The service here is a little weird and jarring at first. I hadn't gone more than 10 feet through the door when I was asked "What'll you have to drink?" You just have to know the procedure, but it wasn't only me, a Northerner whose brain hadn't yet fully recalibrated for the local accent. Locals were confused too. Procedure is this: tell them your drink preference (I had water), pick up a tray, put it on the counter, pick out a main, three sides, a dessert, slide it down to the register, pay, and take it to your table. At that point do you begin eating? No! Remove your items from the tray and they come by and pick it up. Now begin! You may be thinking "Soup Nazi" from Seinfeld but I assure you it didn't feel that way. Just the quirky way they run the place. The waitress did warm up after I was there a while, came over to ask where I was from, etc. And to try to convince me to come back for breakfast! This is cafeteria style, with everything prepared ahead of time and kept warm on steam trays. So how do they keep that fried chicken so crunchy and delicious? Perhaps the best I've ever had, the batter so crunchy you could probably hear me eating from another room, assertively peppery, the large leg and thigh pieces perfectly cooked and juicy. (White meat also available.) My sides were lima beans, turnip greens, and yams. The highlight was the yams: super sweet but not in a bad way, balanced by good seasonings. The beans were fine, a bit salty. The only disappointment were the turnip greens, too finely chopped and overcooked. The portion sizes were decent. Also included is corn bread. Two choices: baked or fried. Never heard of fried so I tried that. Interesting but a little chewy and not so much corn flavor; next time I'd get the baked. Finishing this rather large lunch was a challenge for me but I managed, while taking in the local ambience. I saved the dessert for later. Dessert? Yes. I was also asked on ordering what I wanted for dessert. The only one that appealed was the red velvet cake (the others were a cobbler and bread pudding) so I got that. I assumed it was included but when I paid I saw it was not. $4; no big deal. It didn't look that good, a thin 1 inch slice tightly shrink wrapped on a paper plate. Looks were deceiving. The first time I actually liked red velvet cake, a light crumbly texture and cream cheese frosting that tasted of more than sugar. With the amount of frosting this tiny slice was quite filling and I'm glad it wasn't larger. All this for a little over $21. I think this was including tip but I'm not positive. We were actually staying in Lumpkin, GA and went to Eufaula, AL in search of breakfast. We saw Barb's Country Kitchen and decided to give it a try. We were seated right away and the server immediately asked for our drink order. I ordered a large orange juice. I'd guess the glass was at least 24 ounces. I ordered the veggie omelette, grits and a biscuit. The servings are very generous and the omelette was one of the best omelettes I've ever had. The grits were delicious as well. The staff was friendly and several of them checked on us as we consumed our meal. If I'm in this area again, I'd definitely dine here again. read more

We stopped here on our way to the beach and were disappointed that they had already stopped serving breakfast (I can't remember what time we got there but it was morning). As a vegetarian, I had mashed potatoes, corn, peas, and mixed veggies. All were tasty (except the peas were kind of blah). Enjoyed our meal greatly! We were greeted as soon as we walked in. This was our first time at Barb's Kitchen, but the staff explained it all very neatly. "Take a tray from here, set it here on the selection counter and the servers will help you choose a meat plate, three sides, a bread, and a dessert." Easy-peasy! As we contemplated the meat choices, the server asked if we'd like a cooked-to-order country fried steak with gravy. Yes, please! We were shown to a clean, comfortable table, our plateful of sides in hand, and our drink orders already at the table. Our freshly cooked country fried steaks arrived soon after and we tucked into a most comfortable, southern-style meal. Our server was very attentive, asking how we were doing, refreshing our drinks, clearing our empty dishes quickly, and helping us with a to-go box. A big shout-out to Tina, who helped us choose our sides and desserts, explaining ingredients and preparation (we've a few special dietary needs, which didn't bother Tina a bit!). Sadly, we live about two hours away from Barb's Country Kitchen, so it may be a bit before we are able to get back for another fine meal. But we are grateful for the staff's patience, skill and pleasant care for us. read more

Enroute to Florida we found this little gem in Eufaula AL for lunch. Buffet style food line with a good selection of home cooked comfort food. I dined on some fried chicken which was crispy on the outside and juicy inside. The collard greens and black eyed peas were very good but the star of the meal was the fabulous peach cobbler. What a great experience for breakfast. From Bernard the owner to the waitress Heather and all the great cooks in the kitchen our experience was delightful filling and memorable. We all cleaned our plates and the owner sent us out the door with a complimentary piece of buttermilk pie. Still warm!!! This place was recommended by our Airbnb owner and we loved it! Saturday morning, there was a little bit of a line, but it moved quickly. My wife and I both had the special, fried catfish and eggs. Mine with cheese grits and hers with roasted potatoes. The fish was crispy and very flavorful. We also had a side of French toast which was very good, with lots of cinnamon. The owners were super nice, making conversation with all the different customers. One of them even came out to our car in the parking lot to give us a piece of key lime pie since they were out of blueberry biscuits. Definitely above and beyond friendly customer service. read more

We had three entrees and it was like $25. And ooh, if they have the fried fish, loosen up a button and go for it. Some of the best fried fish I've had as well. Light, flaky, and so flavorful. Customer service? LOVELY PEOPLE. The two guys in the front, the server, the lady who I think may be Miss Barb are so warm and caring. We stopped into Barb's Country Kitchen this afternoon for lunch. It was our first time. The staff is friendly and helpful. It is a cafeteria style restaurant with lots of meats and sides to choose from. I had baked chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. It came with corn bread and a drink. The chicken was seasoned beautifully. The gravy was so flavorful and the green beans were cooked perfectly. We will be back!! read more

We were in town for a couple of days and stopped here for lunch yesterday afternoon. It was outstanding: a typical meat and three place, where you pick your choices, plus dessert and drink. I got the fried chicken, jambalaya, lima beans, greens, fried cornbread, and buttermilk pie. My husband got the fried chicken, double lima beans, mashed potatoes, and peach cobbler. Everything was so good! In fact, it was so good, we decided to go back this morning for breakfast! This time, no buffet available, you order off the menu. I got the meat omelette (patty sausage), grits, and toast, and my husband got the biscuits and gravy, with a side order of bacon. The other reviews raved about the biscuits and gravy, so he wanted to try them and he said they did not disappoint! Some of the best he said he's ever had! You can tell locals eat here and we can see why. And I can't forget, the service was EXCELLENT. Very kind people and they even remembered us when we came back for breakfast! Walked in and was greeted by Ray - the happiest most friendly person in the world. He assured us our food would be fresh and delicious no matter what we ordered. He was right. We had Pancakes, crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, grits, Fried eggs, home fries, and French toast. Everyone raved on the deliciousness. I was suspicious when (adorable and perfect server) Brandi said they don't have butter. Only margarine. Turns out it was still delicious. My companions said I should carry butter in my purse. Lol. The folks at Barb's were hospitable and kind. Our kids were a little intimidated by the choices necessary to properly order at a meat and three and the staff were so patient. Best fried chicken that I have had in a long time and the greens were perfect- a little funky and a little sweet. Also, I've never had fried cornbread which was great. The guy running the cash register told me that my town, Birmingham, is "the capital of soul food" which proves the old adage that you have to leave home to discover where you are from. Went in for lunch first time visit. It's a tray line but They IMMEDIATELY asked if we wanted the catfish because it's cooked to order. It was fantastic but depends on what you like- it is a fairly light coating not the heavy cornmeal breading you may be used to. I also got the sweet potato casserole as a dessert. We both wanted chicken breast. They said they only have the 1 piece. So I had to order something I didn't even want as we were already there. I tried my husbands chicken, it was just ok.
