I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Patuxent Plant Nursery. I can honestly say that…read morethey have lost a customer who once considered himself a lifetime customer. The issue itself should have been incredibly simple. I wanted to exchange plants within six days of purchase. The plants had never even left their original pots, were still in the same condition in which I purchased them, and I was completely willing to pay the difference for the plants I wanted instead. I was not asking for anything unreasonable or trying to take advantage of the nursery. I simply wanted to make an exchange within the timeframe and circumstances that I understood their online return and exchange policy to allow. What made this experience particularly frustrating was the way the situation was handled. Rather than working with me to find a reasonable solution, customer service was rude, condescending, and completely unhelpful. The interaction left me with the impression that my business, and the fact that I had been a loyal customer, did not matter. Policies exist for a reason. If a business publicly posts a return or exchange policy online, customers reasonably expect that policy to be honored consistently. In my case, I was attempting to make an exchange just six days after the purchase, with the plants still in their original pots, and I was even willing to pay more for the replacement plants. Despite that, I was met with resistance rather than an effort to resolve the situation. What bothered me most was not simply being told "no." Businesses can have policies and limitations, and sometimes there may be circumstances where a request cannot be accommodated. The real problem was the attitude and lack of willingness to find a solution. A good customer service experience would have involved someone explaining the policy clearly, listening to the circumstances, and at least trying to find a reasonable resolution. Instead, the interaction felt dismissive and condescending. After supporting a local business for years, this is an especially disappointing way to be treated. Customer loyalty is earned over time, and it can disappear very quickly when a customer feels that a business is unwilling to stand behind the policies it advertises or even make a genuine effort to resolve a straightforward issue. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Patuxent Plant Nursery. They have lost a former lifetime customer over what should have been a very simple exchange and a relatively easy customer service interaction. If you are looking for plants, I would strongly recommend checking out Chesapeake Natives up the street instead. In my experience, they have better plants and significantly better customer service. Most importantly, the experience there feels much more like dealing with a business that actually values its customers. For me, this was a very disappointing reminder that the quality of a business isn't just about what it sells. How you treat your customers when there is a problem matters just as much. Toy Trains! Model Kits! And all the other art sets, car tracks, European and Japanese toys and "Stuff." You know how a modern store just has people behind the counter? Hobby Works has staff walking the floor to help you. And they really help. And they know their stuff. And when you're there, it's got that friendly clubhouse atmosphere like you stopped off here while walking home from school in the 6th grade. Sometimes it feels like with online shopping, kids won't ever experience the friendly local stores like we did. Not while Hobby Works is open, it's all modern, but it's a shopping experience that most stores lost over the years- and our kids deserve to experience that friendliness.
