and biscuits. Holy cow, the biscuits were so dry that they were falling apart. I have never had biscuits so crumbly that you couldn't eat it without a spoon because it would've fallen apart on a fork. After finishing half the burrito I happily moved onto the cinnamon roll. I could not believe someone picked these cinnamon rolls off a tray and wrapped it up for us. They had little to no icing on them, seriously I have never seen such a thing. They were also so dry and hard that they could not be considered cinnamon rolls. I took photo of them because I was speechless. I truly only went to Ann Sather's for the cinnamon rolls and they completely dropped the ball. I usually go to the one off of Belmont since they always have great service, decided to try this one today. The food was great and came out quickly, the ambiance was great as well. Our waitress was extremely rude and aggressive, she was the younger one with light hair. We were so excited about having our breakfast here but it was quite uncomfortable and rushed on an unbusy Tuesday morning. I asked where the restroom was upon arriving and she rudely said "it's right there." She did not even say hello when greeting, just asked what we want to drink. I let her know which two sides I wanted with my entree, I didn't see that the one I wanted wasn't listed as a regular side, so she repeated "which sides," three times, then reached over my shoulder and angrily circled the options with a pen on my menu, and didn't clarify what she meant. She didn't check to see if our food was good after we received it, and didn't ask if we needed anything else, just dropped the check without a word. No one said goodbye, it was rather cold. I'm not sure if I offended her when I asked where the restroom is? Maybe she heard my friend and I speaking in Spanish and was offended by that? She was very amicable and friendly with every other guest at the restaurant, saying hello, asking questions, and even laughing along with them. I am also a waitress at a brunch restaurant, so I understand the struggles of working a busy shift or working while going through tough times, it's hard. However, no matter how busy it is (which it wasn't), being rude, aggressive, and racist to guests is something I would get fired for. We then ordered two eggs over easy and bacon and a three egg omelette with ham and no onions. When I asked for hash browns, the waitress told me that they came with onions however to my surprise, when she brought the food over, they had made the hash browns without the onions. Extra points!! We had the great fortune of discovering this unexpectedly while carrying two miniature bottles of champagne that the apartment across the street gifted to us at the end of a tour. Splitting the Smoked Salmon Benedict with two sides was a perfect amount of food for me and the girlfriend. We loved the generous amount of hollandaise sauce on the side and were very happy we added cheddar cheese to the "hashbrowns" for 50 cents. I say "hashbrowns" because they were really just roasted potatoes or homefries, although we very tasty. The cinnamon rolls were killer. Warm, delicious, gooey, and sweet. On my recent trip with friends to Chicago I bragged about how awesome Ann Sather's is, and the amazing Cinnamon Rolls. The cinnamon roll was hot, but the actual roll was dry and lacked flavor. WHAT HAPPENED!!?? I then received my entrée of a Breakfast Burrito with sausage. BLEH!
