I went in yesterday to bring in a complete set of lost in space VHS (all seasons), and a few full boxes of older books and other book sets. The people and especially one of the guys in the buyback section was somewhat rude to me and told me to leave the area while they looked at my boxes and books. I told him that I wanted to go through one of the boxes before I let them digest the donation. I was concerned about something accidentally being in the box. He was still rude and told me to go away. Eventually when they called me back to the counter, they only showed me a few of the items that I had brought and offered me a pittance or penny on the pound. They also broke up the Book collections and the VHS TV series collection and said they only needed three of the videotapes and none of the duplicates. I immediately knew that they didn't even check that there were no duplicates and it was a complete TV series. I also asked what happened to the other stuff that I said I wanted to check before they did something to it and they said that they were going to donate it or give it to another store. They didn't offer me any cash value for the items that they wanted to donate or trade to another store. After a bit of time, another manager was called out and said it was OK for me to see and check my donation. But they wouldn't let me go behind the counter and claimed that I had to do everything over the counter. They had placed everything behind the counter. The Schaumburg store was a lot more friendlier and more engaging and understanding. There's something really off about this store location and it made me highly uncomfortable. read more

If it is worth your time and effort to drag heavy books into Half Time Books, then go for it but don't expect more than a penny on the dollar...if that. Then count the cost of gas to go to/from the location. In my case my go forward plan is to gift my old books to the garbage and not waste my time given what they paid really didn't cover the cost of my gas, let alone my time. read more

If you're buying, there are some good finds here at good prices. Books, CDs, DVDs, records, VHS and a bunch of random memorabilia. Front staff person was beyond friendly! If you're selling...well...don't. They give you next to nothing and you're better off donating the items, helping people out, plus getting the tax write off. I have read some reddit & quora threads of staff dreading huge loads people bring in. You'll never get anywhere near what you're expecting, so mentally prepare for that. I brought in a box of 40 cds, some new in the package and got $10 with some good titles and groups. I had looked them all up on ebay and none were valued over $10 so it wasn't worth it to sell individually. But now I wish I just sold them in one big lot there. But I digress. Though I do a lot of my book buying from Amazon or watch Youtube videos instead of reading books, I do appreciate that a place like Half Price Books exists. I like having a large selection of gently used books that allows me to explore different topics at a bargain price, without being overwhelmed buy the endless choice that Barnes and Noble offers. I also like how they carry lots of other used items from collectables to video games, offering some options for price conscious gift options and the option to pick up fun comics or game guides that I may not normally consider buying at full price. The best feature here is the option to sell items to Half Price Books as they've accepted everything I've brought in so far. This is a great way to declutter the house and get some cash in return for books that I would likely not read again. read more

As a physical book reader, I love trying to find copies of books at a cost effective price but also to give books a new home. Half price books offers just that. They also busy gently used books if you'd like to get rid of some of your bookshelf. I've shopped at various locations but this one is the closest one to home. This is a smaller location but they are fully stocked with books. They have a section for new and trending books, and different areas by themed just like any bookstore. On top of books; they have dvds, cds, vinyl and more. I often come here when I'm looking for a specific book to give another home to before hitting Barnes & Noble and often find new books to read. The only thing keeping it from a five stars is that the shelves are never quite organized. It makes it so much easier to find books when they're organized by author but you can find an author on 3 different shelves and area in the same section. I have SOOOOOOOOOOOO many books that take a loooooooooooot of space on my bookcases that I will never read again. I finally got around to taking my books to Half Price Books to see what I could get for them. My main goal was to make more space in my house and declutter. Getting any money in return was a bonus. I had tried other apps where I would have to box and ship the books and they would only take some of my books. Half Price Books took all of the books that I brought in and gave me $57.05 for those books. This was much more money than I was hoping to get. I will be coming back with another load of books to create space. When I am out of books to read I will shop there selection and see what new treasures I can find. I like this store. There used to be one closer to me, but it closed. I found a book I had been looking for, and a few others too. The prices are decent (compared to the Schaumburg location) and you pay Lake Co. taxes. I want to go back and get one book I decided to leave behind. The guy at the counter was polite enough. I wish they had a way you could look up stock like a library, because it can be hard to know whether you've missed something, but it's worth a trip. read more

This place is likely to be the worst Half Price location to sell to! They really DON'T want your books, DVDs, CDs, etc. I called before I went; I felt deceived. Through the years I have purchased many items from HPB but had not sold anything there for quite a while. I went to HPB in Vernon Hills with about 70 to 80 movies and TV series on DVD, half of which were still sealed and unused. I was offered $3.60. They offered me less than 5 cents per disc. They sell DVD's for roughly $5 to $10 per DVD yet seem to think it was a fair offer. I will no longer patronize a place that so insults its own customers. read more

I absolutely love this store! I've been coming here for years. In addition to loving books myself, I'm also a grade school teacher, so I often find myself stopping into the store once or twice a week. Not only are the prices completely unbeatable, but everything they sell is in excellent condition. There is no difference in the quality of their books than the larger more well known book store, which charges at least three times more. read more

Out of the Half Price Books I've been too, my finds at this location have been the best! They have a large clearance section compared to other stores, and very kind salespeople. I was able to buy a bunch of kids' chapter books and graphic novels that I wasn't able to find earlier the same day in Skokie! Great selection and a clean space! This is a teacher's dream. I came here when I was visiting family in Mundelein. I am from Florida and the closest HPB to me is hours away, so I was super happy there was one near me when I was on vacation! Overall my experience was good. Staff was very helpful when I needed help finding specific books. However they were not that good with recommendations... I feel like people working in bookstores should like books. The people in here couldn't even recommend one dystopian novel that wasn't Hunger Games. Clearance section is also okay, though everything is $3 or less. Overall I got 3 books( 2 paperback and one hardcover) for $16 read more

Very disappointed at this HPB location. Tried to resell DVDs that were sealed And said I needed proof of purchase. Have sold to half-price books for over 15 years and this location always seems to have a problem with everything. Also at this location they tend to give the lowest price of anything you try to sell them. For instance they will give you $.25 for a Sealed DVD a nickel for a brand new book, ridiculous! This store (company) is really disappointing. No, they do not buy things back for a good price at all...but this store is the most insulting in the area. They consistently offer the lowest buyback prices yet they charge the most for their stuff. Why are your clearance items five dollars? No other store charges that much for their clearance. DO NOT SELL YOUR BOOKS/DVDs HERE!! IT'S A SCAM. I brought in 100+ banker's boxes of a military history book collection I inherited. Was given a BS sales pitch on the phone about how much value I had with so many hardcover and coffee table books. I had to rent a uHaul to move them all. Got there, and despite being told I'd get help unloading them, they stopped helping after 3 loads. There were about 25 loads. They tell you to wait in the store while they sort through it, presumably to force you to shop. For 3+ HOURS!? There are zero benches or anywhere to wait... I watched them go through the collect. Instantly threw away at least 1/2 of it. I get it, they're used books, but just trash em? End of the day, they offered me $183. The uHaul cost $40. If you cherish books, you're better off donating them to the library or somewhere that will value them. This is not the place. You're basically donating to their business so they can profit. read more

Same negative experience selling books and media to these cheap skates. 20 hardcover books (most of which were bought new $15 - $25 range) Few Cd's and Dvd's. Eveything in near-new condition. Their offer? $16!!!!! They will re-sell everything for at least $150. If that stuff wasn't so heavy I would just bring everything back and throw it in recycling bin. While browsing their CD section, about every cd/disc that I looked at was noticeably worn and scratched. $7 for CD that should cost no more than $2 in this kind of bad shape. Don't sell to these snakes. Not worth the hassle. Just donate to library and write it off on taxes. read more

They stated that even though the books were in great condition (most were non-fiction, no beat up pocket or hardcover fiction) they simply didn't have space in their store for most so, they wouldn't pay much for them. I really like this store. But how can you call it Half Priced Books when the books are $8 and $9 a piece for kids books? Barnes and Nobles Sells the same books for the same price across the street. My experience selling books, DVDs, and LPs was very disappointing. I brought in at least 100 items and got about $11 back. I didn't care much for that quote but ended up accepting because I'd lugged all these items into the store and didn't feel like lugging them all the way back to the car and back to my house. Just returned from HPB in Vernon Hills never to return, and never to recommend. Brought in about 45 books to sell; James Patterson, Jodi Picoult and an old series known as the color fairies. All hardcover books were in excellent condition with original book jackets in perfect condition. Paperbacks were also in excellent to very good condition. The girl obviously thought a paperback shouldn't show any wear in the spine. A couple had a little bend in the cover. So what was I offered for all of those books? Get ready for it-a whooping $4.50! What an insult. I told them I'd rather donate them and they then told me that they took donations. I told them, that my next stop was Goodwill. To top it off in the middle of going through my books the girl went behind the desk and whispered something to another clerk with her back to me. They need to have some signage up as to how they price books so that it's done in a more equitable manner. Also what's with needing an id before giving you a quote? Very bad experience! read more
