I worked at two different Barnes & Noble locations in 2005-2007, and a visit to a Barnes & Noble always makes me very nostalgic and happy. I visited this Annapolis location yesterday. It's enormous and well organized and well stocked. It has a huge cafe, great customer service, and more books than you could ever read. I love an independent bookstore, but it's great to mix it up and shop at a bookstore with such a deep, broad inventory! This location is in a great shopping center, where you can do your grocery shopping, see a movie, shop at an Amish market, and more. I love bookstores, and really pray they exist forever. I just wanted to highlight this bookseller because I was meeting a friend in the surrounding area for lunch and stopped in here to kill time, on top of picking up a gift for my godfather. Upon my shopping, the friend told me that she had arrived but I hadn't finished my shopping - so what did I do? I asked a teller if they could place my books on hold, and promised to return! I did not get the tellers name but she assisted me with a smile, and sticky-noted my name of my purchases until my return. I am not sure if this is a standard or special practice to hold items, but this made my evening as I was not sure if I would have to shop again for my items. I will continue to support my local bookstore! read more

Bottom Line: Large bookstore with a Starbucks inside. There is just something charming about a bricks and mortar bookstore. In high school I enjoyed checking out this bookstore and fast forward a few years, cough cough, I meant decades, and I am still a fan. The store is large with thousands of books of course but also a big magazine section, a whimsical kids area, plenty of toys, lovely gifts and stationary and Starbucks. Paper Source and Barnes and Noble are owned by the same company so the stationary and gift section is full of pretty little things. While all of that is well and good, I really go for the puzzles! Barnes and Noble has a good selection of puzzles from quality brands like Ravensburger, Galison and Clemontoni in piece counts ranging from 300 to 3,000. read more

Took my daughter to the bookstore to find some graphic novel books-specifically The Baby-sitters Club novels. The children's area is neat well organized although I wish they had a bigger selection. We were able to find the first novel in the series but the other books were limited. My daughter was really jazzed about these Plants vs Zombies graphic novels so we picked up two. I like supporting Barnes and Nobles because they are one of the few brick and mortar book stores out there. The do wish prices could be competitive to book found on places like Amazon or other online sources. The best things for me about visiting B&N is checking out all the new release books and checking out the bargain books. The women's restroom was clean. Out cashier Elizabeth W was super friendly and checked out out quickly. Obviously, we will visit this location again. read more

Now Open for foot traffic during COVID with a mask. Store wasn't too busy on a Saturday. They seemed to do away with the greeting cards. But thankfully magazines are still in shelf as well as games and toys. I was happy to see some familiar faces pre covid who were helpful. Like Geral, who was super helpful in my book search. She was, eager to assist and went far and beyond. Definitely an asset at this location. I also noted the Starbucks cafe was open. Less tables. With a few seniors having coffee (unmasked at the tables.) not sure how this will play. Anyway Barnes and Noble has moved some things around from my last visit. Cooking is now where rock and roll used to be, fashion and art has moved also, but this is wanton to happen in a store this size. Last but not least: They still have great LPs too! read more

I love a good bookstore. I've always been a B&N fan, even when internet tried to kill print. This is probably the closest bookstore left to my house, so I can't be too picky these days. Still, I like the B&N style. Dark wood trim, quiet atmosphere (until someone brings their shrieking kids in...), plenty of books to browse; what's not to like? Maybe the price. The standard shelved books will run you MSRP, which isn't a terrible thing, but I remember the bargain aisles being more of a... well... bargain. Seems like prices have gone up even there. Still, there are some great deals to be had if you look enough. New releases are still generally 30% off, too, which is nice. They used to have special events there (signings, local artists, etc.), but I'm not there often enough to know if that's still going on. I hope so. They also have a coffee shop inside, which is a great way to unwind with some literature and a latte. Very relaxing indeed. Overall, a great way to spend a little quiet time. Books are not dead! And they never will be. So, we're going to need bookstores still, no matter how many websites crop up that try to nudge them out. :) read more

Over the past year+ this store has endured a long slow battle of decline. With all of the store closures I'm amazed (and happy) they've hung on. Now, as more and more folks are getting vaxed, it warms my heart to see that, with the support of the community, the store seems to now be rebounding with grace. Families with little kids, clusters of teens in perpetual motion, and seniors holding hands.... Clearly this store is important to us all. It's good to see. Some of the members of the staff have been with this store since the mid-1990s. The staff has, without fail, been courteous, professional, and cheerful. Always. Sure we can get a book with a mouse click. But Amazon will Never *Ever* be able to replace the thing we all need but may have taken for granted until now. A sense of Community. Nor do they have any desire to. I intend to make as many of my future book purchases from this physical store as I can; because it is an important part of my sense of my community. read more

Came in looking for something to continue my recent cravings for multicultural non-fiction reading experiences. The end result wasn't quite what I was looking for, but I wanted to take the time to give the sales team a positive review. Friendly, courteous, just as other reviewers have mentioned. M. (for privacy's sake) saw I had a befuddled look and took the time to listen to my preferences, relate some of her personal experiences, and find something that fit what I was looking for. I learned a lot about biographies currently available, and can make a much more informed decision next go-round. I didn't quite clarify I was looking for something G-Rated, as that's kinda where I am in my preferences, so that's where the book missed the mark. Otherwise, it was right on, and checkout went smoothly with another friendly associate (with very colorful hair!). This review just covers customer service. I came in late in the day, so I can't speak to what the typical atmosphere would be like, and I don't buy books very often, so I'm not knowledgeable on pricing. I do know good work when I see it, however, having worked in retail, myself! Only criticism is that I would have liked help a bit more soon, but, yet again, late in the day makes it hard to gauge what the team is like in full gear. Happy reading! read more

I love this Barnes and Noble. I loathe libraries so I go to B&N, have my Starbucks, find a comfy overstuffed chair and read entire books. It's great! However, there are only four overstuffed chairs and they are well coveted, You have to stake your claim. The art section leaves something to me desired. In the fall, all you want to do is put on a scarf, snuggle up with a good book, and sip something warm. You can do that here, well...except the snuggling part. Because there are no couches like some B&Ns, which I'm actually kind of sad about. However, the Starbucks Cafe is surprisingly good for a Starbucks. They are always on top of acquiring the latest and greatest reads. The magazine selection is also pretty good...except my husband did complain that they stopped carrying the White Dwarf magazine. Anywho... The rest is great! My only complaint - the chairs are kind if uncomfortable if you sit in the cafe or by the magazine section for more than 45 minutes. They really need a reading nook, preferably away from the kids section. read more

It's convenient. It's the only book store left standing pretty much. ALL B&N are NOT created equally I am sorry to say. This one needs some real improvement in the area of CS. I GET that it's the holidays and it's busy. Take a step back, breathe and put yourself in the shoppers shoes. Twice in a week I either experienced it or lived the wrath of a customer service agent snapping at us that the computer that faces OUT into the store in the customer service kiosk is NOT for our use. Yesterday it was as bad as "Can't you READ? Employee's only". The only place to sit in the store is in the magazine section or the coffee shop which discourages you from getting comfortable. I have NEVER had an employee as me if I needed help and only grudgingly gotten service at the CS Kiosk. It was nice that they had a gift wrap section for the holidays! Hopefully all of the employees get a breather and are refreshed coming back after the holidays. It hasn't been fun to shop there lately. read more

Unlike most B&N, this store has no sofas, comfy chairs to sit back and relax with your stack of books you are thinking about buying. I had to keep sitting my coffee (from the coffee shop in the store) to look at my books. They do not want you to loiter (isn't that what makes book stores great though???) while making your selections! I even had employees stopping me every 10 minutes asking if I needed help picking something out, kind of annoying. And many sections in this store a very small (Ex: Romance, Fiction), seemed like the cookbook and children's sections were what this store stocks the most of. read more

Well, I used to be an employee at Borders of Annapolis so I used to buy all of my books from there. Of course they went out of buisness last September so I had to find another place to get my books. Pros: -Great Service at the cafe and at the registers in front of the store. -Clean store and restrooms. -Quiet inviting atmosphere. -Has all new releases of books and movies in stock and located right where you can easily find them. -Nice section with low priced books on interesting topics, good for the coffee table or if you need a quick low cost gift for someone. -Starbucks brand coffee and Cheesecake Factory brand cheesecake. :) Cons: -Membership Card costs $25 with a 10 percent discount so you have to spend at least $250 before it starts paying off. Plus you have to pay the fee again to keep renewing it every year. If you buy alot of books, it can be a good thing, if not it won't be worth it. -Can be hard to find things sometimes. -Only carries new releases of movies and music so if you want something older, you will have to go to FYE for that. -Cafe seating can be hard to find sometimes because it gets very crowded at times. read more

Most of these negative reviews seem to be from customers who don't understand policies or procedures at the store. Whether they aren't aware, don't care to enlighten themselves before making a purchase, or simply not told (or told incorrectly) remains to be seen, nonetheless, I love this book store. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find good customer service at a big box store nowadays. Most of the time, BN delivers. They're quick to ask if you need help and usually great at recommendations. I can buy a book on Amazon and can have some algorithm spit out some recommendations based on my purchase history, but Amazon cannot, and will never, be able to recommend a book like a fellow reader. If your expectations aren't for an hourly employee to break rules to serve you, then you shouldn't be disappointed on your next visit!!! read more

This is my local B&N. The store is nice and there is one lady that works in the children section that really knows her stuff. My annoyance with this store is the manager. I watched her rudeness to a customer at the service desk and thought it was uncalled for. Then, after a lady had a seizure in the store, I witnessed the seizure and called for help. I stayed with the lady until her seizure was done, then talked her through the coming out (I've seen seizures several times). Finally the manager appears. The whole thing is finished and she tells me I should leave the area. She was so rude, I was really bothered and I felt bad leaving the other lady with her. read more

I am saddened to have to leave such a bad review, as I spent many an hour in this Barnes and Noble and used to love spending time here. The Good: -Cafe staff is excellent and beyond friendly. I adore them all, and have never had a bad experience. If I could review them separately, they would get 5 stars. -The store has a decent selection of magazines, and usually has what I'm looking for. The Bad: -They rearranged and took out a large section that used to house books to sell Nook things. It's disappointing to go in to a book store and find less books and more accessories for an electronic device. If I want ereader accessories, I'll go to Best Buy. If I want books, I go to a bookstore. The Ugly: One of the things that used to be so nice about this store is that you could meet up with your friends in the cafe and hang out for awhile. Unfortunately I have recently learned that only certain people are allowed to do so. There are a few women who come in every thursday or so and knit, purchase books, and eat lunch at the cafe, and one day the manager kicked them out - apparently "groups" aren't allowed in the cafe anymore. As far as I can figure this is the only group that's been told they can no longer meet there. The group has gone back and forth with the management, and bottom line is that as long as they're part of a "group" they are not customers no matter what they buy, and are therefore not allowed in the cafe. I'm guessing it's up to the managers and they get to kick out anyone they don't like, but who knows. In any case, I don't think I'm going to go back anytime soon unless they change that policy. read more

I ordered a book for my mom and I got a phone call that it was ready to be picked up. When I got there about 15 minutes later, the lady behind the counter said,"my you got here fast. I just called you!". I need to get that membership card if I'm going to be ordering any more books! read more

They lied. I came in today to return a new, unread, unopened book that I purchased 8/4/2015. I was told they would not be honoring their return policy because they didn't consider it a textbook. I showed them the required text list and explained that I no longer would need to take the test or the class I was scheduled for and they refused. The policy on the receipt says 60 days for textbooks and it was less than that since today is 9/6/2015. I was not offered a refund receipt or an explanation as to that they considered textbooks or why my book didn't qualify. I won't be purchasing from them ever again and will likely use Chegg or Amazon the next time I need books. read more

I was here to return 2 kids books from Easter (we already had copies), so I didn't have a receipt. The guy who originally was helping me was friendly and helpful, but needed a supervisor. The supervisor (bald guy) scolded the grown man helping me like he was a kid, and told him he could never do a return without receipt, he was to immediately get a supervisor. He then proceeded to make me feel like a criminal, and was able to give me 7.99 for a 17.99 book , which, I mean, I kind of get, but still annoying. Anyway-basically the supervisor could have handled every step of the process better. I won't be returning to this location. read more

Beware! Very sketchy employee tactics to sign you up for a membership. The girl who checked me out asked if I had a membership, I did not. She told me I would get 20% off (I assumed everytime I made a purchase but it was only 1 time) . I agreed. Later that day I checked my receipt to see she charged me $25 for the membership. She never fully explained the membership, I assumed it was like all other stores, free with benefits. It is NOT! I was annoyed that she was not clear but took the blame for me not checking my total. Today,( a year later) I get a notice from my bank that $25 was automatically taken out of my account for B & N. It is a yearly automatic membership. I was not given any information written nor verbal. Customer service online is impossible to get through. They said they are closed to call back their hours of opening, 9am-9pm est. time. It's 1:19 in the afternoon!!!! I would give them zero stars if it was an option! read more

I love this place! They literally have 4 shelves of books that are on clearance anywhere from 10-50% off. The customer service here is outstanding as well. They are always eager to help you find what you need or get you checked out immediately. The only bummer here is that the Starbucks that is part of the store does not take Starbucks gift cards. Odd, but I'll live. Overall, a great place to come and relax to enjoy a good book! read more

I absolutely love this store. My wife and I come here all the time to buy books and grab coffee. The customer service is fantastic. I feel that this place is truly one where the entire community had interact with each other. The highlight is bringing our young son here. He loves the children's section and they have free readings on Saturday. This store is a Jewel and so grateful it is close by where we live. read more

Nice selection of books, including manga and magazines. Everything for the intellectual, including toys, puzzles and games. The cafeteria is nice if you want to sit down and have a bite to eat or just relax with a book. Bathrooms are pretty clean, and they have an area for kids to read children's books. As one of them it's a joy to see a review in their system on my debut political spy thriller novel "Circle Around The Sun" as 'Better than Bond or Jason Bourne' , My books (The ISIS Project Series - latest "Midnight in Moscow" M. D. Johnson) are eBooks as well and they are widely available, There are many. many talented writers here if we could have a special day featuring our works it would raise awareness and be great for the community. Border's did this regularly and their staff were wonderful. While large bookstores are sadly becoming a thing of the past a successful business enhances the community it's in - selling the product isn't enough - knowing your customers and product is! I have always loved Barns n Noble. It's a cheap date for the wife and me. The staff is helpful, the store is clean, and the cafe is pretty good. Comfy chairs and a smaller nook section would be nice. I felt like they we're trying to be the nook/apple store for a while... But hey, there's a reason we still have Barns n Noble but not Boarders. So I take my criticism back. Came here a few days ago to purchase a book... When reading it realized that the book cover had been sliced close to the spine and would easily fall apart if I kept reading it like that. Went back to exchange it. There was some confusion at the cash register and the cashier Returned the book on my credit card even though I just wanted to exchange for the same book. Having a Canadian credit card I would have to pay fees each time a transaction went through I wasn't eager to purchase back the same book again. The manager was called and was very understanding of the situation. Neither of us really knew what to do, however the manager took control of the situation and offered the book for free; I will still have to pay the conversion and the transaction fees on my credit card. I don't know that was the best outcome as I wasn't trying to get the book for free. I was impressed at how the manager handled the situation and was very gracious. read more

I love printed books and don't like e-readers...but if I want a new book I'll order it off of Amazon from the comfort of my haystack hair and boxers, not go to a store. I recently returned 3 books and received an email that Barnes and Noble is trying to charge me for one of the books. I made my first phone call to customer service and the person was no help, he claimed he was going to transfer me to a management team and lied and just disconnected my call. I called again and spoke to a lady who said she was going to transfer my call to a management team, I waited on the phone for 10 minutes and the call just went blank. I made a third call and the lady told me that the reason Barnes and Noble is trying to charge me for a book is because that the book was returned in bad condition. I then asked to speak to a manager because that was absolutely false. She transferred me to a management team member who name is "Sean" he refused to give me his last name. I told him that i returned the book how I received it, the book had a few highlighted pages and a little worn (which is expexted for a USED BOOK). I did not consider it in bad condition because if I did I would have sent it back as soon as I received it in the mail. I am not going to be charged for a book I sent back in the same condition I received it. If the book was in such bad condition then why did Barnes and Noble send it out that way. His customer service was awful, Sean started off very nice at first, but then he became very rude. I feel this is unacceptable because someone wasn't doing their job when they sent out the book, because if so you all would have never sent out a book that is considered "bad condition". read more
