Patroned with some friends, who are regulars, for their Saturday night trivia. SUPER fun that you get to pick individual beers from the large selection in their coolers and drink them at the table! Trivia was fun. The night we visited it was all based on song titles. We all wished it would have been structured a tad differently, maybe instead of having to just guess the song title maybe switch it up with some guessing, some multiple choice and maybe other ways of playing. The downside to the song title trivia was that it seemed like most of the songs were older, which my group is not that familiar with. I would suggest switching up the song erras as well. Anywho, the establishment itself had great selection of beer, which was super fun to get to pick your own from the cooler, pay and then walk it right over to your table. FYI - 6 packs will be charged an extra $10 if you want to drink it at your table... bummer. Might as well just pick out of the cooler if that's the case. One of our friends found this out the hard way. Even though I would suggest some tweaks, this is a cool little spot! read more

Barley Hopsters might be the coolest thing in this city. It's certainly the best beer selection. The store is also a bar so you can drink there. It has lots on tap including some local breweries. The coolers have lots of single serving bottles or cans. If you're expecting some small town carryout, that isn't what this is. It has the usual stuff along with many crafts. The draft list has something like 50 different ones. A lot of them are national brands but not all. There's a few local breweries like Platform. If you can't find anything to your liking among the drafts you can get something from the coolers. There's tons of individual bottles or cans and many you've never heard of. I will make sure the next time in Delaware to get something from Barley Hopsters. It's better than you would expect from something in kind of a backwards town like it. Much bigger than you'd find in a bar. *Expanded seating in the new location, including an actual bar area. *It's largely self-serve, so I can spend as much time as I want dawdling over what beer I want (and I can dawdle with the best of 'em). *It's in a cool spot. I kind of love downtown Delaware for a day away from the city. *I've always gotten good service. It's not gushingly over-friendly because I mean, they're not bartenders and they're not living off of tips. That's fine with me, I like low-key places. *It's low-key. *The bathrooms are UPSTAIRS now! Just a few nits that keep it from being 5 stars: *People, I understand if you're just running in to grab beer/wine/supplies and you've got your kids with you.. but I mean, for all intents and purposes, Barley Hopsters is a bar. Someone was hanging out there the other day and had their kids with them the *whole time*; said kid was, of course, bored out of her mind and running around getting in everyone's way. It is not an appropriate place to hang out with children. *The TV is loud. *The pathways seem a bit crowded, and the flow isn't that great when it's busy. Found that out when we went the Saturday before St Patrick's Day and it was mobbed with people doing a scavenger hunt. read more

I have not checked out their beer selection. But damn, I saw some brews. I popped in to get supplies for my brewing - they had everything! (Except, as I was afraid from when I emailed them earlier, they were out of the yeast I needed!) They ground my grains, were *incredibly* helpful (including, I'm assuming, the owner's son). It was a bit of a drive, but I wanted to check them out, and I do recommend them if the local places are out, and you feel a little drive is better than the price you'd pay at Winemakers! read more

Such a wide range of beers and so helpful! We were looking for a trappistes beer from the Netherlands but alas they were out. We did then try one from Rochefort Belgium which is really good also! We also bought our first growler with rhinegist saber tooth tiger. A really good beer brewed in Cincinnati but only made once a year. Very nice atmosphere and very helpful employee! Great selections of beer, few wines and ciders but it's the beer / craft ales you're looking for. Large rotating selection of draft and a hugely extensive on site bottle collection. Available for purchase for take out. Also the odd t-shirt, pack of jerky and some sports on the screen. I'm not a beer snob. In the slightest. I know nothing. But, I have had three of the best beers I've ever tasted here - Nosferatu, North High Maibock To The Future II (yes...that's it's full name) and the elevator session IPA. Love it. It's right opposite my favourite sushi joint too (typhoon). Staff are friendly (use a card to start a tab or pay as you go) and there's always rock music on in the afternoon from the stereo - which suits me down to the ground. Like it a lot. You will too. Staff is not helpful. After being charged to drink on the premises and tipping for a glass, the bartender didn't even offer to pour the beer. He just opened the bottle for me and the barm started foaming out. I was left with half beer, half barm, and a mess I had to clean after trying to pour it myself. read more

Very cool concept store in downtown Delaware. Barley Hopsters has a very chill vibe. I definitely felt at home browsing their selection. They had a very nice selections of craft beer, local brews, domestics, ciders, and wines both local and commercial. Their schtick is that they sell these craft beers by the bottle and 70% of them are in the fridge ready to drink. It's cool because you can mix and match a 6 pack and try a lot of beers without committing to a 6 or 4 pack. They also have homebrew stuff, which I didn'y really look at. They had my favorite St. James Strawberry wine at a great price; $10.99 and the Raspberry and Blueberry on sale for $8.99. The by-the-bottle prices for the beer were rather high imo, which is why I chose 4 stars instead of 5. The bottle of Abbey Triple I purchase was $4something and the bottle of Dragon's Milk the boy got was over $10 for one (larger) bottle of beer! For three beers it was $20. Why they deserve 5 stars otherwise was because 1) they were kid friendly and respected having kids in the store. 2) I wanted Goose Island Pere Jacques, which they were out of. The beer guy took a lot of time asking me what I liked about Pere Jacques and helped me pick out a new beer that was similar. He was spot on! The Abbey Triple was very much like Pere Jacques. I didn't like it as well because it tasted so much heavier, but I was impressed he picked one so perfect a match. 3) they're willing to take stock suggestions and will get you want you want. He was very passionate about beer and very knowledgeable. All the employees were very nice and it was a friendly neighborhood store I'd highly recommend. read more

My wife and I stopped in to Barley Hopster's for the first time, today.... after driving by it for months. It is a phenominal craft brew shop, with quite an amazing selection.... Founders, Breckenridge, Stone, Brooklyn, The Brew Kettle, Southern Tier, Elevator Brewing Company, Rogue, Victory, just to name a few. Most of the a selection is in single bottles, to make your own custom 6 pack (as opposed to just buying full 6 packs). Everything seems to be priced right too, especially for the area, which seems to be pretty value oriented. -- Everything is conservatively priced, and there was a steady stream of people coming in, so I would expect pretty fast product turn over of product. Went here on Saturday for part of the Buckeyes game. I loved it. The environment was really relaxed and a mismatch of different folks. I loved how they had all sorts of couches and different odds and ins furniture for people to sit on and watch the game. Their beer selection was gigantic and spot on and the staff friendly. This is a fairly comprehensive beer shop stocking some of the best known craft beers and a few not so well known. I like the fact that one can build their own sixer as most if not all are available in singles. Prices are comparable to other area beer stores although some bombers are priced a bit higher than other stores. Not a deal killer though since this place has the best selection I've found in Delaware. Staff is freindly and generous with recommendations which is appreciated by me. I am happy to have them in Delaware. Parking can be a problem but expected in town. I think their beer list will continue to evolve as customers ask for certain styles and brands. Is this the best beer shop in the Columbus metroplex? No, but it is the best in the Delaware metroplex. Want add that they added some taps since I last reviewed. The taps always have a couple interesting selections one can enjoy on site. They've also added quite a few new brews to the cooler. One can even buy a bottle and drink in the store. Great option. Service is always offered with a smile and conversation, and everyone I have asked questions to seem to enjoy helping me. See, Barley Hopsters is about beer culture. Brewing supplies are available. (Probably the most extensive offerings in the Columbus area.). There are over seven hundred-million bottled beer options, and a few hundred-thousand taps. (Approximate estimate) There is a stereo, which plays large black vinyl media. Couches abound for pleasant couching. Movie nights at The Strand are more awesome than anything ever conceived by anyone ever in the entire history of the world. After the owner responded to my last review, I made sure I visited again to make sure I was fair. I stand behind my first review, this place just rates an A-OK from me. Didn't blow my socks off but didn't make me recoil in horror either. Let's face it, I was just "meah". Knowledge- check. Beer selection- check. Friendly people- sometimes? It's a great place to build your own 6 pack or pick up brewing supplies and there is no doubt there is a wealth of knowledge in the building. They have successfully created a place where both rednecks and college students can hang together in downtown Delaware. Party anyone? This store is a combination between a brew store and a bar. They have local brews on tap to enjoy as well as a cooler of beer by the bottle. They have a nice sitting area with a large TV where you can hang out with friends. Perfect place for happy hour before heading over the Son of Thurman next door. This store makes me want to live in Delaware. It's located in the super cute stretch of Downtown Delaware and close to lots of equally cute shops and restaurants. The owner was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. I was there with a small group of Yelpers - he answered all of our questions and chatted to us for a while about how Barley Hopsters came to be. Of course, great selection of beers to purchase by the bottle as well as a few available on tap. There's a cozy seating area for sipping your brews on site. I'm looking forward to attending some of their events (beer and movie with the Strand to name a few) and to visiting before a Lacrosse or Ohio Wesleyan game. read more

They also have lots of great beers by the bottle for take out, or for a small corking fee, for drink in. Well located near Chandra's and Son of Thurman. Over priced and then it can ring up higher at the register. I picked a single beer marked at $3.00 an it rang up as $5.50. and they would not correct the price. I knew Barley Hopsters was my kind of place since the day I first walked in. Hundreds of beers, ciders and wines to choose from makes it a craft brew lover's dream store. They also have brew supplies to meet the needs of the growing home-brew trend. Not only are my husband and I frequent customers of the store for their beer selection, we've also attended quite a few of their events. First Friday special tastings, Beer & A Movie Nights with The Strand Theatre, and their Barley Hopsters Home Brew Club meetings. On top of everything else, they've recently acquired their license to serve in store so you can stop in and sip one of their beers on tap while you peruse the rest of the store. This is a fun bottle shop which also has several drafts as well. You can go in and have drinks or buy individual drinks to go. They have a very large selection including many local favorites. There is a "corking" fee but sometimes they'll have a cooler on special for $2 that includes the fee. The prices of individual beers vary on brand and type but is very reasonable compared to draft beers. They also have fun events throughout the week like a local running club meets up afterwards. They have a wine night, beer and hymns, trivia etc....they also sell home brewing supplies. Since this is considered like a store children are welcome. They have a cooler or sodas for them and also some small snacks. If you're hungry your welcome to bring in your own food. Your four legged friends are also welcome. They even have water bowls for them. Parking in downtown Delaware is not great but there is street parking and a lot behind back. My one complaint though is on several occasions I've been in and their air is either not working or it hasn't been turned on. It's not fun drinking when your hot so I hope they get that fixed. read more
