While visiting Chicago, we stopped by Ann Sather's to pick up some cinnamon rolls to go. The restaurant was packed, which seemed like a good sign, and after looking over the menu, it's easy to see why it's such a popular spot. The cinnamon rolls definitely lived up to their reputation. They were soft, fresh, and generously topped with icing, making for a delicious treat. After seeing all of the other dishes being served, we'd love to come back for a full meal on a future visit. Cinnamon rolls are a must try! We brought our own sprinkles to put on them lol that doesn't come with them (just prefacing). For breakfast the food was fine I think based off other pictures you can tell you get what you pay for nothing 5 star worthy but for a hungover breakfast it did the trick. We came with a large group and they messed up one of our orders so that's why I knocked one star off of service. They were able to remake the order they messed up but still annoying to wait. Both meals arrived via DoorDash - missing all their cinnamon rolls - 4 total. This was my first order from Ann Sather, and it was a letdown. I ordered two meals that were each supposed to come with cinnamon rolls - the item this place is famous for - and every single roll was missing. Four rolls total, none of them in the bag. The bag did arrive open, but my driver had thousands of deliveries and a near-perfect rating, so I don't think the rolls walked off on the way. This looks like a packing miss in the kitchen. The rest of the food was fine, but forgetting the signature item - on both meals - is a real accuracy problem. Love Ann Sather! A fantastic mom-and-pop restaurant with incredible food and one of my go-to breakfast and lunch spots in the city. If you're visiting Chicago, Ann Sather is a must try! My only piece of feedback, if you're reading this, would be to bring back the old Turkey Club recipe! It used to be my go-to order, and what made it a true club sandwich was the three slices of bread with a middle layer separating the turkey and bacon. Those beautiful, stacked layers of bread, turkey, and bacon were what made the sandwich special. Now, the Turkey Club is essentially a regular sandwich with two slices of bread, and I really miss that classic club-style construction. The middle slice of bread is key! It gives the sandwich that signature height, texture, and balance that made the old version so good. I've included a picture below of the old Turkey Club to show what I mean. Popped in on a whim, around 1 pm on a Sunday, and was surprised our party of 2 was seated right away. Maybe we were just past their peak brunch hours. Either way, I was excited to finally try this Chicago staple! It's definitely not a fancy brunch place, it's more casual and has kept its old character. Which was A-ok with me because we had great service and good food. But for example, don't expect espresso drinks here - they just have regular coffee. I appreciate that they are byob though, and their menu is extensive. A lot of fun Swedish offerings and classic American breakfast goodness - something for everyone and at reasonable prices. I ended up opting for the cheddar bacon potato pancakes, which were very yummy. Luckily, my friend chose the cinnamon rolls as one of her sides (comes with 2), so I was able to try one. I waited until the end of the meal to eat it, so it wasn't that warm or gooey anymore but it was still pretty scrumptious. Today, my wife and I decided to try Ann Sather's other location since we were craving their famous cinnamon rolls. We first arrived and were sat immediately upon entering. This location is a barebones simple cafe. Their other location has a more homey mom and pop restaurant feel. The seats are very uncomfortable. The pads on the chairs are hard as a rock. We were immediately greeted by our server. He got us coffee quickly and took our orders. I got the chicken fajita omelette, with sides of 2 cinnamon rolls and cottage cheese (for my wife's fruit cup she ordered). We shared the cinnamon rolls as well. We were very disappointed. When you get the rolls at their main location, they are oozing with frosting and are very warm and soft. This location served us somewhat hard rolls and barely had a trace of any heat. They felt old from a few days ago. The fruit bowl was very good and plentiful. The chicken fajita lacked flavor. Its inside fajita contents were bland. No seasoning. The only taste it had was from the spicy salsa you can pour on it. Overall, we were very disappointed. We have the main location 5 stars. As a longtime former Chicago resident, on a recent trip visiting family I was excited to take my partner to try the famous food at Ann Sather. Unfortunately, a pleasant experience was not in the offing. From the jump, there was no host or hostess taking names and seating people, just a single harried server working off of memory. Once seated, we sat for nearly 15 minutes before a server came by. Things were about to get worse. Our server, Zach, was outwardly hostile, condescending, and rude. When we tried to place our order, he shouted us down, "I'm in control! I'm your access to food." We sat in stunned silence for a moment before fearfully placing our order. A few minutes go by. Zach returns, looking sweaty and ill-at-ease, and hurls three coffee mugs down on the table as he grunts "coffee!" It nearly spills. By this time, we can hear him being belligerent with other tables in the dining room - near-screamed oaths like: "I don't know what's going on!" "I'm sorry but I'm doing the best I can" He checks on our meal at some point. A few items are missing, which we point out, much to his rage. He delivers a faux apology in a simpering voice, "I'm sooo sorry...I'm doing the best I can." My partner points out how rude he'd been earlier, and that he'd hurt her feelings, to which he gave the galling reply, "that makes two of us." By the end of the meal (which was...just OK, admittedly spoiled by the atmosphere), we were ready to leave and wash our hands of the fairly bewildering and demeaning experience we'd just had. But Zach wasn't done. We overheard him shout at another table that he was "an absolute f*ck-up, this woman will tell you all about it," gesturing toward our table. He comes back to us to collect the check (which he'd thrown down earlier) and immediately gets in my partner's face, looking apoplectic, and says with as much venom as he can muster: "I'm sorry I'm such a f*ck-up!" We are furious at this point and tell him we're done here. To the manager of this location: do better. You clearly had a toxic team member working that day. If you did your job, he no longer has his. I had a truly exceptional breakfast here while visiting a friend in Chicago. The atmosphere is warm, lively and full of people coming and going. After dining here I completely understand why. The cinnamon rolls and potato pancakes were to die for. As someone from Texas who is used to very large portions of food it was very comforting to see that reflected here. Food was everything I didn't know I needed. Obviously the cinnamon rolls are a must have. They're homemade and put places like Cinnabon to shame. I ordered the Denver omelette, which was amazing and just the right amount of onions because sometimes places go overboard. I also had fresh fruit which included blackberries which I don't often see at places. Our service was speedy and our waiter was attentive once we sat down. Ann Sather is a Chicago classic and I love that it's still around, still has all its original character, and still has their Christmas lights up. I stopped in for breakfast on a whim after a doctor's appointment. Haven't been into any of the locations in quite some time, and it was nice to see that something hasn't changed. My server was warm and friendly. I was dining solo, and didn't really need much attention, but she always had a smile, and had the confident air of a diner waitress who's been there forever, knows all the regulars, can do it all. I really enjoyed the service. My coffee cup stayed full and hot. I ordered the Monte Cristo breakfast, and, if we're being honest, we don't go to Ann Sather because it's the most amazing food. The French toast on my Monte Cristo was visibly burnt (thought you could hide it under the eggs? Not on my watch), and the eggs were scrambled harder than I would prefer. I got a side of cinnamon rolls with it, and they were super satisfying. They're just what you want from a cinnamon roll. Warm, too sweet (which is perfectly sweet), gooey and cinnamony. Got two cinnamon rolls for takeout and found them underwhelming. The icing was too thick (practically smothering the cinammon roll) and made it hard to taste the cinnamon roll part. I also didn't taste much cinnamon; they gave me one of the end corner pieces, but even the other piece was a lot more bread than cinnamon. The size was decent, a bit larger than my palm. The texture was very fluffy, and I enjoyed the mouthfeel. It was just sorely lacking in flavor. I might eat it again if someone offered me one, but I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to buy one again. A bit surprised, especially since everyone raves about this place's cinnamon rolls. The service is rather aggressive, for lack of a better term. I entered the restaurant around noon (well before the 3pm closing time stated on the sign at the door, plus there was still a table of people dining in) and was immediately stared down by all the employees and asked what I wanted before I took 5 steps into the building. I came for brunch on a Saturday and the restaurant was very crowded but tables moved quickly and we got seated right away! The tables are set pretty close to each other so the noise level is a little high. I shared a cinnamon roll order with a friend (you get two as a side) which was the perfect starter. I wish it was a little warmer but they are really churning out the cinnamon rolls back there! I got the monthly special potato pancakes with bacon, cheddar, and dill. They were super flavorful and the crunchy texture was on point! My friends got breakfast wraps and they looked good but a little liquidy inside, I'm not sure from what. Food: Their draw is cinnamon buns and since I am borderline obsessed with them, I told myself I have to get them. It was DELICIOUS, no other way around it. Wow!! The French Toast Fantasy was magical. Everything about this experience was lovely. My husband and I biked from our hotel near Millennium Park. We shared the French Toast Fantasy. They brought it out on two separate plates for us. The fresh berries were the perfect pairing to this marscapone-filled cinnamon roll decadence. Delicious! Full disclosure I'm catching up on reviews from a trip a few months ago and I am amazed that I just noticed I forgot to review this wonderful place. Although I don't see it on the menu and I think it was a special, but I went there. I was able to get eggs with a combination of the Swedish sausage and the Swedish meatballs, and also a couple of the pancakes. Everything was great, including their legendary cinnamon roll, which another member of my party got. It is crazy how much food you can get here. I got the Monte Cristo with honey biscuits and fruit and had to take half my Monte cristo home! Since you get two biscuits, I traded one with a friend who got the cinnamon roll and would say I liked the cinnamon roll a bit more but the biscuit was also really good (not spicy). The fruit also had a good mixture. The Monte cristo was good but different. The service was friendly and prompt and the menu options were fairly broad. Portions were generous across the board. I tried one of the special items - a breakfast sandwich, as these are particularly hard to find (at least affordable ones) in Chicago. The food was fine - bacon was a bit undercooked potatoes were well seasoned and the fruit bowl was generous. I've ordered from here twice. Both times have been positive experiences. Both have been pickup orders (one to the wrong location, make sure to double check before purchasing). Cinnamon rolls are great, especially with a little time in the microwave to get them soft again. My sunrise breakfast wrap was almost all egg, which I found slightly disappointing but still good. I normally would go to Ann Sather's for the cinnamon rolls because they are massive and tasty but they completely dropped the ball this time around. My husband and I ordered to-go food over the weekend and we of course got the cinnamon rolls with our breakfast burritos. I was excited for the cinnamon rolls because they have never disappointed me and opted to leave them in the bag until I finished my main course. The breakfast burrito wasn't really that flavorful, the eggs were bland, but it was edible with hot sauce and ketchup on it. I ordered the sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito with a side of cottage cheese and cinnamon rolls. I was able to try my husband's honey and biscuits. Holy cow, the biscuits were so dry that they were falling apart. I have never had biscuits so crumbly that you couldn't eat it without a spoon because it would've fallen apart on a fork. After finishing half the burrito I happily moved onto the cinnamon roll. I could not believe someone picked these cinnamon rolls off a tray and wrapped it up for us. They had little to no icing on them, seriously I have never seen such a thing. They were also so dry and hard that they could not be considered cinnamon rolls. I took photo of them because I was speechless. I truly only went to Ann Sather's for the cinnamon rolls and they completely dropped the ball. Cinnamon rolls here are a 10/10 and huge. Western omelette, I really enjoyed it all. Hash browns are really more small potato wedges instead, which I didn't love but they still tasted good. Great brunch spot to take visitors! read more
