We have greatly enjoyed National Conferences in US from Boston to San Francisco, and it is a joy to attend the Sons of American Revolution Conference at Sauder's Village in Archbold. Always something about hotel lobbies, fireplaces, and good friends that is satisfying. The Friday night buffet is BBQ, and following a week of Great Smokies's dining, we were eager to enjoy "German style" meals. Brisket was better than southern; pulled pork had no flavor; ribs were burned; great salad bar; very few veggies. Locals love this place and we recommend. Neat and different ambience. Spent an afternoon in Archbold and had to stop for late brunch early dinner at Sauder's Village Barn. Our choice was the buffet which they are known for and do not disappoint at all. Our salads were fresh, crisp and plentiful. Of course, I like the fact there are green olives available. Fried chicken was delicious (hubs favorite) and beef and noodles giving me thoughts of Sunday family dinners. Tapioca pudding and fruit slices with an iced tea completed our meal. Not to forget the ambiance of this restaurant. The waitstaff, interior and over all feeling take you back many years. Prices are fair, buffet is above average, friendly service and unique setting. We stopped by the Barn Restaurant for my dad's birthday tonight (Thursday evening). The front staff weren't as friendly or upbeat as expected, but our waitress was super kind and attentive! We thought that the buffet was a great deal for $17.99!. It offered fried chicken, roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, chicken Alfredo, salad bar, soups, and puddings. I enjoyed the fried chicken (better than KFC), the mashed potatoes (tasted just like my Aunt Millie's), and the apple butter (for the fresh, warm rolls). ! The pasta salad was just alright... The front sign also mentioned pies, but we didn't see any which was a little disappointing (front runners for me were the peanut butter and cherries pies, but they were nowhere in sight). We also missed the bakery since it closed at 3:30 PM, but overall, it was a nostalgic, comfort-filled meal well worth the price! read more

I came here with a group and was escorted to a back side room. We all sat down and ordered our drinks. Once we ordered, we went up to the buffet. This is where I got a little upset. The menu indicated that there was mac and cheese. I don't eat meat so I was hoping to eat that. They told me that they didn't have any for tonight. I completely understood that they must have ran out or taken it off for dinner. I went back to the table and asked if I could order mac and cheese. The waitress kinda ignored me and left. She was very busy. I was patient and waited and asked again. My group basically finished and she finally agreed to put an order in. The mac and cheese was 7.50 for a tiny bowl of kraft mac and cheese. Someone also mentioned that other tables got rolls. The waitress said "I am doing the best that I can." They brought rolls out 5 minutes later, even though a bunch of others already finished eating. Honestly it was a bit of a mess. I would give this place a second chance though because I understand mistakes can be made with a big group. read more

Americana with a capital "A"! A buffet in a barn! The perfect place to get a hearty midwestern meal like you wish your grandmother would have cooked. Salad bar is concise and delicious; pickled eggs and beets, fresh veggies and creamy cottage cheese hit the spot but that potato salad is a perfect 10! The sandwich spread was perfect also with finely diced veggies and just the right amount of Mayo to hold it all together. Both soups were HOT and delicious. Broasted chicken is full of country flavor, crispy skin, and so tender and moist. Plenty of delicious sides to choose from and I visited at lunch. The menu says there are more options at dinner but I was fully satisfied. I didn't mention the fresh rolls served with apple butter! They also have bread pudding in the buffet with a tub of whipped cream along with a couple of whipped cream pudding desserts at the salad bar to satisfy your sweet tooth. We have been going to The Barn Restaurant for many years. We had family come in and decided to take them there. I was so disappointed in at the salad bar. First, there use to be many choices now they are down to 2 of the dressings one of which was empty. The main bar had no fish and I waited for a half hour for them to refill. Bread Pudding was down to barely nothing needed to be refilled. Whipped topping was empty never was refilled. The taste and all food was not the same quality it usually is. Someone needs to make some changes. The hostess was not professional looking. As she was in yoga pants and a sweatshirt. The Hostesses always dressed in casual but were professional looking. It will be a long time before we go back if ever. Overpriced with limited buffet. Dont waste your time or money. read more

We have been twice recently. The service has been fantastic both times. Very friendly and attentive staff. The soups have been good both times. The salad bar is oddly laid out as you have to go on both sides back and forth to assemble a salad. It would be better if all salad fixings were on one side and the other side was fruit, cottage cheese, puddings, etc. The hot food has been very good especially the fried chicken, roast beef, and ham. The first visit had mac and cheese but was missing this last visit and that was definitely missed. We definitely will return when in the area. read more

Ever had the urge to step back in time? Perhaps to feel like an extra in the movie Cocoon? Wonder whether any of the other patrons will assume room temper before leaving? The clientele are octogenarians , the service staff is donned in clothing fresh out of the 19th century, and it's truly like dining in a clean barn. With that said, the fried chicken is very good, the pasta a little salty and the people are friendly. If you need a quick bite in the middle of nowhere, check it out. Checked into the Sauder Village campground this afternoon and we were excited to find out they had a restaurant on site that offers what looked to be a delicious dinner buffet. We got to the restaurant at 6 PM, only an hour before they close and had to wait 10 minutes or so to be seated. There was also a fairly long line at the buffet. Looked like it was popular with the local folks so we decided to give it a try. Turned out to be a mistake. The offerings included fried chicken that was mostly over cooked and dried out. I was lucky enough to find a thick breast that wasn't bad, but the pieces my wife tried were inedible. Other options included "BBQ" ribs that weren't barbecued at all and also so dry they were inedible. There was also a greasy pan of what I can only guess was supposed to be pulled pork, but it looked and tasted like it had been cooked for three days in a crock pot, basically just a pile of mush. The sauce available for both of these was a watery, tasteless concoction that had to be house made. There was some type of zucchini casserole that was about 1/4" thick and had melted cheese but even that was greasy and dry. There was also a pan of orange colored mush that I originally mistook for mac and cheese, but nope. Couldn't even tell what it was. They had a mushroom soup that looked promising, it appeared to be homemade and was full of mushroom slices but was LOADED with salt to the point we couldn't eat it. What a waste. The bread pudding, a favorite of mine, was just a hard crust on the outside and puréed mush on the inside. Nothing to give it any flavor, like raisins mixed in or a sauce or toppings. The only reason I'm giving them two stars is because of the atmosphere, it really is an authentic looking barn. read more

Had dinner here while staying at the Sauder Heritage Inn. Our server was friendly & accommodating. She brought us fresh baked rolls with homemade apple butter-scrumptious. My husband & I both ordered off the menu & had the salad bar as a side for $5.99 extra. I LOVE the salad bar with the yummy pickled eggs & delicious banana pudding! I ordered the roast beef with mashed potatoes & green beans. The roast beef melted in my mouth-so tender. My husband had the fried fish & I sampled it-delicious. We were both so full from the salad bar that we took most of our entrees to go which will make for a nice lunch tomorrow. read more

I tend never to write reviews of places. But I must say this definitely was not the experience that I hope for considering the drive. I found for the price the selection very poor. This was definitely a over priced buffet, and low selection and price dis not include desserts. I have eaten at other similar places and by far 100% better for the same price. For drive I will go to much better and tried and true places. Unfortunately, this was a lesson learned. read more

Oh the Barn - so many memories here. Another family favorite, we used to drive out to Archbold just to eat here at least once a month during the summer when I was a kid. Of course, the day was best when paired with a trip to the wonderful little Sauder living history museum, but just a chance to get some of the best roast beef around was reason enough to be excited. The Barn, as the name implies, is literally located inside an old Barn. The wooden walls have a lot of character, and though the wall paper in the bathrooms and cloths on the table have changed over the years, the overall look and feel of the dining area has not. There's still the upper story loft for special events and parties, the smooth-worn wood beams, and two rooms, each equipped with a good sized buffet. Now, of course the Barn has other things to eat - if you don't like standing up to get grub but like the opportunity to try a lot of different things, I believe they still offer the home style dinner - your choice(s) of meat, veggies, and so on brought to the table to be split among your party. There are probably other offerings too, but the honest truth is that ever since the buffet was established, I don't think my family ordered anything but. What is on the buffet does change by the day, I believe. However, the best night to go (in my opinion) is Sunday, or whatever day they offer the "three meats" - ham, chicken, and beef. Well, really, all that matters is that they have the beef. Now, in earlier reviews I've raved about the chicken at der Dutchman in Plain City. And yes, they still have the superior white meat. However, nothing compares to the Barn's super tender, rich, and flavorful roast beef. When I say tender, I mean it. Melt in your mouth tender. And no, that's not a turn of phrase. Don't get me wrong, the chicken and ham are good too. They're just the backup singers for the main attraction. Of course, no buffet is complete without soup, salad, bread, and dessert - and the Barn doesn't disappoint. The last time I visited, there was only one soup available - tomato - which I decided to skip in order to get more beef. However, they have some fantastic soups. I remember especially loving a beef and barley or beef and noodle when I was a kid. The salad bar is also quite tasty - fresh with all the classic toppings. However, if you're lucky, they'll also have some sort of pudding available. I used to really love the oreo pudding - chocolate, whipped cream, and crushed oreos. The dinner rolls are also amazing. They now offer dinner rolls coated in a custard-like honey glaze along with the original sweet, soft mini-loaves. Don't forget the apple butter. And of course the vegetables - super soft mashed potatoes, creamy corn... whatever is available is sure to be good. I think you can still order your dessert - they used to have a fantastic selection of decadent pies. However, even more than when I was a kid, the Barn now offers a table of home-made desserts (bites of cake, a ridiculously flavorful peanut butter bar), as well as a few warm desserts on the buffet itself. Let me just say I don't normally like bread pudding at all - it's slimy, gooey, and reminds me of my most hated food - the banana. However, the Barn is one of the rare exceptions to that rule, serving up a bread pudding so fluffy and light that it seems more like a souffle or type of sturdy custard than bread pudding. Whatever the case, it is amazing and needs to be tried. The buffet also offers an ice cream bar - they give you a bowl of vanilla, you add your own toppings. I believe this costs extra, though. If you are courting a hearty appetite, or have a large party to feed, then the Barn is definitely worth checking out. Although rather in the middle of nowhere, there is some lovely countryside to see along the way, and the delicious meal is definitely worth the occasional excursion. read more

The folks are nice, helpful and courtesy is numero uno - or is it the food? Good old fashioned mashed potatoes, green beans, veggies, real fried chicken, delectable roast beef, and the dessert spread's fandango! Oh, you can have ala carte or buffet! We used to eat here 20-25 years ago every couple months. Food was always delicious, staff is excellent, and the ambiance is stunning STILL. What a beautiful restoration of an old 1800's barn converted into a restaurant. What happened to the food on the buffet??? Fish was over deep fried, shrimp was same. Ate a 2nd one to make sure it was as bad as the first one, Bingo! I liked the bread pudding but Sweetie (my wife) gave it a thumbs down. She knows bread pudding. She also said the fried chicken was dry. Blah. The Lobster Bisque was good. Canned corn? Really? I would give the Brussels a thumbs up. Sweet and flavorful. Sweetie gave them a thumbs down. If I didn't have fond memories of an outstanding place to eat, I'd probably not be writing this review. Hopefully a new cook or two can revitalize the food offerings. Or drop the buffet completely. We didn't order from the menu so can't offer a review. I did see a couple plates of small prime rib cuts. Looked appealing. My advice is enjoy the architecture of this restaurant, don't order the buffet, if you decide to eat here, let us all know how the menu food tastes. The Barn Restaurant offers a rustic buffet and menu of food. Kids four and undereat free, which is fantastic. Salad bar offered a wide variety of toppings and everything seemed fresh. I was personally not impressed with the other items on the buffet, which included lasagna, mashed potatoes, and some meat dish. Servers were very nice, but a bit slow paced. read more

I had the buffet and was not impressed. Service was friendly and quick but very robotic. The salad bar was great, very fresh. The pickled hard eggs were hard as a rock but the pickled beets were fantastic. The lasagna was good except it had a very off-putting mealy texture. The corn pudding was delicious, the fish sticks were nasty! Was looking forward to the fried chicken but disappointed again. It was dry and definitely needed seasoning. The cheeseburger soup was good but again could have used some seasoning. The homemade yeast rolls for very good. The carpeting is really worn and dirty. I will probably not eat here again. read more

You know you're in the Midwest when you find yourself in a room full of hefty white people practically attacking the salad bar and buffet. Located on the campus (?) of Sauder Historic Village, the Barn really is a cool place to take cityfolk who need a gentle reminder to slow down and taste what they're eating. While the buffet food isn't out of this world, it's still close-to-home-cooking. My sister and her family joined Mom and me during my trip back. We all ordered the buffet and her kids were good eaters. I've always like the decor: it isn't every day one is eating in a restored barn. The servers look like they have been pulled from the past. I asked my family to meet here bc we were coming from all over the state and I had good memories of this place as a little girl. I did call and make reservations. I ordered the buffet for everyone just to make it easy. The place is fun and it was clean, and the wait staff was excellent. However, I was disappointed in the buffet.. Very small and the food was okay but not wonderful. The place was busy and it was a Saturday, so I really thought they'd have more options (something healthy besides salad), and some things that kids like. The Barn Restaurant is part of the tourist amenities near Sauder Village, a theme park devoted to preserving the past. It's outside the quaint little village, so you don't need any special entry pass to dine. The menu is not as extensive as it was a year ago when I was there. The buffet is $9.99, and still has a good variety of soup, salad bar, hot dishes and a couple of simple desserts. I notice that the peach cobbler is no longer on the menu. That was always a favorite of the ladies in my quilt group who made the annual pilgrimage to Sauder for the annual quilt show on the first weekend of May. Still worthwhile. Reliably OK. read more

This is the kind of place ma' and pa' yearn for when you take them out of their element to something way too fancy like Olive Garden or Cracker Barrel. It is basically a huge barn, hence the name, where they have a large buffet of food that tastes great with or without your dentures in, and where all the food has some sort of gravy on it. I was a little nervous going in...big barn buffet on the grounds of a tourist spot in a small town? Normally a business like that wouldn't really have to try very hard. Fortunately, they do, and it really shows. The staff was polite and friendly. The anchor foods of the buffet were fried chicken, beef and noodles, and sausage with kraut. Not a huge variety, but all three were excellent and there were a ton of great sides to complement it. My kids loved the rolls with apple butter, mashed potatoes, corn, peaches and cream, bread pudding, etc. The buffet also boasts two great soups and a huge salad bar. At the time of this review the buffet was roughly $10 for adults, $4 for kids over 4, and free under $4. Not a bad deal at all. read more

The Barn is a decent buffet. I recently stopped by here on my way across Ohio as an alternative to fast food and was well satisfied.. First of all, this is the restaurant attached the Sauder furniture facility, and is sort of touristy. That being said, we were seated immediately and had a pretty good meal at the all you can eat buffet. Had some nice fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Other than those two items (and they were good...) there wasn't anything on the buffet that was worth writing about. Nice. Warm. Pleasant. Predictable? NOT the best chicken ever, btw. Not even the best buffet, really. I sort of raise an eyebrow at them charging you extra to get some ice cream...that being said, I did leave satisfied, and I would certainly try it again. read more

The Barn Restaurant is a wonderful, hometown restaurant. It sits right in the heart of an old, turn of the century village - which is another 5 star review! The food here is delicious, home(ish) cooked, meat on your bones type food. They have a buffet / salad bar that would rival any chain, the best applebutter and biscuits in the state, and they offer friendly, genuine service from people who exude warmth. The building itself is an old barn and is such a unique dining experience for those of us that live in large cities; away from this special blend of 'home' you can't get elsewhere.
