Books and books and more books = heaven on Earth.
    Roseann M.

If I die and wake up at This Old Book, I'll know I've been admitted to heaven. Because, books. And books. And even more books. How big is this place? Does that aisle keep going back and back and back? Oh boy, does it ever. With more shelves of books? Thank goodness there are two armchairs about half way through the store. I'm getting palpitations. History and biography and science fiction and cook books and mystery and fiction -- well, not so much fiction for me, but more history -- and oh my, even a kids' area near the back. My hand is itching, longing to grab my credit cards and pile up all that I want at the front counter, charging and charging until my credit card is smoking. This Old Book is That Kind of Place. The scent of printed pages fills my brain. I'm getting dizzy again. Wandering towards the front of this store, and I find racks of posters and old maps. I am fascinated by maps. I pull a few from the rack and stare intently at the little lines and various colors. There are also travel posters. My favorite one is on the wall behind the register -- "travel by TARDIS." I wouldn't mind doing that myself, except that you can't be sure where you're going until you arrive. These are all used books, obviously cared for and loved. Nothing is in tatters. All are clean and fresh and look like they are new. The prices are second-hand book prices, which only sends me further and further into rapture. I pick up a few and tote them under one arm, and force myself to make my purchase and leave, before I lose all control. This Old Book is a treasure. I plan to return when I have more time, and a smaller balance on my credit cards, and allow myself to peruse every aisle, flip upon a few covers, and let myself strike gold. Because the printed word is a gold mine, the kind that has the most value, and I am a devoted prospector. This is a good place. You should shop here, and let yourself wander among the stacks. Find yourself some gold.

I don't live very close to Barbara's Bookstore, so I do a lot of my browsing online. When, in the past, I would have ordered a book on Amazon, I now mostly order from Barbara's. If the book isn't on their shelves, they order it for me and let me know when it's ready. They can also just ship it directly to me, but since my wife works nearby, she can usually pick it up and I don't pay shipping. It's worth the wait for me to support a local business. The customer service is top notch. Once I place an order, Cory replies very quickly and keeps me updated. Employees in store are nice too. Finally, anyone can join their free club, "Barb Wire", and get 10% off. As a teacher, I get 15% off. This is great because Barnes and Noble discontinued their teacher discount and usually charge for their membership. Finally, when I do have a book shipped by Barbara's, they are packaged well so there's no damage to the book. Even if I liked Amazon, they stopped packaging books well years ago. Now they throw it in a loose box or bag and it often arrives damaged. I've returned many damaged books to Amazon due to careless packaging.

There is a small children's section with creative, interesting books for newborns to teens and the adults section has themed sections with suggested topics. I love a good bookstore, and this one is a lovely addition to downtown Libertyville. That being…read moresaid, there was a very sad realization on my visit as to why most have closed their doors in the last decade. First, I'll start with the coziness of About Time. There are places to sit and read, and the feeling of being surrounded by books is comforting. There is a large selection of books, but they are not super well organized. I found Kristin Hannah books in a few different locations. The books are generally categorized by type, and alphabetized from there. The staff is very helpful if there is something specific you're looking for. I wanted to buy a book to support this local gem, but the reality of paying double what I would have on Amazon was a tough pill to swallow. I purchased The Red Tent for list price, and it was half as much online. As an avid book reader, I love a good book store. I hope this one survives.

Buyer beware. Do not purchase auctions or collections from this seller…read more Seller fraudulently indicated that a collection a new employee of my shop purchased would contain items that were not included in the collection. They also fraudulently represented that the collection contained "Lots of good stuff, very little junk!!" but in reality, the collection was mostly junk/bulk. When I attempted to return the collection, the seller responded by attempting to intimidate me out of returning the collection, leaving negative and false reviews, and even called my shop in an attempt to intimidate me and/or my employees out of returning this garbage collection.
