The only time I see B&N bustling is around the holiday season. 'They' say that people don't read books anymore. I don't think it's entirely true; however, I suppose some readers might agree that B&N has gone out of style over the years. For instance, in the Edison location B&N still features a huge area entirely devoted to DVDs and CDs - forms of media which increasingly become irrelevant to consumers with each passing year. The advent of technological development has overtaken the usefulness of paper books. Even the professors from my graduate school program studies (circa 2020-2022) elected to use digital textbooks for 85% of the curriculum coursework. Perhaps brick and mortar B&N stores ought to inject a new retail experience into their business model that involves the offline-to-online and online-to-offline offerings (i.e. digital kiosks in stores) read more

Great location for a Barnes and nobles. Connected right to Menlo Mall and multiple restaurants. This complex is lively and lots to do. Really enjoy the Starbucks inside and the plentiful seating as well. Wish there more outlets located close by however. read more

All the Barnes and Noble book stores are laid out approximately in the same manner. The majority of the people that frequent this establishment probably have a lot of time to kill and sit at a coffee shop to read the magazines from the shelves, that are in close range. Of course there's an in-store Starbucks. The seating upstairs is nice overlooking thearea. This is the first Barnes and Noble's store I've seen with two floors. I don't care if this review gets flagged. It must be said. The bathroom is always trashed, even before the pandemic. Not all stalls lock either. When I went there the other day, there was dried blood and pee on the floor, paper towels and toilet paper everywhere. It just seems like the pandemic never happened in their minds and all covid safety precautions have gone out the window. You would think they would at least try to clean more than 1x a day with all the people traffic, but they don't. They don't even have a paper towel dispenser. There is a large soggy roll on the counter for everyone to touch. Don't go here if you are trying to stay safe. They also have the escalator off, which is bad if you have any physical difficulty going up stairs. No limits to the elevator or mask requirements. I'd rather shop online. read more

Stopped in here to look for a book they didn't have. This bookstore is clean amd seemingly well organized. My only qualm was having to wait on line to have staff search inventory versus being able to do it at a kiosk like at some other locations - but I also realize this is good for employee retention. read more

Mostly tolerable when parents don't bring their tantrum-prone children and when teenagers aren't loitering in their little giggle cliques. Generally speaking, businesses attached to malls get all kinds of riffraff, but the store associates will kindly remind certain Edison customers not to prop their bare feet up on the windowsills while reading. At least once a year, the escalators randomly change directions, and on occasion stop working altogether. As of late, the layout of the second floor has been prone to shifting, perhaps to accommodate the growing selection of children's toys. The in-store Starbucks cafe is likely the only reason this location is still in business, but it's operated by Barnes & Noble rather than by Starbucks, so don't expect to be able to use Starbucks gift cards or earn/redeem Starbucks Rewards™ here. And unlike standalone Starbucks, the tables are uncomfortably small and flimsy. Still, if you are endeared by the endangered establishment of the brick-and-mortar bookstore, buying a cup of joe may be the simplest way to keep this B&N from going under. read more

On November 12 we ordered a book to be delivered to our granddaughter for her birthday. A week later we got a call that the book was in the store. We were surprised and went to the store, but they had no information about it being paid for and requested delivery. They wanted us to pay for a new order. We came home and found the receipt and will return to the store. We are very unhappy since the girl did not get the book for her birthday and the poor service that a gentleman called steven gave to us. We will buy books from Amazon and not from Barnes and Noble in the future. We have used Barnes for years and we are members. Now we understand why they are on the way to bankruptcy. read more

Recently stopped by here to get a quick coffee at Starbucks and a few books, and for some reason it turned into an event. The cash registers at the Starbucks didn't work (which I figured out on my own after the very short line stopped moving for 10 minutes, it was not announced) and when I finally got my coffee, I was told to follow a particular cashier to another register at the front where I could pay for it. The next 3 registers that he tried did not work, so instead of allowing myself and the two other patrons to go (we had already waited at least 20 minutes, and the loss would have been less than $15 for the store) they had us standing there waiting as they tried different registers. I understand technology is not 100% reliable and systems go down, but they handled the situation by putting the store first and not the customer and it was pretty obvious. When I finally was able to get online with the books I came to get, I got to a register, put my books down, and another patron interrupted my transaction asking about several book titles from the cashier. Instead of directing the person to the customer service desk, (since i was already in front of him with my credit card out!!) he proceeded to look up each book the patron asked for and I waited another 5 minutes as that went on. I used to work at Barnes and Noble myself when I was in high school and the customer service attitude was never this poor because we would have heard about it from the manager immediately. Seems like there is a management issue at this store and I will probably not be returning. read more

You can find pretty much every book. The only downfall is the parking, unless you are willing to walk then you are ok ( bad idea in cold weather). Sometimes we forget how enjoyable it is to hold a physical book, turn its pages and read. Recently, I spent a whole day reading at this location. Two whole levels of reading pleasure. I bought a book, a coffee at the Starbucks, sat in the lounge for a while - sipping on my coffee, reading and people watching. It was GREAT. The upper level has lots of chairs facing the parking lot (lol). And it's perfect to just cozy up with a book here. I was surprised at how crowded this section was. People still read books, yayy! Overall, I liked this location of B&N. Prices are comparable to ebooks + they have great specials on some older books. They even have beautifully painted, special editions of some classics - I bought One Hundred Years of Solitude & it was so gorgeous, I just kept staring at it for a while. I know this book will find a proud place on my bookshelf. There was only one cashier at the counter, so service was a bit slow, but when you have the whole day to spare, who cares, right? :) read more

When you do find help, they are helping someone else and quickly scurry off so that no one can ask them. So im waiting on line right now, and there are about 5 people ahead of me and 4 people behind me and 1 register open... and no other help to be found. Poor guy. Oh well. My last time buying books here.. I'm going online and ordering it and picking it up at customer service. Wow, a massive two story brick and morter book store!! Crazy! It's like finding a dinosaur in the middle of NJ. I'd already spent my personal allotment of time in the mall- I mean how much time should anyone spend it these megolithic monstronsities of expenditure- so I almost didn't walk into B&N. Glad I did. I picked up a few books and magazines that I didn't need, taken in by the simple pleasure of holding the actual item itself in my hand to flip the pages while perusing the labyrinthine stacks and stepping over various readers squirreled away in pockets of the store. read more

A nice, 2-story store that has a nice assortment of books, magazines, "hobby"-related items, and more. Whenever I go to Menlo Park Mall, I always stop here to see what's available, and what's on sale. The sales people are friendly. They also have a cafe that sells Starbucks items and provides free WIFI to customers and visitors. It would be nice if they add more sales to a lot of their books, as most of them are sold at regular retail. Still, it's always worth coming back to look around! read more

Great place for killing time. The upper level has lots of chairs so you can sit back, relax and grab a book to read. The shelves are usually clean and organized but I have noticed sometimes on busy weekends, by the end of the day the popular sections tend to become unruly. The lower level has a Starbucks with lots of seating right next to the magazine racks which I think is just perfect. I usually get myself a frapp, grab a table by the window and switch between perusing a copy of Vogue and people watching. This place is great for study groups too. But grab a seat early in the day because they fill up fast. A lovely feature I just discovered recently is their reservation option. I recently needed to buy a street map for Montreal (yes maps are still sold even though this is the age of GPS). You can go to their site and reserve a book for pick up at your local Barnes and Nobles, they'll send you a text/email when it's ready and you have up to 3 days to pick it up. Love it! I'm pretty lazy and this feature is great for me cause I can just dash in and dash out because someone has done the work of looking for the item for me. Highly recommend this branch, it's big, with a wide selection of books available. read more

Big and spacious! With two levels, I enjoyed browsing on the second floor, where there are tables and chairs spread throughout. The cafe area is sizeable and comfortable, but it usually crowded, every table occupied. So I don't even bother lingering or trying to find a space. I meander around on foot or grab some magazines and sit somewhere upstairs on the floor. The seats and tables up there are also occupied. Maybe I come during bad times, like the weekends or during Finals season. I imagine it would be a lot better during the weekday/early afternoons, and with Wifi and Starbucks, you can waste a lot of time here. And then grab a takeout meal from Cheesecake Factory right next door. I don't usually buy any of their books or other items though because it's pricey and honestly I can find better. However, when things are on sale, sometimes you can find a gem on fiction novels, cooking and baking books, as well as stuffed animals and toys (especially around the holidays). Parking can be tough because it's attached to the mall. So might not find a close space. Be prepared to walk a bit. read more

I came here many years ago, but I rarely go to bookstores, so I thought that I would review this place now. The store is clean, first of all, but the staff are complete idiots. I went here two times. The first time, I wanted to get a book, and I ask the clerk if they have it. The clerk says yes, and the book is upstairs. I go upstairs, and I don't see the book in the section the clerk tells me. So, I ask the clerk at the top floor, and she said they didn't have the book that I wanted Wtf? The second time, I came here, same reason, I wanted a book that I've heard was good. I could not find it. The clerk says the book is sold out. Than I see, she has one of those book strollers, and I see the book. The clerk says,"Whoops, didn't think it would be there." Never coming here again. East Brunswick, B and N, they are so more knowledgable. read more

Wow - I never thought I would be writing a positive review about a Chain Store... I had to call the Edison, NJ Barnes and Noble store in the Menlo Park Mall with questions about the Nook HD+ and I was treated with warm and friendly customer service. I would have thought it was 20 plus years ago if I wasn't using a cell phone at the time. When I arrived, I dealt with not one but two people in the store who raised the bar for my expectations of retail customer service. Helpful, Knowledgeable and Friendly; you know all the marketing buzz words every company tries to make you believe you are going to experience if you visit their store. Well surprise it actually exists. And of all places a retail giant, attached to a mall, where they sell expensive coffee and items one could probably find online for buck or two less. In an age where retail customer service is usually a 'kid' who doesn't know the answer to your question and often doesn't care enough to find out, it was a nice surprise to find people who actually care. Lacked climate control. Not enough seats. I appreciate the fact that there are two entrances, one front and one back. However, this makes it so that more heat escapes and therefore the room temperature fluctuates at times, making it feel colder at inappropriate times. Not enough seats. You will be waiting a fairly long time for a table and seat. Sometimes there are interviews going on so that may be annoying. I understand that this may come out as unfair since they're different management but the starbucks service was relatively slow. Also, this place sometimes has teenagers coming in (Age 14-17) who can sometimes be annoying and rude (loud) to other guests. Book selection is great but there needs to be a bigger area for tables and seats. The upstairs needs more chairs. Edited for clarity. read more

Floors were dirty as well. When you ask for discounts the managers will lie and tell you different stories just to get you out of the store. Avoid this store or order books online. read more

Books, magazines, board games, and even a Star Bucks this bookstore has it all. It stands as a two store monolith of knowledge in the front of Menlo Park Mall. Forget about parking in front, because they have to compete with the Cheese Cake Factory. Park in the back of the Mall and walk though. Have been coming to this Barnes & Noble since high school, back when the music/DVD section primarily sold music. It's in a great location in front of Menlo Park Mall, across from Target. A big plus with this particular location is that if you want to grab a book and sit down, there's almost always seating upstairs by the windows. Even if it appears to be packed, linger around for a little bit and a seat is bound to clear up. They have a wide selection of everything from manga to self-help; I've never not been able to find a book I'm looking for. However, they play a weirdly limited selection of music: it'll go from the same few albums on endless rotation during holiday season to Lady Gaga singles to nothing. read more

It's so big and nice. I found what I needed in no time. They have wifi & a Starbucks. They have a variety of genres and books!

Always come here to grab a coffee and get some work done for school. It's usually quiet and the staff is usually really nice. I like to grab a seat by the window and do work there. I usually never leave complaints on reviews. However, I feel that if the staff is going to be so adamant about not moving chairs out of the "seating area" upstairs or students sitting on the floors, they SHOULD have a table in the space for people to do work since many college students do come here for that purpose. There are currently no plugs for charging your laptop in the Starbucks seating space, they are only located UPSTAIRS where the supposed reading area is located and even so, they are across the area nowhere near it. If you're going to force people to sit downstairs then you should at least have some working charging stations or provide one or two small tables UPSTAIRS to be able to charge your phone or laptop whilst you're doing work and waiting to move elsewhere. This was never an issue before I understand that was some sort of run in with the fire Marshall which is understandable, but at least try to accommodate your guests if you're going to change the rules and be rude to people when they're confused as to why all of a sudden this is a huge issue. Also annoyed at the fact that when I asked an employee where I should move to because there ARE NO plugs downstairs, she stated "well there's a seating area downstairs WITH tables." Thanks, for being not helpful at all and incredibly condescending. read more

I love this Barnes & Nobles. The staff is friendly and helpful. Even though most chairs are taking in the downstairs room, you can always take the escalators up and grab a seat that is facing the outside (not much of a view) but it's quiet, which is what most readers ask for. read more

Very helpful staff in finding and ordering books or products. Cashiers are usually friendly and cheerful. Free WiFi and they have chairs with tables in the cafe or upstairs for you to sit. Not a bad place to go. Lots of foot traffic but because of the space you would really know. The only complaint I have is the seating for the cafe. There just isn't enough places to sit and enjoy your coffee and you new book or magazine. I saw some people sitting on the floor reading and drinking. That is just wrong and poor planning. Tonight was my second visit as of late. Last was during the afternoon about a month ago. I'm writing this review because on both occasions I used the restroom. I should clarify tried to use it. The bathrooms are never clean and are fill of trash on the floor. I understand things can happen but seriously maintain your establishment to a higher standard.
