I really am not a huge complainer, but two major annoying things about this place... 1) no outlets to charge your device. I come here 2-3 times a week to do work with my clients (ambience is nice and it has great AC and coffee), but my computer often dies, or my phone. It is pretty annoying. You would think a book store/coffee shop would have outlets to charge...right? 2) They used to have a large jug of water for guests to pour their own water, but they haven't had that jug anymore for a few months probably. I recently went to ask a women working at the inside coffee shop to please fill up my container with water, she responded by saying, "there's a fountain in the back." Like okay, yes there is but also came up here specifically for the cold water. Pretty lame considering I am an avid customer. read more

Wow, today was my first time at Barnes and Noble in Ala Moana. I tried to use the Waze app to find where it was and it took me to the area where Crazy Shirts and Tommy Bahamas is. I learned that this is NOT where Barnes and Noble is located. Lol. So of course, I asked a nice stranger in the parking lot if he knew where it was and he pointed me in the right direction: down the ramp and to the right of the Satellite City Hall. I came here looking for two books in particular, which unfortunately they did not carry. However, the staff there were helpful and tried to tell me about different options where I could perhaps find them. So, if you're going there for something in particular, try calling ahead. Even though I didn't pick up the books that I wanted, I decided to make the most of my trip downtown to go to the cafe. I picked up an iced caramel macchiato and decided to write a bit on my computer. That area gets busy pretty fast. Some people are there to use their laptops, others are there to catch up with people. I always carry headphones with me...It's a life saver so you don't have to hear someone's conversation the whole time there (people were pretty loud). Overall, I'm still glad that this place still exists and would come back to visit because instant gratification and buying something on the spot is sometimes the best thing you need to do to treat yourself :) read more

Barnes and Noble is an immense book retailer located on the first level of the Ala Moana Shopping Center Macy's wing. This large bookstore has an amazing selection of books, magazines, DVDs, music, games and gift. There is also a Starbucks Coffee cafe within the store to sit and enjoy your coffee and some great books. The only problem with the cafe is that there are hardly every any open seats since Barnes & Noble has taken away much of their seating in the store, except in the children's section, which is also always full. A couple of times while shopping in the store (once with a friend) I sat tuckng myself completely out of everyone's way (not blocking anything or anyone) on the floor to make my final book decisions (I wasn't reading my selections as I've seen many others doing.) and was "scolded" by a female worker saying I wasn't allowed to sit on the floor. Give me a break... Every single time I have shopped in this store I have seen at least a teenager, college student or two sitting camped out in the middle of an aisle gathering their research or reading the latest graphic novel, which never bothered me. This store has a great selection of books and gifts, but I would prefer to give my business to a more customer friendly store than this one. No thank you. read more

Five stars for the bookstore itself. It's beautiful. One star for the terrible customer service. I was browsing around the store and three employees just ignored me like I was invisible. None of them greeted me or asked if I needed help finding a book. They were more interested in shelving the books. That's fine, don't greet me or offer me any help. I can live with that. What I can't live with is the sassiness of the cashier that rang me up. I had purchased a Star Wars keychain and told her that I didn't need a bag for it. Her response was,"I wasn't going to give you a bag. You're pretty high maintenance if you need a bag for a keychain." So what was she trying to say? If I had asked for a bag instead, I would have been high maintenance? I've bought small items before and other stores do provide bags for those. Then, she closes the transaction by telling me,"Thanks dear." I wanted to slap the sarcasm out of her. I would have told her off if I didn't have my kid with me. The whole way out the door, the song "Let It Go" was playing in my head. Other than that, the store itself is fabulous. They have a Starbucks in there. They also have a music and video department that sells CD's and DVD's. They also sell toys. I've seen Star Wars and Tokidoki items. They have a few chairs in the kids section where the youngsters can sit and read. My favorite sections in this bookstore are the travel, beauty and magazine. read more

I am impressed that they are open until 11pm. This usually wouldn't matter to me, but my kids were so looking forward to a trip to the bookstore and because of a flat tire, we didn't get to the mall until 9pm. But no worries. Barnes and Noble is open until 11pm. :D We visited the children's section which was really well organized. My daughter could easily peruse the chapter books available and my son could look at the appropriate books for his age group. I'm not really a fan of the amount of toys they have in the children's section, but I guess it is convenient for shoppers looking for a gift. I purchase most books online because of convenience, but a visit to B&N was a good experience for my children because they could see and touch the books they were interested in and make a decision on their own. read more

This is the number one book store I like coming to. It carries all the new books, has new book release parties, features authors from time to time and local ones too, it is easy to find a book you are looking for or to peruse a certain category, you can read a book sitting in one of the few chairs through out the store, and you don't have to buy anything. I'm always surprised how BN, and others, act like a library before buying. It wasn't that long ago I would go into another bookstore before BN and Borders appeared that I was told you can look at the book but you cannot read the books or magazines. I understand the reason but well, that bookstore is no longer here. Recently I was there looking over the new teen books. Another customer was explaining how her and her son just begun reading sci-fi\fantasy and was asking for suggestions on what to read next. The CSR could not help her, could not even make one simple suggestion. I don't know, but his tone implied to me he really didn't feel like helping this fairly early in the morning before lunch couldn't afford to buy any more coffee. You know, that kind of day. I haven't had one of those myself in awhile. So, I interrupted their conversation during a long pause of silence. I asked her what she liked about the books that they read. I was then able to suggest several books which she was so happy to hear. In fact, I think she got rather excited as she picked everything I recommended. I told her it might be better if you start with a few and I whittled down my suggestions in her hand advising her if you like those then you can always come back for those. It was nice they had everything I could recommend for her to check out and get a feel of what they are about. Even though the CSR explained he didn't read this genre he still should have been able to make suggestions even from just stocking you will know atleast what is selling well by author or title. Then again, what do you expect from minimum wage. One good thing is if they do not carry a book you are looking for, asking the right CSR can help you by looking through their system and might be able to order and place on hold for you. On average takes about 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer. Recently, I noticed, they are carrying a nice variety of vinyl albums which I found interesting. Is this making a come back? Maybe I should have never sold my collection decades ago. The children's books are well stocked and encompasses every age level and reading level. That I liked alot. In some areas where I lived in the past decade, it was difficult to acquire the appropriate reading books for my son. BN has helped me in that area. There's a wide variety of collectible toys and retro games. Their DVD section remains large but never really looks too busy these days. All in all, BN remains a good resource to acquiring books new, old and hard to find. read more

In this modern mad world, it's a wonder that printed book stores still exist. In a city like Honolulu there just aren't many left. I'm glad to have one as nice as this so close to my home. Barnes & Noble is an impressive chain as it has weathered the digital transition by modifying how it does business. As easy as it is to order things online, sometimes there are certain items you want to check out in person. There are a number of publications I prefer to buy in person, so this is my one-stop shop to find them all. Selling more than just books, they have an ample selection of magazines, games, toys, and DVDs/Blu-ray. My only complaint with B&N and this location specifically is that everything is cover-priced or over, making it hard to justify the premium over an online retailer. This location is nestled in an ugly part of Ala Moana Center in the lower parking garage near the Keeaumoku entrance/exit. It is usually hot and smoggy from all the traffic, also loud. You'll quickly forget that after entering as the store is literally a breath of fresh air. Temperatures are kept comfortably cool. One of my favorite smells in the world is that of books, so it's always a pleasure to stop and smell the roses. The store is well lit and clean. Usually busy, it's a place for locals and tourists alike. The coffee shop is almost always busy, with countless people reading books or relaxing. The selection here is the best on the island for new material. The game selection is large (but many are too expensive). Specialty toys are also plentiful. The checkout counter is long and usually has many cashiers on-hand to make checkout go quickly. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable if you have a question. This is one of my favorite stops on my trips to Ala Moana Center. read more

This place should fall into a list of "places you MUST visit before they become EXTINCT." I've always found a bookstore (of any kind) to be one of my favorite places to go. It's a treasure of information on everything you could possibly want to know in life... and in the world for that matter! But then again, I know deep inside - I'm a nerd and i'm channeling my library aide experiences as a young child into adulthood. Since moving to Hawaii I've seen several bookstores close and it's quite unfortunate really. Kids nowadays are just too darn smart and all the technological advances have reduced this generation to ipad, mac, i-phone, tablet, laptop toting folks. Don't get me wrong...I understand I can stunt progress, but nothing beats the smell of a new book and perusing the many aisles of books, books and more books! So....this B&N is found at Ala Moana mall (yay...my favorite place to go to - NOT). But reality is, if I want to go to a bookstore - my choices are few and nil on this island. I always feel like I'm a dungeon when I head out to this bookstore entrance - only because it's semi-lit and tucked away next to the DMV. But once inside, I just get all giddy and happy inside. I usually start hitting my favorite aisles - home improvements, cooking, TRAVEL, journals and calendars, fiction and then the magazine aisles. I literally could spend the whole day here!! When I was preparing for our wedding, this bookstore was amongst my favorite places to go to. I could check out all the bridal mags, jot notes and then check out the wedding books on proper do's and don'ts without having to make a one time purchase for a book I will probably never need again. The only reason I gave this business a 4 star was because there is a LACK of seating for those like myself who like to sit and read a bit before making a purchase. Also I found that the staff will not allow you to sit in the aisles (i can understand their reasoning behind this...so why not avail more seating?). Additionally, there are a few us out there who have physical ailments that do not allow for prolonged standing - so for this matter, seating is a must. **Remember to sign up for B & N rewards card/program - if you're like me, you've signed up for a ton of these already. But the beauty of this is you DO get discounts on your purchases and you do NOT have to carry your card with you - just remember the name or phone number you registered under and they will be able to search for your reward that way. read more

I still love brick and mortar book stores and I miss the days when more existed. Don't get me wrong, I love technology and the conveniences it brings. I love Amazon, Kindle, iTunes, etc. but there's nothing like the experience of browsing through stacks of books or sitting and reading while enjoying a cup of coffee. Barnes & Noble - one of the last bookstores on the island. Because of that, I will visit you as often as I can. I will throw money at you in exchange for books that I can immediately get my hands on. Just the thrill of opening a book and turning a pages very important to me! They are located on the 1st floor of the Ala Moana Shopping Center, mauka side. There is a lot of parking available, but can fill up quickly as the mall opens. The store is large. There is even a Starbucks inside - complete with tables! These tables are often already taken by people reading and eating. Good luck getting those seats. As you enter the store, there is an assortment of books for sale. This is not really a great place for it, because it can get crowded in that entryway/exit. Right thru the doors, you immediately see the Nooks on display with their own counter/area. Starbucks and their tables are to the right, behind the magazines. To your left, there are more bargain books and the cashiers. As you continue through the store, you will see that it is organized into sections. The toy and game section, the mystery section, the cookbook section, the CD/DVD/Vinyl section at the back of the store, the Children's section (probably the coolest section) to the right, etc.. Smack dab in the middle of the store is the information desk. I can spend HOURS here. I mean, I am surrounded by books. The smell of books is just so sweet to me. (My dream job was to be a librarian.) There are so many books, that I find something (or lots of things) to take home with me. If you are like me, I suggest you get the membership card. It is a yearly fee of $25 that gives you a discount on your purchases. (Please see complete details with a bookseller.) The staff is usually helpful. On the rare occasion that I need help, they are there for me. Maybe not with a smile, but not with a condescending glare either. I did have one issue on my last visit here. We came here with the intention of participating in Mini Maker Faire. I even called ahead to get the details and times. When we got there, they were packing up. I stood on the side waiting to speak to one of the associates regarding the schedule. She was speaking with someone already, so I didn't want to interrupt. I waited for about 5 minutes, but then realized she was speaking with her friend, not a customer! The associate knew I was there, but did nothing to end her conversation. I thought that was very unprofessional and just plain rude. I gave up and went to talk to the info desk, but apparently the person that was talking to her friend was the one I should talk to be about the fair. Guess that wasn't happening. If only she was as good as her co-workers. So, because it is one of the last bookstores, I am forced to come here. My love of books has not diminished because of this one bad apple, but if it continues, I may have to reconsider ordering online. read more

Came in to purchase Pokémon cards today with my husband. We purchased two different sets of Pokémon cards. When we decided to come back and make another purchase, ....... Said she listed us as "one costumer" who has already bought some cards and it's limited to "one" costumer/day. What I don't understand is, how does "two" people constitute as "one" costumer?! She didn't give us any reason, except she just made that excuse and told us no. Unprofessional, unreasonable, and definitely unfriendly. So we had our friend purchase two different sets with another sales associate and he was able to do it.... Something is wrong here and obviously someone was wrong with the wrong view on store policy! Get it together and train your associates Barnes. I asked for the sales associates name with another associate and he doesn't even fully know her name and believe her name to be "Jenna" or something. With Borders gone, Barnes & Noble is the undisputed best bookstore on Oahu in regards to selection. The Kahala location and the one in Ala Moana are about the same size. Though I find this location to be preferable to Kahala since there are not very many reasons to visit that mall except for Whole Foods or Macy's. The B&N at Ala Moana just provides more reason to visit the largest mall in Hawaii. The store is on the street level of Ala Moana, but covered by the parking structure. This makes it feel like the store is in an underground location. The store ceilings also seem to be somewhat low giving it a basement feel. However, the book selection can not be denied. The store also has a cafe which is another place to get some Starbucks and the CD and DVD section is worth a visit. Particularly if you are looking for Hawaiian music. The closure of Borders and the Tower chain before it has left somewhat of a void in regards to its distribution in Hawaii. The store has also diversified its offerings. They have more gift oriented items like origami kits, notebooks, board games and toys that would be great Christmas presents. And for tourists, they have a great assortment of Hawaii related books by the cafe that would make for a nice trip souvenir if you are looking for something different from the usual macadamia chocolates. If you are looking for a book locally in Hawaii, Barnes & Noble is pretty much the only game in town. Fortunately, it happens to be a very good large bookstore. read more

I have been coming to barnes and noble since I was 10 years old. I always loved to go to the kids section and read books but now I'm 21 years old and go to the manga section of the store. I go to barnes and noble to read anime books and buy some anime plush. Yes I am a otaku and I love to read manga and watch anime as well. Coming to barnes and noble is like my home because its filled with books I like and its a quite place to study when doing homework. Theres also a starbucks inside the store so you can do homework, study, get coffee and do other business stuff. I usually come here for the manga and coffee all the time, I also buy a few manga books that I'm interested in if they catch my eye. The people here are really friendly and will help you find the books you need. If they don't have the book in-stock they will help you order the book and have it ship to your place. I had a few books ship to my place and they delivery took like a week at least for my mangas to come in. They have a guest service desk in the middle of the book store where you can get help looking for your books or other things like DVDs. If your looking for a book store I recommend Barnes and Noble because its the only book store that have a great section of books and deals! read more

It's really sad and disappointing to see that all the book stores in Hawaii have closed down. I have been reading to my daughter since she was only 3 months old, now she's 3 years! She absolutely loves books and story time at night so I really appreciate having a place like Barnes and Nobles. If you purchase books frequently, I recommend you signing up for the membership. I believe it's $20 or $30 for a year but you get 10% off your entire purchase and they send 20% off coupons on single items quite often. If you have a child like I do, sign up for the kids membership, it's FREE! After you spend $100 you get a $5 coupon. If you want both memberships, you are able to link the two accounts together...but be aware because for some reason my email address on my kids membership got changed by an employee and I wasn't receiving my rewards (we had to question a cashier about it). We spend a ton of money on children's books so I know we missed out on several $5 off coupons. Book Nerds Unite! I love reading... I really do. Although there are electronic books, I still prefer feeling the hard cover of a book and turning the pages. I love browsing through the journal section and selecting a journal to write...vowing to fill it with interesting words or drawings from the first page to the last...only to fill it half-way and placed with other journals that are not completed. I love classic lit...I love military history... I love mysteries... I love any book that catches my attention in the first paragraph of the first chapter I love everything about reading... Everytime that I am shopping at Ala Moana, I will normally detour to this store "just because" If anyone was to ask me what kind of gift I would like? It is definitely a gift card to a book store. You gotta love the last bookstores on the island! The customer service is really quick in finding a book for you and if they don't have it they are really apologetic! In the DVD section, there a ton a $4.99 to $9.99 tv series and movies for sale. Though its kind of like a hunt in order to find the right movie or show for you. The book sections are really good and they even have a great table section for Harry Potter! Speaking as a Harry Potter fan, finding this was GREAT as I was able to buy the new fully illustrated version of the sorcerer's stone. Though heads up, Barnes and noble tends to charge the full publishers price unless it has that red sticker with a percentage off. So if you use your membership card and bring some coupons it's not that bad. And let me tell you that new Harry Potter book is totally worth it! It's even in the kids section, where you can take your kids or for me my cousin for storytelling. Remember Barnes and Noble is the last bookstore on the island. Sure there is Jelly's and Bookoff, but there is really nothing like holding a new book in your hands. Truly Barnes and Noble is the only place you can get it! read more

For new books at reasonable prices, you can't beat this place. Barnes & Noble has a wide selection of books to meet all variety of reading tastes. It's easy to find books because they're all neatly filed by genre and author. They also offer best sellers at discount prices so it's worth perusing their sales shelves. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. If you're going to visit regularly, they do have a frequent shopper program that is good to join. My kids and I love going to Barnes and Noble every time we go to Ala Moana. It has everything! Books, toys and coffee! I swear I can hang out here all day and just read random stuff. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I know some books can be pricey but I got the membership and I'm saving 10-40% for everything (yes, including coffee!) It's worth it especially if you go there a lot. Also a great place for finding some random gift ideas. They have a lot of cute and unique stuff. I sure can be a bookworm - especially if I'm all caught up in a series that I can't just put down. Sadly I think this is the only big named book store left on the island. It's located on the bottom floor of Ala Moana Mall, near the Satellite City Hall. When I'm not lazy to check out all these stores that sells used books, Barnes & Noble is my go-to for all my reading material needs. It's very easy to just wander the store and be amazed and how many books they hold and to get lost into while you're there...you could end in there for hours & I know this from experiencing it, first hand! I know that times has changed, as technology makes it much easier for us to access books - but I'm the type who absolutely loves to PHYSICALLY have the book in my hands..there's just something about holding the book and turning the pages that pleases me. My favorite part about this store is the fact that I'm able to place books on hold if they have it in stock. All I have to do is go online, search up the book I'm looking for and wait till I get the email stating that it's ready for pick up. I don't have to deal with searching high & low in a specific book myself. Once I get the email, they place it on hold for you for a couple days & you just go up to the front to pick up and pay for it. But for those who do enjoy the experience of being in the store and getting lost yourselves, the workers are usually really nice. If you can't find something specific, go to their customer service area, right in the middle of the store, and any worker would be more than happy to help you out. read more

So, a year ago I went to Barnes and Nobles with a friend to look at books. When we went to the cashier to pay for books she was short of funds so I told her i would pay for her books. Turned out her membership had expired so told the cashier I would pay this time for the renewal also. A year later a got another charge to my checking account for another membership renewal. They had taken my debit / checking account information and without my consent charge me again for a membership that is not even In my name. Called the store and was told there's nothing they can do ?! I would have to call the membership department and straighten it out myself. Never mind why they did was illegal and immoral to take and capture my debit information for their future use. Guess I'll call the Better Business Bureau to see what type of actions can be taken against this unfair business practice. Guess the moral is be careful when your using your debit or credit card as large companies as this can retain your information for their future usage with or without your permission. read more

Every time I come here, I feel like a kid at a candy store. I'm a bookworm and I've been coming here more than I expected. They have a variety of books and I think I'll be gifting a lot of things from Barnes & Noble to my family and friends this Christmas. The staff are so knowledgeable about where things are and all of that. The only thing I kinda don't understand is the price difference between buying online and buying it at their store. It's more pricey at the store than online most of the time. Why? I really don't know. They're open until 11:00pm which I love! And they have a cafe in there which can be crowded most of the time, but its still good as they serve Starbucks. My boyfriend supports my trips to Barnes & Noble and I'm glad he does! I love book stores & it's a shame that this is the last large book store on the island. It's a great place to hang out, drink coffee and read. They carry most books I've looked for, however when they don't have what you're looking for they can order it and have it shipped to the store if you're willing to pay and wait for your item. My son loves the kid's section, lots of books and toys (both educational and just for fun). Most of the associates I've encountered were friendly and helpful. I wish there were more book stores on the island. There's a membership fee if you'd like a discount, or if you sign up for their free mailing list they will send you coupons every so often. read more

This was the next place we looked at for music books. Asked for a worker where it was and he gave us a visual of where it was. It didn't take long before we found a piano book. There wasn't much books though but the one we chose had some variation. After we went to the children's books section and picked up a book or two. There are a lot of books! Sometimes I wish I was a kid again. But I'll still read them! The aisles are clean. There aren't books left on the floor or whatnot. As we headed to the counter, we took a look at the stationary.
