We used the same place for about 25 years, but the quality dropped in recent years, so this year we decided to try something new and came to Hidden Lake Farm. The entrance could really use better signage -- something brighter and more noticeable. The driveway is also very narrow, only wide enough for one vehicle, so you have to pull off when another car is coming or going. Once we got in, the parking area was great. Plenty of room, even with me pulling a trailer. We grabbed two carts and headed up the road. There were plenty of signs explaining to only cut trees with tags and future growing trees, which is fine, but after walking about 75 yards, we found only a small area with trees we liked. It was disappointing that there weren't many small trees available to cut, and only a limited number of taller trees had tags. They did have some beautiful 3.5-4 ft trees -- exactly what we wanted -- but none of them had tags, so we couldn't cut them. There were lots of pre-cut trees standing on pegs, nicely displayed, but we came for the experience of cutting our own, not buying ones already done. The pricing was confusing and honestly not very good. We looked at 5-6 ft trees of the same type, but the prices ranged from $75 to $130. I understand taller or different types costing more, but five trees that are the same height and same type shouldn't vary from $75 to $115. Other farms we've visited have standard prices per height and type, not individual pricing. This was disappointing and far more expensive than what we've paid in the past. We ended up purchasing two trees for $235, plus a credit card fee after purchasing 2 tree would have thought they could have gave a 2.7% discount, and then it even asked for a tip. They also had wreaths, decorated sleds, farm apparel, and a vendor selling additional items. A small shed offered hot chocolate, apple cider, and cookies. Another trailer was selling donuts made to order with 13 different flavors. Prices were on the higher side -- $3 for one donut, $14 for six, and $24 for a dozen. Overall, the people working there were very nice. Even if your tree is pre-cut, you still load it on a cart or carry it to run it through the shaker to clean it up and or bail it. But I don't think we will return -- maybe we'll wait a few years for more trees to grow. We enjoy the family tradition of cutting down our own tree, it felt this was really more of precut than cut trees and we hope future visits will offer more selection and consistent pricing for trees of the same height and type.
