This is a large, clean and well organized bookstore. It was easy to find the different departments throughout the store. They had a little cafe where many people got together to chat and visit. Plenty of parking. Bathroom was gross tho. Amazon pricing can be competitive as well but I like being able to walk in and flip thru the books before I decide to buy. Can be hard to track down staff if they are helping others. Love the kids area, good place to take the kiddos for some interactive fun. read more

The store is very organized and you can spend hours here looking at everything. I reserved an item online for pick up at the store. There was an option to pay now online or pay later in store. Within 10 minutes of submitting the order, I received an email that the item I reserved online is now ready for pick up in store and I had 3 days to pick it up. If it is not picked up by this date, then it will be returned to the shelf for other customers to purchase. The next day, I headed to the store. I went to the check out counter and told the staff member that I had reserved an item online for pick up. She asked me for my name and located the item on the shelf behind the counter. After purchasing the item, she also handed me a coupon for $1 off any Starbucks handcrafted beverage grande or larger at the Barnes & Noble Café during the month of October. The Barnes & Noble Café is located on the right of the entrance of the store. The staff member who took my order was friendly and accepted the coupon. I have been here a few times - and the staff is always pleasant and helpful. I get super annoyed because there are always display tables so I could do my best to find a book I'm looking for on the shelf without having to interact with any people - which is ideal for my anxious self - but often the books I'm looking for are on an end cap of themed table display. TBH I literally hate that. I'm sure it's good for marketing but wish there'd be the book on the shelf where it belongs alphabetically by author too. But - the staff knows where these books could be on these display tables, so when I finally realize I can't find something on my own without check it literally every table or end cap - I will finally ask for help. And usually it's not as awful interacting as I expected. Also - today, the girls working the cafe were super sweet. Talked about books, about not finishing books, about books we have read or want to read. Yes, I said I'm anxious and don't always like interacting, but sometimes I do. And these two baristas were so friendly and kind. One had short pink hair, the other was a brunette. I didn't get names. Also my coffee was solid. read more

I've always been a fan of bookstores and this store has something for everyone. They have the cutest children's area in the far back- which has a stage and they do occasionally have story time- although it's not advertised much. I feel as though this area is thoroughly under used! This has so much potential for character story time or like creating little events around returning back to school or anything to that effect. I've never seen anything going on back here and I've only read about the "mythical" story time. This isn't just a bookstore- as they have a full service Starbucks located directly inside with a little cafe area so you can eat and read or eat and not read. They also have couches in though out the store so you can read comfortably! They have the largest selection of magazines I've ever seen- carrying rare and elusive periodicals. They always have a great selection of gifts as well as toys! The toy selection is amazing and even better then you'd expect. They have a huge selection of games (Kerplunk, Monopoly, Chutes & Ladders (etc). read more

Ahh - the age of real books is coming to an end soon - I'm sad but it's a reality. BN has a great online presence. I appreciate their forward movement thinking. This is why they've outlasted Borders. BN captured the online market even before there was an online market. They basically created the appetite for ebooks - when most detested the idea (i.e. me). I was the one who said I like to feel the pages in my hand. Their real book prices are decent, if you get their BN rewards card - you get free shipping and discounted prices. I come here to study, for coffee, their goodies, they have Cheesecake Factory cheesecake and their kids section. It's rarely crowded so its perfect for quiet time. read more

I LOVE Barnes & Noble. My organization has been buying books from them for nearly 23 years. Unfortunately, this post concerning today's visit has nothing to do with Barnes & Noble's professionalism, but that of a manager who clearly doesn't follow company rules or guidelines, and certainly doesn't follow customer service protocol. I bought $90 worth of books for my organization, blackberryradio.org and gave my Vice President's card information. I also asked (as President of the organization) to change our membership name to our business name. The woman in customer [no] service yells, "SIR, YOU CAN'T JUST WALK IN HERE AND CHANGE THE NAME ON SOMEONE'S ACCOUNT." I explained that I was ADDING our company name, and that my VP was on the phone. The woman became extremely irate and further yelled, "AGAIN, YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE NAME ON THE ACCOUNT. TELL HER SHE WILL HAVE TO PHYSICALLY WALK INTO A BARNES & NOBEL AND PRESENT HER DRIVER'S LICENSE." I asked the woman to please show me the policy where it states we would have to come in with a driver's license, and that we couldn't change our account to a business name. She said there wasn't such policy, and that's "just common sense." I informed her that if the policy isn't in writing, then there IS no such policy. She was basically following her own mean-spirited rules, and angrily making up policies. At this point, I asked to speak with a manager. The woman then yelled, "I AM the manager!" I have never seen a manager of such an establishment act that way, with customers walking around. I was very embarrassed. I had to go to the front counter and pay an EXTRA $25 for ANOTHER account, so our business name would show on the account. However, my VP automatically cancelled her 7-year-old account by calling B&N customer service. My VP apologized to me as if SHE were the mean person. The manager's name is CAITLIN. The most unprofessional manager I've come across in a long time. Covid-19 is friendlier than her. Thank God I had a witness on the phone with me listening to the whole ordeal. Yes, I will continue to shop Barnes and Noble both online and in-store. However, I will make it a point never to engage with Caitlin, as her attitude and unchecked anger is not one that I could deal with. The 1-star-rating is SPECIFICALLY for Caitlin. Barnes & Nobles still gets 5-stars from us. read more

customer service staff/ manager (Joseph) takes advantage of the virus pandemic to be unprofessional. as he is almost alone in the store he speaks loudly with the cashier personnel and ruins customer shopping experience. I polity asked Joseph if he could speak less loud and he surprised me with his reply: "no! not possible! and he added: "customers are not suppose to be reading anyways". I was speechless! I have been to the branch in Michigan and MA never had a problem and that was before the virus crisis when it was much busier. so now that the store is not that busy i don't get this attitude and i thought it is reasonable to expect a book store to be QUITE. I also understand that customers need to buy what they need to buy and leave within 10 mints. However this does not mean staff have the right to be rude, loud, and have personal conversations while customers are trying to make decisions on purchases. Joseph was talking with the cashier staff while both arranging books as they move about . so for more than 10 mints i could hear from his end to her end and it was mostly personal conversations .i first tried to change place, then waited for them to hopefully stop, and when i got tired i went to ask Joseph and all i got is rudeness. if Barnes & Noble can only place 1 RUDE store manager during this crisis, they might as well close. no need to take customers money when they can't provide the same professional service they used to provide. read more

Since I've gone all "techie," I usually download all my books on my nook. Making my visits here less frequent. However, I still find any excuse to come here. Justifying that I need ANOTHER planner or that I "need" to have a hard-copy of a new-found favorite that I JUST read on the nook. Yes, I do realize it is illogical and unconventional. Despite the convenience and lower prices of e-books, I find that there is just something wonderful and exciting in opening up the fresh pages of your newly owned book. This store lures me in with it's helpful staff, organized shelves, cleanliness, classy journals/planners, wide selections of reading material (from magazines, self-help books, children's books, and my favorite: fiction books), stationary, cards, calendars, DVD's/CD's-- plenty of items that satisfy the eyes. When I walk in here I easily spend an hour or so in here. There is even a Starbucks cafe in the store for you to enjoy your mid-day coffee and books. The comfy couches sprawled all around the store allows you to relax and sample a book before buying it. Making it all the more tempting to spend most of your day in this bookstore haven. read more

I go here mainly for the Starbucks. Yes, there is a standalone Starbucks up the street but this one has more treats to offer. I can find me a good book, or bring my own, then head over here and have a seat in their cafe with a nice frappuccino and my new favorite, the asiago cheese stuffed pretzel. I am not a pretzel lover but when I saw this on the display I was curious. The staff highly recommended it and I'm glad I gave it a try. They don't go to crazy with the cheese but just enough, they then sprinkle some seasoning on the top of the pretzel to make this a wonderful snack. Go and try one, you can thank me later. read more

Where have all the books gone. I guess this tells you how long it has been since I actually read a book outside of my hand me downs and second hand selections. I love that the store incorporates the new generations and has come so far electronically. I also love that the children's section is endless. They get it. Kids want the tactile experience, give them a tablet great, put them in a sea of books and we're golden. I also love that they practically eliminated the kitschy office supply section that they once had. There are only so many cheesy bookmarks and notebooks to be had. The coffee shop has also lessened their presence, although the aroma is still strong. Don't mind that at all. Staff was as I remember them, scarce and avoiding us by all means. Then there was the Kids section attendant that was huffing, puffing and blowing the place down. She was ready for bed. read more

I should probably seek out a less "commercial" bookstore to spend my time in, but quite honestly, and sadly, this is the only bookstore within a few mile radius of my house which doesn't involve getting stuck in traffic trying to cross to the other side of the city and/or struggling to find a decent parking spot. I've been visiting this particular Barnes & Noble for years now. I've never had a bad experience there, but then again, I don't often deal with the sales/service people. I usually just stop in with a currently owned book, grab one of those big, comfy armchairs, sit back, relax and read away for an hour or so. Although, the times I have dealt with the staff, it's been fine. The last experience I had was with an eager-beaver cashier who wanted to share his entire life story with me, which I normally find annoying and overbearing, but this kid was cute and lonely, so I didn't mind him bending my ear for a minute. This place is always organized, however; when I do try and find a book I'm looking for, I only have good luck about 50% of the time. They offer to order it for me, but then I just have to wait to get it and if I'm going to order a book online, I may as well just go to half.com and spend "half" the money doing so. Get it? Get it? "Half?" Anyway. Keep up the good work, Barnes & Noble and please don't go out of business like your other buddy, Borders did. read more

I like the over sized comfy chairs placed here and there for the browser that wants to read the first chapter before making a decision. The information desk perfectly placed in the middle of the store is staffed by knowledgeable, friendly book lovers. If they don't know it they always look it up for me. Fantastic location, great selection and overall a fine Barnes & Noble store. While I rarely go to physical bookstores anymore (I'm so sorry! I buy almost exclusively used from Amazon), I do stop in every so often for periodicals or (gasp) comic books. The staff is usually friendly, helpful and the wait time in line, minimal. My only real gripe is the cafe: sadly their iced coffee is almost always watered down. When I feel the need for Starbucks I'd rather hop to the Target next door. This is probably one of the cleaner, more customer-service oriented Barnes and Noble in the area. While non-chain options are great, Barnes and Noble provides a really large selection of reference books (think SAT, GRE, etc.) and a massive children's section. They also have quite a large selection of magazines that are ordinarily slightly more difficult to find. However, I came here recently early one morning and was thrilled to find a Starbucks (my favorite caffeinated chain) and promptly ordered a large coffee (I was tired, okay?). When I went to use my Starbucks card, I was informed that they were not accepted inside Barnes and Noble. But I could use a Barnes and Noble gift card! Um...what? I have to pay for my soy milk? I've been known to get lost in bookstores, and I think I spent well over an hour browsing in this Barnes and Noble. It was fully-stocked, clean, and organized. A great shopping experience. The staff is not only friendly but helpful. When I asked the staff member in the children's book section where I could find books by Robert Munsch, she immediately told me off the top of her head which books by this author the store carried and where I could find them. She also informed me of the new children's book promotion. Taylor, who was working the Nook/customer service counter, was super helpful. He was not pushy and let me come to the realization on my own that I was about to buy a Nook, but he provided lots of information about promotions, service plans, and the differences between the Nook versions. The store itself was not very busy, but the Smithfield Crossing parking lot is a mad house on a Sunday afternoon. Beware. read more

This is a good Barnes and Noble always organized and easy to find things. The coffee shop is very nice, with a great selection and nice staff. The staff for the bookstore portion is a different story. I always feel I am pissing them off when I ask a question. They tried to get us to sign up for the book club, but there is a $25 annual fee. So you get 10% off every time you check out, yet you have to pay $25 a year. I did quick math and told my girlfriend she would have to buy about 15 books in order to make it worth while. The women seemed a little mad at me that I would question it. This was not my first time, but most recent I can talk about. Another time was the information desk looking for a specific book. If you know what your looking for, its an easy store to find stuff though. read more

I ordered a blu-ray Criterion direct from Smithfield store. What I received was in a DVD sized case, not the smaller sized blu-ray case. Criterion is a collectible. I have no way of knowing if the original case or blu-ray itself was damaged or if I didn't receive a legit copy. Returned at the store no problem. We then purchased items in store and the man at the register asked me to flip the items so he could scan the barcodes. Ok. He scans without touching anything and drops the receipt on top of the items and that's it. How is he doing his job? I'm sure he has to stock items etc and has to touch things in the store. Sorry but that was rude to ask the customer to do. We're all in the same boat. Wear gloves and sanitize like the rest of us. I wouldn't have been in the store if we had not received a screwed up copy to begin with. read more

My young daughter with a medical condition was discriminated against in this store by 2 employees, one of which was a manager named Joseph. We walked into an empty store to quickly buy two items from the cafe and take them to go. My daughter, who cannot wear a face covering due to medical reasons, was asked if she needed a mask, to which I replied that she cannot wear one because she is medically exempt. Both employees told me that my child had to wait outside alone in order for them to serve me. I told them that they cannot deny service due to medical conditions, as stated in the Rhode Island Executive Order. The manager Joseph then old me that yes, he can deny me service because B&N is a private owned company...which obviously it is not. So I left the store and contacted the RI Dept of Business Regulations, and also B&N corporate management to let them know that Joseph illegally asked me to leave the store and denied me service. I will never again give Barnes & Noble business because of their rude, discriminatory act towards my child. read more

Idk if this is weird but today i was essentially kicked out of my favorite store in the world, The Barnes and Noble in Smithfield RI. I was there doing homework in their cafe area. I bought a coffee and a Fiji water and picked out a book to purchase on my way out. I needed to be next to an outlet to complete my final project for a masters class that I am in, and my outlet happens to be next to one of those couches that they have. So i guess you could say it looked like i was taking two seats. I was there for a total of about 5 hours. A manager comes up to me and says "I need this table you have been here all day it is getting busy" I look around and I see no one in line and other empty seats. He said it in a very rude way and didnt leave room for me to me to move to a different seat essentialy he was kicking me out. Now I have been at starbucks for much longer doing homework and never been told that there was a time limit to being a paying customer. All of the people around me were looking at me awkwardly as if i was either stealing something or loitering. It made me really uncomfortable I was literally in shock and didn't know what to say. I used to go to Barnes and Noble for the personal connection of being in a bookstore but after this episode it is strictly Amazon for me. The staff has always been friendly and helpful at this location. Likewise, the store is clean and well organized. Parking is no problem too. I wish prices could be more competitive on the DVS and CDs (Yes, I still buy them.) Still, unlike the Warwick and Blackstone Shops this location still has an extensive Movie and Music department which earns you an extra star! I saw fewer DVD titles and more shelve space on my last visit. Hopefully this store is not phasing out the video and music department too. read more
