How can this place only have 3 stars. Everyone stop what you're doing and head over to Barnes and noble. We have to keep supporting these book stores so they don't disappear. And they have SO much more. The biggest puzzle collection I've seen. They also have so many legos and cool crafts. To make things even more exciting they have a cafe. And booooooiiiii is it good. You can sip on Harney and Sons tea (if you know you know) or grab a Starbucks coffee. They also have mini pies, tarts and more. It's so cute because it's all served on a cafeteria tray. We got a book and to the cafe to read and eat our goodies. read more

I just miss the aimlessly walking around a huge bookstore and sitting down to read. They have a few tables in the Cafe area but it's not the same. This location by far is the worst B&N I've ever visited. The overhead bright white lights make it feel like a morgue, unfortunately, it lacks morgue's cleanliness. Went to use the bathroom: i have seen cleaner bathrooms at gas stations. URINE stains EVERYWHERE, smell of ammonia is nauseating. Toilet paper bits all over the floor. I don't think they ever cleaned it. Overall, this store doesn't make you want to stay and linger. You just want to get your cheap, mediocre burger and get out. P.S. Hi. My friend went to this Barnes and noble. and got a book and candle, but it was 40 dollars in total so she didn't get the candle, and gave the cashier 50 dollars, since she wanted to save more money. The cashier told her that they didn't give her a 50 dollar bill, and if she did then she would've gotten the candle. Like, what if you just DONT want it?? This is what the cashier said, "The lady at the register said that you didn't have any fifties. You couldn't buy the candle along with the book" basically calling her broke. but would give her 20 bucks in return. She did everything to get it back, for example asking to see the cameras in the store, asked the manager, everything. but they still said NO. I recommend you not to go to this Barnes & Noble, because this is just HORRIBLE customer service . this is just straight up BS. read more

They got my change wrong, I gave them a 50 and they marked it as a 20. My job only pays me in 50 dollar bills so I'm confident that was the amount I'd paid. I told one of their employees that I believed there was a mistake and they told me they'd check the register and camera footage. When she came back she told me that there wasn't anything there and she saw it with her own two eyes. I know for a fact I only pay in 50 dollar bills so I'd asked if I could see the footage or if someone else could confirm it. She told me that the lady who was at the cashier said I couldn't have possibly had multiple 50 dollar bills because I asked her to put away a candle for me, mind you this, the candle was 25 dollars. I didn't request she put it away because I was broke, I asked her because it was a very overpriced candle. The girl who was at the register knew that I had put it away for this reason too because she told me "Yeah, that's a pretty expensive candle if I do say so myself." They have terrible customer service and I'd give this place a zero if I could. read more

I do like Barnes n Noble but this is an odd store. It has kind of a cold feel to it. The have a Starbucks but good luck getting a table. A bus just pulled up and 15 high school students came in and took the tables when I was in line to get a table. They did not order anything. The store is packed but everyone is treating it like the library. Free internet and a good place to study. I just saw one guy bring 5 magazines to browse through at his table. One kid brought in their own coffee. Ha. You could not make that up. This is a very different kind of place than other Barnes and nobles I have been to. It is not all bad, there is fantastic people watching, but the books take a backseat to everything else. read more

Workspace first...hangout second...bookstore last. TBH, I'm not exactly sure how I feel about the new one story space. I like how clean, minimal and new it is, but maybe not for a bookstore. I tend to appreciate a two-story layout with a more cozy, intimate setting. Here you'll find an open, sparse, and spacious interior. One of my favorite things about a bookstore is the magazine section. Here the magazine selection is a let down from the former Hawthorn location. It's small and curated, but again I don't think the intent of the new concept is books/magazines. The cafe has some kinks to work out. I waited 15 minutes to get to the counter, and there were only a couple customers in front of me. They were very apologetic. If they want the concept to be more of a work space, they will need to pick this up. Most of the seating is communal, with lots of charging stations. You won't find many nooks with small tables or oversized cozy chairs. Customer service was friendly. Hmmm... read more

Interesting concept! It's a little on the colder side and definitely doesn't have that cozy atmosphere that other B & N locations possess. However, I'm glad that they are experimenting in order to try to meet the demands of customers in a 21st century market. It will be intriguing to see how this evolves. read more

The WORST B&N I have ever been in. What were they thinking?! They left that amazing two story space, that had become a fixture in the community, to occupy this lifeless strip mall crevasse? I've been to temporary outlet book stores that are better designed than this. The only good thing about it, is that I don't imagine it will be open for long. It's tragic. read more

I love B&N and have been to multiple locations all over the country. That being said, I just had an awful experience at the Vernon Hills B&N. They have a 30 minute limit which I completely understand enforcing it when multiple tables are occupied, but I just got kicked out even though ALL other tables were empty and there were maybe two people walking around the store. So my question is: did they kick me out because of this rule or was it based on my appearance and race? There's nothing scientific about allowing people to sit for 30 minutes instead of 35, especially when there's no one else around. I'm very disappointed and concerned about the true motives for kicking me out. read more

This location is the new one to replace the location that was at Hawthorne mall. The entire store now is one level which I absolutely love. Although the mall location did feel a tad bit bigger I'm sure it's due to the multiple level. The store is brightly lit and overly staffed with workers to help you. The areas are marked off nicely and easy to find when looking for age categories and genres. The staff are very friendly and overly helpful. I loved that they were very attentive to my children that are in love with the dog man and Harry Potter series and a staffer listened to all of their excitement about what they had read what they were looking for today and so on. Not only did she listen but she sat with them as well as took them over and showed them some other cool books that they may want to read next. The children's area is a tad bit small to me as we usually like to sit and read a little bit before leaving. The old store had a more spaced out area that was more cozy than the current set up that is in this location. read more

I don't get all the haters here.... I always found the mall location difficult to navigate when searching out particular subjects. This space is light and airy and yes, pretty darn good for working with the usual faux bux cafe. Staff is helpful and friendly and otherwise it's your usual B&N. If you want a more cozy and book reading friendly place, check out Barbara's bookstore in Hawthorne mall -- they have tons of couches for reading and chilling, but if you want a bright place to get work done, then this Barnes and Nobles is a good place to be. Not a fan of the new store. Used to love the one when it was at Hawthorn Mall. They moved across the street into a strip center. The strip center is nice - however the new Barnes and noble bookstore is more like a thrifty books store. Same set up warehouse feel. The café is typical, we tried to enjoy a latte and some seating, but the sun is blinding. All in all less books and not worth driving to. read more

First of all, I'd like to say that the environment is amazing. I feel like I could go there to get work done or to just hang out with friends. The workers there are also very friendly and willing to help out. It's a long story, but my friend's shoe ended up getting stuck in an unreachable place. This new store is so bright and welcoming, yet the selection got smaller. The staff is not top notch and I feel like this business is missing the mark. I have not renewed my membership because it is far more cheaper to order for pick-up with that discount than it is to pick the book up when you go in with the 10 % discount. read more

Ugh. I'm not commenting on selection or staff because I only came to get my free drink and do some homework with my kid in a different place than our kitchen table. I knew someone would use the tired "bright clean spacious" descriptors, but all I see when I look across the store is a glorified TJ Maxx type place with cheap flooring and headache-inducing lights. Hint: "clean bright and spacious" only means less cost for the builders, and the look will die off after a few years, as it should -- especially for a book store!! read more

I used to love going to the old location at the mall with my children. They had a great children's area that was away from all of the adult and teen books as to not bother other shoppers. This new location is horrible. You walk in and can see the cafe and eating area is almost larger then the entire book area. The children's area is too out in the open and I was constantly asking them to stay quiet because we were so close to everyone else. This whole place is way too sterile and their book selection is terrible as well. There were several books that I wanted and they didn't have in stock so I ended up ordering from Amazon. At the old location that was never an issue for me. I'm sad that my kids have had a great bookstore taken from them and put into this sterile office feeling place. We won't be going back. The Deerfield location is now our new book store. read more

Once upon a time this was a great bookstore, one of the best stores in Vernon Hills. Then they moved across the street, shrunk their square footage and staff, and now they are what you'd expect - the last gasp of a dying business plan. Don't even bother coming here to browse. You're better off a Half-Price books, or one of the older Barnes and Nobles in the area that are still standing. This place will close before Christmas, 2019. read more
