Cute little cafe inside a large bookstore. Selling wonderful Starbucks drinks, plenty of people coming in just for the coffee. A bit disappointed that the counter staff were not able to make the advertised drinks, in fact they had no idea what the promotions were. End result: Espresso drinks came out terrible!!!!! Bookwise, this Barnes & Noble is par for the course. Atmospherically (is that a word?) it can be rated "meh" at best. Being that the Brass Mill Mall/Commons area has been nicknamed "Brass Knuckles", you ought to be able to gather that the neighborhood sucks. I've seen people panhandling & rummaging through the garbage cans outside. Today I had an abysmal experience with the people there though. Everytime I go, the café area is packed, today was no different. People were plodding away on their laptops/doing homework/whatever as normal but people were being loud and obnoxious. Totally unconducive to concentration. Then there was a group of typical Waterbury trash gossiping at the top of their lungs. Seriously, STFU. Next time I go to take advantage of free in-store reading on my nook, I'll go to Canton where it isn't the ghetto fab meeting spot. read more

This is a pretty decent chain location. Lots of this, lots of that. I was impressed with the amount of periodicals they carry here. I generally find a few computer music / tech mags at other locations; here I sat down with a stack nearly to my chin. No Jazz Improv, which was disappointing, though. So: it's a good store. I DID have an awful bathroom experience, however. Which definitely affected my rating. I had to change my son's diaper, and as usual with most places, the men's room is woefully inadequate for diaper duty. The changing table had a pool of stale urine, dried feces and a newspaper leftover from whatever charming individual used it last (the changing table is within the handicap stall). Add to this, a generally filthy lavatory, and one can imagine this brought a prompt discussion with the manager. But hey, guys: we don't ask for much, right? A place to do our business is all we need, even if it is the floor. So it would seem. The manager was very accommodating, and braved the men's room herself to inspect the shrapnel. Later she told me that it was atrocious, and that they ordered a new changing table and a prompt clean up. To their credit, my wife tells me the woman's restroom is pristine. With a mini-bar, pillow mints and everything. Not really. But you get the idea.. read more

Probably the last place you can buy a book in Waterbury. Considering where it is located, it is very clean and the staff is friendly and informative. Finding books is often tough, even in this location, but many times I just asked the staff and they were more than willing to look up the information for me to see if they had it in stock. Having a Starbucks located inside just sweetens the deal, especially with the free Wifi. Parking lot is a hide your belongings kind of place, but there are plenty of spaces. Not much more can be said. This place really is the place to be for books. read more

A bit of a mess in the parking lot BUT I'm grateful that it's a brick and mortar book store in Waterbury. So, I can handle a little game of white knuckles edge of my seat bumper cars to find a spot. Ok, a slight exaggeration...slight. The store itself is actually bright, organized and clean. I didn't need help this time because the areas inside were well defined and marked. However, there was an area to seek help. I find the prices of most books to high these days. Why I'm usually in the library back home. I'm not home though so I sought out the bargain area at this store. The bargain section was stocked well with books in many genres. I was able to grab a few books and leave a few for the future. I noticed a table up by the register that also had bargain prices. These prices ranges from 5.98 on up. The girl at the register was friendly and polite. There is a coffee shop that sells Starbucks products. It has a seating area. I looked over but there was a line and the tables were full. I'd return but I'm also going to check out John Bale Book company a used book store. read more

The staff here are very helpful and friendly; the baristas in the cafe do a fantastic job and are a joy to talk to. There are no plugs to charge your electronic devices, so don't come here on a low battery expecting to charge up the laptop. Free, reliable wifi. A great view of the sunset here, with the Holyland cross and the Easter Island statue as curious and colorful additions to the view. I love coming here, getting a drink and maybe a snack, a stuffed pizza pretzel, or a bowl of Italian Wedding soup (when they have it), and doing my homework here. Try the Fall in a Cup ("secret menu"), hot, for a pumpkin/chai/caramel ease into Autumn 2013. I don't use them, but it seems there are a lot of stunned customers that come in with a Starbucks gift card: They are NOT accepted here! They only accept B&N gift cards here; they're not a Starbucks, though they serve Starbucks products. And, remember, kids... Reading Is Fundamental! read more

Today, at the store, there was a man disrupting two visitors. He was rude and obnoxious. He actually accosted the two men sitting at a table and was so abusive to them and made them feel so uncomfortable that they left the store. The management was excellent though. Once alerted by another customer that there was a situation, they appropriately summoned the mall police who came almost immediately and succeeded in escorting the unruly individual out. My one reason for not giving 5 stars was that my java chip frappuccino made me feel sick on the way home. Not sure why. Acute onset of nausea etc. Was there something spoiled in the mix? Buyer beware. It will be a long long time before I order another of those. read more

Located in a shopping center just next to the Brass Mill Mall, this bookstore is spacious and clean. They also have a Starbucks cafe where you can get your caffeine and sweet tooth fix and read your books in there. They have a lot of great topics and types of books and magazines as well as other items, too. The staff on the floor and at the register have always been helpful when I had a question or request. This is the closest B&N to me, and it's also one of the only bookstores in the area now, which saddens me. Unfortunately, the location isn't the greatest, and many times you will see police/guards at the door to prevent theft. I've also had security/police follow me around the store, which was unnerving; everywhere I went in the store, the guy was 10 steps behind me. I understand the purpose, (loss prevention) but it was obvious and made me just want to leave, when normally I can spend HOURS in there. There is a Starbucks in this location, but they don't accept your Starbucks card or points. read more

I haven't been to this BnN often but I'm a book fan and love all bookstores. The Starbucks Cafe is awesome. It's easy to get very comfy and just hang out for a while as you get caught up on some of your favorite mags or books. A great selling point for this BnN is that it's right next door to the Brass Mill Mall. read more

Let me tell you, I am in love with this place. I spend roughly ten hours a week in this place, sitting at the cafe with a stack of books. The cafe area itself is well kept. Every so often, one lone person will pull three tables together for himself, and the staff will thankfully separate them and forbid him to do it again as other people need somewhere to sit. They will also ask loud customers to quiet down, which I am incredibly thankful for. Yeah, you can get coffee there, but it's not a fast food joint. Lots of noise is not appreciated by anyone there. The cafe staff are a mixed bag. The old employees know what I want before I even open my mouth to order, and they make it quickly and correctly, all the while chatting with me about whatever books I'm reading or how their day is going. My experience with the old baristas was very pleasant. The new employees are kind of dead behind the eyes and never seem to get my order right. There was one horrifying incident where I had to explain to an employee what "Affogato" meant. It is on the wall... right behind you. She seemed shocked when I explained that it meant I wanted an extra shot of espresso. If ever there was a facepalm moment, it was right then. I tend not to order blended drinks from the newbies anymore.) However, that won't put a damper on my love for the cafe. I'll just grab a cranberry juice and save the barista a headache. The employees of the B&N store itself are just lovely. They are all very sweet people who will chat you up. If you become familiar with any of them, they'll sit near you at the cafe on their breaks and you can have a laugh with them. They're also extremely helpful if there's anything you have trouble finding - you know how people are, sometimes they take books off the shelves and don't put them back where they belong. The manager himself is a great guy and profusely thanks everyone who puts the books back in their proper locations, and begs good customers to come back, haha. All in all, the staff are a joy to be around. I'm surprised that the earlier reviewer had issues with the bathroom, but I'm female and haven't seen the state of the mens' room. I can, however, say that the women's room is remarkably clean. I mean sterile and white. I have never seen a cleaner public restroom! If someone scrawls graffiti on a stall, it is removed within an hour or two. Seeing as I spend so much time at that place, I definitely am thankful for the amount of attention they give to the restrooms. Who likes to use a grimy toilet? No one! Great place. My only complaints are minor - I wish the cafe seating area was bigger, and I wish my old baristas would come back. Regardless, this B&N is like my home away from home. read more

This Barnes and nobles is my go to for both coffee and books when I'm in the area. My place of work is not too far away so often I will stop by for the new releases sections. There are always so many interesting bargain books that I just pick up and buy. It's like a candy store!! A great place and plaza. Definitely very helpful staff as well! They always have the required books for my college courses and the staff always knows how to find them. Could widen their poetry area however, but then that's just me being enthusiastic about literature. Will continue to go there read more

This B&N happens to be one of the nicest set ups in the area. Been to Danbury's and was very disappointed, considering the area it was in. Waterbury's is friendly, places to relax and review books before purchasing and the ability to get a great snack or drink while meeting with friends. Need a break from the day; go here!! read more

Since Border's used to be my go to book spot and they are no longer around, I frequent this B&N quite often. I don't have any complaints about the book selection. I usually don't have a specific "book" in mind, I just usually go in and search through what they have. Everybody has been very friendly and they are always very helpful in helping you find something if you truly can't find it. The only thing I wish they had that Borders did was a computer where you can type in what you are looking for (or something similar) and it would give you the area of where it will be. It's kind of annoying have to wait in line to ask somebody to show you where something is when I can do it myself. Also, there is not a whole lot of seating in this store. You have the cafe which is reasonable for the size, but if you have to grab a book and go sit, they don't have a lot to choose from which sucks. I don't like to sit on the floor and if I'm not going homework there is no reason for me to hog up a table for one person. Other than that, I enjoy coming here. I can stay for hours! read more

I used to love this place and feel so comfortable but I've had a recent experience of being followed by not only staff but the store cop. I am a African American male and the store has a all Caucasian staff which Im fine with I love all people. But I guess they thought African Americans can't read or something I was so offended. So FYI for African Americans if you wanna be racially profiled while you shop for a good book this is the place to be. read more
