We may have only been inside here for 10 minutes...but I can tell if I lived in the area, I would be a frequent visitor here! We were in the area for dinner at Tex Tubbs up the street, as well as a stop in at One Barrel Brewing on a whim after tacos. So we decided to stop here on the way back to the car and to pick up a couple things to enjoy later that night and throughout our visit. My initial impression was a positive one, but that maybe with a small selection. But I was wrong! I think I didn't process the unrefrigerated shelves as retail...but those bottles were ALSO for sale! The beer options for carry out were really great! I saw some of my favorites, and some familiar local-er to my hometown options (hey there, Upland sours!). I left with a six-pack of a new found favorite, Anderson Valley Framboise Rose Gose. You, y'all. You can also buy by the glass and enjoy a brew in-house. And the atmosphere is bright and clean and I could certainly see myself enjoying a brew here! They also appear to be dog-friendly, which is just fine by me! If you live in Madison and you're not buying beer from here, what is wrong with you? For Louisville, think Old Town(when buying singles). Think Louisville Beer Store(when buying singles and wanting to drink a few there too). They have a bar and a few tables that you can sit at. It's easily a hangout or choose a few beers to take home. I wish I had known about this place before visiting Madison. I would've budgeted more beer money. The place is simple enough. You walk in. To your left is the refrigerated beer section(both singles and cases). To your right is the un-refrigerated beer section along the wall. There are also a few tables to sit at along that wall which seems counterproductive if you're looking for the beer to go. Past those two areas is a long bar with more tables. I wasn't in there to drink on this day but with a slight glance at their tap list, they have many things to choose from. This place is pushed to the 5-star mark. If you even remotely like beer, this is a must-visit. read more

Barley Pop has 40 taps and there is always a cider and kombucha on. You can bring your own bottle and enjoy it there for a $2 corkage fee or sample a variety of beers and go for the 5 or 6 oz. pours so you can try a bunch. Take your favorite or favorites to go in 32 oz. howler (half growler), crowler (32 oz. can), or 64 oz. growler. Expect a crowd on most nights on the weekends and especially for events when they are tapping rare beers or food trucks are present. it is a fun place to try beers and ciders and perfect for locating beers that are hard to track down. Also, you don't have to commit to purchasing an expensive six pack or bomber not knowing if you are going to like it, find it here and get a 6 oz. pour and if you like it have more and/or take some home. Highly enjoyed our visit at Barleypop and Tap. They really have a wide range of beers on tap as well as for sale. Be aware though, they still observe the alcohol sales curfew and therefore, no liquor for sale after 9 pm. You can still order beer from the tap though. They don't serve food but you are welcome to bring take-away from many of the local restaurants. Monsoon Siam being right next door. read more

It's not just a good place to buy beer + growlers for off-sale, it's a nice, modern, cozy bar to drink also. It's pretty well-lit inside, sporting a single pinball machine and impressive bottle/merch displays. With a fairly edgy selection of 30 beers on tap, and needless to say, an endless bottle selection, you'll be in beer heaven. It's basically a calmer, more modern version of Hop Cat. I like it so much, this will go into my Atwood rotation right before Woody & Anne's. One of the best beer spots in Madison. When you walk into BarleyPop, you see a few beer fridges packed with stellar Midwest and beyond selections, from singles to 4 or 6 packs. When you look on the opposite wall, you see a gigantic collection of single bottles and cans from a huge variety of top-tier breweries. If you are looking for a mixed 6 pack of a variety of beers, the singles wall should be your stop! The variety ranges from selzer, to sours, to IPAs, to barrel aged brews. Oh yeah, they also have one of the best tap selections in Madison. They are always changing it up, with solid breweries. You can get crowlers or growlers to go. Pre-Covid, it was one of the best places to get small pours of really great beer. It's still my go-to beer destination to find my standard favorites and find those new flavors and breweries that I didn't know I needed in my life! Second, they have a huge wall of single bottles and such to take home. And last, they also have an extensive refrigerated beer selection. This is beer Nirvana! They have theme nights, of which the barreled aged beers are my favorite and also very crowded. No food, so please do not rate this place poorly for a lack of food. Service...excellent. Seating is at two group tables and bar stools. You can enjoy beer inside the store, buy bottles & cans to take home, or ask the staff to fill a growler or a crowler (32oz beer can) from the taps. Barleypop's selection of beers is definitely intended to make you say "Hey, I haven't heard of that beer before", but also paying attention to beer that tastes good, not just novelty. I had a phenomenal experience when i came here with my girl friends. There was a lot of variety with the beers on tap and they let you sample anything you want. I wish they had a deal on flights but their 5oz glasses are perfect if you want to try a few different kinds. The service was nice and straightforward, and the other customers (and their dogs!!) were very kind and talkative. We tried several that i took note of because i will definitely be back here for a date night. My favorite by far was the Cold Brew Coffee Cider by Seattle Cider - it smelled like coffee and left a coffee aftertaste but tasted like cider!! This place is really sterile and weird. Half of it looks like a corner liquor store, and the other half looks like a bar that was inspired by the finest hospital waiting room interior decorating. Two of the televisions that display the relatively uninspiring menu are flashing "no signal" so we're not even sure what's available. I was pretty excited when I heard that there was going to be another place to fill my growler on the way home. After being there, I now know that they are more than that. My coworkers and I decided to come here for an after work drink. The tap selection was great. It spread across the ranges of beer types. Most people would be able to find (at least) a couple of options in their wheelhouse. And, most importantly, the owners know their beer. After having asked for a pair of samples, one of the owners handed me another glass and said that I need to try it. No exaggerating, it was amazing. The bar is also very well lit and clean. Having grown up in the area, I didn't think those were even options. It was a very pleasant surprise. We talked with both of the owners quite a bit. Mostly about business startup, expectations versus reality, and a possible expansion to the already generous number of tap lines. However, one thing really stuck with me. Having grown up and worked in restaurants from age 5 to nearly 30, I know how few places properly clean their tap lines. Whether it's beer or soda, these things can get really bad. So bad, that I find myself asking about the process at nearly every place I go that I plan to get something out of a line. Now, back to what I was saying, these guys not only clean them frequently, they also do it themselves. It's not a fun job, but you never have to worry about somebody cutting a corner or damaging a line on you. All this means that your beer will come out clean. It will actually taste how it is supposed to. And you know that the guy serving you is working towards providing the best product that they can. At this point, when it is clear that I love the work ethic and beer, you may be asking why I didn't give it four stars. Well, I think that they are still having a few growing pains. The TVs were going to sleep regularly. They had a door open with somebody smoking outside. The service was a bit slow as it was only the two guys for a full bar. The quality and the care make up for a lot. And they easily have the potential to polish off what they're doing. To add, they have their tap list integrated with Untappd. It lacks some features of the Digital Pour option but, unlike DP, it is available on Android. read more

The concept of a tap room is great and well executed, as are their beer selections and themed beer events. I've always had great interactions with the owners and most bartenders. Unfortunately, after many happy visits my experience here has been ruined by a rude bartender making me feel unwelcome and giving preferential treatment to what seemed to be his friends having a private party at BarleyPop, as I tried to place an order amid the chaos after waiting my turn in line. This also happened to be on a day of a special sour beer event that my husband and I were very much looking forward to - a curious time to reserve most of the space for a private party.
