I've been to Total Wine & More twice, and both experiences have been top-notch. Last year, I visited to grab a bottle of wine from one of my favorite rock 'n' rollers' brand, and the store had it in stock. This year, I called ahead to ask about wine and beverage cups, and was pleasantly surprised to speak to a real, live person who not only confirmed they had what I was looking for but also told me exactly which aisle it was in. It's refreshing to get that kind of personal touch, especially in a place that might seem like just another big-box store. Located on the south side of West Towne Mall, it's easy to find, well-stocked, and the service goes above and beyond. I'll definitely keep coming back! read more

I get torn. I love to root for the little guy - the family-owned business making their way. That usually puts me square against the big chains driving them out of business. However. Total Wine & More really does a good job providing a wide array of products for a great price. I've been here several times and never leave disappointed (except for one thing that I'll mention later). Their employees know their products and can make smart recommendations based on what you're looking for. Samples? Yes please! At one visit, an employee pointed out a good whiskey that he thought I'd like. Lo and behold, it was one of the samples, so I was able to "try before I buy". I like that. On another visit, I was lured into a back room for a tequila tasting. Not liking, I tried to decline, but was convinced to give them a try - and I was not disappointed. Also, I like how at the front of the store they have racks of "airplane bottles" - small "samplers" that you can buy to try out various products. Again - I like this idea. It was a way for me to try peanut butter whiskey without sinking too much into a larger bottle... So yeah - they're the big guy on the block, but I like the service they provide, and the deals that I get. I would LOVE it if they were able to track down a bottle of Thomas Tew rum. This is a personal goal of mine (I have my reasons), but I understand they are a small brand only found on the east coast. Someday... read more

I feel like a traitor. I mean, Steve's Liquor has been a family stop for over 60 years. My parents went there (the original location), I go there. It's like, where you should go to buy wine. Locally owned, great selection, good prices. And yet, I keep going to Total Wine. It is a store that just loves booze. Wine, beer, booze. And so much, so many varieties. And at great prices. Now sure, Woodman's is cheaper, but try getting help there, never mind good advice. The sales people at Total actually get trained on the product. They open it up and serve staff so they know what they are selling. Plus, they have by far the best selection. Subscribe to the Wine Spectator? You have your best chance of finding those rare and uber expensive wines here. Need a cheap $8 bottle to buy a case of for an event? They have good $8 wines. You want to understand the differences in Pinot Noir? They can help you choose between a hundred Pinots and Burgundies. I always end up with a couple of cases. OH - and the samples. Stock and Quantity pretty close to accurate but if there's an item that says in-store only - call to confirm availability 3. Staff/Clerk's/Management eager to help without attitude. It was still necessary to hear from a Human Bourbon drinker why this over that. 4. Nice wide aisles. Winter coats and my purse was no issue. 5. They have buggies/shopping carts. 6. That curbside feature could rival our DRIVE THRU liquor options of Louisiana. ** Also amazed how early they open but I think NC ABC government ran liquor stores made me see time and hours differently. Louisiana just doesn't have these restrictions like Wisco & NC does ..well not after we got rid of blue laws. Downside: When they're out ... They are out. This is especially the case for staff selected premiums. I am desperately trying to gift a specific Bourbon due to a death & no one in town has it, but the rep (sorry forgot his name) was quite helpful in explaining and giving his opine. I wanted to hear from a male given this gift is going to a male. He really tried to find the out of stock item and went to the stockroom to find it. To no avail. Kinda shocked there are no limits for liquor buying given the limits on weed/marijuana. Anywhoo, his efforts staved off the 4 star designation as I didn't ask him to look... Week 5 of working from home. Low on adult beverages, I used this as an excuse to leave the house. Yes, I showered and changed out of my jammies -- I'm not a total degenerate. Once socially acceptable in appearance (not going to WalMart, after all), I headed to Total Wine to stock up on supplies in case we are never freed from our cages. Being a bit cautious (paranoid) I made sure I had a disinfectant wipe in my hand as I approached the store so I could wipe down the cart. Foiled! There was an employee in the entrance wiping down carts. When we approached the entrance, disinfectant wipe in hand, the friendly employee (gloved and masked) handed us a cart that was freshly wiped down. We exchanged an amusing moment when I showed them my wipe and said I came prepared. BTW, they open at 8AM (T - R) if you're over 60, so my husband is happy. It was a nice shopping experience as they had social distancing spaced out throughout the store. In aisles and check out lanes. The check out had plexi glass barriers and the cashier wore gloves and a mask. A Truett safe shopping experience. read more

Check out this new wine place on the west side, it's got almost EVERYTHING! Really from make your own six packs to the largest collection of wine and spirits, you will not be disappointed with the selection. Unless you're looking for soju, there's only two kinds that are real fancy looking, not the kind you would find at an Korean mart though. Other than that, I'm sure you'll be thrill to check out the place and find what you like since it's a large store full of options. This is a great spot for all your libation needs. It is Madison's answer to Binny's in Illinois or Syrdyk's in Minnesota. They have tasting days all the time, so stop by and enjoy some FREE samples. Their reward program gets you $5 credit after spending so much. They keep track of all your purchases and you can even look up what you bought in a list form with visuals if you to go back and check out what you bought for a certain event or weekend. For the beer connoisseur and/or collector they have all the release and variants that come out. Also, almost always, you have the option of buying the single bottle and not having to jump into getting the whole 22 oz bomber, four or six pack. The mix-and-match sixers that included a huge cider section are unmatched anywhere else! They really promote the "Spirts Direct" brands that are some really great beverages that can blow past some too shelve spirits that get more marketing dollars. Try some and thank me later. read more

In my opinion the best wine, beer and liquor store (super store) in the Madison area. I would have given it a 5 but it didn't have an Australian or New Zealand wine section that I could find. Europe has several isles and Japan has its own section. I'm sure those wines are buried in there somewhere in the regular wine section. Massive selection of red and white wines, beers from all around the world and a large liquor section. I do like higher end wines and one of my favs is Silver Oak, Napa. It does run a little higher price here than other local retailers. Wine tasting was going on during my visit but I was on my way to other places and couldn't have a taste. I would recommend coming here for alcohol. They just need to open one on the east side of Madison/Sun Prairie. read more

Well I don't have it with me. She wouldn't check us out because we were together and I needed it to even though I wasn't buying it. So I came in here a few weeks ago and I saw a ten year old shopping with someone so I brought my sister who is of age today and it's very obvious. And this lady with short brown hair and thick glasses at a cash register said "I need to see both of your ID's" and my sister didn't have hers and then this lady said "well you can check on the vaccination website" which I thought was unnecessary to mention. Also the website says that you are allowed to bring others in that are under 21 as long as they're with a guardian who is 21 or older. Which wasn't even the case. As she is 22. The fact that the toy store is closing is less depressing when there is a spirits store that has everything. It's just about that same giddy feeling of what can I find? And samples. Did I mention samples? Not sure which one of the thousands of choices of wine to choose? Head over to the tasting station and find out if you like it first. Is wine not really your thing? That's fine. They carry pretty much every brand of beer, brandy, whiskey, vodka or whatever your choice of spirits are here. At very competitive prices. While every aisle is labeled nicely if you are lost in the sheer volume of selections there are plenty of associates that are friendly and helpful. They card anyone that looks less than 30. Personally I don't have issues with that. It's the law. And if someone tells me I look younger than 30 I smile and thank them for looking past my wrinkles and decade old baby weight and hand them my ID. read more

This building is the size of a department store, so you'd expect to find nearly anything. However, I've visited this place three times and they've always lacked the items I needed. I've been able to find the stuff at Woodman's, Steve's and even Trader Joe's weird little liquor section - but not here. Lots of nice sales clerks dot the aisles, and they can suggest favorites, but they aren't the most knowledgeable when you go outside the standard beer, wine and old-fashioneds ingredients. Prices are about on par with Woodman's, maybe a buck more. If you're getting a pack of Coronas or a beer pong kit, this might be the place, but don't expect wide selection on actual cocktail ingredients or wines. read more

We stopped in to this store, as we were in the area and wanted to check it out. We didn't have a whole lot of time to spare, so we split up and I only walked through 2 aisles of wine (rose and Italian white) and the cocktail extracts/mixers aisle. Their selection of wines at an affordable price is really nice to see. The aisle of bitters and mixers was quite amazing. If you need to stock your home bar, this is the place for you. They had signs stating that if you buy 6 bottles of wine, you get 10% off. I suggest making a list before you go in. I was not expecting to buy anything and ended up buying close to $100 in wine, liquor and beer. I bought a bottle of french rose, so I given a free "rose all day" insulated picnic tote when I checked out. That was a very nice surprise. The tote came in handy the next day when we went to a BBQ party. The french rose I selected (Chemin des Sables IGP Mediterranee) was really good. The info cards in front of the bottles are nice to see when you are generally looking for a new product to try. I was looking for white wine from Frascati, Italy and was able to find three of them here. This is the called the "golden white wine of the Popes" and is absolutely delicious. It was great to see that the price was under $20 for each of the Frascati bottles. The bottle I selected (Bellini Frascati) did not disappoint. It was as good as I had in Frascati, Italy. They were giving free wine samples out as well, but the line queuing was a few people too long for me. I will be back to do some sampling though. This is a great way to try a wine without blindly committing to a whole bottle. read more

You'll certainly never have a lack of selection at Total Wine. I'm a wine novice so I've spend considerably more time with the "& More" portion of their business. I usually find myself getting lost in the rows of mix & match beer and cider options. It's fun to create a mini beer festival for yourself just by picking what cans look coolest. In addition to national distributors, they have a good mix of local and regional offerings. There are also plenty of mini liquor bottles if you want to sample spirits instead. I've considered building a whiskey & bourbon advent calendar from their miniatures - maybe this year. The only critiques that are only critiques because of the excellent shops around Madison are that it can be hard to find someone to help you (no friendly guidance like you tend to find at the smaller spots in town) and the prices can be higher than elsewhere in town (not by much, and sometimes TW takes the low price, but Woodman's is just up the street and has most of what the average person is looking for a little less). Definitely worth a stop if you're on the westside though! read more

I will say that their wine selection is second to none and their beer selection is vast. But when it comes down to service and expertise, Total Wine falls down. If I am looking for a good wine suggestion, I much prefer and trust the folks at Steve's. If I am looking for a large selection of spirits and with zero service/support, Woodman's fits the bill. Total Wine tries to straddle this line and just doesn't quite get there for me. read more

I restocked our wine cellar with two cases of wine with five different kinds of wine. The night after I paid for the wine I discovered the 10% discount for "mix six". If they would have told me to switch out one bottle of wine for another I would have saved $30. The on-line ordering system wouldn't give me any information about their Rewards Program until after I paid for my relatively large purchase. I have tried emailing the store, filling out customer surveys, etc. but no one is calling me back. They won't give me credit for the purchase I made in their rewards program. I probably won't go there again because of the company's lack of responsiveness to a problem. It's too bad, because the person that waited on me was super friendly (but she should have told me about the mix six discount and enrolled me in the Rewards program). The price was good. read more

Love this place! Always a great selection at good prices. We have given them extra business during Covid-19, not just because we've all been drinking more (like the rest of the world), but also their curbside pickup is great for those that aren't comfortable venturing inside the store. Has a huge variety of wine, beer, alcohol, etc. Basically anything alcohol related your heart can desire. They have $3 wine to $1200 bottles of scotch. Went during the opening weekend so there was tastings throughout the store. The store was very busy so it was hard to take everything in. It will be cool to go back in a few weeks once everything calms down. They have a cigar humidor inside. Something I had not seen before. They also have a large selection of mixes, bitters and accessories. Basically it's a superstore with alcohol and alcohol accessories. If you like to drink you will like this place. read more

Ok y'all story time today I went to total wine on the west side NEVER AGAIN WILL I EVER GO THERE AGAIN I walked in to go buy something with my brother I had needed to transfer some money that he had sent me for his drinks I had walked in with him and when I realized I need to transfer the money my phone had died so I had to walk outside to charge my phone mind u my brother is still in the store the manager walks up to him and says "just so you know we can't sell u ur drinks till the other girls id we checked the cameras and seen the other girl u were with left." mind you (they didn't ask me for my id while I was in there and didn't say nothing while I walked out to charge my phone)but I had my id on me so I go back in to talk to the manager who said checked the cameras and I said "so why did u tell my brother you couldn't sell him his drinks because I left when I had my id in my pocket you could have asked me for my id or anyone could have and I would willingly show them instead u stereotyped me to be one of these little kids out here try to buy liquor under age.(I told him that ik I look 14 but instead of asking respectfully u disrespected me by trying to accuse me of being under age I told him I'm black and you have a lot of little kids come here to try to trick u that there older then they actually are but I would never disrespect nobody age color or anything and let them know I'll never return because of this experience.)this is not the way that people should treat people period idc who disagrees with me but at the end of the day my opinion on them is they are hypocrites to people who look young and actually could be of age never will I ever return there period Y'all need to seriously need to learn respect instead of assuming something about someone an stereotyping what they look like vs what they are read more

"Best in Market Pricing" isn't. I started shopping at Total Wine due to the large selection. I knew the prices were slightly higher but their sale items and volume discounts made their high prices more palatable. I recently purchased a case of sparkling wine for a party that was labeled "Best in Market Pricing". They make it sound like they have surveyed the local market and you feel confident that you are getting the best price. It turned out to be marketing nonsense. I stopped at Woodman's to look for an item that wasn't available at Total Wine and found the same sparkling wine for $2 less per bottle -- ouch. Turns out the Total Wine's "Best in Market Pricing" is Total Bull$h1t. I went back to the store to talk to a manager, but after waiting 20 minutes for him/her at the customer service desk, I finally left. If you want the best price, go to Woodman's. If you want the best service, go to Steve's. If you want a mediocrity, go to Total Wine. read more

I used to love going to Total Wine, but I will not be returning. My son turned 21 yesterday - a milestone - and he was excited to go to Total Wine and buy his first bottle. From the moment he and his girlfriend walked in he said that were followed and watched by staff members through the store, and were made to feel very uncomfortable. He chose a bottle and went to check out where they asked for his ID, which he happily gave them. They then asked for his girlfriends ID - she turns 21 next month. Not only would they not sell him the bottle, they asked them both to leave and would not allow him to return to buy it since they knew she was underage. The cashier was rude and insulting, on top of the staff following them around the store this was just too much. We now understand it is their store policy not to allow anyone in the store under 21 without a legal guardian. That is fine and I understand their purpose in that policy, but then address it when someone walks in or post it clearly on the door, neither of which was done in this case. He left feeling just awful and like he had done something wrong in trying to buy a bottle of wine legally. There had to have been a better way for the staff to handle this situation. Total Wine has lost him as a customer for life, they have lost me and I will be sure to spread the word. I have no problem with their policy - but their customer service to a newly legal adult was absolutely awful. read more

My fiance and I stopped in recently to look for alcohol for our upcoming wedding. After talking with the store manager, Scott, we decided this was our best option. He walked the store with us to help go over our options, and he was great. He listened to all of our ideas and answered all questions we had. He understood we were trying to work within a reasonable budget, and gave us honest opinions on where we could be most cost effective, and didn't try to push the most expensive liquor on us, instead telling us some of his favorites, or some hidden gems that are popular for a lesser price. He was very patient with us as we were figuring things out on the fly. The prices were as good as anywhere else you can find around. We were really overwhelmed when we walked in, but he helped us through all of it. I would definitely recommend coming here for anyone in a similar situation, and we'll personally be back again. read more
