It's been some years since I…read morecollected comic books because they started taking up too much space over the decades and because I started getting annoyed with DC and Marvel for their endless reboots, making everything I'd read before no longer cannon. However, I still love the characters and thought I'd pop in to see what's new since I stopped reading. I caught the owner at a moment when he had to care for a personal issue, as he was explaining to a customer that he had to step a way for a bit soon. I told him to feel free to kick me out and close the shop, I'm just there out of curiosity than a need to actually buy anything. I told him I'm a former collector. He insisted I stay and browse the comics and even take my time to read. I could mind the shop for him and just let anyone who comes in while he's away know that he will be back soon. I happily agreed and was a bit taken aback by his trust and kindness. He literally did leave me alone in his shop for a good 20 minutes. His is the sort of shop I preferred when I collected comics. The kind where the books are on the rack and you can flip through them a bit before you buy. This is in contrast to the stores that keep their comics bagged and you need to commit to buying before you know whether you will enjoy the storyline or the art. I don't live in the area, but if I did, I'd be a regular here. A small business definitely worth supporting.

It's a roomy store, compared to a lot of comic shops, with a lot of recent series, if not the most…read morerecent issues of those series. Their margins must be tight, as they open at 10 AM on Wednesday, and some titles are sold out by 11:30. So, they appear to be under ordering, so as not to have to potentially sit on stock. Not too long ago, they changed their policy where they wouldn't be ordering variant covers unless you specifically pre-ordered them. Sure, that's their prerogative, but many variants are open-order, not requiring any minimums on the part of the retailer, so it just seems...odd. The service...This is my biggest gripe. Often, I've gone into the store to find the cashier talking to a friend/acquaintance. A customer might want assistance, and the cashier is visibly annoyed that he has to stop his conversation to provide customer service. Then, once the customer checked out and left, the cashier would turn to his friend and say something like "That's the guy I was telling you about", with a laugh. So, they seem to joke about their customers - the people keeping them in business - and it just feels unprofessional. I've worked retail, so I get it, but those aren't conversations to gold loudly, as other customers are in the store. I mean, what are they saying about ME when I leave? This has happened more than once, while some of the other loud topics of discussion aren't always appropriate for "polite company". The most friendly employee, sadly, passed away recently, so we're left with the ones talking behind our backs.

Prodigal Comics is in place of Alliance Comics. (Apparently one of the employees of the old store…read morepurchased it?). Anyhow, I was clueless till I dropped by, it's been a few months or so. There's a bit more space on the main floor, though maybe it's my own imagination. There's nothing downstairs, it used to be for all the 50% off goods but it sounds like they're going to rent that out for players to run tabletop games and such. (There is a space in front facing the street displaying 50% off books, of course just those with the sticker.) The guy running the place seems nice, it's still bright and vibey, and it's worth going to. Oh, don't remember if it was there before but there's definitely an old-school arcade game in the corner to play. (X-Men? Wolverine? Avengers? I forget.) Wish I had more time to look around but I was on the clock, but I managed to get some things. This is more for newer comics and action figures, etc., which is fine. They have plenty of comic compilation softcovers as well. Admittedly I'm more a casual comic book person but I enjoyed going there and it's really close to Safeway, restaurants, and the like.

Service was fine although I didn't really talk to many people while there (was more preoccupied with finding the books and checking them out). I'd say this place has great value as the books i got (3) were charged a total of just under $5. I can see why the staff put up flyers stating to be mindful with how many books the customers get as they're priced pretty low, allowing you to collect a decent amount. I'll definitely be back to check this place out again :)

Want three aisles of kids books like Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys? Go here. Need every book C.S. Lewis wrote? Stop by Second Story Books. After visiting nearby ZavaZone with our seven-year-old daughter, we stopped into Second Story for a few minutes, which easily turned into an hour. Every book is 50% off. We left with 15 books for just under $21. The books are well organized and maps help navigate visitors to each section, but know that the warehouse's narrow book aisles can get cramped. It adds to the appeal! There are even harder-to-find rooms with other items like posters for sale. They also sell CDs and DVDs. Staff are helpful. I lost my wallet and within an hour a staff member messaged me on Facebook letting me know they found it and it was safe at the checkout desk. If you have used books, Second Story Books buys them from people.

I sent them an email and within the hour I get a personal phone call back from Aubrey, the sweetest, nicest, most genuine person, they explain the situation and just having a little hiccup, they go above and beyond and refund the 2nd half, and help me feel better about the mistake. I can't thank them enough but they have gotten a repeat customer. These people have my business and I hope the boss sees how amazing Aubrey is and how great she is at handling customers. As others have noted - this is a pretty small store. It might be the smallest comic book store I've seen in the area. But - small is not necessarily a negative. They have a good selection of comics. They also have a small selection of D&D books and dice. They had a large store with clearly labeled although crowded, aisles of comic, anime, cartoon, manga, clothing, and other items. This store is clearly a comic book lovers dream with a library of new and vintage ones that were for sale. They even had a basement area filled with comic books to purchase in bulk and video games to play. All in all, if you are looking for a specific comic book, manga merch, anime merch, Funko Pops and the like to add to your collection, this store is a must visit.

Despite a huge sign proclaiming they sell Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokemon, they did not have anything substantial to offer and from the look of their old product, they don't carry much at all. In terms of comics, it's not much at all. They have far more graphic novels. I'm not sure if this place wants to be a book store more than a comic book store. SERVICE: Okay. Nothing spectacular. Didn't feel like I was valued or helped much. The stairway leading up to it was filthy. COST: Average. Not inflated but not inexpensive either. No real bargains.
