In some ways, I'm kind of like a guy... I sometimes don't like to ask for directions. Luckily, I was shopping with Jules. She went right up to Customer Service of Barnes & Noble and asked for help in finding the book that I wanted: "Molly's Game". I had seen the movie and was totally impressed with this true story. Why did I go to this book store? Because Craig gave me a cute Hello Kitty gift card! The first thing I told him, after I thanked him, was that I didn't know if we have a Barnes & Noble in Hawaii. I looked it up on my Yelp app and saw that there was a location at Ala Moana...yay! Free parking...haha! Anyway, Jules knows Ala Moana Shopping Center way better than I do. She knew exactly which way to go and where to park. If I were by myself, I'd be using my GPS. She pointed at some stairs which led to the store... wow... it's massive! Inside, there was a cafe which served Starbucks coffee and goodies. To the left of the entrance, past the cashiers, there was a Gift section. Going clockwise, I saw a Children's department, greeting cards, toys and games, calendars, Hawaiiana area, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, Best sellers, clearance items, cook books, magazines, and more! Gosh... I could spend an entire day here! The gal at Customer Service was awesome! She seemed genuinely interested in the book I wanted, found my book, and even brought it to me! The guy at the cash register wasn't too shabby either! He explained the benefits of joining their Loyalty Program and other services such as shipping. Both employees were knowledgeable, patient, and courteous! I was even more pleased that I could use a 15 percent off coupon that was in my Entertainment Book! With the Craig's generous gift card plus my coupon, I had a small balance which I received in cash. I even got to keep the cute Hello Kitty gift card as a souvenir! For sure, I'll be back! read more

Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana is the only surviving Barnes and Noble on the island. I'm saddened that the one in Kahala Mall closed. Bookstores are slowly fading away because of ebooks and online resources. To me, you still can't compare an ebook to a read actual book. Anyway I get emails from Barnes and Nobles telling me about the events that they have at their store. Last weekend I was looking for something to do with my daughter and I thought their storytime would be perfect for her. They were reading a book about Chinese New Year and then they were going to make a lantern and have other Chinese New Year activities. The setup for the reading center is in a cozy area in the children's section. I just wasn't impressed with this whole activity. The reader sits on a chair and the kids sit on benches in a semicircle about 3-4 feet away from the reader. So there's a big space between the kids and the reader. So much so that while the reader was reading a kid was walking back and forth in the space. People were talking and the kid was walking back and forth so there was no way that my daughter could even hear what was going on in the book. There were just too many distractions. They need to change the configuration of the reading center. Bring the kids closer to the book so they can see the pictures and hear what the reader is saying. At the end of the story, they had the kids pop Pop-Pops by stepping on it. My daughter wasn't into it. She just got scared. They also had lantern-making which kind of disappointed me. I thought they were going to be making and cutting and gluing the lantern together but it was pretty much a paper to color and poke a hole in the top. This Barnes and Noble location needs some work. I went to the one in California over Christmas break and it's so much nicer, bigger, and more inviting. read more

This review is for the cafe in Barnes & Noble. Okay I used to complain all of the time about my retail job, but neverrrr in front of customers . Literally heard complaining the whole time from when I arrived to when I left. Marieatta and a guy was working behind the counter at this time. The guy was openly complaining about customers and mocking them. I understand how overworked and underpaid people in retail are but I still keep my composure. There's nothing wrong with standing up for yourself when customers disrespect you but this wasn't like that. He literally was so loud with it . read more

This store has a great selection of books, but there's not enough seating to read them. The staff doesn't let you sit on the ground to read either. I feel like this is bad business practice, especially for people who like to read before making their purchases. I definitely will be making my purchases from Amazon from now on. read more

For all you book worms, can we all agree that we're thankful for Barnes & Noble. This is the only large and major book store on the island. There are tons of educational and novel books to read, tons of board games, and tons of knick knacks and thingamajigs [calendars, planners, electronic book devices, and more]. There is even a Starbucks right inside. If you sign up and become a member, you only pay less than $30 a year. After that, every purchase you make, you get a discounted. Just because you are a member. Even your coffee drinks at Starbucks are marked off regular price. The only con about this place is that there aren't any power outlets around. So you either have to come here anticipating to read a book, or charge all your electronic devices in advance. read more

I haven't been here in so long! My son and I used to come here every weekend, I'm so happy to see that it is still here. I came here for a specific reason, my friend had asked me if I could send her the latest issue of Honolulu Magazine. I checked a couple of places and they didn't have any, so I thought immediately "B and N" will have it. Off I went to my favorite bookstore. Oh no, for the first time in my life, I didn't see it in its usual spot, so I went to customer service and asked if they had it. Customer service is very good here and they actually walked to the spot where it should be. Oh well, I texted my friend to tell her my mission had failed. On the bright side, I stopped at their little Starbucks Cafe and had a refreshing iced green tea, so it was still a nice afternoon. I'll be back to relax and pick up a nice book or two when I have more time. read more

Barnes & Noble is the best bookstore in town. I can't think of any other bookstore around that can compete in terms of selection and variety of books and games. It is located on the bottom floor of Ala Moana Mall. There is a Starbucks Cafe inside the store that is often quite crowded and can be a challenge to find an empty seat. However, there are a few chairs available throughout the store. Books of every genre can be found here along with a kids section that includes books, board games, and toys. There is a tabletop gaming gathering at 7:00pm on the last Thursday of every month in the toys section of the bookstore. read more

After waiting the mandatory 15 minutes after the shot, we are heading to Ala Moana Shopping Center, laser focused on "Barnes and Noble Bookstore" Please note: I have been sheltering in place since my last day of work, which was March 20,2020 and highlights of my days have been sprucing up my yard which I landscaped almost 15 years ago Pre-Covid I had to always carve out a little time for my yard, during Covid I could actually sit n watch the weeds grow(no joke here!), quick trips to the market n some trips for other essentials. A trip to Ala Moana is huge, so our Covid numbers are down, so this is a BOLD step....we park...and pass so many interesting stores...eating places...coffee shops...I did not realize how much I missed this place!!....one level up..no wrong...back down one level...and TA DAAAAA... there it is...I'm in bookie heaven....Barnes n Noble here we come! As everyone knows, magazines, books, games, etc etc etc...after almost an hour of checking (Everything) it out...I finally made my selections! Waited in a very short line.. and a cashier pleasantly rung up my purchases! Coulda stayed longer, but will certainly make it a point to go back soon! *5 Covid protocols: all employees/customers wearing masks, sanitizers are available at the entrance of the store/ safe distancing markers on the floor at check out area 5* Store appearance: store was very organized and neat/loved their sale area( located near checkout area) 5* Customer service: although I didn't need anyone's help, noticed some of their workers continued to help others who requested information etc/cashier was very cordial n friendly, did ask me to join their club for later discounts Overall this was a very nice shopping experience, I generally am crazy happy to b in a "Bookstore" N Barnes and Noble is one of the best...looking back...I have such fun/fond memories at Borders at Waikele (boohoohoo, I was so sad, I even took a picture of their sign before they left). I'm a big fan of this Barnes and Noble because they're not just a bookstore anymore. Not to sound old but, I remember when bookstores were just bookstores that included a few DVDs, VHS, CDs and cassettes. I'm even sure there was a time where it was just books ... but that was before my time This Barnes & Noble has a wide variety of things, to include a Starbucks inside. Their board games department has expanded exponentially from what it once was to include rows of games for all age groups. Settlers of Cataan, Exploding Kittens, Chess, Checkers and tons more. My wife and I usually look at the games and then google to see what's good. Since having our first kid, we've gone more to the kids section, which is massive. It could be a bookstore in and of itself. Their staff has always been friendly and helpful. The store is big, so I'd block out at least 30-45 minutes to take a look around. read more

I recently went to Barnes and Noble for the first time in a long time. At the information desk they were really helpful and after realizing my book was not offered in the store, the gentleman said he could order it for me. I declined the offer but I thought it was really nice to know that they offer that service!! There was a bunch of sales going on and I also decided to check out the clearance table on the Starbucks side. The girl working was beyond helpful and so sweet!! The seating area has been eliminated but that's to be expected. The one star off is for the closed bathrooms. I wanted to browse some more but the nearest bathroom was the food court across from Macy's and I just never made it back to Barnes and Noble! It's kinda inconvenient but all in all still a great store! They are also still honoring kids club coupons for the time being! read more

They also have a Starbucks located inside and they sell cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory. They have a nice little seating area to enjoy your drinks. Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana is the last big retail bookstore in Hawaii. I really hope this store stays open forever. Gone are Waldenbooks, Borders, and other Barnes and Nobles. I used to frequent Waldenbooks quite often as a kid at Kahala Mall, then Barnes and Noble opened up upstairs and I went there all the time! Now as an adult I still enjoy going to this Barnes and Noble, though I almost never purchase any books because I usually borrow them at the public library, and I usually immediately request new books right before it goes into circulation for first dibs (don't tell anyone. In fact, forget I ever mentioned this). At this Barnes and Noble, I usually come here to purchase gifts, greeting cards, and maybe some Funko toys. Maybe. Hey, I only have a few dragons and its Queen mother! You might think you'll need to pay retail price for books, which may be the case for some books, but there are often discounts and deals that saves you money, and those savings do equate to online prices. I prefer the greeting cards at Barnes and Noble over Hallmark because they have the really classic, Victorian style sometimes that some friends and family like. It's a lot easier to find a card here than Hallmark. Everything is so clean and organized. It's nice to just browse around and enjoy the cool AC with an interesting book in your hand. There's also a lot of clearance items that are 75% off, and you can find a lot of great deals there. I love bookstores in general. I love to browse around. The only thing that's disappointing is they don't carry soundtrack CDs, and no more listening stations. read more

i first went shopping on Barnes & Nobles website and had all my books & DVD's placed on hold through their "in the store" availability option ..... made my shopping so much easier with my little toddler in tow !! you do need to pick up & pay for your DVD's in that back section of the store - but can purchase all your books their - not the other way around. Sadly, the bookstore is a dying thing, with online books and online ordering. I myself like to thumbs through pages of a physical book. This location is a pretty decent size and is probably the largest book store on this island. Staff is always friendly and fast helping me find what I'm looking for and is quick to offer to order anything out of stock. I guess since reading actually books aren't as popular with kids today, they always have a decent inventory. This location also has a Starbucks with a cafe area and lots of pastries. So it's great to grab a sweet bite to eat and relax with a book. It located at the lower level of the Ala Moana center just below the Lanai food court. read more

As an aspiring teacher, I was happy to learn that there are still more libraries in this country than there are McDonalds. Woo! Go, USA. The same cannot be said about bookstores though. After the closing of the Kahala Barnes and noble, I now come to the ala moana location to buy my books. Prices are not always the cheapest. If you're looking for cheap, try half.com or amazon. However, with the frequent coupons and membership card, it's not too terrible to my wallet. I like browsing the bargain books too. The workers are all pretty friendly and helpful. I don't like people who sit down for hours in the chairs spread throughout the store or at the Starbucks cafe.... Just buy the book and take it home already!!! The same can be said about the magazine section... For you Starbucks fiends out there, this Starbucks isn't a real Starbucks in that I don't think they take Starbucks gift cards/you can't get stars. Was perusing the shelves when I saw a book I wanted. Like any good shopper, I checked the B&N website to see if there was a better price. Alas, nearly $5 off online! I walked hastily to the information desk in the middle of the store and asked the clerk if they price match to the website. "To the Barnes and Noble website, yes." Thank you very much, nice lady! I shall buy my book with great haste and pride! I get to the cashier counter eventually (those value shelves are quite tempting), there's only one cashier and the line gets longer behind me. During the transaction before me, the lone cashier calls on her walkie for someone else to come and ring up. A few moments later, cashier Jaime M. comes up. She looks irritated and angry. She yells, "NEXT CUSTOMER HERE!" I sheepishly walk forward and place my two items on the counter. She grabs the top book and scans it. I say, "Can I price match that book to the online price?" She looks at me for a second, takes a breath and very loudly responds, "WE DON'T DO THAT! IF YOU WANT TO PRICE MATCH TO THE WEBSITE YOU NEED TO BUY IT AT HOME ONLINE BEFORE YOU GET HERE!" How am I supposed to buy a book online before I get to the book store if I didn't know what book I was going to buy before going to the book store? What this lady said to me doesn't make sense. I do no have telepathy or psychic abilities. I cannot transcend time and space to know things and desires before they occur. To make sure I heard her she repeats what she said again, as she's price matching my book. "WE DONT NORMALLY DO THAT, BUY THE BOOK ONLINE AT HOME FIRST!" I'm tired. This woman is older than me, and I was raised Asian. I do not talk back to my elders. I nod. I give her my email because she asked. She tells me to go buy a cookie with a venti drink. I nod. I'm being nice. I do not argue with retail workers. I am a retail worker, so I know the struggle. I've already made the decision to never shop there again. Seriously, this cashier turned me off of buying from this store again. It's the only Barnes and Noble on the island, you would think they'd have nicer people with better customer service skills. To summarize everything below, I had an unpleasant experience today, specifically from the music manager. No customer should leave feeling embarrassed and forced to buy an item because he or she is presumed suspicious. This for the kpop fans who buy their albums here: Never buy your albums here unless if you want to experience rude customer service. (Support your local businesses; for example, buy your albums at Pink Box!) In the back of the store, there is a music & movie section, holding a variety of *kpop albums*. As a kpop fan, of course I go straight to that section. I bought albums at this store previously without any problems; however, what I experienced today was disgustingly uncalled for. Coming from school, my friend and I walk in with our backpacks. I tend to be indecisive with my album choices, so I hold onto an album (which happens to be the last version as well) and browse around. As my friend and I look around the movie section while casually holding onto the album, an older white female with glasses (who happens to be the ~music~ manager) approaches us rudely, demands "give me the album," snatches the album, and places it in the front desk. Shocked, confused and completely speechless, my friend and I stand at the same position for a while to process what just happened. Perhaps she assumed we were suspicious with our backpacks and thought we were going to steal? Or thought she had more power than us because we are teens? Or, ( I hope this isn't the case) racially profiling us? Even if we were doing something wrong or suspicious, she should not have approached us rudely and should not have snatched the album out of my hand and walked away with it. What she should have done is ask politely, "Do you mind if we hold onto the album until you are ready to check out?" I am the customer and could have potentially bought the album. There was zero customer service when we walked into the section. No "how may I help you?" or "any questions or items you are looking for?" Instead, there was an aggressive "give me the album." She left my friend and me embarrassed. I have never felt this level of embarrassment as a consumer. Lastly, just to prove that I was not stealing, I ended up buying the album even though I planned not to. *sigh* $25 down the drain for a terrible experience. In fact, I do not want this album near me to remind me of this horrific moment. (The two stars are for the other employees who have treated me kindly and with respect during my previous visits. Is this really one of the last of its kind in Hawaii? I remember when I was a kid, my parents took me to several bookstores throughout the island, but growing up, I watched them all close one by one. Now you can read online, on your phone, or iPad, but I'm the type that still prefers to read from a book so I'm thankful that this one still remains. There are plenty of books here, but they've also expanded their collection of merchandise. They have stationary, board games, legos, toys, collectibles, stuffed animals, and even a Starbucks. My friend collects those Funko pop toys and Barnes and Noble usually has some exclusive toys so he gets really happy when I gift it to him. Today, I was looking for a gift for my friend's daughter. The worker in the middle kiosk was really helpful in finding the perfect book for an 8 year old who's into fairy tales and princesses. I even got a lego set that I know she would love. My only complaint is that I wish they would open their bathrooms. I know I know... covid. I get it, but a lot of other store have opened up theirs so it's not impossible. It's just that I had a handful of stuff when I needed to go, but I wasn't quite done shopping yet so I had to drop everything to go out and then come back to continue shopping. The Last Stand Lets face it. This is the last true big bookstore on the island as of 2019. Sure there are smaller bookstores and even librarys we can sort of include the mix, but in terms of the volume of variety, ample stockpiles, and newest arrivals, this place is it. Located Mauka side street level, and close enough to both foodcourts, Barnes and Noble Ala Moana, stepped up its game since my last visit by upgrading its WiFi. Coverage is noticeably more stable and improved. So why would I or anyone still visit a bookstore instead of getting eBooks, or digital versions online? Well first I for one, and probably many others as well, prefer something solid in their hands (that sounded bad). Sure I can quickly browse the internet for information, pictures, stories, or even recipes but its just not the same to have it all in your hands. What I mean is the way words bend around the curvature of pages, the sound of paper bring flipped when you finish a page, and just the feeling of absorbing information or a story without being hassled by an advertisment, virus link, or "click me now" notices. There are and there may be some huge advantages in conveniences we are slowly forgeting that we had and still have. Yeah online has its own advantages too but a big difference in the overall feel is instead of just having information in front of you, this bookstore has knowledge and information all around you so its probably a lot more easier to navigate and find what you are looking for. This place offers much more than just books and the layout of the store is organized enough to where I can remember where certain sections are and the novelty of walking into the store and immediately seeing the best sellers books propped up for display is always a plus. There is a coffee shop with snacks, chairs, tables, prolly a good place for quiet meetings. In the back, a dvd and music section complete with vinyl records. The Manga section had many collections and almost as large as specialty shops that focus on those items. There is even a kids section and there are also lots of toys for sale, collectibles, and even a board game night section.(yes these are slowly making a comeback)The store was clean and quiet during my visit and one of the stockers stocking books stopped what he was doing to help me find a book, so good service in my book (i see what you did there Jack) So yeah in a way, I do feel like this place is kind of the last stand from all the bookstores of yesteryear. In a way its a good thing because like a good book, it kind of feels like the final stop in what could be the end or the turn and beginning of a new era. read more

I accidently came across barnes & noble when I took the wrong elevator down. We decided to walk in after my husband said "I heard they sell Dragon ball stuff here" Yes, hes a huge dragon ball/anime fan. We found few dragonball stuff but not much because it was all sold out at the moment. I'm guessing because the new movie just came out. I didn't realize they carried so much more than just books. I wanted to buy so much stuff! They got so much anime and manga books too and lots of other interesting books. Ive always enjoyed going to book stores. Since the days of waldenbooks and borders. its the fun of walking into a book store and reading books. i used go to the barnes n nobles in kahala mall alot. I would always read books or hang out at the cafe with my computer. Sometimes i would look at the CDs or DVDs. to see whats there. About three years ago when i was there, i saw the store selling Gundam models. I was suprised something like that would be sold there. I did pick a model up from the BN at kahala mall. Now unfortunately BN is only in Ala Moana. I do go to that store a lot. Im always in the sci-fi section. or at the model racks Always ready for a good story. or looking for something to build. Also, the fact that they also brew Starbucks coffee is definitely a plus too! However, I wouldn't buy any dvds or music as I think they are significantly over-priced. I also think they need to better maintain their bathrooms as well, as they are always very unkept or unclean every time I visit this location. They possibly might need someone to periodically check the bathrooms throughout the day and have them better maintained. I hate to say it but the number of bookstores in the islands is limited. There is no one who said hello or welcome me with a warm smile. Lack of customer service. The selection of health care and nursing books are another short fall. I came here several times to find some useful review books, but there weren't too many. I came another time with two of my friends and they had the same selection of books. The prices are higher than what you pay online. I can get cheaper prices for the exact same book at a lower price or a used book on Amazon. Thank you for existing Amazon :) Before when there was Borders in Waikele, I remember going there with my parents after dinner in the area and browsing the book shelves and children's sections for new novels to read. Now you got to drive the distance from West Oahu (if you live in Pearl city, aiea, waipahu) to find your next reading material or a new bedtime reading book for your children through the shelves of books here. But I got to admit, the slashed down book shelves in the front of the store, right by the check out line have some amazing deals. You be lucky and unknowingly discover your next reading novel at a fraction of the price. My mom found a vegan cookbook for my aunt and uncle living in Indiana under 10 bucks, what a sweet deal!!! read more

I WAS CALLED A LIAR, MOCKED AND LAUGHED AT by a tall girl with curly hair who works at the coffee shop inside Barnes & Noble. It is acceptable to inform guests on policies about buying something if you are going to sit down- that is an expected and common rule. What is not acceptable is calling a guest a liar, mocking and laughing at them if they change their mind. My reason for changing my mind was that their tables were too small to hold two laptops and an ipad (not that I should have to explain myself). I am in shock and disbelief. Reading through reviews it sounds like this isn't the first time this has happened. If Barnes and Noble knows what's good for them they would hire people who better represent their company and who know how to communicate policies respectfully (the bare minimum). Poorly organized, narrow selection, books packed so tight and irregularly on the shelf you can't take them down easily without knocking other books down, dirty facilities crumbs all over the cafe floor, generally dirty floor, scarce staff in the stacks and worse still can't even sit down with a stack of books in the cafe to decide what to buy. To be clear this isn't a covid restriction - you can sit in the cafe you just can't look at the books while doing it. This is why bookstores are failing, the only advantage to a book store is being able to sip some coffee and look through potential purchases, maybe have some stimulating conversation while doing so. Barnes and noble demonstrates how badly they don't get it in Honolulu. I would honestly give them no stars as they have made themselves a pointless and unenjoyable business, which is a shame I used to spend hours and hundreds of dollars in Barnes and Noble - but chase me out of the cafe with a stack of books, your whole brand just died to me. read more

A wide selection of heavy duty hard cover books like books should be made. They also have alot of everything from collectibles to music and video. I now have over thirty something limited vinyls still unopened. They also provide great customer service and assist you at all times. The main guy there who is there most of the times. His name is Chris, He is great at helping customers and providing your needs. He is very knowledgeable in helping with what you are looking for. Great place to shop and enjoy the cafe!! Barns and Noble has gone downhill. I remember the days when I enjoyed coming here. I would sit at the provided chairs and skim through the books I was interested in. Now there is no where to sit, they took away all the chairs and replaced them with useless COVID signs. Since there were no seats I decided to sit on the floor as I skimmed through books and my phone to see which book I should get. While I sat there on the floor I was approached by a masked worker and rudely say, " You can't sit on the floor!" No excuse me sir and no explanation. There are no signs that say I can't sit on the floor only stay 6" distance signs. Now I know why Amazon has put so many of these B and N out of business. read more

They get 5 stars for not kicking me out while my 3 year old scream cried the entire time we were in the check out line. They also get 5 stars for having a starbucks inside that gives a discount if you have a B&N card. And I got my crying 3 year old an m&m blondie so he'd hush & then peace fell over the entire store. Great kids section too but they put the toy isle near it so BEWARE!! read more

Love the cafe here as well. They have a great selection of books and it's the only place that I go to purchase manga books on the island. Definitely a great place to chill and relax. They give buy one get one free cookie discounts along with your book purchases sometimes so make sure to check your receipts. read more

I love, love, LOVE books! Barnes and Nobles 99% of the holds any of the books I ever need from cook books, to journals, manga, self care, to mediation. They have something for everyone it feels like and I definitely cannot complain much especially since this is the only real bookstore Hawaii has left (sad sigh here). I came here to pick up 3 books yesterday that I had ordered the day prior. To my surprise, all three books were in stock (it was surprising since the genre is not much people are into). I drove from the West side to pick these up and the email says to go to the Customer Service Desk to pick up. Not a problem. I get there and there's even a sign that says online order pickup. I was the third person in line and after about a 10-15 minute wait I was told to pick up at the cashier. Another 10-15 minute wait, I stand in line and notice there's another sign that says "Online Order Pickup Here". I know it's just books picking up, but ordered online for a reason. The pickup email even states go to the Customer Service Desk. I think the email needs to be edited to say pickup with cashier and to remove the pick up sign by their Customer Service Desk. It's a small thing to complain about, but when you make the trek to Ala Moana from the west side and have to wait in line twice - it's not fun. Other than that little mishap, now I know for future reference (and for your reference too). Also, I'm going to add that purchase online and picking up in store is a huge move for Barnes and Nobles and makes our lives so much easier! Now we don't have to hunt down for what we need in each aisle (if you are easily distracted like me - this is a life saver)! Anyway, the workers are all kind and well-rounded in their knowledge of the products and books in store. I am thoroughly impressed with their customer service. If you buy lots of books (like myself) make sure to get the B&N Membership of $25. It is well worth it and you get additional coupons in your email! Didn't get to take any pictures because I was flustered from waiting and late to an appointment (didn't expect the lines on a Thursday at 2pm for both the Customer Service Desk and the registers). Will still come back again! Definitely worth the drive than to wait in the mail a couple of days. read more
