I contacted several…read moreattorneys from SJ to SF, including the East Bay, and found that their responses generally fell into the following categories: 1) Ghosted / never returned my calls. 2) Some replied with a menu of fees with one asking for a $600 consultation fee (a neutral statement, not a judgment on how anyone runs their business). 3) Several days to respond to each message. 4) One launched into a monologue about how he could take my case all the way to the Supreme Court. Eric was the only attorney who responded the same day. He even took the time to decipher my nearly inaudible voicemail, which had been garbled by poor cell reception. He was direct and transparent from the start and spent more than 30 minutes speaking with me before deciding to take on my case. He is exceptionally intelligent, efficient, and highly knowledgeable about real estate law. The level of time and care he devoted to my case made me feel like I was his only client. Five business days later, after never hearing from them, I called THEM back to schedule a meeting. After our initial meeting, we were handed off to Linda Kramer, who was quite rude and condescending, but at that point we had already paid the retainer and needed to get our documents done. It then took FOUR WEEKS to get the next appt scheduled with Linda. So much for timely customer service. Either they have more clients than they can be adequately responsive to or this is the level of attention they think is OK.

Looking for an alternative program to migrate to I heard a lot about QuickBooks, but am rather 'old-school' and was trying to avoid putting our business accounting in the cloud and having a direct link from online bookkeeping to our checking account. As I had never used any other accounting program, and have no formal training, switching felt daunting. I found Prosper Bookkeeping on Yelp and reached out to Daniel Lin for a free consultation. He explained that I could use QBO without linking our checking account directly or utilizing AI features if I did not want to. So I decided to work with Daniel -- he patiently went through the steps to set up our books for the beginning of the year and coached me in bringing all entries for the year up to date. It was helpful for me to learn the new program UI through hands on instruction via Zoom, and then later review the videos Daniel provided of our training sessions. Daniel is a consummate professional - a non-judgmental and patient listener who is extremely knowledgeable and has a knack for quickly parsing through numbers. Leyla no longer calls you to finalize your taxes. She still provided better services than Storek, Carlson & Strutz CPA as I hear they now charge $500 for similar services. After receiving her itemized price sheet I am looking for another CPA that will take better care of me that is worth the price. The last time I was in her office both Leyla and her staff treated me like a bunch of Meerkats!

We had to move on to another accountant when we realized how much we were being grossly overcharged in comparison to other accountants of her experience level and higher. She has a lovely, bubbly personality, and was a lot fun to be around, but when you receive a bill for several thousand dollars for a service that is typically 1/3 other similarly experienced accountants charge, you know something is seriously not right. The last time we used her, we were grieved to see another disturbingly high bill. We spoke with a couple who requires similar services of their accountant and they were appalled by the fees she had charged us. We also shared the same information with a couple other accountants and they were equally shocked. Thankfully, we found another accountant that is a lot more experienced, easier to work with due to his ability to work remotely, and has been literally 1/4 of the fee Leyla had charged us for the last 2 -3 years we used her. Our taxes have also been more complicated over the past couple of years and he still is on average at least 1/4 of the fee that Leyla charged us the last couple years we used her. What is the most disturbing part of this, is during the last few years we worked with Leyla, we were really struggling financially. We felt we were grossly being taken advantage of in spite of our circumstances. Based on our great experiences with her in the beginning, we felt we needed to double check with other friends and accountants regarding our bills before searching for a new accountant. We are very grateful we trusted our instincts, double checked with others and moved on. If you do choose to work with her, make sure you get the fee quoted up front before having her move on with the work.
