Gen. Harold G. "Hal" Moore Jr. Hal Moore was a native of Bardstown and one of the most celebrated soldiers of the war in Vietnam. He survived Pork Chop Hill in Korea and Ia Drang in Vietnam, where his bravery and selflessness led to his being played by Mel Gibson in the 2002 film, "We Were Soldiers," based off a book written by Moore, "We Were Soldiers Once,...And Young." Moore was a 1945 graduate of West Point who had fought in Korea before he was sent to Vietnam in 1965 as commander of a battalion of the 7th Cavalry. The Battle of Ia Drang, in 1965, was the first major U.S. engagement of North Vietnamese Army troops. The 43-year-old lieutenant colonel, saved the lives of most of his men despite being greatly outnumbered (10 to 1) by the NVA. Before the Battle of la Drang was over, 305 Americans had been killed along with an estimated 2,000 North Vietnamese troops. American officials declared the Battle of the la Drang Valley a victory.

For future readers, you'll recall that the spring of 2021 was a crazy time, coming off all the COVID lockdowns. Many distillers, who hadn't been open for tours for many months, were finally opening their doors, and demand for tours and tastings far exceeded availability. Tommy apparently has a few connections, and was able to get us the Connoisseur's Tasting at Heaven Hill, and the full tour and tasting at Maker's Mark. The experience was great: The van was large and comfortable, and Tommy--locally raised--knows the area, it's history, and plenty about the distilleries. In addition to the planned stops, he also made an unscheduled stop at the tiny Limestone Branch Distillery so we could taste some craft cocktails and buy some souvenirs. Bottom line: If you love bourbon, and you're looking for a relaxing, enjoyable, and memorable afternoon in the heart of bourbon country, you will not go wrong with Tommy and CopperTop Tours.

From the time we contacted him, he…read morecorresponded promptly with information and suggestions, based on what our interests were, sending draft itineraries before finalizing the customized tour details. My husband wanted to see smaller distilleries, so Bob customized our tour to include several smaller distilleries. With his guidance, we got to have great one-on-one experiences at each one, much more than if we had tried to do things on our own. Additionally, he picked us up at our AirBnb way out in the boondocks of Taylorsville, took us to all the destinations, including lunch, and brought us back to our AirBnb at the end of each day. If you're doing a bourbon trail in Kentucky, you will have the best experience with Bob as your guide. He is well known at all of the distilleries, and walked into each destination with us, to make sure we knew where to go and were well taken care of. We were able to relax and enjoy ourselves, talk to some of the master distillers, do all kinds of tastings, all without worrying about organizing itinerary or having to drive back to our Airbnb after doing several tastings. At the end of each day, we were not exhausted or overwhelmed (unlike the day we went to a single distillery on our own). It is definitely well worth the cost to hire Bob and his team if you're doing a Kentucky bourbon tour, or any other tours in the area, for that matter. We saved up just for the purpose of hiring Bob while doing this trip, and it was well worth every penny! There's no way we would've gotten as much out of this trip trying to do this on our own without Bob as our tour guide. He is phenomenal, and knows Kentucky bourbon history, as well as other Kentucky history, inside and out! When I mentioned to him that I was a sourdough baker and interested in seeing bakeries, he mentioned several that we were able to visit later. He also recommended several chocolate shops, which we also visited later. Bob is a phenomenal tour guide, knowledgable about Kentucky history, and I'm so glad we were able to see the area with his guidance. We will definitely book him the next time we are in town!!! Our only regret is that we forgot to take a photo with him to share. I am still disappointed in myself for that. We won't forget next time...

Highly recommend Stephanie as your driver! My husband was feeling tired and she made an unscheduled stop at a gas station for him to get a Red Bull drink. We had an amazing day and learned a lot about bourbon and enjoyed all of our three tastings and lunch. We booked the three tastings on our own since our group was particular about the places they wanted to go. I love that this company helps plan if you would like support/advice from a local to help you have a phenomenal day in bourbon country. We did the hard hat tour at Buffalo Trace, went to Limewater restaurant for lunch, J Mattingly, and Wild Turkey. My favorite was the J Mattingly tasting experience because it was so personal, intimate, and an unique tasting experience and I love the smaller bourbon places personally. It was truly a hidden gem! An all around exceptional experience! I highly recommend this company when in bourbon country!
